| #1OraibiOct 14, 2010 14:51:34 | So if you need some more creatures to fight, just pull out your Monster Manual(s) from 4e D&D and go to town. Here's some that look like they'd work well, from looking through Monster Manual (1). Remember to make appropriate conversions, e.g. untyped damage becomes physical damage and so on. Level 1 Fire Beetle Cavern Choker Spiretop Drake Stirge Level 2 Needlefang Drake Swarm Kruthik Hatchling (minion) Kruthik Young Zombie (reflavored as victims of a contagious disease, not true undead) Level 3 Doppleganger Sneak Spitting Drake Iron Defender (reflavored as a guardian robot dog) Ochre Jelly (elite) Zombie Rotter (reflavored as victims of a contagious disease, not true undead) Level 4 Kruthik Adult Warforged Soldier (reflavored as android) Level 5 Fire Bat (could change the damage type to radiation for a Rad Bat) Tangler Beetle Rage Drake (these make nice mounts) Gelatinous Cube (elite) Vine Horror Level 6 Harpy Iron Cobra (reflavored as a guardian robot snake) Kruthik Hive Lord (elite) Warforged Captain (reflavored as android) Level 7 Macetail Behemoth (yay dinosaur!) | #5doctorcomicsOct 17, 2010 1:05:04 | I have found 4E monsters very helpful as I make up the ape army of Prime Nation. I started with the Great Ape (Skirmisher 4) and Silverback (Brute 5 Leader). I tinkered with the stat blocks to turn the Great Ape into a Soldier and I gave them both guns, but most of their numbers were great. Then I wanted to give them non-animal domesticated pets, so I used Fire Beetles, Giant Centipedes and Giant Ants (the last for Mounts). I want to add Girallons, but those are level 11 minimum. And while level 9-10 players could take a level 11 monster, I want to introduce Girallons much earlier than that. So I think I will just start with a level 11 Girallon and then "ratchet it down" a few levels to 8 or so. |
| #6ratmorningstar24Oct 20, 2010 15:38:11 | Now, when you started using creatures from the Monster Manuals [aside from adding level to damage and attack roll] are there any other conversions you needed to make or are they good to go? |
| #7strand0Oct 20, 2010 17:24:23 | Now, when you started using creatures from the Monster Manuals [aside from adding level to damage and attack roll] are there any other conversions you needed to make or are they good to go? That is a good question AND should have its OWN thread. IMHO ![]() |
| #8doctorcomicsOct 20, 2010 18:27:46 | Now, when you started using creatures from the Monster Manuals [aside from adding level to damage and attack roll] are there any other conversions you needed to make or are they good to go? Don't add the monster's level to attack and damage rolls. Monsters in GW are made the same way monsters are made in the rest of 4E. If you are using monsters from before MM3, you may want to raise their damage output and possibly adjust their attack numbers, defenses, and hit points based on the latest 4E errata, but this has nothing to do with GW. |
| #9borgheOct 21, 2010 8:32:56 | exactly. 4E monsters should already have their levels added in their stats (same as GW characters, to account for lack of feats). when you bring over monsters from MM3, Essentials or the Compendium bring them over RAW (with flavor). If you bring over monsters pre-MM3, adjust their damage output to be in line with 4E errata. |

I know you and Dr. Comics have mentioned the 4E errata fix to monster damage, but I can't find it buried in the Errata Document, can I get directions to it or the errata itself here? Thanks. |
| #11borgheOct 21, 2010 11:01:28 | as you are an insider, basically afaik just use the Compendium version of the monster. If the compendium version of a pre-MM3 monster is still the same as the MM1/MM2 version, add around 30-40% to it's damage. (or for high damage dealing monsters, around +2-3 damage for Heroic tier, +5-7 damage for paragon tier, and +10-12 damage for epic tier) |
| #12greyseerOct 21, 2010 11:07:56 | Thanks, I took copies of the pages from my MM's and made my own binder (that way I get some descriptive texts and some encounter builds) but I will use the Compendium to verify numbers. |
| #13doctorcomicsOct 21, 2010 12:33:50 | No Insider access is required. Go to the D&D home page, on the right hand side is "Rules Updates." There's the consolidated rule changes Or you can just get the DM's Guide errata. Both have the new rules for making monsters, including some adjustments to the attack bonuses and ACs for certain roles of monsters, and new damage tables for all monsters. |

Thanks Dr. Comics, so last page of the DMG erratta link and its corresponding value in the consolidated (though I did notice a formatting problem in the DMG Errata that was not in the Consolidated, look at the init modifiers row for the monsters). Anyway, thanks for the help and links. |
| #15doctorcomicsOct 21, 2010 17:00:22 | You're absolutely right on that formatting problem. I must have made half a dozen monsters before I figured out how it was supposed to look. Good eye. And happy to help. |

| #17khopesh122Nov 07, 2010 18:59:14 | One other thing to consider when looking for monsters to port over - a lot more options open up if you de-level more powerful monsters with the monster builder. If you ever decide to have a final battle for a GW campaign, you might be able to use something hefty like a de-leveled dragon or de-leveled tarrasque as a final boss. |

I wasn't even thinking about the monster builder...going to have to get that DDI subscription to do it easily...heh Good suggestion! I just looked for monsters that fit the bill. For instance, in my campaign, I'm using ideas from the RIFTS setting. My Splugorth minions are Neogi. They are the best, closest analog to that part of the setting that D&D has without me having to do crazy conversions from Palladium's stuff. |
| #19SerpineNov 07, 2010 21:56:53 | going to have to get that DDI subscription to do it easily... Better do it and download it soon, with them switching the character builder to web only on the 16th there is no telling what will happen to the monster builder long term. |
| #20Faust23Nov 07, 2010 22:34:46 | I've redrafted several 4e critters to use in GW. Myconids are now 'Shroomen' and have a tribal colony system. Fell Taints are now 'Hellyfish' and are an extradimensional threat. Cavern Chokers are Gray Alien assassin clones called Black Stranglers. And Hive Warriors & such are now Secticans. Didn't have to muck with the stats much either. I used the Black Stranglers with an Ambush Spider and the PCs waxed them pretty quick. |
