-Both. Some of the years have obvious connections to some of the goings-ons in the setting at that time (In the Year of Lightning Storms, for instance, the novel Blackstaff makes numerous mentions of lightning, and lightning hitting Blackstaff Tower), while others don't, really.

Yeah, I'm aware. Which is why I ask. The whole thing seems stupid to me--naming them prior, rather than after.

Hopefully, this time around, years will mean something and we'll have some foretelling.

-Well, they are based off of divinations by seers. I like it that some are accurate, while others aren't. That way, I don't know for certain that...in 1,417 DR, the Phaerimm get their vengeance (1417, Year of The Phaerimm's Vengeance).

Methinks the Forgotten Realms Calendar was out long before any Grand Histories, pdf or book. The only thing one needs to clarify whether these came out of Ed's / Alaundo's quill or not, but given that most names have been used every since, I would think so. The version I have saved comes from September 2000 - which is not to say that it is older, of course.

Hmm, well I still can elude to it for awhile. Not reaching 1385 for several year ís my guess.

Agauthra the Mad was the sage who babled the prophecies right? She did forsee the Spellplague later with that Smash the star thing, right? Was she neglected in those days? She lived for how long?

Who was the oracle that prophecied the Shadow Roll of Years?

-Right.

-Well, 1385 was the Year of Blue Fire, and the Spellplague manifested itself in blue fire, so...

Who was the oracle that prophecied the Shadow Roll of Years?

-Agauthra. The Shadow Years were her nightmares, that she recorded into either the Book of the Black, or the Leaves of One True Night.

-Agreed. The Book Of One True Night, and the Leaves of Darkness (or whatever those were called), I have no problem with that. But, the Black Chronology is getting too much into the "Good & Evil versions of everything" territory.

That's all of them. They only go up to 1600 DR. After that...

I recall reading somewhere that they role of years was computer generated (well, they'd have to have been), maybe by some fans. Does anyone know?

They're good for plot-hooks. In our FR pbp community, we're using 1375, The Year Of Risen Elfkin, as a source for a general theme of 'elves' 'rising' in various ways (elves rising in revolt, aquatic elves rising up from the deep, drow rising up to the surface, dead elves being raised, etc) across the Realms.

Miss Rinonalyrna Fathomlin, a computer could have generated the names. All you need is a program that is set up to generate random names. That kind of stuff is pretty easy to do even when computers were first starting out catching popularity.

I wouldn't worry about an AI presence determining the future of the Realms. This naming thing did begin back in the days of the commodore, when Ed was still a youngin'. I imagine he was too involved in his FR to start programming anything.

-Cynosure, the..."robot AI" was..."up and running" before the events of that books. In other word, while the author might have been influenced from the book, in continuity, the creators of Stardeep and Cynosure probably did not know about the existence of the plane.

cynosure–noun
1. something that strongly attracts attention by its brilliance, interest, etc.: the cynosure of all eyes.
2. something serving for guidance or direction.

Seems appropriate that a plane called "Cynosure" would not be hidden, and would be the domain of the ultimate egoist.

I think the aforementioned "robot" was so named as per definition number 2.

Actually, the robot was named Cyno. He just talked so much that the elves kept answering “sure.”

Over time…

My robot is actually called, Cyno-Shut-the- -up.

I find he responds better.

I did not say computers couldn't have created the names, I'm just saying that I doubt they did. In the end, though, I don't know for sure. *shrug*

Oh I know I know I didn't mean to imply that you did or anything. Im just saying, with like a bazillion (maybe not that many) years to make up names for thats a lot of time and resources and everythghing.
