Finding Omega Tech and ancient junk

So how does your group go about playing out the discovery of omega tech and ancient junk?  My old dnd habit is to have players declare where the are searching and how.  Then if they look in the right area and maybe even roll well they find cool items and treasure.   For Gamma World I have taken a new approach to finding omega tech and ancient junk.

As I pass out omega tech cards, I have the players describe how and where there Pc found the item.  I also randomly determine wich character find ancient junk.  I let that character make the roll and tell them what they find for example, a bunch of army men, cordless drill, etc.  The player then describes how and where they found the item.  It is a more a strictly role playing approach, as opposed to the "role playing the roll playing approach" I often advocate.   Although I throughly enjoy the later approach, I am glad that I made the change for our Gamma World game, it has been lots of fun.  I have found a group of gamers can come up with more creative hiding spots for ancient swag on the fly better than a single Dm.

Since I'm using Heroscape terrain as my playing field, I just put the rune hexes that come with the game at spots on the map that are "guarded" by monsters. These hexes represent Omega Tech.

I'm running for a very casual group (well except for one guy who's building a power deck), and they're mostly into it for the wierdness.   Even so, I do have a 'placement' of Omega Tech.  For instance, a couple sessions ago, they fought 'land sharks,' and, true to form, the landsharks had been eating Omega Tech.  Enough for each character to have a draw.

One conciet I'm using is that if a charcter draws from his own deck, he's not finding a complete item (unless it's a consumable), he's finding a new power cell or something he can canabalize to get some failed gizmo he's been carting around working again.  Otherwise the draw mechanism doesn't make a lot of sense:  why does one guy keep finding mini-tanks, and somehow no one ever goes 'hey, I killed it, I want the Fing mini-tank this time!"

I think the idea there is that instead of one guy always finding mini-tanks, he just has a better chance of finding items that match what he wants - Those times where he's drawing from his deck, rather than the GM's deck. The randomness is fun, yes, but this lets the players stack the deck a bit in favor of their character.

I have no problem with Pcs stacking the thier deck with tech they like.  We have not played with individual decks yet, but I think If players get thier own omega tech decks they will be prone to use those items more, than they are now.  Currently they are all drawing from the same Dm deck, since they don't know if they will get an item back, the tend to hoard omega tech more than they use it.  I think when we go back to playing GW, we will start using individual decks.
