This is an adventure for Maelut, Renna Scylla, and a player yet to be named. If you aren't one of those, then please don't post here.

Maelut
HP: 24, Initiative: +3, Speed: 30'
AC: 15* (+3 Dex, +1 armor, +1 proficiency, +1 defense)
BAB: +2 (melee/grapple +3, ranged/finesse +5)

Renna
Still secret at this point.

Scylla
Yup, same thing.

???
Take a guess.

************************************

The small group of herb gatherers leaves the security of the city gates, and begins their appointed task.

The two giggling girls guide the group in a south westardly direction until the walls of the city are lost to sight. Following a meandering brook, the three herbalists head into the forest and find the first patch of herbs on their list easy enough.

The girls set to work immediately, gathering up pink buds off of the small thorn bushes scattered around the clearing. Useful for making incense, or so they tell Maelut.

Picking only the most mature of the buds, they soon have a small pouch filled up. And they press along again, still following the stream.

Maelut follows behind the two girls, at first watching their surroundings with a suspicious eye, remembering the violence of his last few excursions outside of the city. The girls seem oblivious to anything other than their jokes and stories, laughing and walking lightly through the natural surroundings. By the time the group reaches the first patch of herbs Maelut has relaxed somewhat, his companions' good humor relaxing him.

"Incense? I've never understood why all the churches love that stuff so much. It seems to me that if you're going to the trouble of making something, it might as well be edible. Wouldn't the gods prefer a good meal to a nice smell? Although, since this is such an aromatic plant, do you think it might taste good too?"

As they stand by the stream, Maelut squats down and lets the cold water flow around his fingers. He watches as the tiny pieces of rock and soil are drawn past, swirling in their own private eddies and currents before disappearing around the next bank.

.o0(Angelique would have approved of this trip. Outside, non-violent, and getting herbs to make things for people to enjoy. I wish she would come by the Inn sometime...but I suppose she's working things out for herself. And she wouldn't want me not to enjoy this just because she isn't here.)

Standing up, he wipes his hand dry on some tall grasses before rejoining the two girls.

Renna looks at Maelut when he ponders could incense used to spice food and then at Scylla, who proceeds to roll her eyes.

"No. Incense powder makes food taste bad. I once slipped some to Brother Malerrth's stew bowl, he likes burnt incense quite much, but he spat it all out."

"And soiled Ard'Nas' robe, which you didn't mind at all."

"Oi. We should soon be where those plants you are seeking grow. Two others first. The one with dark green leaves and small white flowers, and the other one which berries make you dizzy."

"And, Renna, yonder is th' plant with dark green leaves."

Scylla points to a bend of stream couple of dozen yards ahead.

Maelut looks at the bunches of plants being gathered by the two girls.

"It looks like you have quite a bit to carry, I'd be happy to take some of the full bags in my backpack for you."

He looks at the vegetation downriver, and remembers the problems he had with the halflings.

"Let's go to get those together, it's probably a good idea not to split up when we're outside the city walls."

The three companians find the berry bushes next to the stream. Most of them have yet to blossum, but after a careful search a small handful of berries are gathered.

As they pick the berries, Maelut is careful not to get any of the juices near his mouth, having heard the girls' warning about the effects of the fruit.

Once they finish picking the berries, Maelut begins looking around for anything that resembles the Mother's Soul Grass.

"So, does that plant we were talking about grow around here?"

Along the side of the stream is a half orc in a green cloak with white shal, an aoclite of the temple of the Mother. He is leaning on a spear as though it were a walking staff.

"Hello, would you be the forageing party from the other church?
I was sent to collect herbs with you, Mother's Soul Grass, or something like that."

Maelut looks at the odd acolyte, the image of a half-orc picking berries seeming somewhat discordant in his mind.

"This is Scllya and this is Renna, they are from the Church of Agathalos. I'm Maelut, a cook, and I'm just tagging along to get some of the Mother's Soul Grass for my employer. Please, join us, it would be nice to have the company."

"Hello laddies"

Gilgiga extends a large hand down to the girls.

"My name is Gilgiiga, I'm not here to pick berries (altough I wouldn't mind some berries myself) I'm here to collect Mother's Soul Grass myself. It has some healing properties that we need to take advantage of, however we were fresh out.
So I was sent off to join you in collecting herbs.

This should be an uneventufull mission, right?"

Gilgiga points a finger a Maelut.

"You, I think I've seen you before? Where was it?"

"You want a berry? Don't eat these then, they will make you feel like the world was spinning around you. Not nice at all."

"Uneventful as long as Renna manages to stay out of the stream."

"Oh really. Last time it was you who took a dip. And whined about it to Ard'Nas for rest of the trip."

"She was mean and didn't do a thing about it. She got rep... repe... reprimanded for it afterwards. Twas not a right thing to do, you see."

Gilgiga takes her advice and dosen't eat the berries, he does however place a handfull into his leather pouch. He may find a use for them latter.

"Don't worry about the stream, I'm a fairly good swimer, and fisher for that matter. I could snare you out if you need to.

But that wouldn't be verry fun, not fun at all"

"No, I don't expect any excitement unless these two devolve into an all-out brawl over reading habits."

Maelut tries to place the half-orc for a moment, and finally snaps his fingers as he remembers.

"Yes! You were in Nobody's a few days ago with a few people new to the city, right? How have things been going for you so far?"

Suddenly the comment about the herb's healing properties registers on Maelut's brain, his voice raises an octave and he becomes very animated as he talks.

"Healing properties, you say? Not unlike the old Bloodweed that used to grow in the valleys around Sorat Arlon... that could keep vegetables from rotting... the mold would be suppressed... combining it with a non-rising flour mixture... add meats to the... prevent any changes in... freshness being related... moisture wouldn't..."

Maelut trails off into some incoherent mumblings as he considers the potential uses of this herb. After a couple of minutes he snaps out of it, remembering that there are other people around.

"Anyway, if you've got enough of those berries we should head off to the next patch of plants. I can't wait to get my hands on that Mother's Soul Grass."

"Mr. Maelut was it?
I'm doing fine, been working alot at the church. It's nice to be out and about.
Normaly I get half the day to myself, but old Doc, the groundskeeper is always guilting me into doing more work. I rarely get out of the garden.

A times it seems that he's not training an accolite as much as a replacement so he can retire.

Umph

I haven't heard much from Drav, other then that he joined the watch. He chose his path, and I chose mine. Mine just brought me here to you."

Gilgiga then turns to the ladies.

"And exactly who are you two?"

The girls,Renna and Scylla, lead the two men further up the stream, at one point crossing over it and a fallen tree bridge.

It is several a few hours before they arrive at their destination.

And by the look in the girls eyes, Maelut and Gillgigga, can tell that something is amiss. The clearing they arrive in is bare and torn up.

Animal tracks. Most definetly animal tracks.

Gilgigga finds several good hoof prints. Most likely those of a sheep or a goat. But a big one. The tracks are almost twice the size of any the hunter has seen before.

Occasionally, the ranger finds other marks next to the hoofprints, but he can't make out what they are.

Gilgiga looks up, oddly confused and calls to the others.

"Hey, I found somethings, lots of them. There's lots of tracks all over the place.
Mostly herd animals, like sheep, but, but they are way too big. I can't tell what happened, they just trampled the place."

He stops over one of the wiered tracks

"And then their's this thing, I have no clue what it could be. Anybody have a guess?"

Gilgiga is upset by the strange track, he dosen't like things he dosen't know. But the thought of tracking, hunting, and possibly takeing down prey as large as this makes his blood rush.

As soon as Maelut sees the ravaged clearing, his face collapses into disappointment. He sees the dream of discovering new ways of using spices disappear as their potential source of Mother's Soul Grass stands destroyed before them.

After a few seconds, the implications of Gilgiga's statement settle into his head.

"Herd animals wouldn't have stampeded through here for no good reason, they tend to stick to their established paths."

Maelut takes a long look at the surroundings, checking to see if any of the animals remain or if there is any sign of a fight. He then walks over to the track over which Gilgiga stands and examines it.

"I wonder what could have happened here. Can you track the direction in which they went?"

"I think you are right, sheep wouldn't do this alone. I'm willing to guess that whatever caused this print was in charge somehow.

It'll be hard to folow these tracks, they are covered by the hooves. However folowing the hoof prints should be like shooting humans in a cwm. Sorry, I...
I didn't mean that, it's just an expression, sorry.

I'll see if I can folow these tracks."

A monster footprints?! What kind? A mean goat?"

"Hmph. Mean goat? Clearly something evil has upset this place."

the girls look at each other and lean together to whisper something to each other. Scylla then looks warily around and speaks to Gilgiga.

"Is the thing still around? And is it safe to follow the tracks?"

"But, Scylla, surely Maelut and Gilgiga know what they are doing, they are both adventurers. I think. Like Codrian is. And don't say you are not interested, a thing like this, like, it's straight out of those tales."

I'm none too woried about the big thing, it looks like it's just a sheep or something, although bunches biger than usual. I doubt it's what's behind this, just a 'Weapon' of sorts.

These other tracks concern me, I need to know what they could be."

He takes the bow off of his back, and slips the spear into it's place. Effortlessly he strings the bow. He stands at the edge of the clearing looking out into the wood.

"This could be dangerious, you should stay here. In all respects I should stay here."

He sliips off his back pack, hopeing to reduce weight.

"But, I've got to see what did this.
Let's hope I don't need any oil or rope.

I'll return a soon as I get sight, and see if you have any ideas.
I'll return if it gets twards sunset. Not good to be tracking monsters, alone, at night.
Ok?"

I'll go slow, hopefully to prevent bieng seen, or heard.

"I think it's a bad idea for us to split up. Neither one of us can protect two girls by himself...it would be better for all of us to go together. You could lead and I would bring up the rear. "Because I was caught. You know, it's like the training you get, you have to practice it before you are good. And it was your fault that I was caught on that one time."

Gillgigga rechecks the prints, while Maelut checks for dangers in crossing the stream. The half-orc finds a few more of the strange tracks in among the hoofprints, but still can't make them out.

Maelut guesses the water isn't more then three feet deep at it's center and roughly ten feet wide, but it is quick flowing and cold. Crossing the slippery rocks of the stream bed might be tricky for the girls. Especialy with the chill that already is in the air. (And for the bigger men as well.)

.o0(Those girls certainly aren't too strong, it would be best for us to find a way to help them across.)

Maelut looks at the river and considers how to get them across safely. He gauges the river to be easily jumpable if he removes his pack and armour, but realizes that the two girls won't be able to follow him.

"I can probably jump the river's width if I take off my armour, and if I take one end of my rope with me, then I could tie it to a tree on the other side. Then the rest of you could follow me across, using the rope to steady your crossing."

"My only worry is that it might be a little cold, but honestly I think we should be alright if we dry off quickly and keep moving."

.o0(What is it with me and crossing cold streams? I swear, the gods must have something to do with this.)

Maelut shakes his head and grins, although the smile is quickly erased when he remembers the end result of his last stream crossing. The kobolds...

Renna takes several deep breathes and then grabs hold of the rope and steps into the water. She makes it across easily.

"Let's just keep moving and we should be alright."

Once they start going again, Maelut re-arms himself with his crossbow, relieved to see that it made it safely across the river with little more than some splashes. Using his sleeve to dry the cord, he pulls it back and returns to his position as the rear guard of the group.

"Look at that...I wonder why it went to this tree."

Maelut sees the tree, the dampness on its bark catching the sun's late rays as they snake through the spring canopy. He goes over to it, quickly scans his surrounding and looks up into the tree, then examines the liquid to see if it is water, animal urine, or something else.

"Well, at least we know we're dealing with a normal animal and not some supernatural nonsense. And if it's still wet, then it can't be very far away."

"Girls, if anything happens then try to get behind us, but stay close in case there's another thing nearby."

Maelut double-checks the crossbow bolt, licking his fingers and drawing them back along the fletching to make it stand straight against the evening breeze.

"Let's keep going, but everyone keep their eyes open."

Maelut reels back from the goat's attack, and thinks that it must have shaken him up more than he realized as the two girls draw weapons of their own.

The battle scene reminds Maelut of his encounter with the kobolds, and he remembers how terrible it had been. But the fact that everyone had survived gives him hope, and he decides to share that hope with the rest of his companions.

"Listen to me, we can get through this. These foes are nothing, they claim the woods unjustly in the same way that kobolds claimed my village's woods. We will overcome them!"

"Think of the people for whom we fight: the families and the churches, the shopkeepers and our friends. We must emerge victorious, for their sake if for no other."

"But if that fails, think of the food! Imagine the feast that will await us on our return. There will be Elven green apples with the thick skin and tart juicy centre, made into an apple cake with layers of icing so thick that you could hide a grape inside them. I'll prepare dwarven meats, their spicy aromas filling the room so swiftly that your noses will be overwhelmed by their power; the ancient ale marinades dripping over the meat as I sear it over an open fire. There will be fresh vegetables picked for us, firm and ripened to perfection. Think of the food!"

The two men walk back towards the city with the girls, the cool evening light casting a ghostly monotone on the forest. Maelut peers into the forest, crossbow sights following his eyes; in the back of his mind is the worry that they will have to fight the fiend in the dark, something which will leave him at a serious disadvantage. Wondering what Gilgiga was thinking when he suggested getting some help, Maelut speaks up.

M: "You really think that we need extra muscle to deal with this creature?"

Thinking back to the satyr's strength, Gilgiga shakes his head. He wonders if they can really be of any help against something that the satyr can't handle by itself. At the same time, a gut feeling of distrust for the whole situation creeps over him.

G: "Possibly. But I just wanted some privacy to talk about that satyr...I still don't trust it."

M: "Why? Its story seemed to make sense to me."

Gilgiga squints his eyes and tries to put his finger on the problem.

G: "Something just didn't make sense...it said that it had been chosen by Ordemetrex, but later changed the story to Agathalos."

The conversation quickly runs through Maelut's head, the satyr's eerie voice seeming to still echo inside his skull.

M: "It was hard to understand what that thing was saying, but I think it claimed to serve Agathalos from the beginning."

G: "I suppose. It's hard to remember, everything happened so fast."

Returning to his original question, Maelut tries to work out the plan.

M: "Anyway, do you think we ought to find some people to help us?"

G: "No...if you're right about the satyr then we do have a responsibility to do this ourselves. And if you're wrong, then it wouldn't be fair to involve other people in our problem."

M: "You still don't think the satyr can be trusted, do you? Remember, you're the one who fired first."

G: "Hey, he pointed his bow first. Besides, I've heard stories of fey doing terrible things to people like us."

M: "But he didn't, and you need to remember that. He could have done a lot more damage to you, and that goat didn't even seem
fazed by my attacks."

G: "True, but I still don't trust him. I won't believe his story until I see that fiend myself."

M: "Fair enough, I suppose."

The tension somewhat cleared, the two continue down the trail in silence.

The creature strikes out at Maelut as he moves to flank the creature, missing but when Maelut reaches in to grab thew imp, he receives a nasty sting to his hand. (Maelut takes 4) Again he fights off the wave of sickness that spreads through his limbs.

He grabs hold of the imp and squeeze on to it. The imp struggles to break free but isn't strong enough to escape the cooks grasp.

Gillgigga shoves his spear into the grabbled devil causing it to call out in pain.

As he sits, his hands raise up to the level of his shoulders and his arms stretch fully forwards. Slowly, his hands come back to rest in his lap. He focuses on anything that might be coming from the vials, and attempts to feel what sort of thing they might do.

Three of the four vials take on a faint glow. Maelut is able to deduce that the two that smell of vinegar are conjuration, the one Gillgigga could not identify is necromancy.

The potion that smells like honey does not glow.

Maelut hands the vials back to Gilgiga, telling him about what he could determine.

"Now, as for this chest. It's locked, and it looks pretty hard to break apart. And I'm not inclined to break it open, since it might have something breakable inside. One of the girls could probably carry it back with us, if we wanted to wait until we got back to the city. Although that would mean paying someone to open it for us... I don't know what the best solution is."

"You don't have crowbar or anything of like with which you could pry it open?"

Scylla asks.

Meanwhile, Renna crawls back into the lair to sprinkle it with silver and say couple of prayers for effect.

"I don't have a crowbar, but if I might be able to wedge one of these rocks into the hinge and force it open that way."

Maelut walks around, looking for some flat rocks to use as levers. After he collects a few, he walks back over to the chest and places one next to the hinge. With all his weight, he pushes on the rock, attempting to burst the hinge from its socket and open the chest.

Maelut can't seem to get enough strength behind his attempts, and the hinge does not break.

Standing back and panting, Maelut wipes his brow from the exertion. The imp's venom, still residing in his muscles, only makes the attempt more strenuous.

"Gilgiga, this is too heavy for me to manage by myself. Let's try it together, maybe that'll be enough to force it open."

Gilgiga reflects upon his new knowledge of the vials, then decides it's useless to him. He then moves up closer to the chest.

"I guess we would have more strength together, you grasp it there,"

He says pointing.

"I will take it here, then force it oppen.[/i]

Gilgiga attempts to force the chest open with Maeluts help.

Even with the added muscle of the halforc, the chest remains shut.

Maelut shakes his head with frustration.

"Surely that creature must have had a key. Renna, did you see anything in there that might have been a key for this chest?"

"If not, we might as well just take the chest with us and return to the satyr. He might have an idea, and if not, then we can take it back to the city with us. It's not too heavy."

Renna shakes her head. "I didn't see a key."

The group makes it's way back to the shrine. The Satyr is up on his hooves though still a bit unbalanced. "Diiiid yooou cleeeanse iiiit's laaaair?"

"The remains have been buried, silver was sprinkled, and all the appropriate prayers were said. The fiend's lair will not taint another soul."

Maelut pauses respectfully before continuing.

"We found this chest in its lair, but cannot open it. We will take it back to the city with us, unless you could suggest something else."

Maelut bows as he takes the bag of herbs.

"I thank you for the gift, and we will indeed be cautious with the chest. If we cannot be of any further assistance, then I believe we would do well to return these young girls to the safety of the city."

The three humans and their half-orc companion bow deeply to the satyr, and each offers their prayers for his full recovery. Maelut leads the three of them back through the woods, retracing their steps quickly and easily. In the higher trees, a cool breeze whistles through the leaves, flipping them over to expose silver undersides. Birds dive from the quickly moving branches, landing on the groundbrush which is shielded from the winds.

When the reach the river, Gilgiga carefully uses the grappling hook and rope to help everyone cross without incident. After several hours, they finally reach the city gates, the guards looking at the dirty and wounded group with skepticism.

"Oy, yoo those chaps wot went out getting those leafs for the temple? Yoo've 'ad a rough time, wot with the mud, blood and crud. Ey, that roimed!"

Shaking their heads at the loquatious guard, the four pass through the gates and into the city. After escorting Renna and Scylla to the temple, Maelut turns and heads to Nobody's for a good night's rest.
