City Guard Chapterhouse

A large, imposing stone building built into the walls of the palace. Men and women wearing the uniforms of the City Guard patrol the streets nearby, and several more stand at the open double-door that leads inside.

This is the chapterhouse of the order of the City Guard, a disciplined, organized force dedicated to keeping the peace in our fair city.

This heavily fortified building houses the barracks and command center of the order, with cells below for detaining criminals.

Those wishing to apply to join the City Guard should do so at the inquiry desk - one of the staff will be happy to help you. Any questions about the guard should be directed to the same place.

Rank and Advancement Policies: The Ranks are determined by the color of the trim on a Guard's black cloak.

The Ranks and color trim:

Enlisted:

  • Private - White
  • Corporal - Brown
  • Sergeant - Green
  • Inspector - Green with Red

Officers:
  • Lieutenant - Red
  • Captain - Silver
  • Captain-General - Gold

To achieve the rank of corporal a private needs to serve a set amount of time and be able to read and write. Sargeant requires a longer, untarnished service record.

Officers are promoted from the enlisted ranks or by noble decree from one of the Lords, as long as they meet the qualifications:
  • Literacy,
  • Competent to ride a horse in combat, and either
  • Knowledge of heraldry or some form of higher education from the scholars guild.

Advancement from there on is based on time in with good standing.

Benefits: All members of the guard will be issued a club or staff, small shield, guard cloak and tunic, and leather armor, as well as free room and board within the guard barracks. Footmen will also be issued either a short or long sword, while a light crossbow is given the crossbowmen.

(This is the first Chapterhouse thread to appear on this board. For the previous thread, check here.)

Bedne, Brodda, and Shad creep to the guardhouse just in time to see the night watch leave for their posts. A few of the off duty guards are out chatting with one-another, and engaging others in thier conversations.

Shad: Perfect timing. I'd say we have 10 minutes tops, though, unless you can go in and distract them somehow. Ten might be enough, but I've got to pick the lock on the window and the safe. That could take more time than we want.

*Brodda studies the chatty guards*

*She turns to the boys and grins*

"A distrrraction, eh?"

*She chuckles and pulls her recorder from her belt loop, puts it to her lips, and begins to play a soft, lulling tune, then strolls towards the guards, looking to all the world like she's just passing by as she plays her song.*

[Bardic Music: Fascinate +8]

*She slows a bit as she approaches the guards, pausing, her eyes twinkling in a playful manner as she attempts to bring the guards' attention under her control.*

The guards, already in a jovial mood, fall prey easily to Brodda's music while Shad sneaks to the side of the building and Bedne slinks off into the shadows. Several minutes go by with no news from Shad.

*Brodda, intent on her music, isn't aware of the passing time. She is a bard, after all, and music and stories are in her soul. As she plays, she dances with the guards, her eyes flirting with them.*

Brodda's music is exceptional tonight, and the night itself doesn't hurt. It's been warmer today than most days of late, and so tonight's air represents a pleasant change.

All of this might account for the fact that despite having to play for nearly 25 minutes at a stretch while stringently maintaining her concentration, Brodda has spare energy to feel quite proud of her efforts, even while still playing the flute.

She sees Shad slip into the shadows and begins to wind her playing down. The guard has surrounded her and most guardsmen are standing or even sitting, listening intently to her music. A few of them flirt back, although they are obviously embarrassed about doing so.

*Noting that her job here is finished, she inwardly sighs sadly, as this has been the most fun she's had in a while. She begins to bring the music to a close, slowing down the tempo and the dancing. When it reaches the appropriate rythm, she curtsies low and nods her head in thanks and, forging her way through the ring of men, heads on down the street, still playing.*

.oO(That went as well as Ah coould have hoped!) :D

*When she judges that she has made sufficient distance between her position and the guards, she brings the volume down slowly to silence, then circles around, careful to avoid any wandering guards, and meets again with Shad and Bedne, grinning.*

*Whispering*
"How did it go, lad?"

*Brodda and the brothers enter the chapterhouse with prisoner in tow. By now, Brodda is familiar with this particular clerk, who looks at her questioningly seeing the troupe with her. Brodda approaches the desk and smiles.*

"Good morrnin' to yeh! Ah've got a prresent ferr yeh!"

"See this man? He's a murrderrerr and extorrtionist. Doctorr Frries Chandl frrom the Lawyerr's Guild will see teh filing charrges against him."

*The clerk rings a bell on the desk and soon Mercer is hauled away after being released from Bedne's chain. Brodda and the brothers head for the door and almost reach it when Brodda calls back...*

Kelly prepares to leave the Chapterhouse, putting on her chainmail, sliding her throwing axes into her belt, and grabbing her staff.

On the way out, she nods to the sergeant in front, and heads out on patrol.

(Earlier today, around noonish)

Kelly returns to the Chapterhouse from her latenight/morning patrol, and goes to bed for a few hours, to get some sleep before her next patrol.

(Now.)

When Kelly wakes up, she performs some stretches, and goes out into the nearly-empty practice field (since it is nighttime), and practices with her staff. She decides to bypass her normal axe-throwing practice, as she doesn't want to make too much noise. For nearly a full half-hour, there's little sound in the practice field but the slight whistling of her staff, as she goes through her practice routines, staff whirling, in constant motion. Finally, panting and sweaty, she stops her practicing.

She grabs a quick bite to eat in the mess hall, left out for those who have night duty, then puts on her chain shirt, grabs her axes and cloak, and heads out of the Chapterhouse to patrol.

Kelly reenters the Chapterhouse, and immediately heads out to the practice field. Ignoring the others located there, she heads to one side of the field. She removes her chain shirt, and drops it and her cloak onto the ground, before taking up her staff and moving to an unoccupied area to begin practicing furiously with her staff.

Kelly tries to ignore her thoughts as she pours all her energy into the practice routines of her fighting style, feinting and spinning, stabbing, spear-like, or twisting her staff rapidly around to smash imaginary opponent's limbs and bones.

A document is tossed onto the lieutenant's desk. He looks up at the captain, then reads it.

And reads it again.

And again - very carefully.

Stunned, his mind struggles to comprehend,
.oO(Why are you causing trouble for Sir Hermy Woodhome? Sir Hermy Woodhome has powerful friends...)

"Does this mean what I think it does, sir?" he asks.

"Yes, it does," the captain replies. "I'd pack quickly, if I was you."

"I still need to find someone to handle the animals. I'm not qualified."

"I know. I've seen you with horses."

"Har har, sir. May the desert be less dry than your sense of humour."

"You're going into the western desert? I hope you're bringing a decent guide as well, then. Finding water isn't going to be easy."

"I'm sure they've thought this through."

Captain Hunter arches an eyebrow.

"Well, sir, it's not like the halfling knight is in charge. Other members of that guild are going along. They tend to be more level-headed."

"And yet they've got him as a member."

"Mr. Haldar seemed to believe halflings were lucky. If half the stories I've heard about this one are right, he may have had a point."

The captain shrugs.

"Well, sir, it looks like I shall have to pack. Shouldn't take long. I mean, I'm nearly ready to go right now, as it is."

Hunter shakes his head.

"You can't wear the uniform," he says. "Besides, you'll want more appropriate travelling clothes anyway. You'll need something you won't bake in, and something to keep the sun off of your head. You'll also want to pack an extra blanket or two - it gets cold out there at night. Since you're going on Lord Malifaeyr's orders, there shouldn't be any trouble letting you use the armor and the weapons issued to you, and you can draw a pack and waterskin from stores. Anything else, though, comes from your funds - or theirs."

Gerug nods.

"Very good, sir. Thank you. I'll start at once. Excuse me."

The dwarf weaves his way out of the room, past the waiting halfling.

"I shall be back shortly," he says over his shoulder, "-just a few last minute matters to attend to."

Last minutes run to three hours before he returns, carrying several layers of fabric, followed by a thin, but stil healthy, man who looks to be in his early fifties.

"Sir Hermy Woodhome, meet Farquar. He'll be...ahem... 'assisting' me-" Gerug looks sheepishly at the man, who lets the comment pass, "- in caring for the animals."

Farquar bows to the halfling, the hood on his pale yellow robe flipping up over his head. He absentmindedly knocks it away as he straightens up.

"It will be an honor to serve you, milord," he says gravely.

"Wonderful," says Gerug with a grin. "Now, if you'll both excuse me, I shall get ready. I won't be long."

Less than fifteen minutes later, the dwarf returns, wearing his armor and a hooded, tan cloak. His head is covered in a loosely (and inexpertly) tied kerchief. His belt holds two pouches, his waterskin, and a sheathed sword.

Gerug struggles a bit to get his pack secured, then smiles.

"All set! No, wait, there's one more item..."

He bounds up the stairs, then returns with his staff.

"Now I am ready to go," he declares, and lets the halfling guide the way to their next destination. Farquar grunts, then follows.

Finishing up, he then reviews his gear, and is satisfied that his pack will withstand this trip. The dwarf still has a bit of trouble with the headdress.

.oO(Well, leave it for now... good to get the practice in before we hit the desert anyway, I'm sure. And it's still a headcovering, even if it doesn't look right.)

As he takes up his arms once more, he looks at the shield he was issued. He ponders.

.oO(Hmm... no, it will only weigh me down. Besides, I'd rather use the staff. Oh, well!)

Off he goes then, first to acquire Farquar, and thence to the Guild which so desperately needs his services.

"Ah... water... plentiful water..."

Donning a clean shirt and cape, he returns to his post, reviewing recent events with Captain Hunter. Key among the things he learns is of concerns at the palace.

"If you think the extra patrols could be necessary, sir, I'll see what I can do about a roster. It would allow them to concentrate on retraining."

"No, sir, I appreciate that. They can take care of that duty, but a second set of eyes won't hurt while they learn the ropes -- if we keep a low profile and keep them from taking the assistance for granted."

"I'll have to think about it, sir. Thank you."

Sadly Captain Hunter says there are none among them right now that would meet the standards that the Jackals require. OoC: We're rewinding a few weeks for this post.

Gerug ambles to the Captain's door in the early hours, knocking softly, entering when he is bid to do so. After a few pleasantries, and a discussion of business, the dwarf gets to the matter that brings him here.

"Sir, I am afraid I will require a leave of absence for a month, perhaps two."

"It's a matter of paying a debt, sir."

"No, sir, it's nothing like that. It relates to the favour performed for Sir Woodhome. There was an item that needed to be returned from the desert quickly, and the price for the passage was my service for a month."

"Very, sir. I have never crossed ground so quickly in all my life, and may I never have need to do so again."

"No, nothing like that. There was a... I don't know what she was, sir, but the lady had the body of a great cat, and the face of a woman. And wings. Very gracious, and very helpful she was, I thought, though there would be some disagreement on that point."

"Yes, sir, it is a high price, but there was a pressing need, and... I didn't have anything else to offer."

"Yes, sir, I understand."

"Eh? But-"

"No, I see."

"I- well, the debt must still be paid, sir."

"No, sir, I haven't forgotten my duty here. I just thought it was--"

"Yes, sir. That is what I mean."

"I see. Yes, sir, I understand. If it must come to that, then I shall accept whatever the Captain General decides when I return. Nevertheless, I still must go."

"I know, sir. I am sorry for disappointing you."

"I'll do what I can."

"Oh, you needn't worry on that score, sir. I've endured worse." :D

"And to you as well. Take care of yourself, Captain Hunter. I shall return to you when my other obligation is paid."

With a salute, he steps from the room, bringing most of his effect to the quartermaster, waiting until the man has inspected the sword and armor before returning to pack his few belongings.

Staff in hand, Gerug leaves the chapterhouse and, in short order, the safety of the city.

Turning, he calls down the hall to another guard.

"Is he going to die from his wounds?"

"Not at the moment. They might get infected, but I think he'll live for now."

He sank over.

"What's the last thing you remember...?" the imprisoned bard asked himself.

"That blasted bounty hunter betrayed me... And now the guard took my stuff..."

Brand Ravenkin. He replies.

Joseph was about to strike the final cord to a song when the mandolin vanished. The bard groaned.

The hours passed with nothing for him to do...

So he paced the room, checked every bar to see if it was lose, and eventually sat in a corner.

"Well, hello there!" says a dwarf, grinning as he opens the door to Joseph's cell.

"There now, you see, Bear?" he says to the large human guard standing behind him.

"This man couldn't have been playing music. There's nowhere for him to hide a lute or the like. You must have heard someone on the street. No matter. Give the fellow a hand up, if you would. You're very fortunate, young man--"

The dwarf pauses a second to allow himself a small, almost apologetic, grin.

"Normally it would be days before a magistrate was available to handle sentencing, but Mister Dempster was able to resolve another matter fairly quickly and has graciously offered to stay a little longer. Let's not keep him waiting, shall we?" :D

"Now, then, my smart-mouthed young friend, did you attempt to rob this man or shall we try you for attempted murder instead? What matters is that you acted, not that you were too inept to succeed in your act."

Dempster straightens his cuff before speaking again.

"If the tongue is of such value, I fail to see why there was a need to plunder a warehouse," Dempster says, and Gerug finds a rag for Joseph.

"In a case like this, I might issue a fine to cover the costs to the city and the injury to your victim. It does not seem likely that you could pay the fine, however -- at least not without winding up in front of me for trying this at a different warehouse.

"Therefore, the appropriate punishment, especially in light of its violent nature, would involve the removal of your hand."

Dempster impassively watches Joseph as Gerug pales slightly beside the bard. The larger guard displays no reaction to this sentence whatsoever.

"I don't suppose we could make a trade?" the bard began.

"You take my hand today, when I complete the assignment, you pay to get it restored. Surely there is some element in the city that your guard can't get into... but a man mutilated by the courts... Who would accuse me of being in league with you. And you invest nothing now. If I don't come through, you've lost nothing, and I'm out a hand. Beginning of Joseph's Lament
Once upon the city's past,
There came a man that wouldn't last.
To be famous for his mandolin,
And too the fights the he would win,
. Joseph the Bard he was to be,
. But Fate denied his fantasy.

Everything seemed to go so well,
Which was the omen he did not tell.
He drank and played, and flirted lots,
And never thought his luck would stop.
. It seemed to only soar and sail.
. But life is just a balanced scale.

Brought down by his own greed,
Now faced with mines of eternity.
Joseph alone, not even a friend,
No one to help; what can he mend?
. Despite the distance he had come,
. His time is up, this bard is done.

After several hours, a meal, and all the ale he chose to stomach, Joseph is led out behind the guardhouse by Gerug and two others. There, two others awaits him by the forge, the larger of the two testing a very sharp axe.

"Put your sword hand on the block," the axeman tells Joseph, indicating a large wooden block nearby, "and don't move. You don't want me to miss; believe me."

A smaller, older man looks on from the left of the axeman, and mutters something unintellligible.

While replacing his cloak with the guard's he answers, "Well I haven't been in the city that long. For the last few days I have been living at Nobody's Inn."

"You need to relax your grip a bit there," Dravenous hears Gerug say to him from his left. "If you hold it too tight, you've committed your hand, and it won't allow you to adjust to an opening or to parry an attack as easily.

"Here... no, loosen a bit. That's good, but maybe just try holding it here. Let the guard work for you. Okay, now, as for the shield, you're going to tire your arm out like that. Closer to your body, which is what you're trying to protect anyway. Right, like that, but drop the shoulder a bit. Good! Right over the heart. It's fine to shift it to block a swing at your head, but you do a better job of protecting your legs by moving them out of the way. :D

"Okay, let's try this again, shall we? For now, you focus on defense, but once we're satisfied with that, I'll go get my own shield and you can try turning the tables on me."

Dravenous' nap took a while longer than he had expected, but it just didn't seem to be long enough. Walking through the compound the guardsmen gathers parchment on with to write his report. Wasting no more time Dravenous begins to recall and write.

Report on the investigation into the location of the secret lair of the Halfling robber.

Investigations started with the bounty hunter, Brand, leading the way toward an abandoned house in the slums. In that building there was an entrance into a tunnel that runs under the city. Farther down the tunnel the passageway met with three other tunnels. The bounty hunter said that he had passed through all of the tunnels and that tunnels led to a Halfling bathhouse, the marketplace, and the third was blocked off by a large boulder. After inspecting the boulder it was found that it was not a natural part of the tunnel. Unfortunately further inspection did not allow for location of a device which would remove the obstacle.

The entrance to the bathhouse was then investigated. It was discovered that the door would no longer open. After some attempts to break in, a voice declared behind the door that we would not be let in. Deciding that further attempts to get in through this entrance would be futile and that anyone behind the door would be too frightened to open the door the bounty hunter led the way out of the tunnels and then toward the main entrance of the bathhouse.

The female Halfling that answered the door reacted angrily toward the bounty hunter and the bounty hunter argued with the woman.

Apparently while he was hunting the Halfling thief he had broken into the bathhouse through both the tunnel entrance and the main entrance. The woman demanded the immediate arrest of the bounty hunter. The woman was promised that her case would be taken care of as soon as the current investigation was finished.

(Additional notes on claim involving the bounty hunter, Brand, and the Halfling bathhouse [Name Unknown] at bottom of report.)

Once the woman had calmed down she was questioned about what she knew about the tunnel. She said that she had not known of anyone that had used the tunnel recently, but she did say that several years ago those at the bathhouse had used the tunnel to escape some attackers some of whom were corrupt guardsmen. Although she seemed to be withholding information questioning was stopped with the hope that she might decide to talk more at later time.

It was decided that further investigation of the blocked tunnel was necessary. The path of the tunnel was tracked over ground to find the tunnel exit. The path left the city near the southwest gate of the city and after one hour of walking the path ended near a river. Tracks were found and they led to a hill with large rocks. It was then found that two rocks were placed there to cover passageways. After searching one a lever was discovered and pulled which removed the boulder, revealed a cavern, and activated a bladed pendulum trap.

Inside there was a pile of rotten food which covered a dead body with a gold necklace and a signet ring, about twenty purses most of which contained a few silver pieces although a few were filled with gold coins and two had gemstones. Also in the pile several knives were found, some of which were made exceptionally well.

A fire pit in the center of the cave concealed a trap door which was trapped with a spring. Below it was a twenty foot pit with a rotting ladder. Using a rope the bounty hunter climbed down and found that it lead to a storeroom with many barrels and crates, all with a depiction of a hare and a turtle circling each other, which was also the insignia on the body's signet ring. At least one barrel contained Elfish wine and a small crate was filled with chocolate.

The body and all items found with the body were taken, but all items in the storage room were left alone. The trap door was closed, but the trap was not reactivated. The rock that had covered the entrance was moved back. This may or may not have reset the pendulum trap. It was assumed that the second boulder concealed the tunnel that led us here, but it was not examined any further. All items were taken back to the city and then the chapterhouse.

Claim against bounty hunter, Brand: Whether or not his breaking into the bathhouse was permitted due to his trying to find the Halfling thief is unknown and should be the subject of further investigations, but his assistance throughout this case has been extremely helpful, including his helping me when I was seriously injured by the trapped trapdoor. And that should be taken into account for any punishment, if any, he might receive.

- Private Dravenous

Glad to have that out of the way the expert relaxes his body as his mind worrys about Brand's fate.

.oO(I hope everything turns out fine with him.)

Dravenous quickly turns in the report and as he walks back to his bunk to rest he lets out a small sigh as he says quietly, "I wonder how good that chocolate was..."

"And I've been informed by my suoperiors not to look into it anymore."

Captain Hunter pauses his pacing again and looks at both of the seated men.

"It has also been... requested... that the two of you be asked not to comment on finding Schellinsinger there. Or the stored wares."

"It has been arranged for the charges from the halflings running the bath house to be dropped against you Mr. Ravenkind."

"And the Schellinsingers have also arranged a bit of a reward for the two of you for recovering the body of their son."

He looks at Dravenous. "Normally, accepting a reward for doing your duty is frowned upon Private."

Finally Hunter sits down behind his desk.

"As for the reward," he opens a drawer in his desk and sets several items out on top of it.

"You will each receive one of the knives that were recovered. They've been tested. Neither is magical but both are finely balanced daggers. I'm not sure if either of you are skilled in throwing, but if you are you should appreciate the craftsmanship in these."(Masterwork Daggers)

"In addition, a bar of chocolate for both of you. The Schellinsingers are famous for the chocolate they import. If you don't choose to eat this yourself, I'm sure you can find someone who will."

"There will alsbe a bottle of fine elven wine for each of you as you leave the guardhouse. How and when you choose to distribute it is up too you. As long as it's not on duty private."

"And finally a bit of monetary compinsation."
Hunter stops and looks at each of them before continuing.

"For your efforts."

The captain places two purses on the desk next to the daggers and chocolate.

"You'll find each one of these contains 50 gold coins."

"Be careful how you spend it. Drawing attention to your new found wealth might not be advisable."

"But I'm sure you were already aware of that."

Captain Hunter stands up and reaches over the desk and offers his hand for a shake. "My thanks go out to you gentleman. For your hard effort."

"And your co-operation in this delicate matter."

Quickly making his way to the front desk Dravenous almost trips over his feet a few times.

When standing in front of his commander he says,
"Sir, I wish to report some suspicious activities."

After seeing that he has the attention of the person behind the desk he continues, "I saw a nervous man dragging a oddly shaped bag into an empty warehouse, where another man was guarding the door."

"When I got close to the door I heard them talking about smuggling items and the first man sounded frightened that someone named 'Sarge' would find out what they were doing."

"Also, I think there might have been more than two people in the building. So I decided to report my findings rather than confront them, Sir."

The desk officer asks Dravenous some more questions, noting the time and location of the activity.

"Well, if you're going to tail him, you'd better hustle."

"I see, I see," Gerug says to the out-of-breath guardsman, "but they've always seemed a fairly civil lot. Surely their parties can't be that... boisterous?"

He raises eyebrows at the reply.

"Indeed? Days? All right, we'll increase patrols in the quarter, but only for their own protection. Ye never know who might take it into their heads to cause trouble there just because they're a little bit shorter than the rest of--"

A sharp look crosses his desk as the guardsman looks ready to speak.

"If ye're about to correct me on that, ye might want to reconsider yer words."

The dwarf barely lets a grin slip, before it disappears as he continues to hear the report. Calmly, he tries to assauge the human's worst fears.

"All right, all right. I'm sure it won't be all that bad. What's the occasion anyway?"

He nearly falls out of his chair in the middle of the answer he receives.

"Wait a moment -- did y'say 'Woodhome'?"

Receiving a nod, he continues, "As in Hermy 'Dragon-Round-Every-Corner-Giants-in-the-Woodpile-Werewolf-on-the-Roof-Where's-the-Pie?' Woodhome?"

After a delicate pause, the lieutenant receives confirmation, and a further explanation.

"His long-lost father?!"

.oO(As if his brother's visits weren't trouble enough!)

The guardsman offers a few more words before there is quiet in the office. Gerug rests his forehead in his hands for a few moments and then sighs.

"I think... I shall have to pay a personal visit to these proceedings."

This earns him a chuckle an another question in response.

"No, not while I'm there -- that halfling will addle my brain enough without a drink in my gut. But once I'm done with it, the Last Lich Inn had better put a few tankards aside for me.

"Thank you. That will be all. Have Corporal T- no, on second thought, I'll tell her myself. Go grab yerself some dinner."

The guard salutes, causing the dwarf to rock to his feet in order to return it before the man departs, closing the door behind him.

Once he is truly alone, the dwarf sags for a moment.

"What will it be this time?"

Suddenly, a new thought crosses his mind, which seems to cheer him considerably.

"Well, at least there'll be good eating first." :D

With a chuckle, he leaves the room, preparing for the 'inevitable' storm -- and the feast -- ahead.

"All right, Corporal Plaut," he calls back. "I'll look at the records after I get back. Just leave them on my desk."

From outside, one cannot make out what the corporal is saying, but the dwarf's half of the conversation is clear enough.

"No, look, if treasure hunters are going to insist on strolling through the sewers as if it was Thalos Park, I'm not making them my problem. What makes ye think I'd want to go down there after them?"

"Yes, okay, so I am, but that doesn't mean I like spending time wading through water up to my waist. Anyone who wants to spend their free time down there in search of 'lost treasure' is on their own, as far as I'm concerned."

"Oh, ye're clever, Plaut -- devious, even -- but I'm not falling for it. Pull out the half-orc's map while you're up there; it's in the top drawer. Take a look at his little notes and ye'll see why I'd rather stay up here now. I've had my share of fighting haunts on the streets and done my duty when things came out of the sewers and after folk, but if people want to go looking for trouble down their of their own accord, they're welcome to it!"

"We'll discuss it when I get back, all right?"

"I shouldn't be more than two hours--"

"--unless yer jabbering keeps me much longer. You know how delays go... five minutes becomes an hour, two hours becomes..."

"Yes, I thought you'd see it my way. :D See you when I get back, Corporal."

And whistling with neither tune nor key to guide him, the lieutenant sets out at a leisurely pace, grateful for the excuse to finally stretch his legs again.

As the In-need-of-time-off dwarf heads off down the street. A young, freshly recruited gaurdsman, steps from the corner of the building where he was listening in and follows in the Corporal.

Corporal Plaut.oO(Who's this one then?) "May I help you? You aren't supposed to be on watch in the area are you? Private..???"

Stollsteer"Private Stollsteer sir, No I am on the nightwalk this evening. I just thought I would come in a little early and map out my route, seeing as I'm new around here and all. I was hoping to get a good feel for the area so I wouldn't be wasting time on making sure I wasn't off track."

Corporal Plaut."Stollsteer huh? Well.. that is a very responsable approach I would think. Well while I have you, Take these papers up to Lt. Gerugs office, and these and these."he says pointing to three larges stacks of paperwork.
Here is the key to his office, return it when you are through and then you can see about those maps, now if you'll excuse me."
The Corporal give the young man a once over and the key, then heads off for some more paper work, repeating the name to himself a few times.

The young private smiles and nods, giving Plaut a slight wave. Once he is Upstairs he locates the map he over heard the dwarf speak of in Gerug's office. He pulls a paper and charcoal out of his vest and begins to copy it. In moments with quick but percise strokes he has his own copy with notes. He smiles to himself and placing the map back he exits swiftly. He finishes doing the 'chore' set to him and returns the key.

Stollsteer"Done sir, now, if I may, I'll have a look at that map." he adds cheerily with a smile.

Corporal Plaut"Yes, very good Private..." says the man, not really looking up from his papers as he takes back the key. With a wave he gives Stollsteer leave and continues with his work. The young private fiddles with the maps for a moment and then exits swiftly.

A few moments later Plaut come walking back into the room with a skeptical look. He searches but does not find the young 'private' anywhere.

Corporal Plaut"Damn! I should have known.. No Stollsteer on the nightwatch or on anything!... "

He sits, contemplating whether or not he should tell his Dwarven supervisor what had occured on his own watch.

"...though that may not mean much to you folks out here. Irregardless, I have had experience as a gate watch defending my village from outsiders who meant ill, as well as from a few invaders of a more ... unnatural quality."

"Hello. I'm sorry for the delay. I was somewhat side-tracked."

"Not too much trouble. Not yet anyways."

Leo recounts the past few hours, beginning at his chance encounter with Neb and Nanashi at Nobody's and describing the search for and recovery of Had.

"I tried to avoid any deaths, but I'm afraid there were casualties among Gobi's gang. Another thing bothered me: Marroc seemed to take an unusual interest in finding Had. Perhaps it was just neighbourly concern, but I thought I should tell you. You asked me to meet Marroc and give you my impression of him. He's an odd halfling, keeping an establishment like Nobody's. I would be suspicious of him if he had given me any indication of being deserving of it, but he didn't. If he's doing anything illegal, he seems to be the type that's very good at hiding it."

"Huh," Gerug says. After a pause to put his thoughts together, he continues, "I'll need ye to take a few men out to where ye had the fight, as well as where they kept the kidnapped man. We'll have to talk to these Neb and Nanashi characters ye've mentioned as well. It might be best if you mentioned that to them yerself, so we can avoid a scene. I'm not lookin' to create trouble for them or for Marroc over this, but at least a few of those kidnappers are still at large."

The chapterhouse is as forbidding as it ever was. It was probably not meant to invite the citizenry in on a whim. Still, once inside there's a desk with a business-like elderly woman who looks up expectantly whenever someone enters. Clearly visitors are supposed to inform her of the purpose of their visit.

The day draws to a close when the trio arrives at the city watch. The torches inside the archway that leads to the door are already lit, their flickering flames producing a display of light and shadow inside the arch, adding to the forbidding feel of the structure. "Good evening, all of you, and thank you for coming."

Commander Halvarsdottir is a middle-aged woman with a greying hair in a tight bun, piercing blue eyes and a resolute, energetic expression.

"A few nights ago you came to the aid of my Zohrina and one of my young men of the watch when they got in a tight spot. For this, I wish to extend my gratitude to you personally."

She smiles warmly when she says this.

"But also, one of my sergeants reported you handled the situation admirably and expressed a willingness to assist the Watch. This is of course not possible for matters that fall under our normal jurisdiction, but we recently have something on our hands we are not well-suited to handle: it involves the use of magic, and as you may know we simply don't have any capable mages among our ranks. Normally we defer entirely to the Hightower in these matters, but the incidents so far are quite petty and the wizards let us know they have no time for this. They did send an apprentice who took maybe an hour out of his precious time, didn't come up with anything useful and made himself scarce again.

However, while the magic involved may be petty and harmless, the incidents have repeated themselves a handful of times that we know of already, and I would like to get to the bottom of this. Sergeant Flint mentioned magic is not unknown to you, and your superiors were gracious enough to grant my request that you could be detached to the Watch for the duration of the investigation.

All this on the condition that you agree to this, of course - I do not wish to have you do this against your will."

As predicted by the sergeant, the trio can't really go wrong: a loud din is coming from a room halfway down the corridor. Laughing and yelling, but also curses and angry comments: the guards are letting of steam after a long day and the watch won't content themselves just listening. There's no door, just a wide opening in the middle of the room's long wall.

The room itself is barely large enough to contain everyone present, and this combined with the roaring fireplaces on either end makes for sweltering temperatures. A thin stew is bubbling away in large cauldrons, chipped bowls and woorden spoons placed nearby.

"Evening, gents. So the commander took you up on your offer after all, eh? That's good, that's good. It's an ugly piece of business, that, and we don't have anyone good enough with magic to make sense of it.

Right, details. Well, we know of six incidents so far. They all involve a small animal being killed and drained of blood, with a number of symbols scribbled around the corpse. There's some magical aura of what's it hanging over it, according to that Hightower mage, but he said it's too weak to mean anything. Not that I trust that one to do a thorough job of anything, but...

Anyway, we're trying to find people who have seen or heard something, but nobody's talking so far. Figures. The locations are all over the map, from the dodgy parts of town we don't send the rookies to to the posh streets that have their own guards. The first one found happened about four weeks ago, fas as we can tell. We didn't think too much of it until the third one, when we realized we were probably going to keep on finding them.

The healer is a dour-looking half-elf named Alvaran. He doesn't say much beyond minute directions to hold an arm so-and-so or stop yelping at every pinch. However, he's quite efficient and works fast. Moreover, this leaves the entire conversation open to the deputised Silver Swords and the lieutenant, who by now has introduced himself as Daniel.

"Right. So let's clear up a few things. What happened, exactly?"

"We had recently left the Ravendale estate, the scene of a crime we were investigating, when we noticed a group of men following us. It seemed best at the time to confront the group, as they did not seem particularly well equipped, so we lured them somewhere deserted to avoid civilian injuries, should things go bad. At that point, the group declined discussion and assaulted the three of us, along with a second group of hidden followers in that alley."

"Unfortunately, as they possessed a mage amongst their number and outnumbered our team significantly, we were barely able to hold them off, if not for the assistance of a stranger, I fear we would be dead by now. In any case, the majority of them were wounded beyond capture, and our mysterious benefactor fled the scene."

"Would the Watch be able to identify any of the dead or captive? From what they said, it seems the attack relates to our investigation, and the attackers each bore tattoos."

"Luring them away is good. I'll make mention of it in my report. A mysterious stranger came to your rescue? I'd play that down a bit. I'm not telling you to lie or anything, ok, but be sure to give a functional report, ok? Keep it simple, present the facts that are relevant, don't dwell on the rest. You understand my meaning?"

The implied meaning seems to be to not create complications for the Guard and stress the positives. The guard is funded by the city and has to rely on the good will of its officials. But the lieutenant is a career guardsman, the Silver Sword deputies may have to figure out for themselves how much this advice applies to them as well.

"We'll ask among the other guards and watchmen about the tattoos and if they know who you were dealing with. A mage among them is both good and bad news. Bad because they don't come cheap, so this isn't a small matter for whoever sent him after you. Good because there's not many of 'em, and the Hightower keeps tabs on all who use arcane talents in the city. You should go and see what you can find out there. At the least you should get a name.

Bit of bad business with those tattoos though. I assume it's you that carved them out? Not a good image for the Watch, that. I'd play it careful with that. Remember what I said earlier."

"I'll have one of our more experienced people take a crack at sorting him out and making him more cooperative. We'll see how that pans out.

As for the Hightower, in cases like this where both the Guard and they have a claim on someone, whoever catches him first has first dibs. They'll be sentenced by the city and by the Tower on separate charges, if the wizards have charges to make of course, but we get the first shot in."

"Agathalos' and Ordemetrex' temples are the largest, but we could try another too," Zade says. "Most of them are fairly close to one another anyway, at least the ones that get along. Agathalos and Agametrex are probably best for healing."

Zade takes the lead and sets out towards the district around the great church of Agathalos.

There's a thread on the 2nd page for the Church of Agathalos you can use, as well as one for the temple of Ordemetrex. If you prefer one of the others, take it to Elsewhere.
