| #1dravidiusJul 02, 2008 20:46:26 | Ok I am an Avid Dragonlance reader, and Ravenloft reader. I alos play both seetings in my own games at home with my group. If I wanted to start reading FR novels to get a feel for the world before FR 4e hits shelves what are some good places to start to give me a good up to date feel for the realms? Thanks a lot for the help, I have Never read a Forgotten Realms novel before. |
| #2merrikcaleJul 02, 2008 20:50:27 | Some good choices IMHO would be the Swords of Evenstar by Ed Greenwood, the Song & Sword books by Elaine Cunningham, the Icewind Dale books by RA Salvatore, The Cormyr books by Ed and Troy Denning |
| #3dravidiusJul 02, 2008 20:54:16 | ok I will look into those titles thanks a bunch! |
| #4merrikcaleJul 02, 2008 20:58:28 | Another idea would be to pick up a couple of the short story anthologies called "Realms of ". Lord Karsus will stop by any minute now and agree with that Anywho, I will link you to this page on CandleKeep http://www.candlekeep.com/index.html Hit the link for the Bookshelf Thats a bibliography, check it out and see what hits your fancy. The good thing about the Realsm is there is a lot so something should really hot your fancy |

Lord Karsus will stop by any minute now and agree with that -Thanks for stealing my idea...:P -Anyway, if you are intending to get a hang of the 4-Gotten Realms (The Forgotten Realms in the 4e era), you'd maybe be better off waiting a few weeks, until the FRCG is released. A lot of stuff is being shifted around, and being altered, destroyed, and so on. I'd personally be a little peeved if a series/book I read was totally gone in FRCG. Especially if I was just starting to get into the setting, as you said you are. |
| #6GreenKnightJul 02, 2008 21:26:35 | I got Swordmage in the mail earlier today. I'll comment on that later in the week. |
| #7Mr_MiscellanyJul 02, 2008 23:40:23 | -Anyway, if you are intending to get a hang of the 4-Gotten Realms (The Forgotten Realms in the 4e era), The correct terms are either "Forgotten Realms" or "4E Forgotten Realms", as neither term requires an explanation of what it means in paranthesis. Please use the correct terminology. ::::::::::::::::::::: Dravidius I'd recommend Swordmage by Rich Baker. That novel is on the front lines of the Forgotten Realms in the post-spellplague era and ought to give you a pretty good idea of what the Realms are like. |
| #8StiggerJul 02, 2008 23:53:12 | You realize he's only going to keep doing it, if only to spite you there Mr. Misc, right? ;) |
| #9Mr_MiscellanyJul 03, 2008 0:16:33 | Not if the WizO's get tired of me reporting it and ask him to stop in order to spare them the constant flood of messages. :P |
| #10StiggerJul 03, 2008 0:22:28 | Point. |
| #11merrikcaleJul 03, 2008 7:01:18 | I like it |
| #12ody_saraph_of_karsusJul 03, 2008 7:20:35 | Not if the WizO's get tired of me reporting it and ask him to stop in order to spare them the constant flood of messages. OR they might get mad at you for making false reportings ..... |
| #13DiffanJul 03, 2008 8:27:35 | I got Swordmage in the mail earlier today. I'll comment on that later in the week. I've read it and it kept me really intrigued, absorbed, and hooked for FR-4e. I like the idea of "changelands" and "earth motes" as well. From the read, it seems fun and exciting to play in the Realms again. |
| #14TheriseJul 03, 2008 9:38:04 | The correct terms are either "Forgotten Realms" or "4E Forgotten Realms", as neither term requires an explanation of what it means in paranthesis. Good grief... "4gotten Realms" is just an abbreviation, it doesn't imply anything additional other than 4th edition, which it is. So it's not even a misrepresentative abbreviation. You're reading in "disrespect" because you personally like to fight with Karsus. ![]() |
| #15lord_karsusJul 03, 2008 10:36:47 | OR they might get mad at you for making false reportings ..... -Indeed, they do. Many people have been admonished for abusing the report post button. |

| #17entombmentofamachineJul 03, 2008 10:42:16 | Not if the WizO's get tired of me reporting it and ask him to stop in order to spare them the constant flood of messages. Is this avatar stealer talking about me? I feel a flame rising in me...can't resist..kids gonna get swamped... |
| #18dravidiusJul 03, 2008 10:57:17 | I will pick up Swordmage tomorrow afternoon. Thanks for all the great suggestions. Kind of feel lost in the Forgotten Realms setting. The Last time I looked at it was AD&D box set. I imagine a lot has changed since then. I really liked the Dragonlance and Ravenloft settings because i read all the novels so I am shooting for the same thing with Forgotten Realms. It seems really interesting. Thanks again! |

The Last time I looked at it was AD&D box set. I imagine a lot has changed since then. The change between that and the 3e Realms is probably much much smaller than the difference between the 3e Realsm and the 4-Gotten Realms |
| #20lord_karsusJul 03, 2008 11:17:56 | Kind of feel lost in the Forgotten Realms setting. -Why, specifically? |
| #21merrikcaleJul 03, 2008 11:21:45 | -Why, specifically? he took a wrong turn at the Utter East |
| #22TheriseJul 03, 2008 11:51:02 | he took a wrong turn at the Utter East That's what happens when you take the right portal at Albuquerque. Should'a taken the left one. |
| #23rinonalyrna_fathomlinJul 03, 2008 13:08:29 | I always like to recommend Ed Greenwood's novels, like Spellfire. Elaine Cunningham's novels are well-liked, too. Anyway, you might want to search around--there are many threads on this subject on this board. On Candlekeep.com, there is a stickied thread for book recommendations. |
| #24dravidiusJul 05, 2008 10:30:36 | Ok I got the Swordmage and am just starting to read it. Thanks for again for all the advise to a newbie Realm explorer! |
| #25lord_karsusJul 05, 2008 10:39:08 | -Can you please elaborate on why you feel "Kind of feel lost in the Forgotten Realms setting."? |
| #26merrikcaleJul 06, 2008 21:56:08 | -Can you please elaborate on why you feel "Kind of feel lost in the Forgotten Realms setting."? he probably means that there is too much lore, but i'm just guessing |
| #27lord_karsusJul 06, 2008 23:27:49 | he probably means that there is too much lore, but i'm just guessing -Well, that's why I'm asking! Note that the OP mentioned that he's never actually opened a Forgotten Realms book before, though, which is why I'm wondering... |
