A friend suggested I post this here, so I figured why the heck not.

This is my Gammarized version of my hometown.

You should tell us about all those places and what they are based on.

Far left: Keep of the Sand Witch - Originally the area was a cluster of small cities that all merged to become Windsor.  The far west of town was the Village of Sandwhich, now called Old Sandwhich Towne.

Middle: Downtown - current downtown.  I stretched the area out so that it touched Jackson Park which is a large natural area in the center of the city.

Top Right of Downtown: Canyon Side - currently Riverside.  Windsor boarders Detroit Michigan and is separated by the Detroit River.  In my new version the river became so polluted (not much of a stretch right now) that it began eating away at its rock bed, eventually forming a huge deep Canyon.  Hasn't come up yet in game but I'm considering Detroit being Debt Riot - town that was burned to the ground due to some war over credit and debt.

Top Far Right - The Village.  This is a walled community (cheap wooden walls) called The Villages of Riverside currently.  Low budget housing made cheaply and poorly designed (all electric baseboard heating for example).  A slum in my Gamma Terra.

Under that - The Blade - Had a hard time on the name here.  Forest Glade - basically a sub devision.  Whoever designed it was an idiot, it's filled with Cul de Sac's, dead ends and not a single straight road in site.  Decided to draw a wall down the main curved road: Forest Glade Drive with the thought that two groups would be at war in there.

The Motocratic Theocracy - Chrysler Windsor Assembly plant.  Home of the Minivan.  Home of Stow and Go, Home of the VW Routan, Home of the Chrysler Pacifica, etc.  Windsor is a blue colar automotive town.  After last years huge blow to the Auto Industry Chrysler is the biggest employer left in the city.  Just made sense that it would become some type of kingdom unto itself.

Shire - Devonshire Mall - the biggest shopping center in the area.  Just figured that a huge shopping mall would be a good site to have.  No specific plans as of yet.

Roseland - Huge Golf Course.  Nicest one in the area.  Mainly the big green area stuck out on the map I used, so I thought to 'keep it'  Plus the name Roseland in the middle of a wasteland amused me.  I figure some Plant's own the area, or maybe a huge jungle or something.

FYI: this was my original source map:

Great to read. A nice example of taking your area and having fun with it.

Thanks! And keep us posted as your game continues.

Lovin' that map.  Any tips on how one might do that oneself?

I used Photoshop CS2.  I first grabbed the map I linked above and put it in a file.  Then I googled a bunch of stuff looking for a top down wasteland picture.  I eventually found one that I think was a starcraft map.  I re-sized that to be the same size as my Windsor map.

Made a new image at that size.  Set the Wastland map as the background then copied my city map overtop as a new layer.  Then I went in with the Eraser tool at about 25% opacity and started erasing sections of my city map.  Due to the opacity setting the wasteland map started to show through.  Some areas I just kept going over until all you could see is the wasteland and others (the city areas) I barely touched.

When I decided I wanted a canyon at the top I first turned my opacity on my eraser up to full and erased all the stuff that was there (street names and a pop out with a zoom in on downtown) so all that showed was the wasteland.  Then I grabbed a big brush and some back at low opacity again and started to cover it over.  I let small bits still show through for variety.

After this I went in with a bright green brush with like 10% Opacity and added the glowing green bits, then did the same with red.  I used things showing through on my wasteland map to guide this.  Then I went in with a line tool and added the walls to the 'cities'.  This looked a little too syntetic so then I brushed over them with a thin black.

Lastly found a font I liked, and added the words using the blending options to add a red 'outer glow'

Hope that makes sense.  I'm no photoshop expert and what I did was pretty simple and really turned out well.  Better then I expected.

Nice material.  I don't know how Wind Soar slipped past me.  I'll add this locale to the GW COmmunity Atlas asap!
