Why is Azuth associated with blue fire? Does it have any particular significance?

Aye, I think it's the color of the Weave, it's not only Azuth, Mystra and all her cronies have this blue fire thing.

Azuth was Mystra's lapdog, and Mystra and her weave manifested in blue-ish [spell]fire. That is until Shar went Britney on her and cut off her weave. shooooooot gurrrrl Tongue out

Quale1, you were able to translate the metaphor of the Weave into a form my poor brain could understand. :D

Blue fire is actually the raw stuff of magic, if you noticed everything to do with the spellplague is blue, the spellscars, the plaguechanged lands, etc.
Mystra wove that power in to the weave.

The Second Edition Box Set has Blue Fire on it IIRC.

Silver fire used to be the color of pure weave blasts of the Chosen. With Mystra gone this silver color has filtered to blue. Perhaps the silverfire turned darker because of the mixture of the weave with the shadowweave.

We also have Selune's moonfire, which I believe is silver/milky white. Now that I think about it, since Mystra is directly related to Selune, I wonder if blue fire and silver fire may be, in some way, related to moonfire. Yes, I know, Mystra's fires are the truest manifestations of the weave, but still. Unless this isn't a new idea.

Reminds me of Eilistraee's silvery fire showing up in Vhaeraun's darkfire in Sacrifice of the Widow. At least I think those were both fires. It's been a while since I last read it.

They certainly are related, half of it comes from Selune, the reactive part.

The designers took a poll and found blue was more popular? Mystra had a medical condition? Cyric did it?

Blue is the color of raw magic. The Weave was Mystra, the interface that the magic-users required to access it, otherwise it would be too dangerous for them. Silver color of the Weave is a Selune's light and Shar's dark. When the Weave collapsed, all that raw magic blue energy was released as the Spellplague. There was no mixing of the weaves cause they vanished.

Possibly there was a counter-effect, the raw magic ''reservoir'' was relatively depleted, the magic-users were no longer in danger and there was no immediate need for the new Weave. But after some time passes the raw magic may become to difficult to handle ...

Very good! The idea that the magic of today will become increasingly more difficult to channel harmlessly will certainly pop up in any future campaigns I will run. Gonna wait for the release of the DarkSun campain setting to look how they will handle defiler and preserver magic. This system can than represent the increased powerfeedback of manipulating raw magic. If no new filter is erected in time raw magic manipulation will not only drain the magic user (depletion of dailies) but damage the surroundings aswell.

Maybe even drain healing surges...

#17

suin_bahhar_02

Indeed, that would be the preserver way of casting. *thinks*

Draining surges from others around the caster would form the defiler way:

0-10 level spells drain surges one square away

paragon spells 5 to 10 squares

and epic level spells 10+ squares around the caster.

Drats, cant wait for the new Darksun setting to see how Rich Baker & co balances this.

I really like your idea, Quale; very cool!

It does beg a question: when did the concept of the Weave appear anyway in D&D? I've just taken a peek (very quick) through the OGB and couldn't find it there. It did mention that Mystra 'is said to have given the first teachings that unlocked the forces termed "magic"'.

I'm wondering, particularly with the emergence of the knowledge of Abeir, primordials and the titans, if the Weave could be seen as the gods' attempt to control magic in their own world in case of any future invasion by those powers from Abeir. Sort of like Mystra was Microsoft. ;)

Ultimately I think because the concept of blue fire is pure ... awesome. That is it say it's entirely visual and in a way that is not the norm. Fire is associated with red, yellow and orange. Blue is the opposite of the spectrum, but not entirely alien to us (just look at your stove). Imagine that, but all over.

Glad you liked it. I believe that will be how Defiling works. Something that will drain healing surges. Its the most obvious way to affect PC's.

Like Liz from the first Helboy movie. She manifested her pyrokinesis in blue near the end. Personally, I think green flames and dark (black) fire are awesome-r. More sinister and intense, especially the black.

Dark_Wizard_02

Yeah, like that.

Though I think Xvim and maybe Bane had the green flame motif. Black fire is a very Shar image, which for obvious reasons Mystra related magic would go out of it's way to avoid.

Bane's was basically green energy, or green light, not specifically fire. It could be interpreted as green flame, but I don't believe that's the principle motif of theirs.

Permanent darkgreen flames are also used as illumination in monasteries that train Cyricist assassins. The higher ranked members use these edifices to glean the will of the darksun, looking for the faces of their next targets. They have also devised Flamewalk spells to penetrate bastions via the fire hearth.

I'm not sure but I think the Weave was introduced quite late, in Netheril: Empire of Magic or Faiths and Avatars.

The Weave emerged from a deific conflict, but it was certainly used against primordials later.

Who was the deific conflict originally between? Was this before the Abeir-Toril even came along or somewhere in its prehistory?

Shar and Selune, before Abeir-Toril was created. Chauntea (and thus Toril) was one of the effects of their fight.

As already mentioned, Selune (and Chauntea) vs Shar. One of the things (perhaps the only thing) I dislike with the introduction of Primordials is that they were apparently around long before Selune and Shar arose. The S&S conflict came before the Abeir-Toril split, but was the first move that drew the attention of the Primordials.

These should be coming out every month in Dragon Magazine. A one page article with a Site, Lore about it for DM's to use.
