Show
Wish Upon a Star
Warlocks sometimes seize arcane power by swearing pacts to questionable entities beyond the world. Such shortcuts are sometimes judged foolhardy by lore-wise wizards who spend years studying their way to mastery. The star pact connects its follower to what many believe are simple stars, though others describe them as horrific monsters. Do star pact warlocks swear their oaths to simple stars, to unfathomable entities of the Far Realm -- or are these oaths given to a terrible combination of the two? When you wish upon a star, horrifying dreams may follow.

See it now! (1 mb PDF)
The cold, brilliant, and utterly strange stars are a source of power for a select and rare breed of individuals: star pact warlocks. They reach out to the lightless space between the stars -- some say to the Far Realm beyond -- seeking power where few dare to dream. "Wish Upon a Star" presents new options for these daring warlocks, including several feats, powers, a paragon path, and even an epic destiny.

It's stuff like this that gives me hope for 4e. Lots of cool new stuff, especially class feats.

-I don't like the concept that these 'Stars' are powerful aberrations, but whatever. Or the "role-playing tips".

-Does anyone else think that the King-Killer Star is going to be retconned into Nihal, the "reddish star that writhes around the position it should hold in the heavens".

I see no reason to retcon it like that. I am not even really shure how the star and the ritual were connected (the novel story was kinda vague IIRC). I liked the crunch of the article - and considering that our FR Telos is the master of the Iron sky.... well I´steal some of the powers the parth and the destiny for our Telos. :D

-The planet-wide Mythal was keyed to "go on", and make the Dragons mad, when the King-Killer Star appeared in the sky. It was always vague as to what exactly the King-Killer was- A star? A comet?- so, based on how similar the entry for Nihal is, it seems a little too coincidental for me.

Actually it would not be bad if the would retcon it (even though I always though about it as a comet..) we really need something against these damn abolets...

-Anybody have any good ideas for powers the Star Pact would have (asides for the ones the article mentions)? I am trying to convert the 4e mechanics of Warlocks into 3e, and I'm needing ideas for this one, since it's not actually out yet.

Star pact warlocks are presented in the 4th ed PHB already. Their pact boon is getting a bonus to d20 rolls when an enemy cursed by them dies.

Not really its Orcus (honorary prince of Orca whales) the Tarrasque, Demogorgon, Larloch and elven chick in bikini (the Shrishne (sp?) )

The new article just provides more fluff & crunch... plus silly feats for tieflings
Not to say they want you to rp your warlock like that, it just gives you some more ideas.

Star Pact warlocks often get powers that do radiant/psychic dmg (and sometimes cold). Often times there are powers with a fear, teleportation, and can cause status effects/neg saves.

And I am pretty sure you noticed this, but they are very Con/Cha heavy with the spells (not purely Cha reliant for spells). Although sometimes Int gives a boost to effects of the power.

Don´t get this wrong but I would rally advise you to get the new PHB even if you don´t plan to play it any time soon. The advantages would be that you would understand more of what the talk about and what the FRPG will show, its a pretty book and looks great on any bookshelf, the ritual chapter is actually something you could pretty much steal for 3rd edition.
Maybe try to get a used one - enough people were ****** about it and said they would sell their books.

Well the far realms aspect is kinda built into the class - though you can ignore it with with you power choice a bit. I am reallllllly not into far realms and chutulu monsters, it doesn´t fit well with my vision of the realms. However the far realm is the only realm with picture in the FRCG - the picture really fits, now question there - but I realy can live without it.

I´d rather spend a week in hell than an hour in the far realm.

The power from the stars angle can still work without the far realm refference (even if it seems to be a big hellboy refferece), the Warlock from Rosekeep was quite sane.

-I don't see that at all. The original 3e Warlock was built on the assumption that the character in question had made a deal with a Demon/Devil (Don't remember which), but all of that was left to "fluff", so no matter what you said for your character, it didn't really matter mechanically.

Well I was talking about the 4th edition Star Pact Warlock and well

Star Pact
You have mastered the astrologer’s art, learning the
secret names of the stars and gazing into the Far
Realm beyond, gaining great power thereby. You can
call upon powers that madden or terrify your enemies,
manipulate chance and fate, or scour your foes with
icy banes and curses drawn from beyond the night sky.
Dire Radiance: You know the dire radiance at-will
spell.
Fate of the Void: You have the Fate of the Void
pact boon. Your curse intermingles with the lost vitality
of a cursed enemy to reveal a glimpse of the future
to you.

To be complete, a warlock has 3 choices for his pact boon, infernal pact (rogue devils trying to get away from Asmodeus or something), Fey pact(pact with a spirit from the realm of fey ) and of couse star pact and it goes from watching stars to :88E: :coolcthul
