It's Maxiladanarr Torstren, who was Magister from 1322 to 1328 DR. He was a reclusive mage who took the job after dropping summoned monsters mid-gloat on the Red Wizard who'd killed the last Magister and expected he would get the job next. Then Max faked his own death to avoid being attacked by other would-be Magisters in turn. Thereafter he worked behind the scenes on eugenics programs, getting one person to marry another, and so form clans of talented mages. He pretty much invented Sorcerers for 3rd edition (my theory). He died, not in spell-battle, but by a natural avalanche as he napped on a mountain ledge.
His name doesn't ring a bell, but Magister definitely does.

Given how many Magisters died in battle to the next Magister, Max's end is kind of ironic. Actually, it's almost fitting for a Magister who's first act was to blow up his own tower to fake his death and prevent just such an end.

FR4 The Magister (1988) is a collection of new and Dragon-published spellbooks and magic items. It's a testament to the ground-breaking Dragon articles in which Ed normalized the defining of D&D magic by its lore rather than its powers.
Secrets of the Magister (2000) describes the office, the history of Magisters to date, other unusual servants of Mystra, and other magical lore including important information on mantles and combination spells.
Both are full of the historical anecdotes that give us some of the most vivid pictures of the dynamics of struggles in Faerûn.

Don't think it was on a Dragon cover. Probably a Spellfire card and a TSR Collector Card.

$50 a piece?!? The crazy thing is, I got a bunch of those. I've got:

- Manshoon
- Khelben Arunsun
- Suul the Lich
And more that aren't listed there (King Azoun Obarskyr IV, Vangerdahast, Szass Tam, and a woman who I know is a Realms character, but I can't remember her name). And they're all going for $50+? I wonder if they'll sell? Because if they do, I'm gonna go ahead and start hocking all of my minis for $40 a pop. ;)
I had the original Star Wars minis from the early 80's as well. Someone on my last regular site (Coolminiornot) was looking for them, so I mailed him the whole set free of charge (I even paid the shipping). He was in Sweden, IIRC.
He probably turned around and got a zillion dollars for them on E-Bay, but whatever - they weren't doing me any good locked away in my attic.
Considering I own over 10,000 miniatures, and probably less then 100 are painted, I doubt I'll ever get around to doing them all.
Especially since my hands and eyes ain't what they use to be.
Anyhow, I KNOW I have that pic on a book (I don't 'do' cards or whatever), so now I'm thinking its in a box somewhere, and I just never realized there was both a 1e and 2e source for the Magister. I have stuff still shrink-wrapped (mostly Planescape and Darksun), so it wouldn't surprise me if I never even cracked the cover.
Thats back when I owned my own construction company, and wasn't on a fixed income.
