Maybe its been posted some where before but I must of missed it. When Mystra died who took her portfolio?

By the way how did she die? I read the Thay series but they didn't go in to detail about her demise. At least not that I got out of it.

They haven't announced it yet but judging by the circumstances in core and the new importance of the Feywild I'm guessing its Corellon.

So are they saying Corellon just took over the power and responsibility or did Corellon kill/destroy Mystra?

No, Cyric (and Shar) killed Mystra. There is no real evidence about who the new god of magic is, I'm just guessing Corellon because he's the new god of magic in core and WoTC's recent trend shows a tendency to adapt events in core into FR. Its speculation and nothing more.

Sfdragon: There already is a core deity in Baator as of 4e if you haven't forgotten;) .

So if Cyric and Shar killed her why wouldn't they get the portfolio? Dont you get anything for killing a god anymore?

If I did all the work of planning and killing one of the most powerful deities in the Pantheons I wouldn't just hand off the power to someone who seems more suitable for it.

Cyric was the one who actually commited the murder so only he would get the right, and he got imprisoned on his home plane for 1000 years as punishment for setting off the Spellplague. Apparently there are a lot of special rules around the goddess of magic position that make it a special case. Maybe it can only be passed on, not obtained.

Who knows, there may be no god that controls all magic in 4e because the position is too unstable.

I see, where did you read or hear about all of this? I would really like to read that book. Does the imprisonment of Cyric affect his faithful at all? I've been waiting for quite awhile for the sequel of the Gosimar plane to come out did they postpone that due to Cyrics imprisonment?

The Grand History of the Realms.

Does the imprisonment of Cyric affect his faithful at all?

Nope. He's just locked up in The Supreme Throne (his godly domain, not the actual throne), and can't leave it.

Cyric was not allowed to become the new god of magic, since his name would have had to change to Myster, and thats just silly. :P

While Corellon may have the portfolio of magic, he is not the god of the weave, and will not have the power to cut people off from their magic. As of the destruction of the weave, no one may claim that level of power.

Yep, that's what I was thinking too. Corellon may have become the primary god of magic in the Faerunian Pantheon (which is probably the only pantheon left in existance... ), he dosen't control the reality of magic since he has no conduit from which he can modulate it like Mystra did.

Indeed

Which makes me wonder, who is going to have control over magic on the Shadowfell side?

Nah, I have a feeling Shar's gonna stay low over the new century due to her part in the Spellweave and the waxing power of her sister Selune.

I was thinking Kelemvor, since he is the God of the Dead, but I would love to see Myrkul brought back for that purpose.

There are at least several gods I would like to see return, but the current trend is to lay off gods. A pity, that moander awaiting a divine spark adverture hook in powers of faerun had such potential.

Well, they are only laying off "minor" gods, which Myrkul certainly was not. They are all just exarchs and minions to the more "important" gods now. So there is still a chance...

Yeah, all the gods in Dragonlance remind me of anime characters, emotional and easily manipulated. It woudn't be hard for a kawaii lil' girl to steal their hearts.

Lord Karsus doesn't need a deific portfolio, he has all of them. See, Lord Karsus never really died. It was all a coverup for his ascension to overdeity. Ao was the only being withthe capacity to truly apreciate Lord Karsus's greatness. He willingly merged himself with LK in order to become a more perfect being.

-G-d, no. The deity of magic in the Faerûnian pantheon doesn't have a particularly good track record. Been there, done that, and I don't want any part of it.

Ao was the only being withthe capacity to truly apreciate Lord Karsus's greatness. He willingly merged himself with LK in order to become a more perfect being.

Yep, I can see LK's brainwashing campaign has paid off pretty well. Poor, poor souls...

Yet it is my obligation as a Hand of Karsus to continue to propagate the rum-I mean undeniable fact that Karsus is the absolute master of reality that has always been and always will, amen.:D

True enough. The deity of magic tends to bite the dust every edition or so. You would probably be a goner by the 5th edition. 6th at the latest

-Maybe I wanted to allow it, because I knew Rin would like it?

-Maybe I allowed the Spellplague to happen, so that everyone would come to realize how much they liked the Forgotten Realms?

-Why does G-d allow evil? An age old question.

Now the core rules state:
Corellon is the patron of arcane magic and the fey. He seeded the world with arcane magic and planted the most ancient forests.

Of course this does not have to be so in the Realms, it may be someone like Selune.
So, if there is a patron of Arcane magic and Divine magic is provided by the respective Deities, would Shar be the patron of Shadow magic? Would there be a Primal magic patron?
Questions, questions...
