| #1shelbydapimpOct 29, 2009 22:28:39 | I've been reading alot of Fantasy novels lately and I came to a sudden conclusion. |
| #2shelbydapimpOct 29, 2009 22:30:27 | It's really crazy to me to think that there's no prominent gnome characters and stories. |
| #3The_SilverswordOct 30, 2009 6:56:12 | Gnomes like it that way. They perfer to be in the back ground, and not have any spotlight. They have that fade away ability after all. Theyre known as the Forgotten Folk for a reason. Blame it all on those damn Halflings, they always got to be in the spotlight. Any time a writer wants a small quirky character in the book they pick a halfling. So I think its all the Halflings fault, theyre keepin the Gnomes down. Personally I like Gnomes, Ive played more Gnomish characters than Halflings. Gnomes just seem more interesting to me, they really have their own thing goin, where as Halflings it seems like are just little humans, and have pretty much been assimilated into Human culture IMO. |
| #4VaultDwellerOct 30, 2009 7:43:11 | Gnomes are known to go adventuring only on occasion, betwixt stints as turnip salesmen that is. Occasionally the markets get down and the formally self-respecting purveyors of fine veggies are forces to prostitute their abilities in the form of adventuring. |
| #5Demetri_KnighthawkOct 30, 2009 14:02:19 | Asside from Jan Jansen of baldurs gate2, as is vaugely mentioned above, there are the tinkergnomes of mount nevermind.... Which is where gnomes get so little love. Many people think gnome then think technophile with spring-loaded sprocket spitters. Oddly enough, I once had a gnome clockwork assassin, everything on him was mechanical based including gear-shaped-shurikens and the steam-powered-hydraulic-crossbow that was basicly a shoulder mounted balista... Yes I would sneak attack with siege weaponry |
| #6Matt_JamesOct 30, 2009 19:30:29 | Gnomes are evil bastards! |
| #7The_SilverswordOct 30, 2009 20:08:26 |
Thats why I love em!!! |
| #8The_SilverswordOct 30, 2009 20:09:07 |
QFT! |
| #9The_SilverswordOct 30, 2009 20:32:14 | the old gray box set had a beautiful Gnome illustration in it, but all the races were beautifuly drawn, Im not sure who the artist is but its some great work, I wish I could find some online so I could post em. Might have to just scan em in. |
| #1018DELTAOct 30, 2009 23:52:19 |
Perv...You must like miget porn, huh? ![]() |
| #11sfdragonOct 31, 2009 1:15:44 |
actually no |
| #1218DELTAOct 31, 2009 3:03:07 | Ok, I was beginning to think that you were sick in the head... We can get back to the regularly scheduled spam-fests... |
| #13pamelaOct 31, 2009 3:41:37 | I've known only two people who played a gnome, and only one time each. I certainly never had any interest in playing one so I certainly have no interest in reading about them. |
| #14Matt_JamesOct 31, 2009 13:16:32 | I play the pudgy small gnomes, not what they are currently depicted as. Still, they are vile little bastards! |
| #15Demetri_KnighthawkOct 31, 2009 13:35:08 |
Whats wrong with miget porn? Little people need big-love too. Think about it this way, the average male is porn-star sized to a miget woman and average womens breasts are baywatch-class to Miget men. And, all women are beautiful naked, regardless of race or +2 to Cha. |
| #16The_SilverswordOct 31, 2009 14:11:12 |
I disagree with this part here. I would offer up some pics as proof but that would probably get me banned, aside from earning the enmity of every guy here, most of the ladies too probably. |
| #17The_SilverswordOct 31, 2009 15:42:50 | Right Right Back to Gnomes and how awesome they are |
| #18sfdragonOct 31, 2009 16:04:09 | Gnomes are awesome villians |
| #19The_SilverswordOct 31, 2009 16:09:04 | Uhm well sure they could, but i dont think their capacity for villanry is any greater than any other race. |
| #20sfdragonOct 31, 2009 16:13:38 | yes but nobody suspects the gnomes.... |
| #21Demetri_KnighthawkNov 02, 2009 0:33:09 | Years ago (3.5), having just seen Van Helsing with the gamer group, the DM throws something we didnt expect to see next week: We are sent to a village to save them from an undescribable horror. We were all expecting vampires and such attacking the people, what we got instead was four gnomish crossbowmen: |
| #22green_elven_vampireNov 02, 2009 14:20:31 | It truly is a shame indeed that Gnomes are hardly featured in the Realms. Especially with Trickster gods like Garl Glittergold and Baravar Cloakshadow. I would read any book with a Rogue/Cleric of Baravar Cloakshadow!!! |
| #23StiggerNov 13, 2009 5:06:34 | There was a psychotic pincushion of an armored gnome in one of the Harper books, wasn't there? Don't recall much about him though. |
| #24ghostvarkNov 13, 2009 11:44:57 | A while ago, I tried to get my friends to play an all gnome game... it wouldn't fly... so... I made them the enemies of the great empire that ruled most of the continent, conquered a few centuries before the game started... and they wanted revenge and freedom. Too bad they went crazy and built mechanical repeating crossbows, zepplins, fire-ball based "bombs" and so on and allied themselves with a evil druid named Marcos the Black who was using their revolt as a distraction from his attempts to summon the forces of Chaos and Elemental Earth to reforge the world in his name. Good times had by all -- especially since units of illusionists would help Marcos accomplish his goals. I happen to like the various gnome archetypes -- but my picture would give it away...... |
| #25StiggerNov 13, 2009 14:42:40 | And, all women are beautiful naked, regardless of race or +2 to Cha. And sadly, most people's opinions of what actually constitutes that is sorely lacking... unless of course you're into concentration camp chic. |
| #26The_SilverswordNov 13, 2009 19:01:59 |
Im more intrigued by your user name. Back in high school the people i hung out with decided i needed a nickname, unfortunately all the cool nicknames like snake and spider were already taken so I got stuck with Aardvark, which was shortened to just Vark after awhile. I am not a ghost however. what about gothic gnomes??? Those are the Ravenloft Gnomes. |
| #27StiggerNov 13, 2009 19:06:16 | Dunno, Ravenloft shows a bit too much monster to be truly Goth... unless you're going for Shock Goth, which I don't really consider Goth in the first place, just weird. |
| #28The_SilverswordNov 13, 2009 19:09:06 | Shock Goth Gnomes! Now that paints an interesting picture! |
| #29StiggerNov 13, 2009 19:47:35 | See, I just don't see gnomes as truly Goth... Steampunk, now that I can get into for them. |
| #30The_SilverswordNov 13, 2009 20:30:50 | See, I just don't see gnomes as truly Goth... Steampunk, now that I can get into for them. Yes thats how ive always seen the Gnomes, especially the ones from Lantan. |
| #31JudgeDookieNov 13, 2009 23:05:57 |
Is that why you went to so much time, effort, and money to use Callisto as your avatar and not your hot self? ![]() |
| #32JudgeDookieNov 13, 2009 23:11:46 | Ironically enough, the first D&D character I ever played was a gnome "fighter". Funny enough, the DM got pissed that I tried to fight too much and wasn't "cuurios enough" for a gnome. To the OP, not sure if you were aware, but in DragonLance, Kender replaced Gnome's as the "curious" race and, therefore, that is why there is no mention of them (except as the Tinkers). |
| #3318DELTANov 14, 2009 1:43:51 | So you were playing "Scrappy Dappy Doo"?![]() "Let me at' em, let me at' em. I'll splat them"! ![]() |
| #34JudgeDookieNov 14, 2009 2:13:44 | Pretty much, my man. Do you remember the first times rolling the dice? Hitting the one--or the 20, depending on your edition--is the ****. Let me at 'em!! ;( |
| #35IluvrienNov 14, 2009 5:04:43 | One of our group has just started playing a gnome assassin. It is quite the extraordinary experience. Although, we have only had one session. He spent most of his time on his back in the middle of a swamp trying to free himself from the cloying clutches of the marsh, and only managed to assassinate a zombie.... before strongly considering murdering the mayor of the town we were trying to investigate and save. Gotta love gnomes. |
| #36The_SilverswordNov 14, 2009 5:10:51 | Gnome Assassin!? That does sound interesting, i could see their fade away ability complementing the Assassin class. I just got done running my players thru the Spellgard adventure. All those poor Gnomes slaughtered! I just might have a Gnomish Assassin tracking them down in revenge for the massacre. |
| #37JudgeDookieNov 14, 2009 18:43:14 | One of our group has just started playing a gnome assassin. Unfortunately, evil gnomes seem to be the only ones that get any spotlight. The last gnome I remember reading about was R.A's in the Hunters Blade Trilogy.
It's a hit or miss thing. Unfortunately, the people who think its a hit or the ones missing something. |
| #38windmanNov 14, 2009 20:28:49 | Gnomes get no love 'cause they smell like budoosee. |
| #39JudgeDookieNov 14, 2009 21:01:39 | Say what? Huh...???![]() |
| #40IluvrienNov 15, 2009 10:03:28 | Unfortunately, evil gnomes seem to be the only ones that get any spotlight. The last gnome I remember reading about was R.A's in the Hunters Blade Trilogy. Well this gnome started out evil (I have no idea if he is going to stay that way) because the player in our group playing him was sick to death of playing a "nice guy" while we dragged our (continuously) bleeding carcasses through the Keep on the Shadowfell. I do tend to prefer gnomes that are neither the crazy tinkerer kind or the evil stabby kind. Still, I have an abiding interest in how communities of hin and gnomes integrate themselves with the larger (and often more numerous races). |
| #41JudgeDookieNov 15, 2009 15:55:16 | As I have stated before, I'm more up for gnomes being "fey" creatures. Though, I would like to see them far more incorporated in the Realms than they have or will be. |
| #42The_SilverswordNov 17, 2009 15:53:04 | This is my favorite Gnome pic.![]() ahh the Old Gray Box Set, gotta love it! |
| #43me25Nov 19, 2009 18:27:24 | There was a gnome in NWN2. I don't remember his name, but he was a bard. I unlocked him a few weeks before my hard drive got wiped, I never really took him into battle or anything. Which leads me to think, Why do Gnomes get no love(from me)? |
| #44StiggerNov 19, 2009 18:29:14 | Grobnar Gnomehands. There was Boddyknock Glinckle (or however that went) in NWN1 too, that psychotic sorcerer who kept nuking civilians on me whenever I used him... |
| #45JudgeDookieNov 19, 2009 21:13:13 | There was a gnome in NWN2. I don't remember his name, but he was a bard. I unlocked him a few weeks before my hard drive got wiped, I never really took him into battle or anything. Which leads me to think, Well, if all gnomes acted like he did, then they deserve no love. Guy was a complete tool. |
| #46The_SilverswordNov 20, 2009 2:33:10 | Reading up on the Battle of Bones, and i came across this little tidbit on the Goblinoid army, to further illustrate how Gnomes have never gotten any love. |
| #47IluvrienNov 20, 2009 8:31:37 | Well they are getting love from me now. I am starting to read as much as I can about them before going back to my "hidden cities" idea as a basis for keeping quite a few gnomes alive during and post-spellplague in a "possible history" that I may well work on and present here (loss of copyrights through posting here be damned). |
| #48sfdragonNov 21, 2009 14:33:22 | Grobnar Gnomehands. because you like others may just find them annoying boddyknock was an arse and gnomehands was annoying, useful but annoying |
| #49The_SilverswordNov 21, 2009 16:03:42 | I just now met Boddyknock Glinckle, so from what im hearing i should dump they guy i got now ( the Halfling dude Tommi somethin or anuther?) and get the Gnome! I had the female bard for awhile too, i dont remeber her name, but she kept dieing so i got rid of her. |
| #50sfdragonNov 21, 2009 19:13:48 | I take the elf cleric..... but yeah halfling death gets old.... and she does die to much, I kept each of them long enough to do each of their side quests in each chapter... the gnome sorcerer... is actually pretty good for arcane punch |
| #51wulfgarsNov 24, 2009 9:34:35 | Personnally i think people don´t like Gnomes because we all have that childish misconcept of them , from the stories told in cartoons. |
| #52JudgeDookieNov 24, 2009 20:13:04 | I'm not sure what "misconcept" that would be. For me, the childish misconception was that gnomes were 2 foot tall and skittish creatures that snuck in and cleaned houses while families were away or asleep. I mean, I literally laughed my ass off when I was offered to play a gnome "fighter". --- BTW: Anyone out there that wondered about Google Chrome and how well it works, I advise--and strongly--to stay away from it. It really is absolutely a bare bones browser with no functionality. |
| #53The_SilverswordNov 24, 2009 20:16:20 | But Google Chrome has to be awesome! It was designed by Gnomes! |
| #54JudgeDookieNov 24, 2009 20:22:24 | Then all they created was an illusion of something that was supposed to be "da bomb". ****in' gnomes. Go tinker with **** that needs improving--don't try and invent ****. |
| #55StiggerNov 25, 2009 18:11:07 | Heh, that's funny. Sharwyn the bard was always good for me, almost never got killed on me. The elf bought it a lot though... as did that psychotic dwarf. The gnome wasn't really a problem, but he did keep pushing me into evil when he nuked citizens, and often got the guard to come after me. Sucked for RP, but not bad for minor XP at times. |
| #56joni-sanNov 28, 2009 18:54:57 | Eberron Gnomes were here. Other D&D Gnomes are pathetic comic relief. |
| #57The_SilverswordNov 28, 2009 18:59:08 | Eberron Gnomes ARE FR Gnomes! Where do you think Eberron got its high tech level from? Time Traveling Lantanese Gnomes of course! |
| #58StiggerNov 28, 2009 19:25:08 | Probably its Artificers and Mage-Wrights as well... with fewer concerns with twits like Manshoon and Tam around, they felt less constrained to do their stuff... probably a Janson involved in there somewhere. |
| #59The_SilverswordNov 28, 2009 19:37:04 | Indeed! We need to get a raiding party together and hit up the Eberron boards! And LM might get a little upset you called him a twit! of course I havnt seen too much of him latly, but he might come out of hiding just to blast you! |
| #6018DELTANov 28, 2009 20:25:20 | Nah, he realized just how out of control these forums are.![]() Plus the fact that we with the exception of you Silver are NOT impressed with his username, drove him into hiding yet again. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
| #61JudgeDookieNov 28, 2009 21:00:48 | Eberron Gnomes ARE FR Gnomes! Where do you think Eberron got its high tech level from? Time Traveling Lantanese Gnomes of course! I would argue with that statement. As far as I am aware, Lantan and it's gnomes didn't even come about until DragonLance set a premise for it by making all gnomes tinkers. Therefore, FR gnomes from Lantan are based off DL gnomes and Eberron gnomes are based off both the former. |
| #62The_SilverswordNov 28, 2009 21:06:22 | Didnt I mention that theyre Time Traveling Gnomes? But yeah good point there, i forgot about the DL tinkerers, although i think the Lantan Gnomes had a little more success with their inventions, than their cousins on Mt. Nevermind, not that im playing favorites or anything! |

| #67amedahastNov 29, 2009 9:02:27 | I've been reading alot of Fantasy novels lately and I came to a sudden conclusion. Probably it's like that movie Willow. Even though Willow was the "star" they had to have someone that the audience could identify with, so we got Madmartigan. Even then it's not a movie people really remember as standing out. Gnomes and hobbits, they're short. Nothing wrong with that, but kids usually want to identify with characters that are literally larger than life. Girls play dress-up in mom's clothes, Boys play adventurer or fireman. |

| #75JudgeDookieNov 29, 2009 22:57:56 | sides he is in the 3000+ post club I really wish we could get over this # of posts crap. It completely detracts from those that truly contribute to this place. When I first returned, I initially took the number of posts as a gauge as to how long someone had been around. I've quickly learned that it is simply a method to make oneself feel important--and one will post anything simple to make that number rise.
Keep saying "Skippy" and I'll just picture you with peanut butter slathered all over your balls, with a Shitzu ready for a treat. You'll no longer be "special", just perverted. -- Now, shall we get back to the gnomes...? |
| #76kroskaNov 30, 2009 9:27:07 | sides he is in the 3000+ post club Indeed. Those little gnomes make the best illusionists I've ever seen. The only other race close to match their mischievousness are either pixies, mephits or fairies. Also playing a illusionist gnome gives you a great deal amount of power in that you can solve problems in more interesting ways. Instead of diplomacy, instead of combat or intimidate and instead of even bluff you can change characters surroundings to have them make a active decision that benifits you. And those little gnomey guys have all that in the bag are running out to the get away wagon. Here's a good quote from Buddy "Aces" Israel from Smokin Aces that puts a good take on illusion. Buddy 'Aces' Israel: What do you see right now? You see exactly, and only what I choose to show you. That is illusion Ivy, that is the lie that I tell your eyes, makin' the magic happen, in the moment, in that split second... but seeing behind this motherfck'er and knowing... that it's all bullshit. |

| #79JudgeDookieNov 30, 2009 20:57:14 |
I agree. Which is why I have always pictured them more as fey, rather than such a prominent race in the Realms. Though, I would still like them to be a playable race. And, I also agree with Stig. That Buddy "Aces" quote went way weird on me. Felt like I need to be chewing some cow fungi to grasp that. |
