| #1TheriseMay 26, 2008 7:45:19 | For those planning to use 4E rules and 4E Realms, what class or character concept are you most interested in trying out? Will you stick with a "classic" character like the wizard, and explore how they work now in the Realms, or will you go for one of the new concepts? Or for those that are DMs, what area in 4E will you first take your players? Are you interested in exploring one of the new/changed areas, or do you think you'll start from a "classic" region like Cormyr and move out from there? |
| #2xmen510May 26, 2008 7:57:56 | I will be me. I will explore over there. :P I am not sure at the moment. I am really waiting on seeing the Core Books. I will be waiting for a FR campaign until both Core Books come out for that. Having said that, I will probably try out a fighter to begin with. I think Cormyr might be interesting. Since the world will have changed so much I will probably try travelling to get a new feel for the world in the new game my DM is talking about. In the game I might DM, I am thinking to start either in the Western Heartlands or the Dalelands, but will hold off on a final decision until I've read the 2 books as I might find something else I would rather start off with. The one thing that is interesting about the 4E Realms is that everything we be new again. you won't know everything, sort of like how you entered the game the first time. This can help your attitude for the first game I think. :D |
| #3TheriseMay 26, 2008 8:06:59 | Personally, I'd like to leave my DM hat behind for a while and become a player again. I love playing mages and priests, so I'd like to start with one of those. For a starter area, I'd like the tried and true region of Waterdeep or the Silver Marches (Luruar), and branch out from there. |
| #4krevonMay 26, 2008 9:28:16 | I'd like to become a player for a while too, but I don't think that will happen. If I did, I've been wanting to play a priest of moradin for a while. |
| #5merrikcaleMay 26, 2008 9:48:21 | the warlord does seem interesting, though Marshall seems like a better name |
| #6JudgeDookieMay 26, 2008 9:49:35 | I'd like to become a player for a while too, but I don't think that will happen. If I did, I've been wanting to play a priest of moradin for a while. Clangeddin would kick Moradin's booty any day. That said... I feel you have to go with a magic user on this one. I've always hated trying to be a wizard and becoming completely useless--or dead--in the early encounters of a campaign. From what Krevon said in another thread, they look to be able to hold their own now. I would think its time to get mid-evil at this point. And anywhere you went would be interesting. It is all "new" after all. Even the places you've been to before have changed in some regard. |
| #7markustay63May 26, 2008 10:13:52 | I'd like to play a Swordmage, if I can get my son to run the 4e rules (going to be having two campaigns with two systems in my house). It won't be in the Realms though. |

Are you interested in exploring one of the new/changed areas, or do you think you'll start from a "classic" region like Cormyr and move out from there? I'm inclined towards an area like Baldur's Gate (lots of change as a result of the Spellplague but connected to Faerun). Although I'll most likely not have my first campaign begin in Baldur's Gate because in my mind it is a video game, not a D&D game. But a place with that drastic change is what I'm looking for. |

They do have something interesting planned for Baldur's Gate that may help to differentiate it from the video game. It's supposed to be a much larger city, with a lot of new areas where an influx of settlers has increased the population. If they give us a map of the new city, it could become the next Waterdeep, but with a political flavor and city history that's quite different. Interesting angle for new adventures, really! |

Interesting angle for new adventures, really! I'm going to doubt that it will become the next Waterdeep. I'm picturing it more as a sprawl of hastily built dwellings and scum filled streets. The rapid increase in population would have been overwhelming. I imagine the "political flavor" will lean more towards a black network of thieves guilds and such, rather than any real power of the people. Be interesting to check out though. |
| #11krevonMay 26, 2008 13:03:39 | My last purchase was in August 2007. Oddly enough my PC's are going to face off against a Shadow Weave branch of the enclave of wizards that the PC Alediran is from. |
| #12Mr_MiscellanyMay 26, 2008 13:05:24 | Cormyr, Cormyr, Cormyr and surrounding environs. Unless something comes along that totally draws my attention away from there. I’m also tempted with the idea of re-working some of the 4E Realms to suit my own tastes. Sort of my own take on how things might turn out 100 years after Mystra’s fall. For example, the Goblin Marches could have been resurrected during the time of the Spellplague and/or goblinkin the Realms-over could be on the rise. That’s one part of the Realms I’ve always kept alive to some degree in my 3.5 game, even though it went away in Third Edition. On a smaller scale, I’m relishing the opportunity to take new places that are totally big, fresh and new (like Baldur’s Gate) and fill them in. I mean think about it: The only lore is old lore. From an in-game history standpoint, we have this basically new city that’s going to have gone through tumultuous changes and swelled rapidly in size, but that is otherwise not detailed. For DMs who like to build NPCs, organizations and do the kind of fill-in writing that brings a city alive, the new Baldur’s Gate is going to be a gold mine. A book like that would only help me add to my unique FR version of Baldur’s Gate. As an aside: This is why I want to see more Realms DMs participate on this forum. The creative energy and drive of a Realms DM is (IMNSHO) 10 times that of any other DM. For people who are positive, energetic and enthusiastic, this new setting is just going to be a great opportunity. We should build on that. |
| #13alediranMay 26, 2008 13:06:09 | Oddly enough my PC's are going to face off against a Shadow Weave branch of the enclave of wizards that the PC Alediran is from. Oddly enough there are not even neutral alligned Tir'ent, they are all good-aligned and they don't do SW, they are devout followers of the Seldarine and Mystra. |
| #14suin_bahhar_02May 26, 2008 13:09:50 | If I get to play: A stealthy moon elf swordmage or a tiefling (if the background for them is tasty, otherwise human) fighter warlock with a fiendish pact. If I get to DM: Try out that points of light feel they are shooting for in core. On the new dragon continent by Ed! Or a frontier town on the northern borders of Rashemen and Thay. Never delved into the Red Wizards deeply and they sure sound exiting to me now. |
| #15krevonMay 26, 2008 13:19:29 | I would like to head over to the great rift myself. The silver marches are always a good fall back on me. |
| #16alediranMay 26, 2008 13:19:54 | I wasn't trolling, I apologize if you thought that. It's actually in the module I'm running. I can't post it but you can read it in Anauroch: The Empire of Shade. Alediran is only member of House Tir'ent, which is a personal creation, he doesn't belongs to any other group. If they are mentioned in Anauroch then I'll have to sue WotC for stealing my IP. |
| #17orc_kirinMay 26, 2008 13:23:51 | I've taken out a sub thread that multiple patrons reported. The reported posts were bringing down the level of discussion. Stay on topic, be polite, and carry on. |

| #19TheriseMay 26, 2008 13:36:43 | Cormyr, Cormyr, Cormyr and surrounding environs. (...) Heh! Yeah, I love Cormyr also. It's just such a classic of the genre, the enduring kingdom with knight-protectors. I'm glad that it's one of the places they haven't changed a lot. |
| #20GreenKnightMay 26, 2008 14:26:16 | Well, I'll probably be playing LFR at first. So I'm limited to the Regions available for LFR play. Namely Aglarond, Akanul, Baldur's Gate, Cormyr, Dalelands, Dragon Coast, East Rift, Impiltur, Luruar, Moonshae Isles, Tymanther, and Waterdeep. Out of those, the ones I most want to play in are Aglarond, Cormyr, the Dalelands, Impiltur, Luruar, the Moonshae Isles, and Waterdeep. So those'll be the regions I'll be exploring at first in the 4E Realms. Although I may end up making two different characters in order to justify covering all that ground (I can see one character ranging from Aglarond and Impiltur to the Dalelands and Cormyr on a regular basis, but travelling to the Sword Coast, too, seems a bit much). So one character, likely a Human Paladin of Torm, will be active in Aglarond, the Dalelands, Impiltur, Cormyr, and maybe the Dragon Coast. Another character will be active in Waterdeep, Luruar, the Moonshae Isles, and maybe Baldur's Gate, too. |

Baldur's Gate was never very detailed to begin with. As for the only lore being old lore? Maybe, but we won't know for sure until the FRCG comes out. |

For people who are positive, energetic and enthusiastic, this new setting is just going to be a great opportunity. I disagree to an extent. A good DM is a good DM no matter what setting he/she plays. The FR of the first three editions was a rich setting that I think only helped the creative DM. With all that lore to build upon, there were a lot of sparks to the imagination. I am not saying that 4E discourages a DM, but by removing the lore as much as they are, they are removing the FRs greatest characteristic: the inspirational detail |
| #23lord_typhusMay 26, 2008 21:17:22 | Truthfully, I most likely won't be playing 4ED. Nothing against it other than the fact that it will pose a big change to the Realms and I don't know for sure if I'll like the new stats/rules/etc. as they'll be presented in 4ED. My campaign though, is centered in Waterdeep/Undermountain, and the surrounding area. My character's a Barbarian 2/Fighter 2 from the North who focuses a great deal on fighting with Axes...anyone know a good PrC to add to this sometime in the future? Maybe that one from Complete Warrior, or Comp. Adventurer- I can't remember which; that barbarian PrC...or maybe drunken master or something unusual like that...suggestions? |
| #24DonnyDMMay 26, 2008 23:23:31 | If I got to play it would be cleric/mage or a mage with some cleric at wills. For running I'd like my players to explore Tilverton, The Stonelands, The Haunted Halls of Eveningstar, Mines of Tethyamar, City of Shade, and Zhentil Keep. After all that who knows. May just stick to running RPGA events. |
| #25reneshatMay 27, 2008 0:24:11 | My first character is going to be a wizard. He doesn't remember where he comes from, or even really where he was or what he was doing two months ago. He has a good number of disconnected memories from many different times and places throughout the history of the Realms. He remembers casting powerful spells, just can't remember how he did it, or figure out why he can't now. He remembers his name, but that's about it. He refused to believe that Mystra is dead, and still worships her. He will tell anyone that asks that if they think that Mystra is dead, they are fooling themselves. He can't quite explain her silence, or why she would be keeping her existence a secret, but she's out there somewhere, he's sure of it. I figure this way I can have a character that experiences 4ed Realms the same way that I do, as someone with knowledge of the past, but not the present. Besides, playing a half-mad wizard, come on, it's Iconic for a reason. :D |

So that bit of Halasters' mind that slipped into you from the Spellplague that went through time, shattered your mind and allowed His personality to take control without knowledge that you once were Halasters but has taken on the aspect of your name for identity becuase you no longer remember that you were once Halaster? Have I got all that correct? |
| #27gomeztooMay 27, 2008 14:33:31 | My first character will be a female wizard called Valencia, from Everlund. Her father is a barber, but she didn't have his talent. She is known as 'the butcher of Everlund' after cutting a notable's ear off. She did inherit her grandfather's talent for magic, and now she works as a local witch, supporting the local farmers. The woman that is now her mentor tought her how to be wise with magic, and taught her about the 'old ways'. As such, she follows the teachings of the last Mystra. V is kind, highly intelligent, and incredibly clumsy. One of the best friends you could have - as long as you won't let her cut your hair... |
| #28zaeshirMay 27, 2008 14:51:17 | Spellscarred Human Ranger who has lived his entire adult life (about 15 years, depending on how old I want to make him) in the desert. That desert will either be Anauroch or the Plains of Purple Dust, depending on the state of human (ie, non-dragonborn) civilization over near Mulhorand. I prefer the Egyptian flavor, but I think I can do a quick convert to be more Bedine like if the necessity arises. |
| #29hawkinsthedmMay 27, 2008 17:55:58 | I will not "be" in the 4e Realms, and I will not explore it. I hope the rest of you have fun. Please consider that when 4e was initially announced, even though I was not at all enthusiastic about the rules set, I was enthusiastic about the Realms getting and update (preferably those areas that did not get updated in 3e). I then was dumbstruck by what was hinted at in the prologue/epilogue of the Orc King and the last few pages of the Grand History of the Realms, but I remained optimistic that they would explain these tidbits of lore headlined in the GHotR and the stated intention to "slim down" the list of deities would be explained in a comprehensible manner that applied logic. But as more and more of the "new" Realms were revealed, I realized that it was almost an entirely new campaign setting founded on illogical reasoning that I had no desire to be a part of. Anyways, out of respect for Ed Greenwood (if you do not know who he is, you have no business in the Realms at all), I will be at Borders the day that the 4e FRCG (Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide) is released, and I will give it a good look-over before completely discounting it. Maybe it will be spin-doctored to the point that it will blow my socks off and I will buy it. Just make sure that you too check it out before you buy it. The success or failure of the 4e Realms (and probably the release of any other campaign settings with this new format [2-3 books and some DDi articles] will depend on how well the 4e Realms sells. Please make sure that you like what you are buying before you buy it. |

I was nervouse about the Realms now I'm just depressed but the 4E game seems OK |
| #31bonzaiMay 28, 2008 16:06:01 | I also will not be participating in the Realms 4.0. For a variety of reasons. 1st: I don't care for the majority of the changes. 2nd: I have a substancial financial investment in the Old Realms products, and have niether the desire, nor the space to replace them all with 4.0 products. 3rd: I am still not sure if I will make the conversion to 4.0 at all. I am reserving judgement until I get to look over the system. If I like it enough to switch over, I will be doing so in a home brew campaign. 4th: I do not like that I'll have to pay monthly subscription fee's to have access to most of the new web based material. At least with printed published sources, I could look over what they offered, and then buy it as needed. Now I'd have to subscribe to the articles, whether I wanted what was in them or not. As I said, I have already started laying the ground work for a homebrew setting. Whether I run it in 4.0 or 3.5 I have yet to decide. |
| #32rob_spadeMay 28, 2008 17:46:29 | Im in the dm side of the realms, but a warlord sounds neat. For a bbeg, a drow cleric of cyric. |
| #33reneshatMay 28, 2008 18:10:00 | So that bit of Halasters' mind that slipped into you from the Spellplague that went through time, shattered your mind and allowed His personality to take control without knowledge that you once were Halasters but has taken on the aspect of your name for identity becuase you no longer remember that you were once Halaster? I haven't quite decided what the actual story will be, or really if I am going to decide on a true reason. I was thinking, if my character has no clue what's going on, why should I? That was one of my first ideas though, that and the idea that maybe my madness was the result of the Spellplague alone. I'm still in the creation stage, so I have plenty of time to decide. |
| #34xmen510May 28, 2008 20:23:44 | Sounds interesting. I was just joking around of course. It is nice to see people come up with different ideas instead of just playing the sme thing all the time. |
