| #1warrior-poetApr 29, 2008 14:18:13 | Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere---but does anyone know how this will affect FR fiction? Certain characters are bound/able to survive (Drizzt/Elminster)---but what of others? Artemis? The rest of the 'Heroes of the Hall'? How about the characters in Elaine Cunningham's books? (just about to start those). Is all of FR Fiction just going to jump 100 years in June? Will they abandon all the current storylines? |
| #2JudgeDookieApr 29, 2008 14:31:49 | Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere---but does anyone know how this will affect FR fiction? Certain characters are bound/able to survive (Drizzt/Elminster)---but what of others? Artemis? The rest of the 'Heroes of the Hall'? Most characters are going to get the boot. Artemis and the Heroes of the Hall are all presumed dead. Read the intro in The Orc King where Drizzt's prologue is set a hundred years in the future. Current trilogies based in 3e will continue to come out until they are finished--late 2008 for at least one of them and into early 2009 for another. Anything new will be based in 4th ed. |
| #3warrior-poetApr 29, 2008 14:40:54 | Yeah, I read the intro. Just wasn't sure exactly how wotc was going to handle the whole body of work. Well... that pretty much bites... I have a lot of thought/fun/time invested in those story lines. Barring some silly "Mass Time Transport/Coma for 100 years", I will be very upset to loose all of those folks. I will likely stop reading FR fiction. |
| #4lord_karsusApr 29, 2008 15:04:49 | -Being as that the 4e incarnation of the Forgotten Realms will be taking place about 100 years from now, those who don't have access to naturally long lifespans, age retarding magics, or age retarding magical effects are going to be dead. |

| #6xmen510Apr 29, 2008 15:37:18 | They have also mentioned that as of this moment (not saying they won't change their minds latter) they plan on specifically NOT releasing ANY books in that 100 year time gap as well. Also probably no more for before that time either unless it is Ed Greenwood writing it. |
| #7JudgeDookieApr 29, 2008 16:17:54 | They have also mentioned that as of this moment (not saying they won't change their minds latter) they plan on specifically NOT releasing ANY books in that 100 year time gap as well. Also probably no more for before that time either unless it is Ed Greenwood writing it. Yeah, its been known that they won't be setting any novels within the gap. That is, except for the ten year jump with the Year of the Blue Fire. As for Greenwood, he's already stated he wants to work on character stories based on current NPC's, so I imagine he'll do a lot of back story novels. His current trilogy is already doing that. |
| #8merrikcaleApr 29, 2008 20:27:55 | Presumably the novels will suffer along with the rest. Elaine's next book has already been yanked. Of course, novels unlike supplements and gaming material are more easily adaptable to the older, better years |
| #9JudgeDookieApr 29, 2008 20:39:17 | Presumably the novels will suffer along with the rest. Elaine's next book has already been yanked. Of course, novels unlike supplements and gaming material are more easily adaptable to the older, better years E.C.'s book yanked? Interesting. Have a link? |
| #10xmen510Apr 29, 2008 21:00:03 | No link, but apparently she was having a great deal of trouble trying to write it and couldn't get it done on time and the date kept getting pushed back for her. In the end it was cancelled by both parties I understand. So we won't find out what happens with Arilyn and Danilo and the rest. Too bad. |

I have to admit that I am not a big fan of E.C.--so I'm not too concerned--but I hate untold stories. And, since Danilo is involved (I read Blackstaff), I would like to see this pursued. Can anyone at least tell me where this was mentioned, so I can try and dig for myself? |

I thought she was one of the better FR writers myself so I am disappointed and just wonder if it has anything to do with the Time Jump |
| #13JudgeDookieApr 29, 2008 22:02:04 | I thought she was one of the better FR writers myself so I am disappointed and just wonder if it has anything to do with the Time Jump No, man. It had to do with the Daughter of the Drow Trilogy, when she first came out. I do believe that was the name...? I'm simply a guy that likes detail. While she can write a good story, she doesn't have the detail for me. |
| #14lord_karsusApr 29, 2008 22:19:03 | Master of the Obvious, at it again. -I answered the question that was asked. What should I have said? They have also mentioned that as of this moment (not saying they won't change their minds latter) they plan on specifically NOT releasing ANY books in that 100 year time gap as well. Also probably no more for before that time either unless it is Ed Greenwood writing it. -This doesn't mean, however, that future novels can't have 'flashbacks', or scenes that take place in the past, that covers the time in between. -And, as for Reclaimation, there is a buzzing thread in the FR General section. |
| #15merrikcaleApr 30, 2008 21:27:42 | No, man. It had to do with the Daughter of the Drow Trilogy, when she first came out. I do believe that was the name...? aah. Well, I'll blame Rich Baker and Bruce Cordell anyway. Other horrors that are their fault include: rising gas prices, Donald Trump's hair cut, the popularity of Dancing with the Stars, the Yankees slow start, and the Miley Cyrus Vanity Fair fiasco. The bastards |
| #16JudgeDookieApr 30, 2008 21:36:01 | aah. Well, I'll blame Rich Baker and Bruce Cordell anyway. Rising gas prices: My inability to fart Donald Trump's hair: His inability to go on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy Dancing With the Stars: Who doesn't want to see hot celebs wear scandalous clothing and work those bodies? Yankees? Shhsh...New York. Need I say more? (shut up Karsus!) Miley? What was that about a slow start? ![]() No. Baker and Cordell are innocent for the moment. |
| #17lord_karsusApr 30, 2008 22:49:02 | Yankees? Shhsh...New York. Need I say more? (shut up Karsus!) -I'm not a Yankee fan. What do I care? |
| #18JudgeDookieApr 30, 2008 23:17:21 | -I'm not a Yankee fan. What do I care? Well, then thank God he didn't mention the Mets. ;) I just can't win against that stupid goat rebuttal. |
| #19lord_karsusApr 30, 2008 23:45:46 | -Yup. We have a respectable curse, at least: The Curse of Nolan Ryan. |
| #20JudgeDookieMay 01, 2008 0:14:50 | -Yup. We have a respectable curse, at least: The Curse of Nolan Ryan. PLEASE, Bejebuz!! Let this man see the folly with choosing baseball over football! ![]() Let him see that the righteous path is pads smacking players, rather than stick hitting balls! Let him see that the curse is on people too lazy to spell Metropolitans, rather than on a goat. ![]() Dear Bejebuz!! I ask you to bring your holy bad self down and get funky wit tis baseball freak!! | #21audearahshadeMay 09, 2008 20:37:36 | So essentially they have destroyed the entire mass of work and imagination that all the authors have put into the game world before the mass trashing and change of 'core rules'. They have just killed off all storylines and expect the fanbase to stick around for what comes next? |
| #22xmen510May 09, 2008 20:45:09 | Yep. That is correct Sir. A Cookie for you. |
| #23JudgeDookieMay 09, 2008 20:49:55 | So essentially they have destroyed the entire mass of work and imagination that all the authors have put into the game world before the mass trashing and change of 'core rules'. Not really--some things stick. What is yet to go, we still don't know. They have just killed off all storylines and expect the fanbase to stick around for what comes next? Some characters are still around. For those, I think the storyline will pick up decent enough...in a very apocalyptic way. |
| #24JudgeDookieMay 09, 2008 20:51:40 | Yep. That is correct Sir. A Cookie for you. I get the damn cookies!! ME!! Trader! ![]() |
| #25audearahshadeMay 09, 2008 21:00:18 | What links are there to read about direct changes? |
| #26JudgeDookieMay 09, 2008 21:12:52 | What links are there to read about direct changes? There used to be a sticky here with this, but technical issues have evidently dropped it. Go to YouTube and do a search for: 1- Chris Perkins 4th Edition 2 - Ed Greenwood 4th Edition 3 - Rich Baker 4th Edition You'll catch up quick enough. |
| #27lord_karsusMay 09, 2008 21:24:25 | PLEASE, Bejebuz!! Let this man see the folly with choosing baseball over football! -You, sir, are incorrect. |
| #28JudgeDookieMay 09, 2008 21:35:30 | -You, sir, are incorrect. You get defensive the other day about resurrecting dead threads and then you bring this up? Humph. ![]() No, I am not wrong. Football takes a hell of a lot more strategy and discipline than baseball can ever take. Goat or no goat |
| #29lord_karsusMay 09, 2008 23:31:56 | You get defensive the other day about resurrecting dead threads and then you bring this up? A) That was posted, what, a few days ago. B) I never responded to you. No, I am not wrong. Football takes a hell of a lot more strategy and discipline than baseball can ever take. Goat or no goat -Now you are just making yourself look and sound silly. You really should stop while you're ahead. ;) |
| #30xmen510May 10, 2008 7:21:23 | Now you are just making yourself look and sound silly. You really should stop while you're A HEAD. ;) Fixed that typo up for you there Lord Karsus.:D So JudgeDookie is a talking head eh? That explains a lot!:P :D |
| #31JudgeDookieMay 10, 2008 7:22:05 | A) That was posted, what, a few days ago. 1) It was over a week ago 2) My apologies. I forgot you always had to get the last word in. ;) -Now you are just making yourself look and sound silly. You really should stop while you're ahead. ;) I've looked and sounded silly for quite a while now. Where it comes to football vs. baseball, I'm all serious. |
| #32JudgeDookieMay 10, 2008 7:25:42 | Fixed that typo up for you there Lord Karsus.:D What you talkin' 'bout, Willis? ![]() |
| #33xmen510May 10, 2008 7:27:26 | All in good fun JudgeDookie. Please don't bite my HEAD off!:P :D Kidding of course. |
| #34JudgeDookieMay 10, 2008 7:47:02 | No worries. We've got enough talking heads around here. I don't see how I could possibly be one. ;) |
| #35lord_karsusMay 10, 2008 10:12:24 | 1) It was over a week ago -Over a week ago...A few days ago...Semantics. 2) My apologies. I forgot you always had to get the last word in. ;) -Right. And don't forget next time. I've looked and sounded silly for quite a while now. Where it comes to football vs. baseball, I'm all serious. -No, no, I realize that you are being serious. But, that's the problem. In supporting the notion that football is a superior sport over baseball, you cannot help but look silly. |
| #36JudgeDookieMay 10, 2008 10:27:48 | -Over a week ago...A few days ago...Semantics. Only where it applies to you. -Right. And don't forget next time. Yes, Captain Crunch. May I please lick your shoes now? -No, no, I realize that you are being serious. But, that's the problem. In supporting the notion that football is a superior sport over baseball, you cannot help but look silly. That is in your perspective. From mine, I would see anyone believing baseball was superior to football as an unintelligent person. You don't want to look like that, do you? |
| #37lord_karsusMay 10, 2008 10:37:10 | Yes, Captain Crunch. May I please lick your shoes now? -Only if you want to. That is in your perspective. From mine, I would see anyone believing baseball was superior to football as an unintelligent person. -The issue with an individual looking silly for lauding football over baseball doesn't make one look foolish subjectivley. Objectivley, those who laud football over baseball are the ones who look foolish. |

| #40JudgeDookieMay 10, 2008 14:39:42 | I think both are boring. Which may be why we find you so boring. So there ! ;) |
| #41xmen510May 10, 2008 15:04:52 | Which may be why we find you so boring. May I ask HOW I am boring? I have umteen characters of the Marvel Universe that rally around MY name. There are at least 10 different Comic Books featuring characters based on different aspects of MY personality. So how is it I am boring? You take that back right now. If you don't, I'll sick X-Force on you. YOU HEAR ME? :P :D |
| #42JudgeDookieMay 10, 2008 15:41:32 | May I ask HOW I am boring? Um...I would say that you rally around the characters that represent your name--and, no doubt, the aspects of what you believe as your personality. That, alone, might make you boring. But, what do I know? ![]() Surprisingly, I find you utterly nonthreatening. So feel free to bring on the X-Force. They'll be a hell of a lot less boring than watching a baseball game. :D |
| #43Mournblade94May 18, 2008 14:04:50 | Yeah, I read the intro. Just wasn't sure exactly how wotc was going to handle the whole body of work. Well... that pretty much bites... I will likely stop reading FR fiction. I really DO understand the disappointment. I feel it to. However, characters stories DO end. They are not all like our PC characters. The star wars novels are the perfect example. Han, luke, leia... their story is over. But of course we keep it up because of marketing. However I think the current market is finally able to let these characters rest. Same with Mithril Hall characters. Their story is over. Great stories, but their time is over. New characters will make great new stories. I read Crystal Shard when it was released and read all the others in turn. |
| #44Mournblade94May 18, 2008 14:16:36 | May I ask HOW I am boring? Yes and all of those Umpteen characters will get their but handed to them by the avengers Cause the avengers are the true heroes![]() Of course some might get saved by Thor. Like Xfactor. |
| #45merrikcaleMay 18, 2008 20:25:12 | I really DO understand the disappointment. I feel it to. However, characters stories DO end. They are not all like our PC characters. However I think the current market is finally able to let these characters rest. But those characters keep going in the novels, don't they? |
| #46lord_karsusMay 19, 2008 0:32:04 | However I think the current market is finally able to let these characters rest. -And yet, this has yet to happen. In fact, counter-productive measures have been taken. Invincible? Horrible, horrible book. I rarely spend the $26 on hardcovers, and this reinforces why I do that. I wouldn't have been able to wait for the soft cover, though. I had to be up-to-date. |
| #47Mournblade94May 19, 2008 16:08:44 | But they didn't meet a natural end. They just pulled the plug Well what is a natural end? Do we need to read about them until they die? Or what if they all sat around and said "we're done adventuring."? Is that a natural end? I don't hink we need to follow characters until they hit their final ressurection. Honestly, the end of halfling's gem wouold of been a great end. (NO I am not saying the later books are bad by any means). The natural end you speak of is arbitrary. But those characters keep going in the novels, don't they? Yes they do... but it is more like watching a poor animal that should be dead crawl along dragging its entrails. With the exception of Timothy Zahn, The star wars novels have a lot to be desired and I have read them ALL up to Unified Force. The comics are good, but again the comics are KOTOR or Legacy now. I liked some of the Yuuzhan vong books. If it wasn't for my Star Wars campaign though I probably would not have liked those. Lord Karsus I cannot speak for the later star wars novels of the past 2 years. I cannot stomoach them anylonger. I am aware of the story line because i can only bear to read synopses, though I HAD to read the Boba Fett fluff. I would agree with you the new story seems to have alot to be desired. I say just let Dark Horse take over! |

That, I agree with (well, except for the "great stories" part, they weren't always so great). I've said before that I think 20+ novels is more than enough for any single character. |
