| #1SpeechFeb 10, 2010 14:56:48 | So I've been trying to piece together some semblance of a timeline (mostly in my mind) to understand what has happened within the realms. There are threads on these boards that are very helpful (thanks to LordManshoon) but I'm wondering does WOTC plan to make these details plain? or are we going to get a "whatever you want to do is cool with us" message? One of the biggest draws of the Realms for me was the detail and feel of the setting...with no real information about its current state...why would I care anything about it now? If it's going to be a mostly undetailed setting...I can make my own and save myself lots of cash. I'd rather to not make my own setting...because of all of the work involved-but if I have to fill in so many holes about the Realms-what's the point of using them. I guess I'm looking for some idea of what WOTC plans to do with the Realms-if it's going to be detailed and mostly spelled out OR if they'll continue to put out smatterings of info and leave the players/dm's to fill in the blanks. |
| #2The_SilverswordFeb 10, 2010 16:29:35 | I feel your pain. This is definitely the least detailed incarnation of the Realms. I would love to see more 4e Realmslore. Theyer not putting out any more source books, just support on DDI and the novels. And i suppose to a lesser extent through the LFR. They have put out some good article detailing this or that part of the Realms, still alot of gaps in there, and yes they are expecting you to fill those in. They are trying to make everybody happy i supppose, alot of people complained that the Realms just had too much going on it. But theyre still putting stuff out to satisify people like me who want more Lore, but theyre not putting it out fast enough, and not nearly in enough quantity, just a small article here a small article there. What they should do, if making splat books for the Realms is too much, make PDFs or something. They should do something like Dragon Magazine, but just for the Realms. I would definitely renew my subscription just for that alone. But any way to really answer your question, I have no inside knowledge and i would assume that theyll continue the way they are going. |
| #3Keith53Feb 10, 2010 18:37:01 | I am not a WotC insider, but I don't see signs of any change on the horizon. What I think of as the FR story team will publish DDI articles (mostly in Dragon) and the novels will be published, and adventures will be mostly supplied through Living Forgotten Realms (and a few adventures in Dungeon). You might see the odd superadventure at some point. I don't think the upper management is convinced that publishing a lot of setting related material gives you a postive revenue stream based upon historical data, and for some reason, they don't want to bankrupt their company. Go figure! Part of the current concept for the Forgotten Realms is for leaving lots of openness for the home DM to fill in with his or hers spin on what is happening, and making the amount of Realmslore less of an obstacle for new players and new DMs to learn. YMMV. Keith |
| #4Matt_JamesFeb 10, 2010 18:55:40 | Keep an eye out as well for DDI Realmslore articles. You will find nuggets that will help fill in the timeline- albeit slowly. I hope this helps, even if just a bit. |
| #5SpeechFeb 10, 2010 20:11:20 | Thanks for the responses everyone, I am a DDI subscriber and will be for a while longer. I like what they're putting out with it and if this is a way to get FR info...all the better. As far as not wanting to bankrupt the company...alienating loyal customers can have the same effect. Either way, I'll do the waiting thing until I get tired of it...or until more info is "revealed". Be well |
| #6gomeztooFeb 11, 2010 0:15:51 | There are also events in LFR, and lore in LFR, but it is a bit hidden (and generally in less abundance than in DDI). Note that in LFR, the timeline moved to 1480 DR, following Monument of the Ancients. |
| #7wulfgarsFeb 12, 2010 6:02:36 | That was something i didn´t know.... Monument of the ancients?! |
| #8sn0wm4nFeb 12, 2010 7:37:53 | Monument of the ancients is an adventure in issue 170 of Dungeon magazine. I don't know much more than that, as I haven't been keeping updated about the realms as much as I'd like...though feel free to ask about something specific and I'll try to unearth content about it |
| #9SpeechFeb 12, 2010 8:02:37 | I've never been one for the Living campaigns...there's never anything close enough to me being run, plus playing with random strangers can tend to be a profound crap shoot in my experience. Is there any way for me to procure the LFR info without religiously partaking in the events? I wouldn't have any problem catching a game or two-but I've yet to find a "living" game I wanted to return to. I do understand that I can run an event myself and gain the info that way....but my DM skills are seriously lacking (I get much too nervous running games) and there isn't a whole lot of places to run public games in my area. Thanks! |
| #10eriksdbFeb 12, 2010 9:24:32 | Monument of the Ancients is a brilliant 4e FR adventure penned by the James brothers (Brian R. James of Grand History of the Realms fame, and his brother Matt James, who's been bringing you quality DDI stuff for the past year, and has posted above). I assisted in a very cool playtest session for it, as well. I highly recommend checking it out, if you can get yourself access to DDI. Cheers |
| #11sfdragonFeb 12, 2010 15:56:43 | which magazine is it in?? so I can make note of it |
| #1218DELTAFeb 12, 2010 16:34:43 | Dungeon 170.;) |
| #13sfdragonFeb 12, 2010 20:06:00 | thanks its noted |
| #14PromitheasFeb 14, 2010 11:20:14 | This year's sales, I believe, will dictate wizard's next steps. If dark sun and gamma world make bigger profits than what was expected from fr or eberron supplements there is no reason they should abandon their bussiness plan. It means we are the minority. If not, perhaps they'll stop producing new settings and start supporting fr/eberron. I guess time and people's wallets will tell. |
| #15sfdragonFeb 14, 2010 13:01:08 | I do think that DArk SUN being one of the better settings, it should do well.... anyway I predict that wotc will have to drop best of dragon and dungeon from a hardcover to a softcover when they end up having to make FR anual, DS: Annual etcc |
| #16DoctorBadWolfFeb 25, 2010 2:06:48 | I wonder when we'll find out what next year's setting will be. Unless it's Gamma World, which will disapoint me. it's not really a dnd setting, as such, and I understand it will be a somewhat different game using the core 4e module. I'm really hoping for a "real" dnd setting, whether that's a new one, or dragonlance. (I know, there are others, but of the old settings still untouched, I want dragonlance. ) |
| #17Matt_JamesFeb 26, 2010 1:21:53 | Gamma World is being released in October of this year. I don't think it counts as one of the D&D settings. 2010 is the year of Dark Sun. |
| #18The_SilverswordFeb 26, 2010 1:52:23 | I'm hoping 2011 will see the 4e Oriental Adventures released, with Kara Tur. I was so dissappointed in the 3e version cause it did not feature Kar Tur. And apreantly some major stuff went down there, all those refugees and the Yakuza coming into Faerun, so I would say they was hit pretty hard by the Spellplague as well, perhaps they traded off portions with Abeir as well, That would be onther setting I would like to see, Abeir! But I dont think they'll do them, to tied in with the Realms, so they wouldnt count as their own setting. I really think they should do Greyhawk, If theyre not going to use it as the default setting, they need to do something with it. Or Mystara, I believe it was the first official setting, Blackmoor might of been first but it was still the same world just thousands of years in the past, or was Blackmoor Greyhawks past? I dont remember. |
| #19DoctorBadWolfFeb 26, 2010 5:15:16 | Gamma World is being released in October of this year. I don't think it counts as one of the D&D settings. 2010 is the year of Dark Sun. good. thanks. I dont remember. I wouldn't complain about Oriental Adventures, although the name has always struck me as exceedingly lame. I'd prefer something like Al Qadim, but I'll settle for anything interestingly done. Mystara would be cool, as would greyhawk, I suppose. I'd rather see Mystara, of the two. I'd also love to see a brand new setting that actually incorperates some of the PoL land stuff. You know, the core gods, core cosmology with all the core inhabitants of the different planes. I'd like to be able to get some real use out of some of the core fluff while playing in a published setting. :P |
| #20JorunhastFeb 26, 2010 7:31:56 | As much as I'd like to see Greyhawk updated, I agree that I'd very much like to see D&D create a new setting. I think it'd be very cool if they took the unspecified setting of the D&D movies (cheesy as they were) and develop not only Ishmir and it's surroundings, but the nation and the world as a brand new setting. |
| #21gray_richardsonFeb 26, 2010 20:57:06 | My guess is that they have plans for Dragonlance at some point. Although, I whole-heartedly second an interest in Kara-Tur. I would really love to see them do it up right. The Spellplague gives them carte-blanche to change what they don't like and re-make it into something truly worthy of an Asian-themed fantasy milieu that is also firmly grounded in the Forgotten Realms. |
| #22Nai_CalusFeb 26, 2010 22:26:03 | I know next to nothing about Greyhawk itself, but I want GH's gods back. :P I love Planescape, but I don't want them *touching* it after what they did to FR. Sodding hells, they complained about *FR* having too many gods... |
| #23The_SilverswordFeb 27, 2010 15:15:12 | I dont think they will do a Planescape setting, it has already been assimilated into the core setting, samething with Ravenloft, and Spelljammer. They did introduce Draconians in the latest Draconomicon, but hanvt really used any thing else from the Dragonlance setting. I liked Dragonlance, but after the War of the Lance what else was there? Kinda like Babylon 5, after they won the Shadow War that show really lost steam. |
| #24sfdragonFeb 27, 2010 16:18:46 | I'm kind of hoping they will do a 4e setting of Midkemia... btw there is a party at mothers |
| #25The_SilverswordFeb 27, 2010 16:27:35 | I'm kind of hoping they will do a 4e setting of Midkemia... Midkemia? Havnt heard of that one, Is that a TSR setting? and partying with your mom!? LAME! of course I dont know your mom so she might be quite the party animal. My mom gets very religious when she gets drunk and starts goin on about the bible, not fun at all. |
| #26sfdragonFeb 27, 2010 16:51:20 | Reymond Feist www.crydee.com/ and no, its not a tsr setting... in fact wotc doesnt own it at all and the correct response Silversword to there is a party at mother's is, and soon a good time would be had by all..... pass phrase to the Mocker's guild, the best thieves in all of Krondor. |
| #27The_SilverswordFeb 27, 2010 16:56:21 | Ahhh IC, well I dont think theyll do a setting based of that, not wizbro any way, some 3rd party might, although they did do a Wheel of Time setting for 3.x, so who knows? And I would watch out about giving away theives guilds pass words. |
| #28sfdragonFeb 27, 2010 19:19:20 | hehehehehe.... I'll just tell them Jimmy said hi |
| #29Matt_JamesMar 02, 2010 10:25:27 | BIRTHRIGHT! |
| #30sfdragonMar 02, 2010 13:28:04 | Greyhawk!!! |
| #31The_SilverswordMar 02, 2010 19:06:01 | I had almost forgotten about Birthright, ok so i did. I was never really much into it, but I knew alot of people that was. As i understand it, it focused more on political intrigue and not so much going into the Lich Dragons cave and killing him and taking his stuff. Im not sure how well that would translate into 4e, but I would be interested in finding out. And I would like to see them do something with Greyhawk, its such an iconic setting, the first ever AD&D setting, and it was created by the man himself, Gary Gygax, who sadly is no longer with us. It would be a great homage to Gary to do something with Greyhawk! I would say that they should do something with Dave Arneson's world of Blackmoor, but some one beat them too it. www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products... |
| #32suin_bahhar_02Mar 03, 2010 10:20:47 | I think Lankhmar's world Newhon deserves to be be back in the spotlight. It's a great setting with gritty miedieval streetlife and largely morally grey areas. Sorcery is devided into white and black magic. I'd like to see this worked out into a flexible magic system that probably use arcane and shadow power sources. I want maps of the City of Lankhmar redone in glorious color. I think a problem is that Newhon (Birthrite too) is very humanocentric. No easy fits for tieflings, drow and dragonborn everyone loves. WotC could bring out lots of tweaked human race variants perhaps... I'd be mildly interested if they threw something completely new out next, though. |
| #33DoctorBadWolfMar 08, 2010 2:11:32 | Hyrule. :D |
| #34Nai_CalusMar 08, 2010 17:49:06 | Shadowrun, for the ultimate fluff/crunch mismatch. |
| #35sfdragonMar 08, 2010 18:46:06 | is Shadowrun even wotc IP?? midkemia from R. Feist |
