Hello All,

As some of you may know, WotC has schedule a week of downtime starting next Tuesday the 18th.

During that time, I'd like to invite you to come visit the Candlekeep.com forums.

Plenty going on over there. Post your questions to Ed Greenwood and other Realms game designers and novel authors and talk with Realms fans.

Overall a great place to get your Realms forum fix in the interim.

See you there!

[EDIT]

It would seem our Forum Lead has posted a request to the VCL thread asking that this thread be closed.

Given the popularity of that website, as well the fact that we're all expressing our opinions and not actually bashing any website in either direction, one would think this wouldn't be necessary.

If you find this thread and the discussion useful and if you would like to continue participating, stop by the link above to lend a positive word so this thread can remain open and so that our conversation may continue.

Actually Sage, or Old Sage on these forums has laid the Moderator Smackdown on 4E Bashing and Designer Bashing.

You can freely discuss what you don't like, but not in a negative or immature manner. The site has gotten alot better since then.

I had followed the link and went to check out the original Airspur article comments and that was enough to turn me away. Two warnings in that one thread, and maligning an author because his past history in FR wasn't long enough? Bad enough with the canon fundamentalism without demanding the evangelists be born into the faith on top of it.

Really Pamela, I've just looked at that thread on CK and actually what I saw were two people (it is obvious who they are if you look at the thread) complaining more about 4E itself than the article. And you know what? They were pulled up on it by the other members of the thread. The greater proportion of posts in that thread were congratulatory of the author and positive about the article. (Last post 11 days ago)

I am a little surprised, therefore, to hear you relate your experience of it.

Personally I adore everything about CK except the way it fails to keep track of (un)read material in a way that I would like.

Iluvrien, I am glad that you, Mr Miscellany and 38Delta enjoy the site and my apologies if I seemed to slur your taste in any way; I do not mean that at all.

I didn't count the number of negative posts. It was a short thread (2 pages tops?) and as I said, managed to garner two warnings in that short period of time as well as a comment slurring a writer for no reason, it seemed, apart from the fact that he isn't Greenwood and dares to write for 4e FR. Another person made a post which implied that this was a regular occurrence. If that's what occurs in one short thread, why would I want to look around and run into more of the same? I get enough of it here (though it does seem a bit quieter here lately *knock on wood*) but at least I know this board, like it, and hang out at my other haunts here.

Actually, Pamela, I do not consider your post a slur on my own tastes in any way, shape or form. Not least because in your posting history you have never shown a tendency towards that kind of judgmentalism.

I was actually more concerned that you might be preventing yourself from enjoying a vibrant FR community. Yes, there is a little more anti-4e sentiment there these days than you get here now, but still less than you got here a year or so ago. Rabid rants there do attract warnings (as you pointed out) and now seem to be showing signs of being confined to specific scrolls that, of course, you are under no obligation to read. I would make the play that you do not judge all CK by the conduct of the most rabid poster there.

Pamela,

I admit to some surprise to see your reaction to CK. I think perhaps if you take a second look, maybe visit the Chamber of Sages section where one can post questions to the likes of Ed Greenwood, Brian R. James, Steven Schend and so on...or visit the Forgotten Realms Book Club for some group reading and discussion, that you'd find the width and breadth of opinion, as well as the quality of discussion, is something not hampered by the negative sentiments of a few scribes.

Please look for my PM also.

I mostly don't go to Candlekeep because I already keep up with far too many forums as it is.

That and half the time someone mentions Corellon in a thread it seems like a bunch of the people from the Eilistraee fansite come in and get nasty about it if it deals with her at all. The constant elf/Corellon bashing here gets annoying enough, but I feel comfortable throwing humour at it via acting over-zealous, but I don't feel similarly comfortable about the atmosphere there and have thus avoided it and simply browse the threads every couple months for any interesting discussions I've missed.

It's not as bad as if you actually make the mistake of going to the Eilistraee fansite and reading their forums, but it still throws me off and makes me not want to post there with people who act so off-putting over one of my favourite topics. Yech.

Eh, not much there that we haven't already seen here. It's not like this forum is a great shining bastion of pro-FR4E-ness. Heck, they probably have more active moderation there to keep a lid on over-rabid reactions. The WotC seem far more free for all.

I appreciate the effort Mr Miscellany. Thank you.

Thanks for the thought, Mr Miscellany but no way - the anti-4e sentiment there makes this place look like Sesame Street. :P

I won't deny that Candlekeep has experienced its fair share of extensive anti-4e sentiment. However, it has lessened [somewhat] from the examples of heavily anti-4e sentiment that ran through Candlekeep during the same time last year.

Actually Sage, or Old Sage on these forums has laid the Moderator Smackdown on 4E Bashing and Designer Bashing.

You can freely discuss what you don't like, but not in a negative or immature manner. The site has gotten alot better since then.

And the "smackdown" [:D] 38DELTA refers to is located here:- http://forum.candlekeep.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12783

I had followed the link and went to check out the original Airspur article comments and that was enough to turn me away. Two warnings in that one thread, and maligning an author because his past history in FR wasn't long enough? Bad enough with the canon fundamentalism without demanding the evangelists be born into the faith on top of it.

That was before I posted the declaration [which I linked to above]. Since that time, the anti-4e sentiment has gradually reduced in terms of both frequency and methodology.

And since the time of the declaration, I've been monitoring most 4e discussions closely at Candlekeep. And I've yet to issue any further warnings or cautionary messages about inappropriate commentary directed toward the process and development of the 4e Realms.

... but I don't feel similarly comfortable about the atmosphere there and have thus avoided it and simply browse the threads every couple months for any interesting discussions I've missed.

I understand. If you feel there's anything we can do for the site that would make it more comfortable for you, please don't hesitate to contact me via PM to discuss it.

Cool Sage. It is a shame it took you guys so long to keep those killjoys in check. I used to check out those forums alot until 4E was announced. Then the dark, dark days of Comic Book Guy took over (a bit melodramatic maybe but pretty close to the truth). After the Comic Book Guy's came out in full force I did not even want to just lurk there and see what was up.

Anyway this is all good news.

Plus I love the little negcomments by the obvious FR4E haters. They are just filled with the spirit ofComic Book Guy. Heh. Just let it goe folks.

I don't know if I could devote as much attention to it as I do this site, but it seems a good deal more... gods, how do I phrase this... "cozy", if you will.

That's fair enough. While I prefer the more intimate-styling of the FR community at Candlekeep, I can also acknowledge that it simply isn't for every Realms scribe.

We're hoping to expand somewhat with the update to Candlekeep 2. It won't be anything to match the scale here at Wizards, but we are interested in exploring alternate frameworks for both the main- and sub-forum shelves of Candlekeep.

Actually, I was complimenting Candlekeep's style (at least, I had intended for cozy to be a compliment:embarrass). Easier to relax when I'm on there than on here, simply because things seem more focused. I appreciate and enjoy the intimacy I've seen there.

That whole thing about devoting attention is simply because this site is massive and has a lot of nooks and crannies to explore. Like I said, Candlekeep is large, but maintains more focus and doesn't seem as hectic. I'm brand new to both of these sites, so I might eat my words one day, when I find I'm more on Candlekeep than on this site.

I do choose to lurk however, since there does still seem to be a diehard core who actively hate 4E and everything to do with it (I did think carefully about my use of the word 'hate' but it really does seem to be the motivation of a vocal few). It makes me a little uncomfortable as myself, my partner and my son, do enjoy the new edition.

Having said that, I do appreciate recent efforts by the majority of posters there to tone down the rhetoric and emphasise what they love about FR, rather than the niggles. The Realms are a fantastic place whatever the edition and I enjoy the majority of my anonymous time at Candlekeep. Smile

Coming from the other side a bit, I only wished all fans of the 4E Realms were as understanding as the ones who have expressed their opinions on this thread.

This is not always the case (even in these FR boards) as a vocal minority of so-called Realms fans have plainly made their utter hatred of the pre-4E Old Realms well known through all the forums. Unfortunately, 4E and the New Realms are almost always associated with that original anti-Realms negativity. Most of the anti-4E sentiment is a reaction to that. It doesn't help that the displacement of the Old Realms in favor of the New Realms is often seen by some as essentially WotC addressing the grievances of those who hated the old Realms.

Hopefully with that understanding of where the anti-4E sentiment stems from, regular fans of the Realms don't look too much into those negative statements.

Yeah, I don't post there for that reason as this forum was bad enough on release that it really poisoned the well in terms of how I felt about the 4E realms over time. Two forums of essential the same thing would have just driven me to give up FR even faster. I'm still running one game, but I won't be running any more in a years time.

This is not always the case (even in these FR boards) as a vocal minority of so-called Realms fans have plainly made their utter hatred of the pre-4E Old Realms well known through all the forums.

What I've noticed is people who hated the old realms hate the 4E realms just for being it. Many of the changes were made to appeal to many of those individuals, but I am betting simply because it had the words "Forgotten Realms" on it they just wrote it off immediately anyway (as you make in your point below).

It does give one pause to wonder if it was worth the headaches they caused themselves at all.

#47

Dark_Wizard_02

Aug 29, 2009 17:57:17

Right, I often wonder whether with a more sensible or subtle approach if WotC could have reconciled the wants of both groups, or at least the majority of both.

There are always going to be some people who hate a setting, no matter what the setting contains. Literally, if the Realms became another setting entirely (say Greyhawk or Eberron with slightly changed details and names), it would still be seen under the Realms brand. Some people will always think another setting did something better.

This is a question for the next edition perhaps. We have the Realms as they are presented now and hopefully, through the efforts of fans, the Realms as they were and still are to a great many.

I personally like the Spellplague and 100-year jump. However, I can appreciate that others don't. Finding a solution that would satisfy everyone - in my opinion - is impossible. They were going to step on toes, no matter what they did.

#50

Dark_Wizard_02

Aug 30, 2009 18:07:27

Thanks, though I'm only speaking from how I see the differences.

Personally I could have handled either the Spellplague or the 100-year jump.* Getting both of them loaded on to the setting, with the pre-Plague deicides, Returned Abeir, and the new rules edition is making it very difficult for me to get into the setting like I did the Old Realms.

I guess a lot of it is personal preference. Many of the games I played took place in Halruaa, Chondath, the Old Empires, and the loose city-states of the Western Heartlands. Unfortunately all of them more or less don't exist now as they did in the previous Realms. I gain no lore from the new Realms that I want. I liked following the lore and storylines of the established core areas of the Realms, but I liked the periphery regions as they were for my own games. The New Realms offers very little of either to me, so I become a non-participant.

*With the Spellplague, I would have liked it better if the new setting took place shortly after that pivotal even, within a generation so the full consequences are still felt and have to be dealt with. For the 100-year jump, I would have liked to see the changes spread out over a century without major RSEs. The history would be filled in with broad strokes, leaving a progress of the changes and enough background to work from.

That is a statement I have seen some people make, and I agree that that particular knife cuts both sides.

But my experience so far with anti-4th ed Realms sentiments has little relation to that particular aspect. Yes, catering to the 'Hasbro crowd' (needlessly simplifying things here) is not the right motivations to make changes to the Realms. (It may be a motivation to change the makeup of what you publish, though).

But most people seem to just not like the changes themselves.

That is also understandable. I did at one point get tired though of people using their discontent as an excuse to stalk every thread with negative posts (and I am not just talking Candlekeep here - the FR boards here have been a cespit of vitriol as well for a time).

I mean, I get it. You don't like it. I don't like some of the changes either. I would also have done it different. But can we move on?

I expect that Candlekeep - and a part on these boards - will still take quite some time dwelling in pre-plague Realms.

The majority of questions to Ed Greenwood (the thread I frequest most) are still about 3rd edition Realms, though I will add that that is also due to NDA's.

At some point though, I like to read 4thed lore. I can look up older lore if I want, and use it when needed. 4th ed lore is now something that is in demand.

The reasons are many and varied. The fundamental dislike of the actual changes is another reason. It sometimes is enough of a reason for many, sometimes it is related to other reasons.

Though to go back to what I said, don't let that get to you too much. However, reading your post, I can't help but feel some implied frustration in your responses. I may be wrong as the internet is not a good medium for mood, emotions, body language, inflections, etc., but your wording seems like you're really hooked up on this mostly past negativity. I feel most of that passed, but posts like that don't really help in the long run. "Complaining about the complainers" This type of post serves to remind everyone of the past unpleasant period.

I expect that Candlekeep - and a part on these boards - will still take quite some time dwelling in pre-plague Realms.

This statement seems like there is something wrong or misguided with active, hearty discussion of the Pre-plague Realms.

The majority of questions to Ed Greenwood (the thread I frequest most) are still about 3rd edition Realms, though I will add that that is also due to NDA's.

It's partly NDAs, especially many new and still shiny 4E era ones.

It is also because Ed has over 40 years worth of thoughts and lore on the old Realms. Despite being involved and up to date on the 4E Realms, he is far and above more knowledgeable about the old Realms (and the Realms in general), published and unpublished. It's just logical and natural. Ed is happy and willing to answer 4E questions provided he has the information and it is not locked under NDAs.

At some point though, I like to read 4thed lore. I can look up older lore if I want, and use it when needed. 4th ed lore is now something that is in demand.

Gomez

It would appear your problem lies with WotC and not with fans of the Old Realms. WotC controls the flow and release of lore about the New 4E Realms, mostly through LFR and DDI.

The fans of the old Realms are just continuing doing what they've always done, discussing the Old Realms, asking Ed questions pertaining to that version of the Realms or that era of time.

You may merely look up old Realms lore if you want and when you need, but fans of the Old Realms use that pre-4E lore right now. To Old Realms fans, 4E lore is just not in demand for them. It does not occur to them to ask for it. It does occur to them to ask for lore on the previous edition.

I don't think it's true that to all "Old Realms Fans" 4E lore is not in demand or not of any use.

Even diehard fans who turn their noses up at anything not written by Ed Greenwood will still take an interest in his work on Returned Abeir, as well as any other location that they hear about online which is attributed to Ed.

It should also be noted that Realms fans of all stripes ask Ed about the post-Spellplague Realms, which he freely gives to the limits that NDAs will allow.  His ability to generate responses isn't lessened simply because the subject is the post-Spellplague Realms, either.

I consider myself a fan of the Realms in its entirety.  I've played in the setting since it was released in the 1980s.  I absolutely love my 4E Realms campaign and find that what the post-Spellplague Realms has to offer me is more than enough to bring the Realms to life.

Dark_Wizard_02

Right, in general fans of the Realms by and large, even diehard old Realms fans, are open to new lore of any kind, no matter the immediate use to them.

I do think there is a tendency for this or that segment to lean towards their favorite subjects, that is natural. They don't lean to their favorites so harshly as to stiffle other topics of lore. In my experience, there are few fans who solely rely on just Ed for lore. Even many of the so called diehard Realms fans (at least the ones I've seen post on these forums and Candlekeep) are very interested in works of many Realms designers and authors past and present (many of the 4E designers and authors included).

Hopefully nothing in my posts makes anyone think Old Realms fans are solely interested in the Old Realms to the exclusion of all else or that they only turn to Ed for lore or that Ed is only good for pre-4E lore. Nothing on my end of the discussion even went in that direction for a moment, though I am surprised that some appear to feel that that is the situation.

No worries, you didn't.

My last point was aimed at the general ether of the forums.

I think everyone here shares the same views and goals regarding the Realms, that is to see them prosper as a setting and used in their entirety for our own games and purposes. We spend a lot of time maneuvering within or around these factions, when we could be discussing setting or game related things. Aside from the sensitivies of a few naysayers from either side, there is very little stopping us from doing so.

Which is why I'm a bit surprised, despite most of the forums cooling down, that open discussion still seems restrained. The Realms has always faced negativity (there have always been people who hated some form of the Realms), especially pre-4E. For the most part, fans carried on.

I'm interested in 4e lore, as long as it is of fine quality. E.g. the Moonshaes article is easily importable into pre-Spellplague times, with a few adjustments.

I think the "thread crapping" that went on has something to do with it. Yes I was guilty of it too.

Its kinda sad that the pro and anti 4E FR factions started the "report post war". That ran alot of posters off.

I found the two-camp mentality here very strong during my visits here in the past. I've never posted much but I certainly didn't feel encouraged to stick around and wait for the next flame war to erupt.

I've found things have gotten calmer over the past month or so but the break with with the forums really seems to have cleared the air around here quite a bit. Fingers crossed it stays this way!

A lot of the time this was actually perfectly justified on both parties counts, but the thread crapping of any 4E related thread did get old and eventually did lead to furious use of the "report post" function.

Actually part of the reason I didn't join until the tail end of July. I lurked for a long time, but didn't feel particularly motivated to enter the fray. As a pro-4E fan who still disliked many of the changes, I wasn't exactly eager to hop on board and find myself in the middle of the battle. Not that it was guaranteed to happen, but there was a distinct possibility.

I think many of the posters at Candlekeep aren't familiar with the Post-plague Realms. That may contribute to the lack of active discussion in that area. Hopefully you don't think there is some sort of prevalent conspiracy amonst Pre-plague fans to actively deny discussion of the Post-plague Realms. In a way, Post-Plague fans have to jump start the discussion, get the ball rolling. All I can say is keep stimulating discussion in that direction if that's your inclination.

I know OA in relation to the Realms isn't a very popular, but whenever I can I try to participate in discussions on that area. Sometimes the discussion ends after a few posts, sometimes it becomes one of those mega-threads.

Do keep in mind that there will always be snark and outright hostility from some posters towards the Post-plague Realms, but I think the majority are open minded. Likewise there has always been rampant hostility towards the old Realms before everyone could be divided into a Pre-plague or Post-plague Realms. The things said about the 4E Realms pale in comparison to the years of complains against the Old Realms.

It is just a part of Realms fandom apparently. I don't expect that to go away ever. When 5E or 6E come around, there will be a some sort of pre- and post- division.

Well, great contenders, you have three tests to be aware of:

1) LK had planned to do an interview with Chris Perkins. So someone's going to have get in touch and take over.

2) The stickied threads will eventually have to be redone, particularly the Maps as Filson adds to our lovely collection.

3) The shuffling of threads and the wielding of the 'back on topic' stick.

So hop on it! :P

More seriously, they apparently stopped the Forum Lead program according to a post I'd read by killergm in Astrid's Parlour. I've yet to see any sign of a Forum Guide in our neck of the woods, let alone a VCL. Webster is the VCL for our area so I'm going to PM him to see what's up and if there's anyone headed our way. I think a Forum Guide would be OK.....if such a person was truly open minded, willing to entertain alternate opinions about the Realms, encouraged 4E talk, was/is willing to communicate to all forum members as an equal and overall wants everyone to have fun and enjoy themselves here, while building the community up.

Personally I want to see the Realms community grow again.  I want to see it become a (mostly) unified group of people who learn to rely on each other and enjoy each other's posts and ideas.

If a Forum Guide can be found who can facilitate this, I'm all for it.

18Delta, I think Mr Miscellany brought it up as an idea but I didn't want it; heck I was bringing up a couple of my own nominations at the time. I am not an expert on the Realms and never will be. I thought two Forum Leads would help to balance the camp mentality; if both felt represented, it might help calm things down a bit. In the end, I don't think anyone wanted the grief (rather understandably).

I think Aegeri is right, however, in that we don't need a Forum Guide at least in terms of any single authority to represent everyone on the FR forums. It will just bring back the two-camp mentality again. Taking a peek over at Eberron, they have sticky threads put up by different individuals. I think it would be wise to take a page from their book and just share the responsibilities over here as they come up.

I'm willing to move threads around; that's easy enough and about my speed. ;)  I've PMed Webster about the interview and he didn't know anything about it. I've now sent a PM to Mr Perkins. Now, who would like to do the honours of the Chris Perkins interview when/if he replies?

I think this community can manage itself. It's very hard for one person to represent the setting and the forum since it's been through many variations and has many factions, even since before 4E.

Although I am flattered, I am not unbiased for one thing (having took part in many of the various edition wars on this forum) and I don't believe a registration date from 2001 really means anything. I stopped playing and largely posting on this boards once 3.5 came out and only really came back during the novel 'wars' (so to speak, mostly as an observer and not a participant). I only really started posting again when 4E came out and of course that was right in the thick of the edition wars on the forum.
