Why do Gnomes get no love....

I've been reading alot of Fantasy novels lately and I came to a sudden conclusion.

There's hardly any Gnome stories or really interesting or well written Gnome characters.

First let me say that I've been reading a crapload of forgotten realms and Dragonlance novels.

Most of the other core D+D races are featured in abundance. Let's take a look...

1. Elves : They are prominently featured in dragonlance with the laurana character and gilthanas, as well as the elven trilogy which features the 3 different elven races from dragonlance. In forgotten Realms, they are featured with stories about ariel moonblade and other races of elves, especially about the elves of Evermeet. hell even in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, they are featured extensively, with one of the coolest fantasy characters of all time being Legolas. Don't even get me started on Dark Elves, as there is the whole entire Drizzt series and war of the spider queen.

2. Dwarves : They are also featured prominently. There is Gimmli, there is Bruenor Battlehammer from the drizzt series, there is Flint Fireforge from the dragonlance chronicles, there's Ivan and Pikel boulder shoulder from the cleric quintet. there's Athrogate from the drizzt books who is a really cool villain who wields twin morningstars, and of course there is the dwarven nations trilogy from Dragonlance.

3. Humans : there is stridor in LOTR's, there is caramon and raistlin from dragonlance, as well as Elminster and kelbin Arunson from forgotten realms. there also is the seven sisters from the forgotten realms as well as humans in dragonlance like Crisania and goldmoon and riverwind...as well as sturm and huma.

4. Halflings/Hobbits : There of course is all the halflings from the shire in both the LOTR series and the hobbit. there is Regis from the drizzt series as well as several other well thought out characters who are halflings from D+D in the forgotten realms.

5. Kender : There is Tasselhoff burrfoot who is one of the best and most well written characters of all time. There is also several other dragonlance novels which feature kenders including Tales of Uncle Trapspringer and others.

6. Gnomes : .......I got nothing ?????

The only thing I can think of is the gnomes from mount nevermind were featured in one of the spelljammer books...but out of the hundreds of fantasy novels in the forgotten realms and dragonlance series....that can't be it can it ???

I want to read a good gnome story.

does anybody know of one ????

They are one of the featured races in D+D. Why do gnomes get no love ???

It's really crazy to me to think that there's no prominent gnome characters and stories.

They are one of the featured races in the D+D core books. (well except for version 4.0)

There is even storylines about deep gnomes, as belware dissledorp or whatever his name is is featured in the drizzt books. You know, the gnome that drizzt cut off his hands ??

but when it comes to rock gnomes....there's nothing.

It seems like a shame too, because with a gnomes tendancies to be involved with practical jokes and their love for both technology and magic.....I could really see an author making a really cool storyline with them.

Think tasselhoff, if he could cast spells and make gears and golems.

makes me wonder again why gnomes get no love ???

Gnomes like it that way. They perfer to be in the back ground, and not have any spotlight. They have that fade away ability after all. Theyre known as the Forgotten Folk for a reason. Blame it all on those damn Halflings, they always got to be in the spotlight. Any time a writer wants a small quirky character in the book they pick a halfling. So I think its all the Halflings fault, theyre keepin the Gnomes down.

Personally I like Gnomes, Ive played more Gnomish characters than Halflings. Gnomes just seem more interesting to me, they really have their own thing goin, where as Halflings it seems like are just little humans, and have pretty much been assimilated into Human culture IMO.

Gnomes are known to go adventuring only on occasion, betwixt stints as turnip salesmen that is.  Occasionally the markets get down and the formally self-respecting purveyors of fine veggies are forces to prostitute their abilities in the form of adventuring.

Asside from Jan Jansen of baldurs gate2, as is vaugely mentioned above, there are the tinkergnomes of mount nevermind.... Which is where gnomes get so little love. Many people think gnome then think technophile with spring-loaded sprocket spitters. Oddly enough, I once had a gnome clockwork assassin, everything on him was mechanical based including gear-shaped-shurikens and the steam-powered-hydraulic-crossbow that was basicly a shoulder mounted balista... Yes I would sneak attack with siege weaponry Innocent.

Whats wrong with miget porn? Little people need big-love too.

Think about it this way, the average male is porn-star sized to a miget woman and average womens breasts are baywatch-class to Miget men.

Years ago (3.5), having just seen Van Helsing with the gamer group, the DM throws something we didnt expect to see next week: We are sent to a village to save them from an undescribable horror. We were all expecting vampires and such attacking the people, what we got instead was four gnomish crossbowmen:
s31.photobucket.com/albums/c374/abaxa/Va... Lines 2,5,8,12
Each armed with A repeater crossbow from Van-helsing on dogback and shooting up the place before riding off. We all sat at the table stunned for 1 round as they went past emptying their drums, truly an indescribable horror. When we finaly beat them and tried to use the supercool crossbows, the DM explained that each requires exotic weapon proficency AND the ability to cast illusion spells (the best way for the DM to expresss how they were able to unload so many arrows without trouble)... for most of us that ment two feats sunk in for one weapon... Pass and sold for gold.

A while ago, I tried to get my friends to play an all gnome game... it wouldn't fly... so...

I made them the enemies of the great empire that ruled most of the continent, conquered a few centuries before the game started... and they wanted revenge and freedom.

Too bad they went crazy and built mechanical repeating crossbows, zepplins, fire-ball based "bombs" and so on and allied themselves with a evil druid named Marcos the Black who was using their revolt as a distraction from his attempts to summon the forces of Chaos and Elemental Earth to reforge the world in his name. Good times had by all -- especially since units of illusionists would help Marcos accomplish his goals.

I happen to like the various gnome archetypes -- but my picture would give it away......

Speaking as a former college sorority girl, and a girls' softball player prior to that, this is definitely NOT true.  And don't get me started on the unfortunate number of heifers in dorms.
There's a great deal of time, effort, money, and hours that go into looking good naked (heck, just to look good in clothes!), and not all women are up to the task.

And sadly, most people's opinions of what actually constitutes that is sorely lacking... unless of course you're into concentration camp chic.

Ironically enough, the first D&D character I ever played was a gnome "fighter". Funny enough, the DM got pissed that I tried to fight too much and wasn't "cuurios enough" for a gnome. smiley-rolleyes007.gif

To the OP, not sure if you were aware, but in DragonLance, Kender replaced Gnome's as the "curious" race and, therefore, that is why there is no mention of them (except as the Tinkers).

One of our group has just started playing a gnome assassin. It is quite the extraordinary experience. Although, we have only had one session. He spent most of his time on his back in the middle of a swamp trying to free himself from the cloying clutches of the marsh, and only managed to assassinate a zombie.... before strongly considering murdering the mayor of the town we were trying to investigate and save.

Well this gnome started out evil (I have no idea if he is going to stay that way) because the player in our group playing him was sick to death of playing a "nice guy" while we dragged our (continuously) bleeding carcasses through the Keep on the Shadowfell.

I do tend to prefer gnomes that are neither the crazy tinkerer kind or the evil stabby kind. Still, I have an abiding interest in how communities of hin and gnomes integrate themselves with the larger (and often more numerous races).

Reading up on the Battle of Bones, and i came across this little tidbit on the Goblinoid army, to further illustrate how Gnomes have never gotten any love.

"The goal of this offensive assemblage of viciousness was to capture the lands north and west of the Great Desert Anauroch. Overrun the North. was their guttural chant in goblin. (To ensure the proper enthusiasm in the expendable kobold shock troops, this was translated into kobold as Overrun the Gnomes..)"

Personnally i think people don´t like Gnomes because we all have that childish misconcept of them , from the stories told in cartoons.
And then there´s always the case of particular grudges , like my group , who doesn´t seem to trust our new player , a Gnome , because it reminds them of an NPC who betrayed them ( and the fact that the miniature is the same one doesn´t help , LOL)

#52

JudgeDookie

Nov 24, 2009 20:13:04
I'm not sure what "misconcept" that would be. For me, the childish misconception was that gnomes were 2 foot tall and skittish creatures that snuck in and cleaned houses while families were away or asleep.

I mean, I literally laughed my ass off when I was offered to play a gnome "fighter".  smiley-rolleyes007.gif

I would argue with that statement. As far as I am aware, Lantan and it's gnomes didn't even come about until DragonLance set a premise for it by making all gnomes tinkers. Therefore, FR gnomes from Lantan are based off DL gnomes and Eberron gnomes are based off both the former.

Probably it's like that movie Willow.  Even though Willow was the "star" they had to have someone that the audience could identify with, so we got Madmartigan.  Even then it's not a movie people really remember as standing out.

Gnomes and hobbits, they're short.  Nothing wrong with that, but kids usually want to identify with characters that are literally larger than life.  Girls play dress-up in mom's clothes, Boys play adventurer or fireman.

Keep saying "Skippy" and I'll just picture you with peanut butter slathered all over your balls, with a Shitzu ready for a treat. You'll no longer be "special", just perverted.

Now, shall we get back to the gnomes...?

Indeed. Those little gnomes make the best illusionists I've ever seen. The only other race close to match their mischievousness are either pixies, mephits or fairies. Also playing a illusionist gnome gives you a great deal amount of power in that you can solve problems in more interesting ways. Instead of diplomacy, instead of combat or intimidate and instead of even bluff you can change characters surroundings to have them make a active decision that benifits you. And those little gnomey guys have all that in the bag are running out to the get away wagon.

Here's a good quote from Buddy "Aces" Israel from Smokin Aces that puts a good take on illusion.
Buddy 'Aces' Israel: What do you see right now? You see exactly, and only what I choose to show you. That is illusion Ivy, that is the lie that I tell your eyes, makin' the magic happen, in the moment, in that split second... but seeing behind this motherfck'er and knowing... that it's all bullshit.

Shirley its not that werid! I havnt even begun talking about my Gnome character from a Highlander style campaign a friend of mine ran awhile back...
It was a 3.5 campaign, so Gnomes were still in the closet so to speak.

I agree. Which is why I have always pictured them more as fey, rather than such a prominent race in the Realms. Though, I would still like them to be a playable race.

And, I also agree with Stig. That Buddy "Aces" quote went way weird on me. Felt like I need to be chewing some cow fungi to grasp that.  smiley-rolleyes007.gif

Well, what do you want me to do with such dully coloured dice? No self-respecting elf would use dice that plain. Get the clear ones with the blue and red text and I'll see what I can do.

Yeah, there are distinct advantages to having a lover who's both male and female. I highly recommend it.

Yeah the clear ones with the red and blue text are sharp, I would of got them but i didnt see those until after i got the white ones, my wife will kill me if i get more dice, so i guess im stuck with the white ones.

Well, I'll see what I can do with what you have. I'll do my best, but with such ugly dice I can't promise much.

And suit yourself. Corellon's a little out of your league anyway.

I'll talk to the ORCS directly tomorrow. They, unfortunately for them, gave me their general email. smiley-rolleyes007.gif

Something about banning me and having an obligation to file counter-complaints and such. Silly stuff like that. smiley-think005.gif
