| #1danieldrsaDec 11, 2008 5:30:01 | I bought campaign guide but something very strange i found is there is no Drizzt references in the book. I must say i liked the 4th edition, but what happened to the good NPCs that we loved? Wheres Drizzt, Simbul, Storm Siverhand, and evil ones like Artemis Entrery? Why they did it? Im really sad with what ive got with campaign book |
| #2magmar2Dec 11, 2008 10:11:48 | I bought campaign guide but something very strange i found is there is no Drizzt references in the book. The question is R.A.Salvatore finished writing books that have Drizz't in them. If he is not, WotC would be stepping on his toes and possible be altering his vision of his characters and other writers characters. |
| #3pandexanderDec 11, 2008 12:21:12 | The question is R.A.Salvatore finished writing books that have Drizz't in them. If he is not, WotC would be stepping on his toes and possible be altering his vision of his characters and other writers characters. Salvatore is still writing about Drizzt (see the transition trilogy). |
| #4BilopTheFleshwarperDec 12, 2008 2:01:15 | He was great, had a big pit BBQ with some trolls. But here, a generic drow two weapon ranger. I hear he's an outcast of his society because he rebels against the evil matriarchal system that promotes backstabbing. He carries two scimitars and has a figurine that turns into a goat call "getoverhere".. *vomits up Drizzt clone* Blah... I hope he kills drizzt soon. I wanna see a new hero archtype, a dire flail wielding merchant prince training to be a wizard. |
| #5magmar2Dec 12, 2008 7:03:42 | He was great, had a big pit BBQ with some trolls. Try reading "Mistshore", by Jaleigh Johnson. I am half way through it, so far I am impressed with it. |
| #6pigknightDec 14, 2008 22:59:56 | Drizzt is now your average ordinary drow. All drow are G rangers striving to overthrow their chaotic evil brethren. |
| #7zeratulcraftDec 14, 2008 23:18:25 | Drizzt is now your average ordinary drow. All drow are G rangers striving to overthrow their chaotic evil brethren. "But didn't you just say they're all G?" /oots |
| #8Lord_VentnorDec 15, 2008 4:23:43 | From what I understand, most of the "uber NPCs" were killed off in the 100-year interim period between the 3E and 4E Realms. |
| #9lord_karsusDec 15, 2008 11:28:05 | -Drizzt is a Ranger in the north, fighting in support of the Kingdom of Many-Arrows, against Human/Elven bigots, when last we saw him, in The Orc King. |
| #10GMforPowergamersDec 15, 2008 12:10:56 | -Drizzt is a Ranger in the north, fighting in support of the Kingdom of Many-Arrows, against Human/Elven bigots, when last we saw him, in The Orc King. he is in his novel series...far from my games...living or otherwise... ![]() PS now that I said that I am going to get a living mod with him init...then my brain will explode... |
| #11zeratulcraftDec 15, 2008 14:42:16 | he is in his novel series...far from my games...living or otherwise... Just think, you can kill him if he's got stats! |
| #12lord_karsusDec 15, 2008 15:31:49 | -Drizzt has plot armor. |
| #13sirflinnDec 15, 2008 15:36:52 | What I don't understand, I've only read one Drizzt book, is Drizz generic or is everyone else generic now and he's the original dark elf dual wielding ranger? Because if he's the original, it's kind of like calling Tolkein generic. |
| #14lord_karsusDec 15, 2008 15:43:33 | -Drizzt is the "spark" that set off the "craze" of CG Drow Rangers wielding two scimitars, yes. |
| #15akumadaimyoDec 15, 2008 15:44:04 | Drizzt actually is still around and in new books. Now he's dealing with Pirates in Luskan. I saw this huge hardback book. Jarlaxle is in the FR book though. Good to see at least one REAL drow is around. I like the Lady Penitent series a lot more and the books before it that lead up to it. Those were very cool drow. Eberron drow are also pretty cool too. |
| #16pigknightDec 15, 2008 15:52:38 | I had Drizzt make a cameo in my campain...he was instantly eaten by a giant piggy. |
| #17MarcelusDragonsbaneDec 15, 2008 21:15:18 | Yeah, how dare people play a dark elf ranger with two scimitars. Please also never play: A half elven ranger with a bow A brooding mage with a thirst for power and a twin brother The twin who is the dumb one but strong as an ox. A knight with a greatsword An eladrin female warlord with a spear A human ranger with an epic destiny to lead men An elven ranger who uses both bow AND two scimitars A dwarf with a two handed axe whos loveable yet gruff with his elf friend. An old dwarf with a heart condition A fat rogue who happens to be a good guy. A human mage with a staff and a hidden agenda A halfling rogue with a childlike demeanor always getting himself into trouble and cares for his friends A human mage/fighter who happens to be the reincarnation of another man. A human warlord who doesn't wear bulky armor, uses a pole arm, and is a scoundrel A human ranger/warlord with a one handed axe who has wolf animal companions and who originally just wanted to be a blacksmith A halfling with a ring A halfling who's friend has a ring A halfling who found a ring An old wizard who has a snarky sense of humor yet everyone respects him A human barbarian with a maul A dwarven warrior with an axe and only one horn left on his helm An effeminate vampire who tries so hard not to eat humans and is in love with a mortal A half vampire who slays the undead....with a katana A warforged from a different time period A human barbarian with a sword who lovingly protects his wife The wife, a human female cleric trying to spread the word of the true gods. An older human bard who juggles, tumbles, and plays the harp and flute, yet is involved in political intrigue A samauri who refuses to kill anymore and uses a subdual katana Please. Only original ideas. Anything less than the best is a felony. Oh. Don't play a washed up human bard who is trying out "gangsta" ballads to gain the commonfolks approval. |
| #18MusicOfCreationDec 15, 2008 21:32:09 | Yeah, how dare people play a dark elf ranger with two scimitars. There is a difference between using another character from stories/fantasy as the basis for your character and making a complete clone of a famous character who has already been cloned to death. D&D isn't the only game that is plagued by Drizzt clones. |
| #19MarcelusDragonsbaneDec 15, 2008 21:37:17 | I don't think there is a difference. I think they all begin as clones and over time, they just become archetypes. The bow wielding elven ranger had to come from somewhere. |
| #20MusicOfCreationDec 15, 2008 21:43:49 | Yes some people clone Frodo, Aragorn, Raistlin, Blade, etc... Drizzt is another story. He is cloned so much that even the OoTS comic made a joke about it when the OoTS met the Linear Guild. Pigknight and Zeratulcraft actually referenced it in earlier posts in this thread. |
| #21SavevsDeathDec 15, 2008 21:45:53 | I don't think there is a difference. I think they all begin as clones and over time, they just become archetypes. The bow wielding elven ranger had to come from somewhere. This. I like Drizzt, i grew up reading Drizzt, as a young and extremely nerdy black man from detroit who was not expected to do uncool things like play RPG's and listen to rock music i identified with Drizzt. Drizzt was MY iconic action hero, and on top of that i don't think he was a badly-written, ill-conceived character. Hes become the originator of an archtype to me, and i happily admit that i've taken the concept with other characters and used it for my own enjoyment and storytelling purposes. The same goes for Goku, Frodo Baggins (who i totally can sympathize with), Spider-Man, Naruto, and Cloud Strife. So leave my favorite characters alone. just because you hate them is no reason to make their entire archtype 'cliche' or 'too lame for serious players', or to ridicule someone who enjoys playing them. Oh yeah, i almost forgot: Alucard (Symphony of the Night Alucard). Alucard rocks. |
| #22MarcelusDragonsbaneDec 15, 2008 21:52:18 | Oh, well, if OOtS said something about it, hot diggity dang. I forgot that the Giant's word is to be taken as a basis for all pop culture decision making. I have a feeling, though, that if 3.5 D&D had existed, say, in the early 80's , and OOtS, we'd be seeing a lot of characters being made fun of. With Driz'zt, he was the first original character created in a long time. Sure, people starting hopping on that train in abundance, but given the circumstances, if the Giant had made the joke about any of the previously made characters, it would have been a dated joke, gotten only by a select few in an already relatively small group. As a comic writer, i dont think he would have wanted to do that. BTW, The Simbul is in the dalelands now caring for Elminster. To answer one of the questions |
| #23lord_karsusDec 15, 2008 21:55:30 | -Drizzt. No apostrophe. |
| #24MarcelusDragonsbaneDec 15, 2008 22:05:15 | Semantics, but I'll concede. I could have sworn something about his name was spelled all funky originally and then was later changed as the series progressed. |
| #25lord_karsusDec 15, 2008 22:17:50 | -His surname has an apostrophe, in "Do'Urden", as does his formal surname, "N'a'shezbaernon", but no apostrophes in his first name. I'm a stickler on that and correct everyone. The "a'postrophe in ev'erythin'g" thing drives me nuts. ;) |
| #26akumadaimyoDec 15, 2008 22:45:15 | Drizzt is still cloned far too often. Why not make your own, far more original concept for a good drow? I found Drizzt interesting originally, but now I'm bored of him. It doesn't seem to me that he's changing much anymore. Let him die or ride off into the sunset already. It's pathetic to see them trying to get more cash out of him. |
| #27kyros_tachyusDec 15, 2008 22:52:47 | Yeah, how dare people play a dark elf ranger with two scimitars. Omg... I laughed at this so hard as I read it. Its going in my sig. |
| #28MarcelusDragonsbaneDec 15, 2008 22:54:37 | Plus, if you're worried about drizzt clones, wait till the druid comes out. I wonder how many green bearded dwarves screaming oi oi we're gonna have running around. And maul fighting barbarians. I think we may have a surge of supporting cast "clones" |
| #29magmar2Dec 16, 2008 10:21:39 | Omg... I laughed at this so hard as I read it. You and me both. |
| #30althor_enchantorDec 16, 2008 11:43:16 | Drizzt is still cloned far too often. Why not make your own, far more original concept for a good drow? Charles Middlebrook, a Drow Bard, was sent to infiltrate a surface community using his knack for magical disguise. Obviously Charles isn't his real name, but it was a human community, and something about a name with three Z's, four R's, and seven apostrophes made humans suspicious, hence the pseudonym. The intent was for Charles to scout the place out, spot the weaknesses in their defenses, and maybe perform a bit of sabotage if he saw an opportunity. Sow discord, upset the order of things, turn people against their neighbors, and otherwise soften them up for his house to raid them for slaves, territory, and delicious cattle. Unfortunately, as is often the case with the brutal nature of Drow politics, there was a "regime change" involving the leader of his house, a traitorous lieutenant, and roughly twice the leader's body weight in Monstrous Scorpion Venom applied directly to the small of his back. By multiple crossbow bolts. Record of Charles's little mission had been lost in the shuffle. Essentially stranded deep in enemy territory, he went native. "Went Native" here meaning that instead of acting like a Drow, he acts like a Bard. Surprisingly enough, when done well, there is very little difference between the two. |
| #31rinonalyrna_fathomlinDec 22, 2008 18:45:47 | There is a difference between using another character from stories/fantasy as the basis for your character and making a complete clone of a famous character who has already been cloned to death. D&D isn't the only game that is plagued by Drizzt clones. It's sad, though, when any surface-dwelling good/neutral drow gets pegged as a "Drizzt Clone". |
| #32The_Simbul_of_AglarondDec 24, 2008 22:55:20 | I bought campaign guide but something very strange i found is there is no Drizzt references in the book. The Campaign Guide is primarily intended to be a resource for creating a D&D Campaign set in the Forgotten Realms. The majority of the information contained therein is intended to be a creative starting point for a Dungeon Master to create their campaign within the setting, rather than a compendium of persons of past and present. The bulk of the focus is prioritized on on information critical to adventurers and adventuring (points of light, adventure sites, adventure seeds, enemies and threats, treasure, etc). The fate of individuals who once ruled realms or wielded great power are occasionally mentioned, as history would hold them first in prominence. Likewise, individuals who rule realms today, who threaten the world, or who can serve as allies or patrons to the PCs are mentioned as well. However the ambiguity of information regarding persons of the past and the present is intentional--not only to prevent the book from being overburdened with information of limited use, but also to enable DMs to fill in those ambiguities with their own vision of the realms. To be clear, ambiguity on the fate of individual NPCs is a good thing for DMs and players who liked many of the prominent individuals of the past, because it allows them to find ways to bring them into the backdrop of their campaign, or to leave legacies behind for the PCs or their enemies to seek out or exploit. As for the specific individuals you named and their circumstances in the Year of the Ageless Ones (1479 DR), much of that information can be gleaned from the Campaign Setting, recent novels, or other forms of lore. Beyond that it is up to the DM to decide the fate of an individual NPC. Drizzt Do’Urden is still alive and well. Much of the information on him can be found in the prologue of the novel The Orc King. Further lore pertaining to Drizzt, his history, deeds, allies, enemies, and others can be found in the Reader’s Guide to the Legend of Drizzt. Given the substantial abundance of lore and fiction devoted to him, the Campaign Guide did not really need to elaborate further on him. He is noted in the history of the Kingdom of Many Arrows, regarding his battle with the original King Obould. The truth of the Simbul’s fate is detailed in the Campaign Guide. Meanwhile common rumors, hints, and folk-beliefs on what became of her are covered in the Player’s Guide, since discovering the truth about her fate is one of the motivations for characters from Aglarond. In addition, wizard characters who wish to follow in her example can learn many of the spells and powers she wielded by taking the Simbarch of Aglarond paragon path, and arcane characters of any class can master a healing ritual of her devising in the same book. Storm Silverhand is mentioned in the Dalelands section under Shadowdale, and only so far as to say that the dale is still strong even in the absence of protectors of old such as she. The precise details of her absence, and what has caused it, are entirely up to the DM to determine. Given the way the authors handled the fate of many of the other Seven Sisters, perhaps it is better left to the DM to determine the details her fate or her role in the new era of Faerûn. As far as Artemis Entreri is concerned, it has largely been left up to R.A. Salvatore to reveal the rest of his tale, or simply leave his fate to the obscurity of history. |
| #33Kobold_AvengerDec 26, 2008 15:38:50 | Artenis was probably died of old age. I mean 100 hundred years is a long time for a human. |
| #34lord_karsusDec 26, 2008 15:53:58 | Artenis was probably died of old age. I mean 100 hundred years is a long time for a human. -As established in R.A. Salvatore's short story in Realms of Shadow, "That Curious Sword", Artemis Entreri is no longer 100% Human. |
| #35the_king_in_yellowDec 28, 2008 8:25:40 | -As established in R.A. Salvatore's short story in Realms of Shadow, "That Curious Sword", Artemis Entreri is no longer 100% Human. Which totally reeks of the next big trend syndrome, ooohh I know, my mary sue will now be a shade. |
| #36the_shamanDec 28, 2008 8:47:35 | "Went Native" here meaning that instead of acting like a Drow, he acts like a Bard. Surprisingly enough, when done well, there is very little difference between the two. Your bards are power-hungry megalomaniacs with no moral values whatsoever who happily abuse/murder anyone if they are irked with them/can get something out of it and can get away with it? Nice. Not saying all my drow are like that, but that's what I consider the "typical" drow NPCs to be like. Then again, few adventurers are known for their scruples, so you may actually have a point ;) |
| #37Kobold_AvengerDec 28, 2008 15:41:46 | -As established in R.A. Salvatore's short story in Realms of Shadow, "That Curious Sword", Artemis Entreri is no longer 100% Human. I hadn't tread that one... Hmm.. then we if probably still alive. |
| #38lord_karsusDec 29, 2008 9:54:35 | Which totally reeks of the next big trend syndrome, ooohh I know, my mary sue will now be a shade. -Whatever you say. I hadn't tread that one... Hmm.. then we if probably still alive. -One of it's effects was Entreri feeling rejuvenated in his old age, so it has likely expanded his lifespan some. |
| #39rinonalyrna_fathomlinDec 30, 2008 14:25:34 | Your bards are power-hungry megalomaniacs with no moral values whatsoever who happily abuse/murder anyone if they are irked with them/can get something out of it and can get away with it? Nice. I was rather puzzled by the "bards are like drow" comment, myself. |
| #40StiggerDec 31, 2008 17:16:52 | Well, they both have a D and an R in their spellings... umm... yeah, all I can think of. |
| #41GreenKnightJan 01, 2009 16:35:20 | Ok, so who're all these people? I can guess a few, but the rest? A half elven ranger with a bow Tanis Half-Elven. A brooding mage with a thirst for power and a twin brother Raistlin. The twin who is the dumb one but strong as an ox. Caramon. A knight with a greatsword Sturm Brightblade. An eladrin female warlord with a spear Laurana. A human ranger with an epic destiny to lead men Aragorn. An elven ranger who uses both bow AND two scimitars ? A dwarf with a two handed axe whos loveable yet gruff with his elf friend. Gimli. An old dwarf with a heart condition ? A fat rogue who happens to be a good guy. ? A human mage with a staff and a hidden agenda I'd guess, but I could list 20 different names and still be right. A halfling rogue with a childlike demeanor always getting himself into trouble and cares for his friends ? A human mage/fighter who happens to be the reincarnation of another man. ? A human warlord who doesn't wear bulky armor, uses a pole arm, and is a scoundrel ? A human ranger/warlord with a one handed axe who has wolf animal companions and who originally just wanted to be a blacksmith ? A halfling with a ring Frodo. A halfling who's friend has a ring Samwise. A halfling who found a ring Bilbo. An old wizard who has a snarky sense of humor yet everyone respects him Again? Didn't this one already pop up? :P A human barbarian with a maul Wulfgar? A dwarven warrior with an axe and only one horn left on his helm I just know it's that Dragonlance dwarf. An effeminate vampire who tries so hard not to eat humans and is in love with a mortal Crap, we're in swing a dead cat territory again. Jander Sunstar? A half vampire who slays the undead....with a katana D. A warforged from a different time period No clue. A human barbarian with a sword who lovingly protects his wife Riverwind? The wife, a human female cleric trying to spread the word of the true gods. Goldmoon. An older human bard who juggles, tumbles, and plays the harp and flute, yet is involved in political intrigue No idea. A samauri who refuses to kill anymore and uses a subdual katana ? So did I get any wrong? And who're the rest? |
| #42mwrosserJan 03, 2009 17:21:36 | Shouldn't cattie brie and wulfgar be dead? Considering the time line has advanced 100 years... Can someone confirm or at least explain what has happened to them? |
| #43rinonalyrna_fathomlinJan 03, 2009 19:38:08 | Shouldn't cattie brie and wulfgar be dead? Considering the time line has advanced 100 years... I don't think anything's been explicitly stated about them yet. |
| #44lord_karsusJan 03, 2009 22:46:45 | Shouldn't cattie brie and wulfgar be dead? Considering the time line has advanced 100 years... -In theory, yes. But, we shall see, since nothing stating that they are dead has been written. As evidenced by plenty of examples in Sci-Fi/Fantasy, "Unless the body is present..." |
| #45VatrasJan 10, 2009 20:44:33 | I hope he is dead, buried, and forgotten together with the other badly written characters who have become clichee... I'm going to scream if I ever see another PC drow ranger with the same lame backgroundstory ![]() |
| #46akumadaimyoJan 10, 2009 21:40:25 | I like Jarlaxle. He is the man and gets all the chicks. :D |
| #47markustay63Jan 11, 2009 0:39:56 | All of RAS's pet characters accidently 'drink' some Shade juice and are alive and well and living in Argentina (as the old joke goes). Gawd... I hope ALL of his ridiculous dwarves are dead. What a bunch of clowns... ![]() |
| #48the_shamanJan 12, 2009 7:48:12 | A samurai who refuses to kill anymore and uses a subdual katana That is Kenshin from the Rurouni Kenshin manga/anime series, though I don't think he was ever a samurai in terms of his social class. One of my favourite series, that - even though the anime was dumbed down. |
| #49squidyakJan 12, 2009 9:32:57 | This. The rest? IDK. |
| #51lord_karsusJan 12, 2009 12:26:47 | Gawd... I hope ALL of his ridiculous dwarves are dead. What a bunch of clowns... -Too many of them, unfortunately, are hard to take seriously. |
| #52ravenharmJan 12, 2009 20:11:49 | Yeah, how dare people play a dark elf ranger with two scimitars. you are my hero. i've been saying for years the hate that drizzt and elminster was unfounded at best. real people who thought through characters should like what they like and not be biased against somthing based on its popularity. i have a friend who tends to base if he likes somthing on if it popular or not. i swear somtimes i think he would like staples through the soles of his feet if he thought that might be somthing he read as least popular. |
| #53rinonalyrna_fathomlinJan 13, 2009 12:56:00 | you are my hero. Sometimes people hate characters just as they love other characters. It's an emotional reaction and doesn't have to be founded on anything. |
| #54ravenharmJan 13, 2009 14:07:09 | agreed and understood fathomlin :D just a personal irk, l guess. in my personal life im surrounded by friends who based their likes and dislikes on the popularity or lack of populatiry some things have. not facts. not prior knowledge. and no solid reasoning. i guess its unrealistic of me to hope people look beyond first impressions and book covers. ;) |
| #55answerquestionpleaseFeb 10, 2009 13:17:46 | Flint Fireforge. The Warrior/Mage one is probably Rand Al'Thor. |
| #56crossroads_wandererFeb 10, 2009 15:26:53 | A fat rogue who happens to be a good guy. I thought of Friar Tuck when I saw this one. ![]() |
| #57kaelenselunelFeb 10, 2009 17:29:32 | It's sad, though, when any surface-dwelling good/neutral drow gets pegged as a "Drizzt Clone". I've been accused of that myself...even though my character was a surface-born Eilistraeean drow trained as a bladesinger. I seriously wasn't sure if the other guy even knew what he was talking about. >_> |
| #58drizztsmanchildFeb 10, 2009 21:17:04 | Yaaay. A Drizzt thread is back on the front page ![]() |
| #59lord_karsusFeb 10, 2009 22:03:17 | I've been accused of that myself...even though my character was a surface-born Eilistraeean drow trained as a bladesinger. I seriously wasn't sure if the other guy even knew what he was talking about. >_> -Drizzt Clone! |
| #60kaelenselunelFeb 11, 2009 4:14:57 | lol! Nice, LK. Still, I gotta admit, I was caught off guard by the accusation the first time I heard it. These days, if someone brings it up I just shrug it off, since it's kind of silly to compare a dual scimitar-wielding drow ranger with a panther to a surface-raised bladesinger who travels with his moon elven mentor :P Plus, you know...the hugely different backstories. >_> |
| #61drizztsmanchildFeb 12, 2009 2:37:00 | half-vampire who kills undead with a katana. Blade. |
| #62drizztsmanchildFeb 12, 2009 2:56:11 | Yeah, how dare people play a dark elf ranger with two scimitars. ![]() |
| #63JudgeDookieFeb 12, 2009 18:49:00 | I agree with Drizztmanthingy. |
| #64the_shamanFeb 13, 2009 4:24:06 | half-vampire who kills undead with a katana. Blade. Every freaking half-vampire that kills vampires has some exotic bladed implement. It must be some kind of a badge of office. But yeah, they should have specified the length of the katana. D can rival Sephie-thing in that. Must be compensating for something ;) Anyway, I haven't seen a drizzt clone yet, but his influence on rangers is undeniable. It used to be drow who were associated with dual-wielding, rangers were associated somewhat with the bow, but that was it. The guy who taught Drizzt what it means to be a ranger found the two long blades style almost unbelievable. |
| #65drizztsmanchildFeb 13, 2009 4:43:08 | When you break it down almost all of RAS 's pure fighters are duel wielders |
| #66lord_karsusFeb 13, 2009 11:01:12 | When you break it down almost all of RAS 's pure fighters are duel wielders -Very true. If you take the "Defenders of the Hall", Cattie-Brie is the only non-fighter type, and that's only recently. Bruenor? Fighter type Wulfgar? Fighter type Drizzt? Fighter type Regis? Fighter type (to a degree) Cattie-Brie? Fighter type turned Magician type |
| #67drizztsmanchildFeb 13, 2009 11:10:06 | -Very true. If you take the "Defenders of the Hall", Cattie-Brie is the only non-fighter type, and that's only recently. Lol. I actually meant dual weapon users. But still nice to accidently make a good point. ![]() ![]() |
| #68rinonalyrna_fathomlinFeb 13, 2009 12:02:47 | I thought Regis was of the thief class (now "rogue" class). Even in the books he was never much of a warrior. |
| #69lord_karsusFeb 13, 2009 15:50:34 | -He very rarely does any Rogue-type things, with is why I put that little asterisk with him. Most of the time, Regis either hides, cowers, or "tries" to fight. When he fights, he usually has a little mace, and does very little "sneak attacking" or similar Rogue-ish things. |
| #70StiggerFeb 13, 2009 15:51:04 | Was as far as I know... hence the whole thieves guild thing in Calimshan. @LK, I think you're mistaking general cowardice with lack of ability... :D |
| #71lord_karsusFeb 13, 2009 15:58:11 | @LK, I think you're mistaking general cowardice with lack of ability... :D -I would think that ability would make up for any general cowardice... |
| #72StiggerFeb 13, 2009 16:08:18 | Sure, if he actually stuck around to fight instead of hiding while the others did the heavy lifting... he was perfectly capable when he had to be, he just chose not to indulge in fighting more often than not. |
| #73rinonalyrna_fathomlinFeb 13, 2009 17:46:35 | My opinion on Regis is that he's the type who's more comfortable in social situations and politics than he ever was as an adventurer (though he must have some stern stuff in him, to have survived his early life--and later ordeals--in Calimshan). He has abilities, just not the type of abilities that are well suited to combat.![]() |
| #74drizztsmanchildFeb 13, 2009 19:34:39 | He's actually changed quite a bit after his near death exp in "silent blade". Still doesn't go toe to toe with fighing anyone but he doesn't run and hide anymore but does his best to help out in battles and rarely uses the "pendant" either. LK is right he is now more of a "fighter/rogue". |
| #75lord_karsusFeb 13, 2009 20:25:00 | -All in all, it translates to him basically hitting things with his mace (when he isn't hiding) when combat breaks out. That makes him a Fighter-type. If he regularly snuck up on things and hit them with his mace, he'd be doing the Rogue-type thing. |
| #76drizztsmanchildFeb 17, 2009 1:52:22 | Wow. I just found out what the "Ghost King" is about based on the brief description that is on Amazon. It has the Spellplague happening and Drizzt and his friends are teaming up with Cadderly to deal with the changes and a long thought destroyed artifact makes it's appearance again. Hopefully it ties up loose ends or sets up future novels. THIS SHOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED A SPOILER AS ANYONE CAN GO TO AMAZON.COM TYPE IN "GHOST KING" AND READ THE DESCRIPTION OF THE BOOK WHICH IS THE SAME AS GOING TO THE STORE AND READING THE BACK OF THE NOVEL AND POSTING IT HERE. This is good news:invasion: |
| #77JohnLynchFeb 17, 2009 4:10:33 | Charles Middlebrook, a Drow Bard, was sent to infiltrate a surface community using his knack for magical disguise. Obviously Charles isn't his real name, but it was a human community, and something about a name with three Z's, four R's, and seven apostrophes made humans suspicious, hence the pseudonym. I'd thought of a very similar character myself. Clearly we can't have both our characters, and therefore one of us has to change. I suggest a duel. While Drizzt is a pet-peeve of mine*, I say live and let live. Your bards are power-hungry megalomaniacs with no moral values whatsoever who happily abuse/murder anyone if they are irked with them/can get something out of it and can get away with it? Nice. Isn't everyone's? :P I think this post just inspired me to take some of my old characters from Armageddon. It'll be difficult due to the nature of D&D, but I think I could adapt a few ![]() It's sad, though, when any surface-dwelling good/neutral drow gets pegged as a "Drizzt Clone". While a surface-dwelling good/neutral drow isn't necessarily a Drizzt clone. If he's a ranger who dual-wields scimitars, that's pretty blatant. Although you can have a non-Drizzt neutral drow who dual-wields scimitars, but chances are, it is a clone. * I come from a game called Armageddon where we were encouraged to create "evil" characters. If drow were in this game, Drizzt would be against the rules, with plenty of players would having evil drow instead. Having adopted this philosophy for years, Drizzt annoys me. |

Hopefully it ties up loose ends or sets up future novels. I have to admit, the amazon description of the book made me laugh. ![]() As of now I haven't decided if I even want to read TPK or TGK. The people who seemed to have enjoyed TPK kept mentioning that it's about Drizzt being ineffectual. You know, I'll criticize the Drizzt novels as much as the next person, but all in all I'd rather read a "fun romp with Drizzt and friends" than a book about Drizzt being unwilling/unable to do anything (which, I repeat, is what people who liked this book seem to be praising it for). |
| #81drizztsmanchildFeb 17, 2009 21:18:48 | I have to admit, the amazon description of the book made me laugh. Well then "TPK" prob won't be a good novel for you then;) but there is fighting and and as you said quite a few people were complaining that Drizzt never changes but to me every Drizzt book will be readable ;) |

The first source has Drizzt mentioning "the greatest cathedral" he had ever seen (The Spirit Soaring) being messed up, and the second mentions the Spirit Soaring being empty and haunted by ghosts of some kind. So, when you put two and two together... And you end up with 4e. You are really good at math ;). Still it was good to actually read that it was actually about that instead of speculating. I mean RAS could have had the novel focus more on Gauntylgrym and the "Ghost King" being involved in that city then have a seperate triology involving the changes of Cadderly Bonaduce (Danny's sane brother) and the SS. |
| #84rinonalyrna_fathomlinFeb 17, 2009 23:59:02 | Well then "TPK" prob won't be a good novel for you then;) ... Yes, I have the feeling it won't be, so I may well never read it. Of course, TOK wasn't really for me either. And I wasn't too fond of the Hunter's Blades Trilogy... |
| #85drizztsmanchildFeb 18, 2009 0:30:10 | Yes, I have the feeling it won't be, so I may well never read it. Well if that hasn't stopped you before . Since you did read the other novels I have a feeling that when the spirit moves you then you'll end up taking another chance a read it. ;) |
| #86darksideavatarFeb 18, 2009 4:02:17 | Bah, like it matters. The Lady Penitant books made it very clear that all Drow are evil and there's no way around it. If you turned into a Dark elf (Have brown skin and black hair) then you aren't evil. No self determining destiny anymore. If you are born to an evil race, you are evil. That's it. So in the orc King when it talks about Drizzt having white hair and black skin and killing humans and elves in his apparent service to the orcs, it just shows that he is indeed evil as the Lady Penitant book said he should be. Right???!! I mean, they'd never write a horribly craptastic book that might hinder one of their sacred cows... Right?! Or if they did, they could just ignore it...not like anyone will catch the mix up of facts or anything... P.S. Sorry, just couldnt resist taking my jab at those horrible LP books and how much they screwed things up. |
