I figured that was what Sinterklaas was. I also know why December 25th is used. (Hint it was not baby jesus's birthday which was in spring) The Saint Nicolas legend is one I knew as well. But it really does amaze me how little so many of us yanks know... I have met univeristy students that didn't know anything about our Constitution and Bill of Rights.... (A really big deal here btw) I swear our public school system is determined to make the youth utterly ignorant.....Cwud... I'm ranting..... Sore spot of mine... I stop now....

Now if only it would go away.

Yeah I have to agree with you. The school system failed me... well... maybe I failed the school system. Either way...

*note to self: Look into these Black Pete's... they sound dangerous!*

I'm hoping we're able to homeschool our kids... at least through say middle school... not that I think public is inferior, but it would be nice to open their minds to more than is taught in a curriculum.

ANNNYWAY... sorry for my absense horse traders. I've been out of town.

Ok, I edited my post to include Thorik's shot. Won't happen again, I promise. I have something to do this evening and I'd rather wait for Stranger to make a post first, but if there's nothing there when I get home, I'll go ahead and post for him again.

Sweet. Thanks!

In my absence:

In a melee type fight, Thorik would most likely try to tumble into a flanking position. With his shield out and in use.

If the opponent isnt in melee with an ally, Thorik would throw a light hammer, and pull another one to have it ready.

If its over 20ft and he has a clear shot, he would shoot with his crossbow.

Or if all else fails just put him in full defense and call it good. But I'm usually not absent for long.

I'm going to be enjoy my first Sinterklaas today, as a matter of fact. Yay Netherlands.

I haven't lost interest, I swear: the power supply for my computer decided to commit horrible horrible suicide, so I'm having some issues getting onto the net. I hope to have it resolved asap, but this is just to let everyone know. I'd hate to miss the adventure but skip over me if you must. His actions will be simple: you were correct to assume he would see to the unarmed, probably ushering them behind the carriage though not within in case of trickery, then use his Bardic Song (in the form of storytelling, of course ;) ) If I get the chance I'll write up the story, but I'm afraid there isn't much else I can do. Nor do I have the time on this particular computer to jump in.

Here's hoping the power supply is fixed in short order.

Reposted from Ninth, having just noticed this thread.

No train today, on account of some technical defect. Had to wait for a bus for an hour, and it's freezing. -15°C (5°F) may be merely mildly bracing to some people here, I was about ready to keel over. I'll be thawing out in a hot bath for a little while.

It is a really cold night if the temp drops below 25 F here. Not sure where that is in C.... Curse of growing up in the US. I think it is nuts for us to use the Standard System. I'm good with distance and weight but tempeture not so much.

25°F is a little warmer than -4°C (not to worry, I had to look it up myself as well). That's about comparable to what we normally have, but this winter is apparently the worst in 10 years for us. It's less bad today already though, and I didn't have to wait for public transportation since my train ran on time. Much better.

I'm sorry for the slow pace, Arvindur. You're doing well so far though, if necessary I'll find a happy medium.

As you may have read, the Esteemed Collective of Wizards' Forums Gamemasters (yes, I just made that up) have been in touch about me becoming a Gamemaster for GsC - an offer I was glad to accept, of course. The ECWFG has Clout and I want a piece of that action. :D Ok, not so much but it'll be extremely helpful to be able to get some assistance from experienced folk, not to mention the occasional technical touch with stickying and (un)locking and such.

I also managed to arrange two weeks off from work starting the end of March, I'll be getting some more background info up then and see what I can think of to make the adventuring go smoother (working out a schedule that'll allow me to be around at more or less the same time as y'all would go a long ways in the right direction).

Has anyone else had extreme difficulty logging in?

Nothing extreme, Stranger. I did get the "scheduled maintenance" page a few times on unscheduled days, but never very long.

Has anyone else had extreme difficulty logging in?

I used to have trouble. And, of all things, my bookmark was the problem. Does your bookmark point to forums.wizards.com by any chance? If so, try editing it to point to forums.gleemax.com instead and see if that resolves your problem. For some reason or other, WotC has a weird glitch in the redirect that prevents the login cookie from working correctly.

Hey. Just dropping by with a few questions.

I'm part of the new GM team over at the Map of the Planes, and I was browsing through the forums today and found you guys over here...

Do you what, if anything, is the difference between Garic's City and the Map of the Planes? They both seem like an open free-form forum, and I can't for the life of me determine if they're the same or not.

Either way, if you guys plan on trying to revitalize your forum (like we are in the process of doing), drop me a line. Maybe we both have ideas the other could benefit from. Additionally, I suspect players from one might fit quite well into the other...something to think about, at least.

It was a little unfair of me to put it like that, honestly. For one because I couldn't post last Friday and for another because the weekend is when everyone in Garic's catches up on their naps, I noticed. :P So, no apologies necessary. I expect things will pick up again if and when we get to the meatier parts of the respective adventures. I realize I may be taking things a little slowly in getting there.

Garic's City takes place in a city (Garic) and the surrounding environs. Map of the Planes seems to be a bit more widespread than that.

That said, there's a lot of overlap between the various play-by-post forums.

Thanks for the input, Zherog. I've already sent Gideon a PM as well.

The main thing though is that GsC is not free-form and not truly open. It's not diceless either, despite the current description. GsC follows core 3.5 rules (with a fair number of houserules), characters have to get approved before play and dice are rolled to adjudicate events (it's just that in GsC, the DMs roll all the dice, including making rolls for the players).

The MotP is arguably closer to the CoF than to GsC and GsC is definitely closer to Real Adventures or PbP Heaven, albeit restricted to a single system and setting.

We can certainly work to correct the forum description. Feel free to write a new one (keeping it about the same length as the other forum descriptions) and then post to the VCL thread. Crazy_monkey can submit the request to Community Management, which should give you a more accurate description on the front page.

Several of you have offered to help out with stuff in the background, if something were to come up. I've been reposting the info thread and, lo and behold, things did come up. Well, they're things I've been looking at myself already, but I thought it'd be fun if we could make a group project out of them.

The Religion post on the info thread has a pantheon of GsC deities. This is nice, but it's improbable that these gods are completely the same across all races. This has been hinted at in the info already, but I'd like to put in some more racial variation. So, some races might have different names for some of the gods. Some might have one or two more, or one or two less. It shouldn't be too drastic (remember that in D&D gods are rather more close to the world than in RL), but some more racially specific details would be welcome.

Some races may also have organised themselves, especially the ones that lean towards the lawful side. The halflings have their own Quarter in Garic's and take care of their own as a community, without explicit rules, but for others that might not work so well. I'd love to hear about ideas for councils, boards, or even unwritten rules or bullying tyrants.

These are not urgent, so if you're interested you can take your time. If you are willing to cook something up though, please let me know. That way I'll know what I can move to my personal back burner and what should go a little higher on my to-do list.

I'd be happy to tackle religion if I know what races you had in mind and if you could point to a thread where I can get some good NPC or PC examples of their culture. It would likely take a bit of reading, but I'm sure I can cook something up in a week or two.

Any of them in fact. For starters, what do druids worship? I don't think it was ever defined.

Gerin: 'tongue' is indeed not spelled 'tounge', as you rightly surmized.

Actually, I leave all of that wide open, unless you really feel there's nothing you can do that way. Racial cultures are on the whole what you can find in the PHB and/or MM, although individual groups may differ in certain aspects (PC Pangur came from a group of gnome desert tribes, much like the Tarq aside from being gnomes, for instance, and the Tarthenen have several half-orc families - these specific cultures are superimposed on regular racial qualities). You are free to embellish and develop that in any way you choose.

It doesn't have to be a whole lot either (although it can be, it's up to you): an alternate name or even just a nickname for a couple of the gods or maybe a slight change in portfolio, or the way dwarves or gnomes choose to be represented in the city, etc. If you want to take a stab at the religion issue, you don't have to cover the entire pantheon in detail for all races (the list as is, which we'll assume applies to humans in GsC, will remain the larger part of any race's pantheon in any case). I'm looking for tidbits mostly, details to enhance the setting and background, not an entirely new cosmology. ;)

It can also be something I haven't mentioned, like a union for the river wharf workers (not that there's such a large number of them) or a developing a cult for one of the gods. The two I did mention are higher up on my list for now, but anything is welcome.

Believe you me, I intend to keep bugging you myself. :P

On another note: it'd be nice to attract more players, that would give us a more lively community and make it easier for you, the players, to roleplay without as much DM intervention. I've changed my signature to advertise our existence for that reason. Sigs are personal and I won't mind at all if you prefer not to do the same, but anything you could do to bring in new players (short of press ganging! No twisted arms, if you please! ;) ) will be very much appreciated.

Ready Entangle to cast if they look like doing anything besides chatting amiably with us.

Don't blame your Cha, but it's about to become clear chatting amiably isn't in the cards. All the more reason I'd much prefer Dorian and/or Zade to be present, but it doesn't look like that'll be the case. It's a whopper alright. I really feel you should be able to choose a smaller radius if you want to, but that's neither here nor there.

Well, a year and a half later, and I finally have internet at home. Anything change while I was gone?

I don't envy you - holy withdrawal symptoms, Batman!

As for change, a whole lot changed but the essential parts are still the same. Still 3.5, with the same houserules as before, still the same setting, Garic's after ST moved it forward a quarter century. Perhaps most importantly, still some of the old players (although we've been sadly reduced).

All the other old fogeys hands kept their old characters, it's our preferred option really. If you would prefer a new char that's an option too though, but at level 1 obviously. Character info is still available in the stickied Important Thread Index. Arvindur, you're stretching the limits of my rules-savvy...

Heh, sorry about that, was planning the leaping charge from the start since I laid the Entangle down, just didn't think it was THIS critical.:P

The wizard had unholy luck was all, as I understood it, a string of lucky casts kept him alive and highly damaging, or my summoned monster would have kept him depressed long enough for us to clear out the three thugs and then engage him.

Or we could have focused fire on the wizard the minute he casted the first spell, that bit's my bad, shouldn't have waited so long to pull the leaping charge.:P

If I gauged this right(given how long it took to take a thug down), the encounter is supposed to be just hard ,but not lethal.

Seems Intimidate factors only go so far.

Being a wee ickle halfling doesn't do you any good in that regard. :P

I know it's frustrating not getting any more out of him, but the others likely wouldn't have done any better. And it's not like you didn't get anything at all (not to mention a nice big chunk of XP). :D

I was going to start adding to the background info when May came around and we're the 4th today, so whenever I'll have time this week I'll try to get some work done in that regard. This means any contributions any of you have would be handy right about now.

#230

Pangur

May 13, 2009 16:08:34
I wouldn't call it a failure - a memorable performance is pretty darn good by any standard - but with decent rolls you'd have ended up a category higher. If it's any consolation, had these been the rolls for Arvindur's last combat encounter he'd be looking at a fresh char sheet now and I'd have some bad news for Zade and Dorian if/when they pop up again.

I started with a performance roll for you and had the others' rolls modify that. Not simply +2 for a successful Aid Another, but +1-5 for successful performances and -1-5 for failed ones, to represent the audience being captivated/losing interest during each part.
#231

a_stranger_dup

May 13, 2009 16:12:59
Oh, I figured as much. I'm honestly very happy with the result. Too much success too early would probably go straight to Stranger's head anyways.

I like that system. Very nice. That could have been enormous, too.
#232

Pangur

May 13, 2009 16:51:22
It could have been, but extremes are unlikely: appropriate DCs take care of that (those went up with favourable results and down with unfavourable ones). That's one of the problems with Aid Another: it's too easy under certain circumstances. The other is that it's not always correct that just throwing more manpower at it can theoretically let you achieve incredible DCs.

Anywho, I got my lunch ready for tomorrow so I'm off to bed. Early morning coming up again. G'night, everyone.

Ouch. Sorry to hear that, Pangur.

Since the company was taken over by HP, things have been going downhill. No fears for my job yet, but if we become unable to deliver quality service (we're an IT service provider after all) the entire company is going to go under eventually. Which might be what HP wants, if I'm being very cynical, since that would let them start over with their own surplus employees instead of us. I'm not really worried, I should be able to find another job soon enough if it comes to that, but it's a bad situation. I'd rather continue with the colleagues I have now.

But that's enough lamenting. No kvetching about work during the weekend. :D

By the way, how is the food being distributed in the noble tent? Trays and from a table that the servants go to, or a kitchen tent?

There are several tents, each has one or more tables with a variety of foods on it and one or more servants to do the necessary slicing etc. Drinks are being brought round and empty plates and such are being collected continuously, but food isn't carried around (unless if a guest asks for it). There are all sorts of things, but the selection was made with portability and ease of eating in mind. There's also one tent that specializes in fine wines (the one Malic went into first).

Everything is replenished from a kitchen tent, but the guests don't have any business there. You could go and take a look if you want, but beware stressed-out master cooks and overworked scullions. ;)

What with the current situation at work I'll likely be unable to post from there, except maybe during my lunch (if there'll be time for that ), but I don't think I've been able to do a lot of, posting from there the mast month or so anyway. We'll see how it goes.

May 24, 2009 15:58:28
Heh, well, I have seen a pentagram missing a 5th point(Hexa and up doesn't work since it'd be badly lopsided, squares are skewed, triangles work but give no useful information, plus they're still kinda lopsided, while nonstandard geometries are so varied as to be meaningless when deciphering) from the start, but the two inner sacrifices threw me off the scent.

Until the more recent realisation that we could have just missed some. And that there would of course be a second circle, as suitable for greater works.

Not a great week in terms of progress, but that's mostly my bad. Late shifts don't agree with my most efficient biorhythm. Should be better the next few weeks.

Arvindur and Satyre, I hope I didn't keep you waiting - I didn't think to post to make sure you'd know nothing happened on the way to the guild house.

This goes for everyone else as well, of course: if you ever get the feeling I forgot to make an update for you, please don't hesitate to remind me. Unless I specifically announce otherwise, adventures should never go 24 hours without an update from me.

Hope everyone likes it. I intend to make a number of other base 20 level classes for Garic's City as well, with my next project focusing on a more plant focused Druid type of class. If anyone can think of something they would like to see (or wished you could do something not supported by the base books), by all means PM me or put those suggestions here.

I'll probably work on an Avowed PrC as well, once I read up on them a little more.

The combined monthly post count of everyone active in Garic's at the moment probably pales compared to my personal daily post count back in the day. And I wasn't even the most productive poster here. Nowadays, we're all of us quiet ones. ;) It is what it is. There's too few of us to make it worthwhile doing more than checking in a couple of tilmes per day. I'm sure that if we had even just twice the number of posters we do now (and maybe a second DM with a schedule complementary to mine), individual post counts would be significantly higher.

That's not a complaint, btw, just an observation. I know how it is, I'm not swimming in time anymore either.

Eh, I know. I used to be heavily involved in Terisia back in the day when we would get thirteen pages in a thread in a day, sometimes more between multiple threads.

Honestly, I like the pacing here for now. Plus it is a lot more personal and fun with adventuring parties. Can't wait till the adventure is over and the experience drop. :D Great times.

Jun 15, 2009 16:59:27
Yeah, the pacing is slow, but it does make it stress free. Don't have to feel like you're holding anyone up, and not rushed to think of good responses.

But a slight increase would be nice, just so it doesn't take a RL year to get through any adventures.

I would suggest maybe a night we could get our small group together to move things along. But again, i still dont have the Net, and it is a bit crazy right now with unpacking... but possibly a future endeavor.

... oh, and I can't wait for experience drop too! :D

I'll be taking another couple lvls of rogue, but might swap to something else eventually... or a ranged specific PrC if available...

I try to post at least once a day. When I was playing here before I was working at a place where I was in front of a computer all day and my post count was much much higher. I probably posted two or three times a day, and I was also playing in a few other games outside of Garic's. Nowadays, I have to wait till I get home to post, and it's usually right before I'm off to bed.

I'm also trying to rediscover my character, which might be partly the reason for my lack of posts. As the story moves along and he gets more involved and familiar with what is going on, I'm sure you'll see an increase of posts from me.

I had planned to go straight Bard, since last time I played I was told multi-classing wasn't allowed. My idea is to eventually give Satyre a more military bent. If I can show this through multi-classing and it will be allowed, I'm in favor of it.

I think you may be confusing games: multiclassing has always been allowed here, as far as I know. If not, consider it officially so now. ;) Basically, if it's in the SRD it goes - with a few exceptions, as noted in the Rules thread.

Splendid timing on Gerin's part, and we're off again.

Stranger, are you and Malic on your way back to Gherben and the others, or did you want to wander around some more? It's early afternoon at the moment, say about two-ish. Same for Thorik and Gerin.

I have a late shift again this week, but that may work out better this time. It's going to be crazy busy at work until mid-September or so anyway, and with an early shift I can't bring myself to get up an hour earlier to be able to update the adventure threads before going to work.

I've also managed to get a spot as a player in an adventure on the Real Adventures forum, but that shouldn't really take away from the time I can devote to Garic's (even if the preparation was more labour-intensive than I thought it'd be).

Pant pant pant...

110 Degrees F (44.3 C)

sweat seat sweat 15% to 25% Humidity....

It has been like this the last four or five days.... and I work outside in the sun.... and we get lots of sun here.... lots...

I was wondering today what every one here does for a living. Family and that sort of thing. Just so we can get to know one another a little better.

My RL name is Derek Siedentopf, I'm 22, married (My wifes name is Indy), and a parent. The little one is almost one year old and her name is Vesper. I'm the active, athletic, and out doors sort. I am sort of a jack of all trades when it comes to construction. My specialty is Welding, Fabrication, and Mechanic. I mostly design coustom machines, mostly for the stone/mining industry, and build them from a mixture of what ever may be about, puchased materials, and I also modify existing machinery. I do a lot of work in machine shops making or modifying various pieces and parts.

I will be going into the United States Marine Core before the end of the year.

Grew up on a ranch, learned to work animals, and land. (This is also where I learned how to do the jack of all trades thing... If your going to be useful on a ranch you kind of need to be able to do whatever.)

How about everyone else?

First off, I approve of and endorse anything that will promote a sense of community for Garic's City, and Gerin's initiative above certainly falls under that category. That said, lets all please keep in mind this is a public forum - all info posted here is up for grabs for anyone who wants to use it. That's the main reason I use a hotmail address here: because I know it'll get spammed. Similar issues apply to other personal info. So, feel free to post in kind if you want to (or not, otherwise), but keep out any info you don't want determined strangers to find out about you.

That out of the way:
My name is Jan and I live in Belgium (where Jan is a guy's name, in case anyone's confused), land of chocolate, beer and fries, witlof and sprouts, historical cities including Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp and our capital Brussels, inter-region language disputes and probably the largest number of government officials per head in any country with a population exceeding 1 million. Thirty-six, single, no offspring, 1 cat suffering from ADHD (Seriously. It's ridiculous). Working (far too hard ;) ) in ICT for a helpdesk provider. I'd like to say I'm outdoorsy, athletic and active as well, but that'd be a lie. More than one, actually. :P Still, I can run five miles at a reasonable pace without collapsing and I ride my bike to work (15 miles in each direction) every day - there's room for improvement, but I'm not a complete couch potato. Hobbies outside D&D (or RPGs in general) include reading (when I have time, which lately doesn't happen anymore), board games and a bit of cooking (with the corrollary that I enjoy eating as well).

Do you mind terribly if I just head to Kheffrem, Pangur? If Gerin wants to join I'm sure he will jump in. Pity I don't get to interact with him often enough, but it seems touch and go with us currently.

Nah, go ahead. It's been long enough.

EDIT: Gerin's ready anyway, it seems.

I'm really quite amazed at how slow it got around here. I always thought the place would remain hustly bustly long after I left for the workforce. At least I'm back now. Am I correct in understanding that this is Garic's City, 100 years after it's original inception?

I don't think we're quite at the 100-year jubilee yet - ST moved Garic's forward by about a quarter century.

Has anyone ever given thought to what the Hightower looks like? I briefling considered this when Sliverny approached the front, but couldn't think of how to describe it.

I did some searching on tower pictures and found out there are a whole lot of interpretations of the word 'tower'. Square ones, round ones, octagonal ones, mini-castles, tall ones, short ones, fat ones, thin ones, whole buildings, etc.

I'd kind of like to get a visual for what the Hightower is actually like. Any ideas?

I like to think of it as an actual tower, but very gothic/baroque: crenellations, support beams, an intricate roof structure, platforms, banners flying everywhere... A regular tower wouldn't do since space constraints would make it impossible for a single tower to accomodate an institute such as the Hightower, but I've hinted at extradimensional spaces at least once already. Mundane physical limitations don't need to apply.

Interesting. I did a little googling on Baroque and Gothic architecture earlier. Although I confess, there are too many styles of Gothic for my poor little head.

Banners flying everwhere huh? I wonder what kind.

I figured it could be one of those really wide fat towers, only tall and supported by Flying buttresses and magic.

Posted and edited slightly to put in more formality. Silly me. Ah, but I am tired. Calling it an early night for once.

Gothic is lovely in that it involves buttresses and tends to be massive indeed, where Romanesque is much more squat and centralized, unable to support to great of a weight. Baroque is, ah, 'fancy'.

I saw some photos of (I think) Southern Italian Baroque that made me immediately think wizards tower. Although they have that element of 'so pretty it must be magic' I think it lacks a little of the intimidation.

I've always thought that a Wizards tower must be both a fortress from the outside and the inside. Despite there always being the chance of attack from the unwashed masses, wizards have the dual duty of protecting the unwashed masses from experiments gone awry.

I was thinking about a freakish sort of merger between gothic and baroque architecture. Sort of whisimcal white marble with darker veins. Perhaps even filigreed with precious metal(s). I'm not sure how well buttresses would work with a tower aside, perhaps, from completely surrounding it. An interesting idea in itself, although maybe they could be featured at the corners.

My biggest problem in imagining the Hightower, is that I don't know what it looks like at the very top. A silly problem, I know, but it's a biggy for me. There are so many tops that a tower might have! Conical roofs, crenelations, flared crows nests (w/ or w/o roofs/crenelations), a flat top, a roofless top floor, and on and on.

I had actually avoided Kheffrem naming those present to allow others to join in if they choose to, but that is probably unlikely. No need to edit at this point, but for anyone else on the horse fair adventure: if you decide you'd like your character to be present at the meet, that option is still open.

And g'night, Stranger. I won't be up much longer myself, I think.

I seem to recall Lord Malifaeyr taking care of business from the top of the Hightower on the Night of Shadows. So at the very least, there's likely a platform of sorts that provides a complete view over the city and the tower stands as the highest point inside the city walls.

Oops. Tee hee? I'll wait for a bit before replying to Kheffrem so the others have a voice in any case: big decision this from what I understand. Happily excited about it, though. :D I really like Kheffrem. Fun fellow.

The others can still rush in at this point if I stall for a bit, basically... or, there is another idea.

I'm not sure how well buttresses would work with a tower aside, perhaps, from completely surrounding it. An interesting idea in itself, although maybe they could be featured at the corners.

Towers often don't need buttresses because they have a large base to stand on: a temple with buttresses. However, in the event that the tower grows exceptionally large the buttresses are typically unseen. They reside within the tower itself, commonly towards the top. Such a construction can be more easily witnessed in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, within the dome that sits atop the Basilica. Basically, some walls are hollow save for sturdy support beams and the like.

St. Peter's Basilica is also a good example of a combination of Baroque and Gothic. You might find some interesting inspiration by googling its interior.

I'd always thought of it as resembling a tree, a tall wide, and tapering original tower, but with various extensions extruding from the central cylinder, as senior wizards extend their labs and working areas, possibly with magically reinforced stone where it'd normally be structurally improbable. The topmost areas would likely house senior wizards, for whom stairs are optional, and likewise, stairwells are likely to contain open areas in the center for those wizards capable of flight, levitation, or line of sight teleportation, while visitor access can be arranged to the very highest levels with Levitation enchanted lifts.

Structural integrity shouldn't be a problem with an enchantment to reinforce materials magically, so the tower can reach much higher without risking collapse.

Likewise, I expect various wizards to have tunneled deeply, expanding through and around the sewer network for certain other types of laboratories. Particular private working areas extend covertly into the depths, or out of this world. In particular, more dangerous magical experiments involving beasts, undead, fiends, potentially toxic or explosive effects are more easily contained in the depths, and give plausible deniability when some of these get loose.

It's ok, Sliverny can be very off-putting. He could grow quite sick of her in a short period of time.

After all, dwarves are never known for their magical aptitude so much as their primitive religious zealotry and dedication to the art of breaking large pieces of rock into smaller pieces of rock. Dirty business that, very grubby.

Just an honest, earthy, profound observation, a perfect example of uncomplicated dwarven wisdom. ;)

Or a tragic accident could happen. Dead dwarves don't talk. Or maybe just strike him mute...

Ever get around to adding the religion information?

Erm. No... :embarrass

I needed to finetune a few things in my own contribution, but then a bunch of other stuff (RL and Garic's-related) needed to get moved to the front burner instead and nothing ever came of it. I really need to finish 2 things first: government info (since that matters for the game and might get tied into future adventures and because of the idea I'm considering for UnCon) and info about the Hightower (as a major player in Garic's and now also for Sliverny's benefit).

My weekend's going to be exceedingly busy (hosting an annual quiz on Friday and my goddaughter's first fête on Sunday, and family occasions such as the latter are always epic productions in my family), but it looks like I'll be able to wrap up the above two as well as the religious info sometime next week. Fingers crossed.

I've made a decent start on all topics that need to be covered asap so getting you involved in those would be awkward at this time (once everything's published, I'll welcome all additions though). There is something else though: the organisation of the different guilds in the city (other than the SSAG, obviously). That's something I'd love to have some more background info on, and it will likely become quite useful in the near future as well. So if that tickles your fancy, write away. Doesn't have to be organisational either: anything that paints a picture would be most welcome. Short bios of (in)famous historic Hightower wizards would be fun as well.

What are the different guilds?

Your standard late-medieval guilds: blacksmiths (and other smiths), coopers, tanners, weavers, bakers, brewers (I don't think being a brewer was actually a true profession for quite a long time, but we have a history of brewers in Garic's), anything you can think of.

And then really anything you can think of: if you'd like there to be a rat catcher's guild for instance, by all means submit one. Maybe a waste disposal guild could be founded to offer the city sewer maintenance and the regular carting off of refuse. Alchemists could be fun - possibly failed wizards who turned to the creation of semi-magical effects by mundane means.

I got interested in this because I'd like to have a much wider variety of power groups (with sometimes conflicting interests) in the city, without resorting to extremes too much: as an example, we can have one sorcerous cabal in the city, like the Avowed, but more than one would be a stretch, given that we already have a powerful magical organisation, the Hightower, which also has a city mandate to regulate wizardry.

So, guilds: various groups with specific interests and more influence and wealth than most individuals - so as to have more hooks to hang adventures on (and barbs to make those adventures more fun).
