He doesn't like that a certain deity has a certain portfolio, so he wants to find a thief who can steal that portfolio away from him. Because he (thinks he) is good aligned, he doesn't want to associate with an evil person, or someone who would untrustworthy and betray him.
I've got a few options here. 1) Tell him that Ao vets every deification and ordination of portfolios, and should take it up with him 2) Tell him he can take that portfolio from the Deity himself, by force or trickery 3) Give him a fake identity, as an ambush from his worst enemy (Artemeis Entreri) 4) Tell him that there is no such individual that fits all those requirements.
But! I do want to know if there is, or was, such an individual that could conceivably be a great enough thief to steal away a portfolio from a deity. It needn't be a class thief, or even good or trustworthy; any kind of individual (mortal or outsider) who could do it, so that I can at least point him that way. |

As to the greatest mortal thief... that's a highly debatable question really. Artemis I would say wasn't even in the top 10%, as he was more of an assassin who eschewed a lot of the sneaky stuff, though his buddy Jarlaxle would almost certainly be in that top echelon, but keep in mind I tend to go more off of lore and description rather than game stats, so Entreri may well be up there mechanically speaking, though 3e had him multiclassed as a fighter/rogue/assassin PrC, a definition I would definitely agree with. The biggest problem though is that the best thieves are the ones no one's ever actually seen, and possibly even heard of. I tend to think that if you've heard of them in more than a whisper or rumor, then they probably aren't that great. |
