| #1pint_glass_crusaderDec 29, 2008 12:55:21 | I was skimming through my FR books, looking for a reference to which region is known for Yuan Ti. I assume they are prolific in Kara-Tur. However, my next character will be a "snakeblooded human" (effecively just a human, but I have a nice miniature for him) and I wanted to use him in Living Realms, so I want him to be from one of the regions from the FR Player's Guide... I was thinking of Durpar due to the Monstrous Lineage background... but if there is another, more appropriate region...? |

The maps from that tome are available as a free download, and may be of some use to you. Hlondeth, download Vilhon Reach Which can be gotten for free from HERE. |
| #3thephilosopherkingDec 29, 2008 13:12:25 | Hlondeth, download Vilhon Reach |
| #4pint_glass_crusaderDec 29, 2008 15:00:45 | Hlondeth, download Vilhon Reach While Vilhon Reach is in the 4th Ed. Forgotten Realms, it no longer has any reference to Yuan Ti. It's pretty much all spellscarred now. Still, it might work, but Durpar is still top of the list with its Monstrous Lineage. |
| #5markustay63Dec 29, 2008 18:21:46 | Then why not just go and use Najara? ![]() It still exists in 4e, does it not? Pg. 158 of the 4e FRCG, Najara entry - Nagas, yuan-ti, and lizardfolk inhabit this monstrous realm. Najara encompasses the eastern reaches of the High Moor, the Serpent Hills, the Forest of Wyrms, the Marsh of Chelimber, and the river valleys that meander through the area. Emphasis mine. That seems all pretty spelled-out for you right there. |
| #6lord_karsusDec 29, 2008 18:52:59 | -Yuan-Ti Purebloods are close-enough to look Human that, in theory, they can be anywhere, as "advance agents" for the eventual Yuan-Ti invasion, or whatever. |
| #7suin_bahhar_02Dec 29, 2008 19:41:46 | Indeed. Be paranoid! Those 'ebil' snakes crawl under every rock... I'd hope the psionic books are released soon for 4e as that power source gives the Yuan-Ti the edge in most encounters. House Extaminaar -the almost pure human pureblood family in Hondleth- had some psionic knack aswell if I'm not mistaken. |
| #8lord_karsusDec 29, 2008 21:19:48 | -It's like the Skrull Invasion!! |
| #9markustay63Dec 30, 2008 1:23:33 | Remember when the human torch married that sexy Skrull chick? :D Anyhow, snakemen posing as humans goes was back to some of Robert Howard's early (pre-Conan) stuff - his 'Kull the Conqueror' series. It good pulp-stuff, if you like that sort of thing, and can still find it. Lots of great ideas in those old tales (along with Conan and others). The only thing I really dislike about the whole Yuan-ti thing is that purebloods look the least like snakes. It just seems like the terminology got screwed-up somewhere. Reminds me of the whole 'demi-lich' debacle. ![]() |
| #10old_sageDec 30, 2008 3:26:39 | -It's like the Skrull Invasion!! Hmmm... Secret Invasion in the Realms. This gives me an idea! :P |
| #11StiggerDec 30, 2008 5:52:20 | Can't say I've ever liked Yuan-Ti, or much of the other scaley breeds as presented in D&D... but I love snakes, used to keep them for pets, and simply abhor the 'evil snake' image most folk seem to have. Don't much care for Secret Invasion/Body Snatcher tropes either though. I'm definitely getting the impression I'm pretty far away from the tastes a lot of sci-fi fantasy stuff is aimed at of late... |
| #12rauricDec 30, 2008 7:44:26 | I liked using Yuan-Ti as leaders of cultists that could be placed in any city in FR. After their displacement from their cities perhaps they went to the monster city south of Amn to try their luck there. |
| #13suin_bahhar_02Dec 30, 2008 9:11:50 | So what happened to Mhairshaulk, the Jennestas Yuan-Ti Tribe ruled area in the Black Jungles east of Tlindleth and in Sammarach? Did the explosion of Halruua effect this realm? Mhaishaulk was probably hit full on by the Spellplague too. |
| #14lord_karsusDec 30, 2008 9:52:56 | The only thing I really dislike about the whole Yuan-ti thing is that purebloods look the least like snakes. The only thing that makes sense of it is that they are being described in terms of Humans, who looks the most like Humans, who doesn't... Hmmm... Secret Invasion in the Realms. This gives me an idea! :P -I know in my own setting, I have such an ongoing plotline concerning Yuan-Ti. Did the explosion of Halruua effect this realm? Mhaishaulk was probably hit full on by the Spellplague too. -Presumably. |
| #15markustay63Dec 30, 2008 12:28:06 | For my new project I'm working on (and am feeling more motivated then I have in awhile), I'm going to re-imagine the various scaley races (as others here have). I mentioned the Kull series, and in that there were a bunch of shape-shifting Lizardmen - I may take that and combine it with the Wercrocodiles under Sebek. If I were to use them in the Realms, then they would be based in that sunken city in the Adder Swamp, in Chessenta (which I'm wondering about now, with all the changes...)-Agreed. I never understood that either. The only thing that makes sense of it is that they are being described in terms of Humans, who looks the most like Humans, who doesn't... I've thought of that as well, but it's the Yuan-ti that use that terminology, which makes even less sense. Either group saying 'pureblood' in regards to a crossbreed is just weird to me. I'll be fixing that in my Homebrew, though. Lots of things in D&D can be fixed with a little work (even 4e FR, come to think of it). So what happened to Mhairshaulk, the Jennestas Yuan-Ti Tribe ruled area in the Black Jungles east of Tlindleth and in Sammarach? From what I understand from my one read-through of the FRCG - and it was more like a quick scan - the Mhairshaulk were mostly wiped out. Small groups could remain if the DM wishes it so, but their major holdings were destroyed and the survivors dispersed. The ones in Isstosseffifil appear to be gone, but there is no mention either-way. I don't know if the the new Empire of Shade wiped them out, or if the designers are just chosing to ignore the group at this time. Personally, I think a very powerful group of Liches living in the midst of Shade without them knowing is far more fun then just writing them off - especially considering the past history with the Terraseer (who manipulated the Netherease time and again). The ones down in Okoth seem to be doing better in 4e, much like Najara - they've become somewhat more open about their claims to the Lake of Salt and are rebuilding their Kingdom. Not that Scaley-Folk are my forte', nor is 4e itself, but I think that just about covers them, IIRC. |
| #16suin_bahhar_02Dec 30, 2008 14:03:10 | sssssssssnakessssssss ![]() Isstosseffifil'sss waysss were ssssneaky ssso having them hide out till the right moment to ssstrike isss fery likely. Keveras already statted the Terrasseer and most of the scaley folks upper echelon to drop onto the Shades so that might help. |
| #17lord_karsusDec 30, 2008 20:44:14 | Keveras already statted the Terrasseer and most of the scaley folks upper echelon to drop onto the Shades so that might help. -You mean, Keverassssssssssssssssssssssssssss. ;) |
| #18suin_bahhar_02Dec 30, 2008 20:57:03 | Yessss! Isss there not an upcoming adventure path planned involving Yuan-Ti? The sssnakesss need more ssspotlight. They make good mid to high level foesss and Yuan-Ti anathema's are tough BBEGsss too. |
| #19lord_karsusDec 30, 2008 20:59:12 | Yessss! -Don't know. I know there was one, though. Fort of the Yuan-Ti? Something like that. I was clicking around the WotC Art Galleries and noticed maps for it. |
| #20blackmasqueJan 05, 2009 0:17:25 | Fortress of the Yuan Ti. I have that one. It's okay. |
