Why not make Forgotten Realms the default setting?

Apr 08, 2012 10:48:40 Well, considering that every single novel coming out from WotC in the foreseeable future is a FR novel, the Lords of Waterdeep boardgame was originally designed for Dark Sun, the John Rogers D&D comic has been put on hiatus for the Ed Greenwood FR comic, and that the Encounters program seem to be taking place in FR now,

I`d say it already is.

be better off having no defualt setting in the phbs/dmg etc.

core/default settings adds its lore to each setting and withevery body wanting the warforge in the phb, it would put a race in the setting that does not belong there.

as I said better to have no default setting in the dndnext

Dear lord no! That would be the most terrible thing that could happen to the Realms. The lore would be put through the meat grinder even more.

I pity the setting that is chosen to bear the burden of becoming default setting.

no to any defualt setting. besides default settings take uup too much space in the phb.

Well, the Realms were the deffault setting in 2nd Edition (in the sense that "If it's in D&D, it's in the Realms," which was TSR's policy at the time), which saw the most massive expansion of Realmslore under any version of the D&D game and the Realms were also picked to feature the customizable nature of the new (at the time) 3rd Edition D&D rules and later the Epic Level rules for same.

I wouldn't mind so much the Realms being the default, provided the game designers didn't neuter the setting for the sake of keeping the game bland...er, I mean "easily accessible".

I believe they planned to do this in 4e, but discovered reasons not (i.e. they wanted a 'generic' setting that anyone could use, and they also wanted to sell more books). But as mentioned: FR pretty much is the default setting.

Apr 10, 2012 20:39:47 Well if this D&D Next is as is what it is described as being I am sure one could play most any time period within the Realms without feeling an edition stamp on the game. That should work for Greyhawk as well or any of the settings.

At least, I have my fingers, toes, and bat like wings crossed for that kind of game.

I had wished for just this for a very long time, but then I am reminded of what happened to my beloved Greyhawk. Most other rules systems are married to specific settings, but for some strange reason, when they do this in D&D these days, its like the "kiss of death".

It is what it is - if they do go this route in 5e (which I suspect), I have high hopes they will be gentler this time out.

As it stands it is next to impossible to post a thread on any messageboard involving the Realms without some random drive-by troll dropping by to dump a fresh e-turd in response. Heck, even these boards turned into an e-toilet after the release of the 4E Realms.

So, please, a big NO to the Realms being the default setting despite the fact that it is the only setting that I run (although I still have plans for Midnight and Dark Sun).
