| #1andrueJun 30, 2009 5:53:13 | Did I miss it? I have been away from the world for a while... The only thing I can find is Scepter Tower of Spellgard. |
| #2MattDrozJun 30, 2009 7:57:05 | And... that's all you're going to get. Each setting is getting three books and three books only: A Player's Guide, a Campaign Guide and an Adventure. Anything more than that will be articles in Dungeon or Dragon magazine through DDi. |
| #3markustay63Jun 30, 2009 8:28:19 | Right. As far as printed materials go, the Realms have been 'shelved'. If you want more, you either pony-up for the DDi, and/or become an LFR player/DM. Until then... enjoy Eberron. That should keep you busy for another year. :P |
| #4lord_karsusJun 30, 2009 12:17:16 | -Many of the "core" adventures offered via online DUNGEON magazine have Forgotten Realms adaptations. -And don't forget the Loudwater waste-of-a-chapter in the FRCG as an adventure. Sort of. |
| #5nightseerJun 30, 2009 14:22:58 | Until then... enjoy Eberron. That should keep you busy for another year. :P The year after that will be Dragonlance....:P ![]() |
| #6markustay63Jun 30, 2009 21:30:52 | Yay I get to take a 'year off', then... Never cared for Dragginglance... to much of a 'theme' going on there, and if you don't like the theme, your crap out of luck. Never cared for Draconians, and now I like them even less since FR got stuck with them. Which kinda brings me to my point... if FR has Dragon-ruled Kingdoms (in Returned Abeir and elsewhere), and Dragonborn... what purpose does DL serve now? Minotaurs and Kender? ![]() |
| #7lord_karsusJun 30, 2009 21:41:52 | Which kinda brings me to my point... if FR has Dragon-ruled Kingdoms (in Returned Abeir and elsewhere), and Dragonborn... what purpose does DL serve now? -Wasn't that always it's point (spoken from someone who never particularly liked or disliked Dragonlance)? :P |
| #8andrueJun 30, 2009 23:41:40 | And... that's all you're going to get. Each setting is getting three books and three books only: A Player's Guide, a Campaign Guide and an Adventure. Anything more than that will be articles in Dungeon or Dragon magazine through DDi. Aw, man. That sucks! Can i get Dungeon and Dragon back issues from D&Di? |
| #9nightseerJul 01, 2009 0:00:03 | Yay Yay I get to take 'Fourth Edition off', then... ;) |
| #10Janx_14Jul 01, 2009 0:08:16 | Last i checked, when you get DDI you get all issues of Dungeon and Dragon that have been online to date. Wizard's said they planed to change this, but i do not believe they have yet. |
| #11AegeriJul 01, 2009 1:09:18 | Did I miss it? I have been away from the world for a while... The only thing I can find is Scepter Tower of Spellgard. There is also the Icy Tower adventure. Which coincidentally happens to overlap entirely with the same levels Scepter Tower of Spellgard has ![]() |
| #12sfdragonJul 01, 2009 3:20:17 | unless its been confirmed...... it might not be dragonlance, the last I heard is that wotc said it had an A in it somewhere |
| #13StiggerJul 01, 2009 7:14:41 | Mystara... Planescape... Ravenloft... Dark Sun... Spelljammer... Greyhawk... Al-Qadim... Maztica... hmmm... |
| #14IluvrienJul 01, 2009 9:35:07 | I wasn't going to highlight that particular issue, Stigger... but... good point, well made. Next! :D |
| #15markustay63Jul 01, 2009 9:43:03 | THANK GOD Birthright doesn't have an 'A' in it.... ![]() Never mind... just looked it up... the planet is called Aebrynis! ![]() Aebrynis... uh-OH... ![]() |
| #16lord_karsusJul 01, 2009 9:57:51 | -How do you pronounce that Abeiranus? Whoa...![]() |
| #17StiggerJul 01, 2009 15:43:38 | It wasn't in the setting title though, so we might still be safe... I don't recall it having enough tentacles to really appeal to BC though, so that could be an upside. :D |
| #18nightseerJul 01, 2009 21:35:03 | BC could always add a good heaping helping of tentacles just for you! :P ![]() |
| #19gregt_314Jul 01, 2009 22:15:18 | What purpose does DL serve now? Not meaning to troll the Forgotten Realms forums, but if you're genuinely interested: * Rideable, flawed dragons in a range of societal roles that players of all levels can interact with meaningfully * Human, compassionate deities that have more to do than give commands and manipulate destinies * Rich backstory largely unremembered by the current age, allowing players to know as little or as much history as they like without suffering (only applies to games set in the War of the Lance era, though) * Continent large enough to be diverse, small enough to be travelled across during the course of an adventure * Strong points-of-light-esque focus on welcoming "home base" areas for PCs surrounded by large areas of lawlessness and mystery. * Association with well-loved book series and classic module line * Kender, tinker gnomes, gully dwarves, draconians, and civilised minotaurs, which really should be mechanically different from the current 4E races but at the very least are substantially different in fluff. * Resurrection and planar travel are so rare as to be practically non-existent * Adaptable, memorable chivalric orders (Knights of Solamnia, Knights of Takhisis) Dragonlance classically centred games around themes of faith, honour and friendship in a way that no other 4E setting has built into it; it does those ideas in the same way that Dark Sun looks at survival and sacrifice and the way that the Forgotten Realms explores issues of exploration, civilisation and community. |
| #20StiggerJul 02, 2009 2:32:57 | That would pretty much sum up why I didn't particularly care for DL actually... irked me greatly the few times I tried to choke down one of the books. If you're into it, cool, but its definitely not for me. |
| #21faraerJul 02, 2009 9:51:19 | What purpose does Dragonlance serve? Krynn is the only TSR/Wizards setting that's proper high fantasy, and it's likely to remain so, with the prevalence of 'gritty', pop and rules/powergaming influences. |
| #22markustay63Jul 02, 2009 12:10:24 | He lost me at 'rideable dragons' - it was that one piece of art that was shown EVERYWHERE when DL was first being advertised that turned me off to the setting in the first place... .. and then a truly horrible DM that put the finishing touches on it for me (the guy ran adventures DIRECTLY out of the novels - I mean he actually read from the novel while running the game, and told us what we were saying and doing!!!) However, the rest of that stuff mentioned by GregT_314 sounds interesting (except for the draconians - too over-the-top for me). I love knightly orders, so it might be worth taking a second look at. I have borrowed both Kender and Manotaurs (my name for the smaller, more anthropomorphic Krynn versions) for my Realms, as well as all the monsters (I always buy the MM for that world), so it's not like I hate it, or am unfamiliar with it. ;) |
| #23MattDrozJul 02, 2009 12:48:54 | .. and then a truly horrible DM that put the finishing touches on it for me (the guy ran adventures DIRECTLY out of the novels - I mean he actually read from the novel while running the game, and told us what we were saying and doing!!!) ![]() Probably a good thing we never let my ex-wife run a DL Campaign. I can see her doing the same. |
| #24markustay63Jul 02, 2009 13:59:07 | The only thing about the entire evening I enjoyed is when we confronted the dragon - I think it may have been Takhisis - at the end. We were running characters straight out of the novel (naturally), including using the official stats. We were having our butts handed to us and two of us were down (I think we died, but the DM wouldn't allow that). Since the story ended with the heroes winning (always highly unlikely yet mandatory in a novel), he just stopped the combat before the dragon won and announced "after exchanging a few more blows, your group cleverly manages to find the monster's weakness and defeat it. You find some healing potions in the horde and everyone is fine now". :D He just couldn't stand the idea that the ending wasn't going to happen like it did in the book, and I think he was in-shock when he realized that the official stats, as presented in sourcebooks, didn't work-our when the party actually confronted the BBG. It almost made the whole thing worthwhile to see his face screw-up in consternation. :P He may have learned a valuable lesson that day about taking fandom too far - I think he got over his 'obsession' with Dragonlance after that. I never enjoyed getting creamed so much. ![]() |
| #25StiggerJul 02, 2009 14:23:37 | Heh, I could definitely see that. I've yet to see official stats of someone that really did justice to their supposed level of greatness though in any game, not just D&D. |
