Seriously, there's nothing on Forgotten Realms yet. All I have are some articles that say "we blew up that nasty old setting". What am I supposed to show my players to get them to want to play FR? All I can say right now is that Wizards claims it "doesn't suck now". That's not very compelling.

Some peoples read too much in those articles, with a fearfull mind.

While true, I'm still interested in learning more and the sooner the better.

With FR being the first of the settings to be released, it's going to be something of a "flagship" setting for the new ruleset, so I would think it should get some serious hype...

... just as soon as the core books are released.

No worries. I hear 'N Sync's new album, Into the Realms, is suppose to explain it all.

-Being as that there is no schedule for the Countdown to the Realms articles availible to us, you are going to have to wait until more of these are released, and then when the 4e campaign setting itself is published. And, or course, there is the collective knowledge of the boards, to help with any questions/concerns.

No. With Karsus, there is always knowledge. Even if he really knows it or not. :D

Well, a new podcast is up. Yay!

Yeah, this is about 95% "why old FR players shouldn't hate us". As someone oblivious to the Realms, I still got nothing. Red Wizards are fixed... Yay for you? I don't know what those are. You said they're scary or something.

Look, Wizards, in 6 weeks or so the first 4e adventure comes out. If there isn't anything to entice me to play forgotten realm besides "swordmages", I'm starting with the generic setting and I'm not gonna be switching games 2 months later.

If you're not "enticed" by what you see with 4E FR by now, I don't imagine anything insightful coming down the pipe before the launch of 4E.

And I agree that a good part of the podcast appeared to be more a case of explaining how 4E FR = goodhappyfun to the existing FR fan base. The disgruntled part of the FR fan base has been pretty vocal about their opinion of the 4E FR they've seen to date, and it hasn't been pretty. Of course neither are the changes WotC has made.

I'm willing to give it a shot just because. My players are a group of experienced gamers who loathe the Realms for the usual nonsensical reasons (primarly that Drizt and Elminster exist).

However, even I'm starting to realize it's a little foolish to base a campaign around so little existing information. There's just not enough out there on the new realms for me to make a decision in favor of them. I don't even know what the release schedule is for books beyond the player's guide in september. There's supposed to be a DM's guide or something to the Realms as well? When does that come out?

I could go back and look at stuff from the old realms, but I thought the point was that this was supposed to be an exciting new setting for the players (and dms) to explore. It's supposed to be something that you don't need the old FR books to play, yet every description I've read has been "Remember this place? Yeah, it's totally different now!" But not even good descriptions. The descriptions clearly ignore the parts that are the same, so that I don't even get a complete picture of the new place.

And Drizt and Elminster are still there, so my players still hate it.

So far I have the following list:

List of Reasons to Play Forgotten Realms in Fall:
-it's a setting
-swordmage
-maybe the crazy magic areas with floating rocks are cool?

List of Reasons not to
-players hate it
-would have to delay playing for two months (on faith alone of awesome setting)

P.S. I know it's a dumb reason to hate a setting. But I also know "you're stupid!" is a bad argument to get someone to give something a try.

Chris Perkins already stated that they have a timeline for when and what they will leak to the community concerning FR. There will be more. How substantive, I don't know.

Being familiar with marketing practices, I know you don't want something like this to go dead or grow stale. I imagine in the weeks leading up to FR's release, WotC will leak something juicy just to get the hype up right before its launch.

I'm interested in seeing their marketing campaign as well. Now I'm not any kind of marketing genius, but so far the reaction from those in my gaming circle towards FR (and 4E for that matter) has been less than positive.

And I agree.

For now, we are simply stuck. Reading novels are the best glimpse into what they have in store you are going to get.

Oh, no. I definitely heard something.

Unfortunately, I may have heard it from you. ;)

-Ah, there you go. Thanks. I went looking for it myself, but nothing popped up. It wasn't in any of the "4e groups" I was looking at.

Yup--no prob. Though I am surprised you weren't able to find it. Just because I haven't joined in on the discussions, doesn't mean I haven't visited some of those same "4e groups" groups you have. ;)

I would figure people might be a bit more interested in this.

-I meant on Amazon.com. The adventure wasn't linked with the 4e DM's Guide to the Realms, and the 4e FRCS.

Its a sublink under the FR campaign guide. Look for the adventure, get routed to the FR campaign setting. More marketing crap, I would imagine.

There were rumours (lame rumours, now that I verify) that there is a FR DMG in addition to a FR campaign setting book.

What's the spellguard? What's scepter tower?

-Yes, there are two: A campaign setting overview book, and a DM's guide tip book.

What's the spellguard? What's scepter tower?

-See Lost Empires of Faerûn, page 100-101.
