| #1rogue_shadowsMar 22, 2008 9:07:49 | I ask because when I first cracked open the 3.5 setting rulebook, and looked at the place, the Dales, as always, seemed to carry a storyload and a half worth of material. But what interested me most is the Auzkovyn drow. For some reason they just seemed like the most likely branch of that race to actually found a stable surface kingdom that wouldn't exist in a state of constant war with its neighbors, if they but had some kind or leader or something that could actually lead them to that. House Jaelre? Not so much. Sure, they're more organized, but they're basically just your typical drow, only on the surface and worshipping Vhaerun instead. Who, SPOILERS AHEAD, Show is dead now anyway. |
| #2lord_karsusMar 22, 2008 14:40:39 | -As per the current date (1375 DR): -The Elven Crusade, led by a powerful Cleric of Corellon Larethian, came to Evereska's aid, when Sarya Dlardraegeth attacked the Fortress Home. She and her army of Fey'ri, Demons and Devils, provided by her patron, Malkizid, were defeated, and returned to Myth Glauroch. The Elven Crusade persued them, and ousted Sarya from the ruins of the City of Scrolls. She and her army then relocated to Myth Drannor, making a deal with the Drow in the area, and subjugating any creatures that she encountered that did not bow down to her. The Elven Crusade, along with Sembian and Dalesland allies, marched on Myth Drannor, eventually destroying Sarya and her army, and fixing the corruptions to the Mythal in the process. Currently, the Elven Crusade troops are inhabiting the city, fighting a war against the Drow and the Zhents who do not want an Elven presence in the area, while slowly rebuilding the city to a pale reflection of it's former glory. |

| #518DELTAMar 22, 2008 15:18:33 | -Most every thing that was posted is now in offical lorebooks, not novels. So would they need spoiler/sblock tags? 18DELTA ![]() |
| #6jiggawha_dupMar 22, 2008 15:39:59 | there's some info in Dragon 359, history of reclamation, about new mythal, population 7,450, population of monsters is melting away tough, daily life is a mix of military exercises, salvaging, debris clearing, rebuilding, aiding in distributing wears of merchant caravans ... |
| #7lord_karsusMar 22, 2008 15:58:02 | So would they need spoiler/sblock tags? -The courtesy thing is that you give it about three-six months or so before you stop with the spoiler tags. |
| #8markustay63Mar 22, 2008 17:52:19 | Basically, they took all of those wonderful plot-hooks they gaves us for Cormanthor and the Dales and used them up themselves. Its kind of like the guy at 7-11 selling you a Big Gulp, and then he drinks it himself. Not very satisfying at all...... |
| #9rinonalyrna_fathomlinMar 22, 2008 19:50:39 | Basically, they took all of those wonderful plot-hooks they gaves us for Cormanthor and the Dales and used them up themselves. LOL! My thoughts exactly... |
| #10lord_karsusMar 22, 2008 22:35:23 | Basically, they took all of those wonderful plot-hooks they gaves us for Cormanthor and the Dales and used them up themselves. -As a player, I'm sure that's frustrating. When you look at the world as a whole, though, it seems natural enough. Especially with the recent end of the Elven Retreat. |
| #11markustay63Mar 23, 2008 1:01:42 | Yeah, but when you look through that section he's talking about, it is just chock full of great ideas for adventures... And now, they've tied them all up. ![]() I guess with the 4e bomb on the way, they needed to end those story-lines, but its just upsetting that all those good intrigues were never used to their potential. The word 'Anti-climactic' comes to mind. ![]() |
| #12lord_karsusMar 23, 2008 1:06:48 | ...they needed to end those story-lines... -I don't think so. I mean, how many untouched and unsolved plotlines and story-hooks, since 2e? Plenty, I assure you. |
| #13rogue_shadowsMar 24, 2008 8:27:01 | So from all this, I get that stuff is happening in Cormanthor, but nothing that really specifically changes anything as of my FRCS? That is, there's still Auzkovyn doing Auzkovyn-type things, still Jaelre doing Jaelre-type things, the elves coming back from the Retreat are still doing elves-coming-back-from-the-Retreat type things, but nothing has really changed except now, apparently, Myth Drannor is back? ...okay, whatever. |
| #14rinonalyrna_fathomlinMar 24, 2008 9:37:17 | So from all this, I get that stuff is happening in Cormanthor, but nothing that really specifically changes anything as of my FRCS? It's a major change, in the sense that the "ruins" of Myth Drannor will, over time, cease to be ruins. And yes, I did prefer them as ruins, myself. |
| #15rogue_shadowsMar 24, 2008 10:03:47 | Myth Drannor never really factored into Cormanthor much for me, though, so it's not too much of a change for me. Frankly I was always curious why, after two dozen delves from two dozen differen adventuring parties, often concurrently, the ruins weren't completely out-monster'd and rendered as just plain old ruins of the more mundane variety. I have the same problem with Durlag's Tower and a few other places that basically have a neon "BORED DM PLOT HOOK" sign sitting outside of them. I'm kind of sad that the Auzkovyn seem to of existed as nothing more than a background menace, though. A story exclusively focused on the founding of a surface drow nation by them would have been cool. Say... Something like this A bunch of elves returning from the Retreat are disgusted to find how humans and drow have affected their wood. So they concot an evil scheme to raise the demon Ugartha Forka. Ugartha Forka is mentioned in The Crystal Shard as a demon that spreads plague, but which drow are immune to for some reason. Salvatore never expanded upon the idea. The elves discover that the plague will effect only whatever was sacrificed during Forka's summoning ritual. Thus they kidnap a half-drow from either Cormyr or Sembia, which will cause both humans and drow to be effected. Said half-drow is not an adventurer in any way; she's little more than a child and just lived with her father in some isolated place somewhere. However, as the half-drow is being transported to Cormanthor, The Transporter-style. Then a number of Auzkovyn drow including OUR PROTAGONIST, an Auzkovyn drow, intercept the carriage in order to raid it, and discover our half-drow friend, who is our SECONDARY PROTAGONIST. Hilarity ensues. Or not so much hilarity, but whatever. You get the point. |
| #16rinonalyrna_fathomlinMar 24, 2008 10:44:25 | Myth Drannor never really factored into Cormanthor much for me, though, so it's not too much of a change for me. Frankly I was always curious why, after two dozen delves from two dozen differen adventuring parties, often concurrently, the ruins weren't completely out-monster'd and rendered as just plain old ruins of the more mundane variety. The idea is that these places are so vast and have such powerful creatures in them that they can never be fully tamed. Or, in the case of places like Durlag's Tower, every time they are cleaned out, something else moves right in. I understand what you are saying about these places perhaps being "bored DM plot hooks." However, you did ask what's going on in Cormanthor. Whether or not Myth Drannor matters much to you, it has undergone a major change. ![]() |
| #17rogue_shadowsMar 24, 2008 11:27:39 | True. Good to have the information, I suppose. |
| #18markustay63Mar 24, 2008 12:02:25 | Actually, lots and LOTS of major stuff happens to those two groups of Drow (as per the GHotR), including allying with Sembia and the Shades, then the Zhents, and eventually just dwindling on down to insignificance. The Zhents sign a formal treaty with Cormanthor (!), allowing them use of the Moonsea Ride. That leaves the fate of various Dales and the two Drow clans up in the air, because all of those were allied with the two (three?) different sides in that war. I think in 4e, those group will just 'fade away', going by their last few references in the GHotR. ![]() |
| #19lord_karsusMar 24, 2008 12:17:53 | So from all this, I get that stuff is happening in Cormanthor, but nothing that really specifically changes anything as of my FRCS? -The army occupying Myth Drannor is engaged in a war with Zhentil Keep, and their Drow allies. |
