umm It looked like roman legion armor to me.

as for what race he is, he is a god.

as for what he was, is anybody's guess. human, half-orc, half fiend etc...
I dont think he would of been an orc, as they tend to deal with STR more than Fear.

He was mortal orginally. He won his divinity from Jergal

Bane was human, as was Mykrul and Bhaal, all 3 won divinity from Jergal, well it wasnt so much as won as pretty much given to them. Jergal split up his portfolios amongst them, I guess he was tired of being a god, but for what ever reason he stayed on and helped out Mykrul with the running of the realm of the dead, and then much later stayed on to help Cyric run things, and now hes with Kelemvor.

Actually, after rereading that bit in Faiths & Avatars, it doesn't specifically say that they were human, just that they were mortal. I was thinking it said that they were humans, but still they had predominately human worshipers and took on human avatars during the time of troubles so i would assume that they were human.

Hmmmm, you guys might be on to something there. Im under the impression that Bane,Bhaal, and Mykrul all adventured together back in the day, and adventuring parties are seldom comprised of all humans, so perhaps Bane was the Gnome, Bhaal was quick so maybe he was a halfling, Mykrul was the Necromancer of the group, so maybe he was the token human, not that other races couldnt be a Necromancer, but most Necromancers ive met have been human.

Note that this is not the FR Bane. It's a different deity that just happens to have the same name.

About FR Bane's origin: According to what Storm saw in Bane's memories in the guy possessed by a remnant of Bane's divine essence, he hailed from a far away place that's vastly different from Faerun.

He looks like an orc, because he has green skin (From Faiths and Pantheons), and from the pictures in which he has wolf like ears and sharp teeth...but I'm assuming he's human from the fact that he took on a human body in ToT.

I agree. Well it's not just that he takes the human form in ToT, it's hard for me to think that the god of Tyrany, .... pardon me: THE god of TYRANY was a gnome. Sorry again.............. A GNOME !???!?!?!??! I mean ok these creatures are also part of the world etc etc but it's totaly un-epic to think of such an important god to be a gnome. If he was not Human why is he only worshiped by humans?????

Bane is Human.

Though the thing I find funny about this adventureing band of would be gods is this
Bane is the fighter....Bhaal is the rogue...Myrkul is the wizard....there is no cleric mentioned at all.

So three possiblities
1)There was a person in this group who didn't become a god....

2) Shar disguised as a human went along with them.

3) Over the course of there adventuring careers Bane and Bhaal got killed and turned into undead by Myrkul.

Of course I answeared this question when a group of PCs wiped out Zhentarim leadership....they was not happy at all to meet the Bride of Bane...but that is another story.

In most of the FR novels I have read, the party lacks a cleric (and if there are any, they are so woe-fully inadequate that the party needs potions anyway).

No i dont believe there was, he was dead during that time period so they didnt do much with him. But any way that wouldnt really help us any as gods could appear pretty much however they wanted. There is a picture of Bane's son, Iyachtu Xvim in the Faiths and Avatars book, and he looks very human. Bane took a human avatar during the time of troubles, most of his worshippers were human and Bane's chosen, the Baneliches, were all humans (at least im pretty sure). So all in all id say Bane was human. If we want a definite answer, some one will have to ask Ed Greenwood.

Well I dont know if he was mutated or not, that could be possible. I just always thought Bane chose to look like that (with the horns and everything) to instill fear in those who gazed upon him. But yeah I would say that once he became divine he was no longer human.

And yeah I see Jergal as being an insectoid. Ive heard that he is a Spellweaver (from Dragon Magazine 338) but they dont look very bug like, like Jergal is ussually shown as being. Was there a bug like Creator race? If not Id say there should be.

Oh man, we've totally derailed this thread to the topic of what race is Jergal now. Still interesting stuff. And yeah he is obviously an ancient god, but I wonder how old exactly he is? Could he be older than Shar and Selune? Maybe he came from a world that existed before Realmspace was even created, the last survivor of the world, sort of like the Realms equivelent of Galactus.

And as for why humans would worship him, look at the portfolios he had, Death, Murder, and Strife, many humans would be drawn to that as a path of power. I couldnt see many of his worshipers as being very nice people.

Interesting stuff goldomark, youve really done your homework! I dont think Myrkul had anything to do with Moanders downfall. It was those dang elves from Myth Drannor, they banished him from the Realms and imprisoned his avatar beneath his temple complex in Yulash, I think Darkwatch comes into play somewhere in there too. But any way since Moander wasnt using those portfolios anymore im guessing Mykrul scooped them up, although I could see a fight with Talona happening over that. It doesnt specificaly say but I suppose it is possible that Mykrul helped the Elves banish Moander, perhaps giving them the necessary ritual or something just to get Moander out of the way so he could claim those portfolios. Any way by 4e standards I dont even think Moander is a god, I think hes more of a primordial.

Most (if not all) gods in the time of troubles did not take avatar forms and instead possessed people.
Bane for awhile possessed Fzoul Chembryl.  That he chose a human to possess does not necessarily prove he was a human

Thats really one of those unanswerable questions, theres plenty of instances were the artwork does not match up with whats supposed to be going on. Kinda like when buying a comic book, and whatever scene is depicted on the cover almost never actually happens.

They way I see it, in this case, I think the pic has it right, but Bane didnt want people to think that he just popped out nude, so he created a vision of a black armoured knight for his worshippers.

There's no reason a god has to look like he did as a mortal. Bane can look however he wants.

It's also possible his most common appearance changes according to how his worshipers think he should look. As artists over the centuries depicted him looking fiercer and more nonhuman, Bane himself began to change whether he wanted to or not.

The intent in the illustrations is to make him look demonic. He doesn't look like an orc.

In any case, it's impossible to judge what he was as a mortal by his current appearance.

And the spell weaver was first introduced in Dragon #163. They were created by Ed O'Connell.

I think you are right....and I think that is why he gaved up his powers to Bane and company...one morning he woked up and looked at his whorshippers and went.."Urggh"

I always figured he was some really ancient (now extict) race. Like maybe he was the first person on Toril to ever die and thus became the god of death.

Back to the orginal topic: where does it say Bane had a human avatar in the ToT?

That last Roman looking picture is NOT Bane!
Someone tried to say that but no one payed attention.
So again, of the 3 pictures, only the FIRST TWO are Bane.
The last one is a different god from a different world who is the god of war and for some stupid reason WotC named him Bane as well.

Most (if not all) gods in the time of troubles did not take avatar forms and instead possessed people.
Bane for awhile possessed Fzoul Chembryl.  That he chose a human to possess does not necessarily prove he was a human

I know this is kind of an old thread but I noticed something: in the FRCS on the page where it talks about the return of Bane it said he appeared as a knight with black armor. So why does the picture not reflect that?

Thats really one of those unanswerable questions, theres plenty of instances were the artwork does not match up with whats supposed to be going on. Kinda like when buying a comic book, and whatever scene is depicted on the cover almost never actually happens.

They way I see it, in this case, I think the pic has it right, but Bane didnt want people to think that he just popped out nude, so he created a vision of a black armoured knight for his worshippers.

Could it be the FRCS picture was supposed to be of Iyachtu Xvim before Bane bursts out and the illustrator for F&P mistakenly thought it was Bane?

I know, he is a Yoda Race, unstatable.;)

I believe this is the correct answer. Bane is an evil Yoda.

"Fear me, you will. Dying now, you shall be!"

Well, on the topic of artwork and text description not matching.
A friend of mine wants to know what the holy symbol of Bane looks like.
The text describes it as "green rays shooting out of a black hand" (approximated from Polish), green being the key word here. In the drawing in F&P and FRCS, the hand is black, the background is green, but the rays themselves are beige!

As a God bane is capable of appearing however he wants to. This was shown in the avatar series when the gods were cast out by AO. As A mortal bane was a human as were mykul and bhaal.

From Faiths and Pantheons:

"History/Relationship: Even as a human, Bane wanted nothing more than to become the most feared, respected tyrant the world had ever known.[...]
Hence, the calculating despot joined forces with the similarly driven humans Bhaal and Myrkul in a pact of mutual assistance that would end in the apotheosis of the entire trio."

So Bane, Bhaal and Myrkul were humans, as mortals. As gods, they can appear as they wish.  Wink

Thank you for that, I was thinking that there was something somewhere that stated specifically that they were humans but couldnt find it!
