Hi,

I picked Gamma World up just a couple weeks ago.  This last Saturday I ran it for the first time.   I was doing the adventure in the back of the book.  The first encounter went pretty good the enemies went down pretty easily though but that was fine.  The second encounter though I ended up knocking out 2 players before the fight was done and the third encounter I did the same thing.  I wasn't fudging dice rolls and I know they are level 1 characters.

My questions are:

Am I doing something wrong or is that how the game goes?

Is there a good way to give some of the parties hitpoints back before the next fight?

Thank you much,

Encounters are normally seperated by at least a short rest (otherwise, the encounter doesn't end).

When a character takes a short rest, the following happens:
-Renew encounter powers
-Refresh alpha mutations
-Regain all hitpoints.

Check out page 23 of the core book.

Usually, yes.

Is there a good way to give some of the parties hitpoints back before the next fight?

A short (5 min.) rest should give them back all their hitpoints back before the next fight.

Two rules that are easy to miss:

Second Wind is a MINOR action that heals the character taking it his Bloodied value (half his hps!).

Any character can use a Standard Action to allow an ally to take his Second Wind (if he hasn't already, that is), even if the ally is stunned, unconscious, helpless or already dropped (as long as he's not actualy dead).  There's no roll required.

So, no, it's not too unusual to drop a character or two in the course of a GW combat - but there is a way to get them back up again, if they happened to have been dropped before they got a chance to Second Wind.
