| #1shatteredtowerJun 30, 2003 20:37:55 | Please do not post to this thread. I would like to keep it tidy for housekeeping purposes. Thank you. Character Approval: A player must submit the character (constructed using 3.5 D&D rules) and description to the DMs (kneyejailb and Shatteredtower) by e-mail. The PC is not approved for play until it is listed on the Census thread. Players who post in game without prior approval will have their posts subject to deletion. A player may request to have a character's record and/or history omitted from this thread and recorded privately by the DMs, but all player characters must represent a minor noble family. The character description will still be posted here. Characters are to be generated with PHB rules. (Those rules may be reviewed here, or here, if you have trouble with a pdf format.) The only permitted variants to PHB classes are the expert NPC class (DMG, pg 109) and the wilder class from the Expanded Psionics Handbook (hereafter referred to as the XPH). Feats and skills from the XPH are also permitted to player characters. If those feats or skills do not require a psionic focus or power point expenditure, they may be used by a non-psionic character. (This includes the Extra Power feat: replace the word "power" with "spell" for spellcasters.) However, transparency between spells and psionic powers has been extended beyond the norm: Knowledge (psionics) and Psicraft are covered instead by Knowledge (arcana) and Spellcraft respectively. (Item creation feats are handled separately, however.) In addition, all characters use the features of the aristocrat class (DMG, pg 108) where that is advantageous. Thus, all characters have a minimum of d8 for HD, good Will saves, proficiency with all simple and martial weapons and all types of armor and shields, BAB no worse than a rogue's, and a base of at least 4 skill points per level. They also treat all skills on the aristocrat skill list as class skills. Characters ability scores are generated with the 32 point buy method (base scores start at 8) and start at level 1. Apply racial modifiers after spending all of your points. |

His brown hair is cut short and the intelligence behind his eyes belies his age. Although an imposing and commanding sight, Mal is soft-spoken. Mal proudly wears his father's colours and coat of arms. Despite his the nature of his birth, Mal was raised by his father with love and care, raised alongside Lord Jannis' legitimate offspring. He has been trained in the art of battle, history, languages, and the duties of the nobility (though he could never hope to aspire to inherit his father's title). Under pressure from his father's wife, he was persuaded to enlist in the Silver Sword. The old priest should have been enjoying the peace of his venerable age, but he in turned owed a great debt to Alexandra for aid rendered to him 45 years earlier. Having little to no patience with the irresponsible young halfling in his tutelage, Father Kelly punished Xade frequently and severely, usually by locking him in the cellar. Developing a dreadful fear of rats, Xade took to filling rocks in his pockets with which to defend himself. Combined with long, grueling hours of study and frequent examinations, it was inevitable that Xade would break from sanity for a time. He is mostly recovered from the ordeal now, but remains just a little unstable -- not dangerous to himself or others, but obsessive-compulsive tendencies have coupled with a short attention span and a lack of impulse control. In his own mind, however, Xade is well adjusted and everyone else is odd. Xade, wears mostly earthen tones for robes. Brown, tan, grey. His holy symbol is oversized for a halfling and is attached to a chain meant for a human necklace. The symbol spends its time mostly tucked into a pocket in his robes and the chain around his neck guiding him to it. Rocks tend to click together in his satchel as he walks. | #4shatteredtowerJun 30, 2003 21:02:54 | Harou's head is covered with long curly red hair, worn either free or pulled back into a pony tail. His slim face is covered in a red beard. From his cheekbones to his jaw line he keeps it trimmed like a hedge, but the beard goes to a curly point at his chin. He often keeps this knotted into one small braid. He is average height for a man, standing just under six feet, and his build is slim. His skin is pale in the winter and gains some color in the warmer months, but mainly only on his face and hands. He has rich green eyes that mimic the color of evergreens after a rain. When needed, Harou wears a tall, pointed brown leather hat with a wide brim. Over his shoulders is a matching cloak that reaches to just above his ankles. Boots match the cloak and hat, but are worn, pointed and broken in by many travels. Under his cloak he wears neutral colors of light and dark grey, brown, and white. His shirt is white, but over this he wears a brown vest with buckles and straps. His robes are white linen with white embroidered trim. Inside the trim are many runes in pale green thread. He generally only wears them when in official attire or in open battle. He leaves adventuring to his traveling clothes. Harou carries a gnarled oak staff and a straight long sword. On his belt is a long bone pipe, made from the antler of some creature and a dagger of likewise fashion. Accompanying him is a raven named Pawl. The bird is large, and his black feathers are rugged and snaggled looking, giving him a shambly appearance. He squawks constantly when around people, and has a nasty habit of stealing food from unattended plates. |
| #5shatteredtowerJun 30, 2003 21:05:01 | Pangur Bán is the youngest son of the spiritual leader of a nomadic desert tribe of gnomes. For twoscore years, he was pampered, spoiled, and doted on by his parents, seven sisters and - a little - six brothers. Yet when the winds turned towards the north on his 42nd birthday he was able-bodied, quick of wit, and ready to start the journey into manhood. Pangur chased the winds for ten months, until his nose detected hints of purpose and destiny on the morning breeze instead of the fleeting restlessness that had been driving him. That same day, he saw the stone walls of Garic’s City outlined starkly by the rays of the morning sun, and Pangur knew this was the place. Finding a place is one thing - and an easy thing for one whose nose could read the winds - but finding its purpose quite another. Pangur had no idea what was expected of him in this strange city, but his forefathers used an unlikely medium to get a message across: Pangur’s donkey, Felicity, trotted past a large edifice sporting a sign in the shape of a silver sword, turned toward the stables, and refused to move. Being willing to listen when told what to do, Pangur went inside, inquired about the purpose of the establishment and promptly joined the ranks. The army is going to make a man of him, it would seem. Pangur is a young gnome on a quest that will be his rite of passage, as his tribe’s traditions dictate. He is of average height for a gnome, though quite slender, with dark brown eyes, nut-brown skin, and curly black hair. His wide, flowing clothes are uniformly dark blue and include a scarf, wrapped around his head. He wears a number of rings, bracelets, chains, lucky charms and talismans on his person, none of which have any real magical properties. He believes they protect him nonetheless, bringing him luck or facilitating communication with the spirits of his ancestors. Pangur is a gifted artist, accomplished both as a storyteller and as a violinist. It’s through this art that he honours and communicates with his ancestors, and it’s a vital part of his use of magical power. | #6shatteredtowerJun 30, 2003 21:07:43 | Stronger, quicker, and tougher than most of his peers, Elobi would have fit in better as a soldier's child, rather than the third son in the House of Anchors. Curt in manner and oblivious to both his physical and emotional environment, Elobi was seen as a burden and a danger in a house of silver tongued merchants. They sent him to Lawford Aniyeh, a local scholar and mage, to learn the fundamentals of their profession. Elobi threw himself into his studies in an attempt to please them, but while he could recite facts without difficulty, he lacked the insight to apply his knowledge practically. He fared better in learning the rudiments of magic, mastering a handful of spells. Before he could make much progress, however, his parents meddled in his future once again, enlisting him in the army. Confused yet pleased to be of service to the house, Elobi departed to begin his assignment. Elobi is rather tall and well muscled for a mage. He usually wears loose canvass pants and a grey tunic, free from the marking of his house. Lawford gave him with knee-length red overcoat as a parting gift, to keep him in good health. He wears it protectively, keeping spellcasting notes in an inner pocket. Elobi's red hair is worn closely, if crudely, cropped, and he is always clean shaven. | #7shatteredtowerJun 30, 2003 21:10:25 | Savar was born the son of an orc chieftain and an enslaved human bard. Savar's life was less than easy: not only did his half-human side made it hard for him to live alongside pure-blood orcs, but the tribe's shaman prophesized that he would be troublesome. In addition, his mother often told him of the wonders of human civilization. Savar's father viewed his half-human son with beady eyes, but generally left him to his own devices. Setting little store in his future within the tribe, Savar rounded up all the supplies he could carry (quite a lot) and left for Garic's City, his mother's birthplace. But in this predominately human city, there was little place for a half-orc except in the business of war. His offer of service was accepted by the Silver Sword's leadership, creating a minor scandal within the order's ranks. Why was an orcish title being recognized as noble rank, many wondered. Not even Savar knows the answer to that one. This half-orc can only be described as a mountain. Standing well over six feet and built like an ogre, Savar often has trouble making a first impression other than awe or terror, especially with his orcish features. Bristling with weapons, Savar is a veritable armory with something for every occasion. His garb is a bit unusual for a barbarian; a tattered, wide-brimmed hat is normally pulled down over his head. Scars too numerous to count dot his skin, and he lacks the first two digits of his right index finger. Six metal rings line both of his ears, and his face is set in the expression of someone who expects the worst and knows how to handle it. While Savar's body may be mostly orc, his mind has a lot of human in it. On his good days, Savar is philosophic, thoughtful, and dryly witty. On bad days, usually when his orc heritage has brought some sort of misfortune upon him, he's angry, resentful, and as brutish as his ancestors. Having grown up in one tribe of hostile neighbors, only to move to a much larger tribe of more subtly hostile ones, he's in desperate need of people who don't want to drive him away because of his grey skin, size, and short tusks. Otherwise, he may become the thing that most assume him to be: a mindless engine of destruction. | #8shatteredtowerJun 30, 2003 21:15:43 | Youngest child of the wealthy Verdun family, Aries was both neglected and spoiled his youth but spoiled. The best tutors his parents' money could buy took him off their hands. His family deemed his interested in martial arts a silly, impractical hobby, but attempted to humour him with expensive personal trainers. Later, they allowed the jaded Aries to seek out better teachers on the road, which was he became involved in prizefighting, more for the thrill than the money. Nevertheless, as his skill grew, he began to change, learning to control his fiery angst in the southern territories of Sederlund. Withi three years, Aries began his training within the Tiger-Swallow Fist style. His master gave him the training name of En Siroc Var, the Cinder Shrike, the hatchling phoenix of Sederlund myth. Before he could earn a fiercer name, he was summoned home. His family assumed, based on his strange clothing and new name, that he'd fallen prey to a cult. Not knowing what else to do, they sent him to Garic's City, hoping that frontier duty would straighten him out. Standing a shade under six feet tall, Aries is a well-built man with a sleek, vigorous look about him. His grey eyes are deep set in his tanned face, framed by pale locks of bleached hair. Aries displays a nonchalant posture, though occasional tensing in his muscles reveals a hunger for action. | #9shatteredtowerJun 30, 2003 21:19:02 | Introduced by one means or another as "Radif Mirge, traveling librarian," this wandering scholar is an attractive enough fellow with a large frame. A frazzled grey-black goatee adorns his jaw, usually accompanied by several days worth of stubble. Squarish and well-scratched spectacles rest upon his narrow but symmetrical nose. His eyes are a warm dark brown under bushy eyebrows, bordered by the wrinkles that come from much laughter. His mid-length sandy black hair, graying now, is worn swept back as in disarray, and seldom appears to have been combed or washed. His clothing indicate a man of travel and letters; his leather pants are well worn and dirty. His brown-dyed woolen mantle and cloak are likewise filthy, though fashionable, with several pockets each. Beneath them he wears the lay of better-kept chainmail armor, which sets comfortably upon his shoulders. The symbol of Ordemetrex hangs from a leather thong worn around his neck. A utilitarian spear is held in place across his back by a thong, a trio of javelins worn to cross in the opposite direction, while a long knife is worn at his waist, across from a pair of leather pouches. The pack on his shoulders seems stuffed to capacity, but the contents are well-organized. The squarish shape of books is visible in a leather sack tied to this pack. A large, well-used wooden shield also rides above this pack when not in use. On those occasions Radif chooses to speak, he makes use of an extensive vocabulary in language that is grammatically well constructed. His voice is somewhat deeper than average, and he can project quite well. Radif spent a number of unproductive years studying wizardry at a prominent college before finding his true calling within church libraries. His enthusiasm for ancient history lead him to membership on several expeditions into forgotten ruins, acquiring a number of skills not normally associated with a man of the cloth. Having spent his life caring for the historic volumes of others, Radif's aging soul now longs to create a history of his own. | #12shatteredtowerJun 30, 2003 21:27:36 | For years, the memory of my father's home have haunted me. Now that the dreams have become less frequent, I entrust these words to my journal, so that I will never forget. Even after ten years, the memories are still vivid enough that I can smell the smoke of burning timbers mixed with the smell of burning meat. I doubt that that memory will ever fade. I was eighteen years old the year the Duke of Rolde attacked Rondell Keep. Still I can not blame him for the fall of my father; the fault for that treacherous attack lies with those who incited the Duke against him. Maybe I should tell you a bit more about myself, so that you can understand this tale when you read it. My name is Dorian Hafstane, first born son of Robert, Baron of Hafstane, lord of Rondell Keep, patron of the Rondell Bend. My father's keep was built in an elbow of the River Rondell and his lands were among the richest in the Duchy of Rolde. Through treachery and treason from those that coveted his lands, my father fell from grace, his lands and titles confiscated by the Duke. I fled to escape my father's fate and took the name Dorian the Grey for a time. To provide for myself, I became a mercenary, hiring out as a scout to those who needed my talents. I joined the imperial army two years ago, serving with distinction. When my superiors learned of my background, I was reassigned to the Silver Sword, though my true identity is still known to only a privileged few. I believe that I am now in a position to bring honor and glory back to the name Hafstane. -- excerpt from the Chronicles of Dorian Hafstane Dorian "d'Grey" Hafstane stands a full seven feet tall, with long, dark hair tied back in a pony tail. His blue eyes shine brightly in contrast to his dark sun-tanned face. He favours green and brown clothes to better blend in with the woods that are his working grounds. Dorian relies on his marksmanship with the bow when he can, favouring a heavy boar spear in melee. His green leather armor and weapons all show signs of wear and use although they are obviously well made. Dorian wears the black trousers and brown shirt of an imperial scout's uniform, their badge small on the right shoulder of his shirt. When she was 2, a sickness started. At first, it affected only a few boys, but the healers couldn't find anything wrong. The children just got slowly sicker and eventually died. A few months later, boys -- and only the boys -- started getting sick all over; few survived. Tefere was the tenth to die, leaving Anetra the new heir. Where once each child had a marriage arranged at birth, there were now no longer enough boys to go around. The noble families would compete for marriages now and dowries were instated by the families who still had living boys. As each year went by, the healers tried to find a solution to the problem, trying to heal the boys who had been born since the start of the plague and who had gotten the illness. And as each year went by, competition for noble marriage became more fierce and more dangerous. With a lack of males, the girls were taught everything the boys would have been, which was more than fine with Kanani. When she was 12, the competition caught up with her. Her tutor had been bribed by a more powerful house and had set up a spar between Kanani and the second daughter of that house. The girl, Sanuye Vual, ignored all the standard rules for a fight and in the end, Kanani lay bleeding on the ground, sliced from the bridge of her nose across her check to her neck, barely missing her eye. The tutor and Sanuye ran away, leaving Kanani to find her own help. The healers wouldn't waste spells to heal her when there were already so many girls and they had such pressing matters before them. They gave her family salves and bandages and left them alone. Because of that, she still has a deep scar marring one side of her pretty face. Angry and distrustful of people now, she stayed mostly around her own family. Strange things started happening around the manor, but the strangest was the new manner of Sanuye. Kanani won't say anything about what happened when she ran into the girl again. But the spoiled, demanding brat was now....well...serene, calm, and would follow any order given to her. When she was 15, the healers found the cure. But that didn't help Kanani...or Sanuye. Unsettled by her presence, Kanani's family chose to send her to Garic's City. Besides, since it was obvious that no local boy would marry her, maybe she could find a match among the nobles there. Maybe one of them could tame their enraged daughter. | #19shatteredtowerJun 30, 2003 21:44:43 | War and raids are common with monsters roaming the land. From the mountain, orcs razed Zade's town when he was still a child. Zade lost his father to the raid; the rest of his family fled to a nearby town. There, Zade was enrolled in a local fighting school, in which he displayed a promising degree of skill with daggers. Years later, when the orcs attacked his new home, he was among the defenders. Though the town withstood the onslaught, Zade's mother was among the casualties. Vowing to one day avenge his parents' death, the boy travelled from town to town, seeking the kind of experience and allies he would need. The Silver Sword, in Garic's City. He set out for Garic's the next day, with a single thought in his mind for vengeance, not knowing when and where it might happen. Zade is a little taller then most halfings, though of average build. The penetrating stare of his bright, crystal blue eyes is almost constant. Trained to stealth, he wears only black colours. | #20shatteredtowerJun 30, 2003 21:47:07 | Saoneldi Tyrnea'lyth, or Satyre, is a lean half-elf of average height (5' 9", 150 lbs). He keeps his dark brown hair cut short and combed forward, framing his face. (Think Julius Caesar or Napoleon Bonaparte.) He also maintains some facial hair, trimmed neatly. Satyre's skin is fair and his eyes are a crystal blue. His clothing, though nothing extraordinary, is definitely made of finer material. Satyre can usually be found in a crimson knee-length coat with a high collar and a white frilly shirt spilling out of the top buttons, which he leaves undone. Dark leather leggings and boots complete the look. His right hand bears a signet ring engraved in Elven, with a star emblem in the center. At any given time he carries both a finely made lute and a bow of reasonable length across his back. A quiver rests at waist-height, across from a sheathed rapier. He keeps a dagger strapped to one boot. Satyre's studded leather armor is worn only when circumstances call for it; its condition speaks little of past battles. In fact, nothing from Satyre's appearance would make one think he has seen much trouble in his journeys. | #21shatteredtowerJun 30, 2003 21:48:44 | Arvindur Leafchaser is of medium height for a halfling, but very lean. He keeps his thick, black hair, in braids, through which patches of scarred scalp are still visible. A heavy tan has blended most of the acid burns on his face, long since healed, into an even shade of brown. Wearing a suit of functional, though somewhat pungent, hide armor, Arvindur commonly travels mounted. Wolfkin, his aptly named riding dog, dwarfs his diminutive master, and is by far the better groomed of the pair. Arvindur was raised in the nomadic, atavistic traditions of the Morian Wood. A roving dragon's caustic breath left him disfigured when he was barely old enough to walk. The creature also took his family from him, leaving him to be raised by Cyrrbrand. This aged, childless druid set about teaching the younger halfling his craft, finding him an apt pupil over the years. When Cyrrbrand finally succumbed to age, reluctance to accept the old druid's apprentice as his heir resulted in Arvindur's current position as his people's representative with the Silver Sword. Traditionally, only the druids of Morian Woods ride wolves. The reasons why Arvindur has a dog mount, indicating a lesser status among his people, are his secret.
