Where to start for FR

Jul 02, 2008 20:46:26 Ok I am an Avid Dragonlance reader, and Ravenloft reader. I alos play both seetings in my own games at home with my group. If I wanted to start reading FR novels to get a feel for the world before FR 4e hits shelves what are some good places to start to give me a good up to date feel for the realms? Thanks a lot for the help, I have Never read a Forgotten Realms novel before.

Jul 02, 2008 20:50:27 Some good choices IMHO would be the Swords of Evenstar by Ed Greenwood, the Song & Sword books by Elaine Cunningham, the Icewind Dale books by RA Salvatore, The Cormyr books by Ed and Troy Denning

-Anyway, if you are intending to get a hang of the 4-Gotten Realms (The Forgotten Realms in the 4e era), you'd maybe be better off waiting a few weeks, until the FRCG is released. A lot of stuff is being shifted around, and being altered, destroyed, and so on. I'd personally be a little peeved if a series/book I read was totally gone in FRCG. Especially if I was just starting to get into the setting, as you said you are.

I'd recommend Swordmage by Rich Baker. That novel is on the front lines of the Forgotten Realms in the post-spellplague era and ought to give you a pretty good idea of what the Realms are like.

I got Swordmage in the mail earlier today. I'll comment on that later in the week.

I've read it and it kept me really intrigued, absorbed, and hooked for FR-4e. I like the idea of "changelands" and "earth motes" as well. From the read, it seems fun and exciting to play in the Realms again.

Good grief... "4gotten Realms" is just an abbreviation, it doesn't imply anything additional other than 4th edition, which it is. So it's not even a misrepresentative abbreviation. You're reading in "disrespect" because you personally like to fight with Karsus.

I really liked the Dragonlance and Ravenloft settings because i read all the novels so I am shooting for the same thing with Forgotten Realms. It seems really interesting. Thanks again!

Anyway, you might want to search around--there are many threads on this subject on this board. On Candlekeep.com, there is a stickied thread for book recommendations.
