Why the Spellplague seems familiar...

OMG - I knew the Spellplague seemed familiar to me... it's basically THIS, just retooled specifically for Faerun.

Oddly, I think I would've preferred that, instead of what they've given us.

BTW - it's humor, folks. Don't get all cranky about it. It's one of my favorites of all time.

Exactly. One of the Thundarr cartoons has him leap into a pack of rat-people brandishing his Sun Sword, and he yells to his companion Ariel, "There can't be more than 50 of them, I'll be FINE!".

Considering how easily he takes them all out, the rat people must've been *cough* minions *cough* of the wizard Gemini. ;)

Actually, Thundarr operated under the 3E rules and basically treated those minions as one big bag of rats.

Do you know how many times I referenced THAT EXACT CLIP in the old FR forums? (before I 'met' you)

Dang... we have VERY similar taste.

Princess Arial - the FIRST cartoon 'hotty'. :D

Anyhow, I repeatedly used this pic in many threads when referencing the new Realms after the Gencon announcement -

Haha! That's right, I forgot! I was in the middle of trying to figure out how to put Thundarr eps on my ipod, and getting all nostalgic about them - when this hit me.

It must've been rattling around in my head from when you posted that a while back. Sorry for the re-do without a reference to that.

Dang... we have VERY similar taste.

Princess Arial - the FIRST cartoon 'hotty'. :D

I liked her for the constant string of one-line zingers that she'd tease everyone with. :D

Not too long ago, around the time of the Baldur's Gate computer game, I modeled a Rashemi witch character after Ariel. :D

I thought the 'Tears of Selune' especially apt.

*ahem*

Anandarr, the Rashemi!
In the year 1385, from out of dweomerheart flies a burning Cyric
hurtling between Faerun and Selune!
unleashing cosmic destruction! (*craaack... BOOM!*)

Toril's civilization is cast in ruin.
100 years later, Faerun is reborn,
a strange new world rises from the old:
a world of super-retcons, points of light, and at-will sorcery!

But one witch bursts her bonds to fight for justice
with her companions, Obould the Orc and Princess Alusair,
she pits her spells, her courage,
and her fabulous Staff of the Sun, (*vroom vroom vroom*)
against the forces of evil! (*Obould growls menacingly*)

She is... Anandarr, the Rashemi! :D

Nice. :D

-Also, as MT has pointed out, there are numerous similarities between what's going on in the Realms, and stuff that's happened in Mystara. MT, show 'em.

I think you might mean Aebrynis, which was the world that Birthright was set on.

Only the Shadowcrap (Shadowfel) came from there... and some of the Feywild stuff.

From Mystara we got the rules for the 'Epic Paths', from the Immortals ruleset (but FR has ALWAYS borrowed heavily from Mystara - a LOT came from there).

The Cosmology came from the Scarred Lands setting - scarily so.

The time advancment & Dragonborn (Draconians) came from the Dragonlance setting.

The flavor came from World of Darkness (and from 2e's Greyhawk box From the Ashes).

The Spellscars (Dragonmarks) came from Eberron (along with the Mournland/Changing land)

The Abberations came from Cthulhu Games... so did the plateau of Leng (Thay).

And the rules came from WoW.

Off the top of my head, that pretty much sums up everything I've been saying for the past 11 months.

But I'm sure I've missed a couple... ;)

(...) And the rules came from WoW.

I love it that (initially) people said, "gosh, that sounds like WoW rules", then tons of people came back with the classic "NO IT'S NOT!" argument, and then Mearls recently admits that a lot of the rule dynamics were MMORPG inspired.

Turns out it was a wee bit WoW-inspired after all. lolz! :D

So all the talk about 4e attempting to target MMORPG players wasen't just pointless drabble. The new look certainly looks MMOish. It kinda lost the "crusty" and archaic" feeling of old D&D and replaced it with something Blizzard Entertainment might have used for a game.

No, Thundarr was last produced / made in 1980-81. They had it re-run up through 1987 or so, I believe. But very recently, it's been on the cartoon network (last year and this year) as re-runs and they sold a small line of new toys for it, heh. Yep, on Boomerang, that was it!

Maybe they will get around to making the movie of Thundar (call it Dungeons and Dragons 3), since they are making all of those old cartoons into movies anyway (Transformers, GI Joe)

Oh, I must not be familiar with your times, since now a days goths, emos, scene kids, and posers all hang together and you don't even know who is who anymore, its just a "rebellious" mainstream trend. Of course, I know a few that stand out yet still hang with the main crowd just to get attention.

Goths these days... well, I'll just say they're a far cry from the ones in my youth, to the point I don't really consider them goths in the sense we were. Sounds a bit arrogant perhaps, but I don't really consider buying a black dress, putting on some eye-liner, and doing a few lines constituting an actual goth. Was a lot more into the music, literature, creativity (no one out there to make those fabulour outfits except us) and the philosophy rather than just 'being cool' back then.

Well, a lot of people die in the Spellplague, we know that much, and goth music often uses death and dying as a recurring theme, so link up there...

D&D has succubi, and incubi as well, so link up there...

Things in the Realms are red and yellow, Lliira for instance uses both of those colors, so link up there...

See, totally on subject in a roundabout sort of way, no matter what opinion the figment is imagined as having. :D

And to keep this on-topic, hasn't everyone wanted to do this with his/her barbarian?

It is unhealthy... you could rupture something laughing like that, or choke, or any other number of gruesome things.

I know, I'll stick a kitten in a blender every time you watch one and sacrifice it to some dark deity of Rino-death to appease it so that it spares your life. I can be so damned kind sometimes... :angelhide

Not really that gothy though by my standards actually... and no, never listened to them. Lacuna Coil is about as metal as I allow my goth to get, and they're pretty recent by my way of looking at things.

I sense the Cure.

It starts there, and it moves in time to see the results of that. Gonna get tought for the Free Council (could even get split from the Pentacle Order) and the Seers of the Throne.

As to the Spellplague, I'm not in favor of it.

I just think they could've made a new post-apocalyptic setting. How much that actually appeals to me, they messed with my Realms!

-Odds are, they aren't going to be making any new settings. The Core stuff isn't a setting. It's a pseudosetting, but it's not an actual setting. And, if they keep their promise that every year, they will be updating an old, defunct setting into 4e, there's plenty of material already there. 2009, Eberron. 2010, Greyhawk. 2011, Dragonlance. 2012, Planescape. 2013, Spelljammer. 2014, Dark Sun. And so on.

-Note, that everything past Eberron is just speculation right now.

Dark Sun and Ravenloft I could definitely see fitting in with their PoL concept... not too sure about the rest, but I don't seem to recall them being a great fit except for maybe Greyhawk. DL I know nothing about, so... can't speak to that.

-It's very likely that Planescape gets brought back, due to mentions of Sigil and a whole new cosmology to explore, and all of that, and I wouldn't say that Planescape fit with the whole 'Points of Light' thing.

Stigger

Jul 18, 2008 13:35:48

Neither do I, but from being a game-geek and LGS lurker I've learned a thing or two, and I would say it depends on which age you are playing in.

Just from my amateurish knowledge of DL, I recall their being one age where all the gods 'went away' and evil was prevalent everywhere (I think it had something to do with Takhisis/Tiamet "locking the other gods out" of the sphere or some such idiocy).

GH is a good choice, most especially the period during and immediately following the Greyhawk Wars.

Cerillia (Birthright) would probably work, although I know less about it then Dragonlance. From what little I know, it almost has a Ravenloft flavor in regards to 'Lords' ruling over their 'Realms' with absolute (magical) power. Some of the darker Realms (ruled by evil-types) would fit POL, I'm willing to wager.

As fior the rest of Toril...
K-T wouldn't work - it's pretty damn civilized in Shou-Lung. Outside of that empire though all bets are off, so it's like one HUGE point-of-light surrounded by darkness. Then again, a lot could have changed in the last 10-15 years (which I am working on), so it might be slightly more POL by now. The two related sub-settings - the Hordelands and Malatra are really TOO uncivilized. There is perhaps one or two 'Points of light' within each of those regions (although there are civilized kingdoms nearby for both).

Maztica screams POL - too bad it was the first thing they decided wouldn't work in 4e.

Zakhara is actually perfect. Even though the whole thing is a huge civilized empire (just like Shou Lung), it is divided into city-states surrounded by deserts and other 'badlands' filled with monsters and elementals.

Anchorome and the Maztican replacement will probably be 100% POL (if Anchorome gets any coverage what-so-ever).

-I'm no expert on Dragonlance, either, but I believe this was the mythical "Fifth Age", which every single person who I know that likes/liked Dragonlance disliked.

Yeah, I've been watching it recently, its a blast.:D

Stigger, 5th Age post WoS (more correctly called the Age of Humanity) would fit quite well with points of light as ancient kingdoms have been long displaced and it seems numerous nations are fracturing. I woudn't go poking around Silvanesti though, or Solamnia, they've got Imperial problems.

Taladas on the other hand, would work much better with points of light.
