*Aramil continues walking along with the other dwarves, he keeps his bow out and keeps a close eye, just incase any orcs might try and attack them. He talks to the dwarves whenever he is spoken to, but for the most part of the journey he keeps to himself thinking and getting his mind set for the goal ahead.

.oO(I don't want ter screw up again, so I'm going to have total focus on this.)

As they hike along, Herdos Ungart speaks of the glorious history of Clan Ungart, with its stately halls and cherished traditions.

We'll go to the Clanhall, and you'll go through a dedication ceremony and of course we'll have a feast, then the Trial will start after that.

Having started out at midday, only a few hours of travel are available before the group must make camp. Herdos grumbles a bit at the rough terrain, but they do their best to make the camp as comfortable as possible.

*Aramil helps set up camp, then when he has got everything set up, including his tent, he goes inside of his tent and gets his bedroll down and everything ready. He puts his pack close by and his weapons in arms range, then he goes outside and sits down near the fire and waits for dinner and talks with the other dwarves, he keeps his bow nearby with a quiver of arrows, just incase.

(ooc: yes his armor is still also on.)

In the morning, Herdos organizes the group and they resume their trek.

Four uneventful days of northward travel along the west side of the mountains brings them to the gates of Clan Ungart's halls. Beautifully crafted stone doors in the mountainside stand open under the watchful gaze of dwarven warriors.

Well, Master Dunskar, here we be.

*Aramil stops walking when he sets his eyes on the beutifual crafted stone doors.

"Why I haven't seen doors made like this is a long long time, not since I've left me home..... Lead me Herdos, for now I am not worthy to enter these doors."

*Aramil bows to Herdos and waits for him to, well do something. While waiting Aramil puts his bow away now that he probably won't be needing it.

Herdos nods and leads the group into the clanhall. Boots ring on the polished stone floor as they stride across the expanse, past groups of dwarves busy with their daily tasks.

Stopping at an ornately carved door, with what Aramil now recognizes as the symbol of Clan Ungart, Herdos lifts the knocker and lets it fall three times.

The door swings open, and Aramil is confronted by the sight of a large table, with solemn faced dwarves seated about it.

The chief rises and demands, Who comes before Clan Ungart?

The Trial of Ungart is not for the weak of body or spirit.

Are you strong of will and flesh? Ready to go forth as did Ungart in the time of Dwarven need?

The questions are posed in a strong voice, with a ritualistic intonation.

"Aye, I am ready ter do whatever it takes to earn the respect from all of the dwarves around here. Even if it brings me to the brink of death and back, I'm ready ter do whatever ye say that I need ter do."

*Aramil bows low again to the chief and when he stands he waits for what he will have to say to Aramil.

Tell us, then, how it is you qualify to put yourself forward as a champion of the dwarven people?

How have you served? How have you excelled in all that it means to be a dwarf?

Any who would follow in the footsteps of Ungart must be the best, the bravest, and succeed on their own strength.

No magic of any kind is permitted in the Trial.

*Aramil takes his time to answer the questions.

"First off I'll be able ter pass the test without any magic of any kind, I know that I will be able ter pass this test on me strength, endurence, and mind. And yes I try my best ter be the best dwarf I can be, I use me skills to the fullest and help out any dwarf who is in need. And I qualify to become a champion of the dwarven people because I will use me skills to protect all the dwarven people when they are in trouble and to destory all who harm them."

*Aramil remains quiet after he spoke and waits for the chief to ask him more questions or to allow him to eat and get on with the trial.

He gets up and then waits for someone to instruct him to where he will sit for the feast, then once it begins he eats as much as he can before his belly explodes so that he will have enough strength for the trial ahead, all the while listening to the story of Clan Ungart.

Long into the night, the various courses of the feast are served.

There are roasted boars, studded with cloves of garlic. Sweet dishes of nuts and dried fruits soaked in nectar. Breads, potatoes, and vegetables in gleaming butter sauces.

Through it all, the clan's bard chants the Tale of Ungart:

Many centuries past, Ungart, founder of the clan that bears his name, sought the aid of Thalos against an orc incursion into the lands of his people. After several days of prayer and fasting, he was granted the vision of a lake, which sparkled as it reflected the light of the stars overhead. Then clouds covered the sky, but still the lake glowed with starry light!

Through day and night and day once more, Ungart sought the lake from his vision, finding it at last with the aid of the setting sun, whose rays reflected from the water to catch his eye. Diving beneath the surface, he was delighted to find a brightly shining boulder, rich with ore, lying on the bottom of the lake. After much struggling, the great dwarf eventually dislodged his find and dragged it to the water's edge, and from there, began the long and demanding journey home, weighted down by his find.

Upon his return, he is said to have worked without rest until he had produced both an axe and suit of mail unlike any had seen before. He had only finished his work when he was required to test them, for the orcs had arrived at the gates of his home, their attack spearheaded by a troll of extraordinary size and cunning. Running, Ungart arrived in time to bar the way after the original defenders had fallen. For hours, it is said, the monster and the dwarf fought, each knowing that the dwarfhome was the stake. Tirelessly, Ungart endured countless blows, but returned strike for strike, until at last he triumphed over the giant and over every orc that tried to get past him after that. Finally, the invaders were forced to admit that the stood no chance against this guardian and withdrew, never to return.

Only then did Ungart allow himself to collapse, exhausted beyond mortal means to remedy. The inspiration did not die with him, however. Even today, any dwarf who proves worthy may be filled with his seemingly limitless energy.--written by Shatteredtower

When the bard starts to tell the story of Ungart, Aramil stops eating and listens closly to the story that the bard is telling. Aramil seems inspired by the story and will do whatever it takes to pass the trial at hand so that he may to gain that strength some day and will be able to defend his kin, and possibly even the people of Garic City.

Despite the early hour, crowds mill about the walkways, watching the strange dwarf go to take the Trial. Murmurings from the crowd suggest they are debating -- and possibly betting on -- his chances of success.

Aramil's escort takes him through long corridors, emerging to a morning of low hanging ground mists. They hike for seven miles, finally reaching a cold mountain lake.

This is the lake where you'll undergo the Trial. First you fast.

The other dwarves go about setting up the tents they'll be living in for the duration of the Trial.

You have fasted and reflected, as Ungart fasted and reflected. Now, as did Ungart, you will seek the great stone within the lake.

When the sun is at its highest point, you will enter the lake, find the boulder, and bring it out of the lake. If you leave the lake at any time without the boulder, you will fail the Trial.

The boulder weighs five hundred pounds, and we have marked it with a light spell.

The bard entertains the crowd, and after a while the clan chief holds up his hands, and the hall falls silent.

In honor of your status in Clan Ungart, I now present you with the symbol of your place.

A dwarf stands forth with a cloth bundle draped across his hands. The clan chief folds the fabric back, revealing a wide belt of finely wrought steel links, a handspan wide, with mithral and gold flashing from it. OoC: Sorry to interrupt, but I've been asked to do a breakdown of Aramil's armor class.

10 = base
+3 = Dex mod.
+3 = breastplate mod. (also grants damage conversion 2)
+1 = enhancment mod. to breastplate
+2 = medium armor proficiency mod.
+2 = shield mod.
+2 = defense mod.
+1 = dwarven defender mod.

24 = Aramil's AC against most opponents.

For the purpose of this fight, there are several other modifiers to factor in:

+1 = Dodge feat mod.
+4 = racial mod. vs. giants

29 = Aramil's AC vs. this one troll

+4 = defensive stance

33 = Aramil's AC vs. the troll while assuming the stance

+2 = Fighting defensively bonus*
35 = Aramil's best AC vs. troll while still being able to attack.

* Fighting defensively gives Aramil a -4 penalty on attack rolls, which would stack with the -4 for using an improvised weapon.

Total defense would give Aramil AC 37 vs. the troll, but he wouldn't be able to attack.

Now to turn to his attack bonus.

+8 = Aramil's BAB (allows second attack at +3)
+4 = Str mod.
- 4 = improvised weapon mod.
- 4 = fighting defensively mod.
+1 = addition to Str mod. gained during defensive stance.

+5 = Aramil's total attack mod. (second attack at +0)

*Aramil smirks as he finally knocks the troll unconsious, then not waiting a heartbeat and listening to the words from his friends, he quickly takes two branches from the fire and throws them on the troll, then he takes two more logs and throws them on the troll. He continues this process until none of the logs are left, then he gets some dry brush or leaves and throws them on the troll to spred the fire. But he makes sure that he doesn't spread the fire everywhere else. So he clears away the dry things that are near the troll that will catch on fire, then while the troll is on fire he goes over and makes sure that there friends are alright.

"Are ye guys alright?"

With the enthusiastic aid of the other dwarves, Aramil makes a bonfire of the troll.

Hey! Since when do trolls wear jewelry? yells one of them, pointing to a gold ring on the troll's hand.

*Aramil scratches his head, then he quickly dives down towards the hand and gets the ring before it gets too hot.

"I dunno... this was me first encounter with a troll. If it is alright with ye guys I would like ter keep this ring, it might have magical properties."

*Aramil nods his head to the dwarves, then he takes a look around the campsite. Noticing it is damaged badly he shakes his head.

"Hmm.... well we mine as well set up camp somewhere away from this troll.... don't want ter be smellin' him all night. So come and give me a hand with this tree here."

*Aramil goes over to the tree and waits for the others to come there. Then at once they try to lift the tree up and push it off there tents. They gather what they can and try to relocate camp a bit further down the path.

Aye, you killed the troll, you should keep the reward.

What if it turns him into a troll, though? Maybe it's a cursed ring, and he'll wake up and be eight feet tall with warty green skin and eat us all!

The other dwarves stare at Tedd, and move to help Aramil move the camp.

*Aramil can't help himself as he laughs at Tedds comment.

"Don't ye worry Tedd, I won't put it on tognite, or for a while until I found out what exactly it does. Now come help me and the others move camp."

*Aramil continues to move camp until they are all done setting up for a second time.

"Well thats better wouldn't ye say? If ye don't mind, I would like ter get some rest, and I have some wounds that I need to tend to. Good night."

*Aramil bows to the dwarves, then he gets in his tent and slowly takes off his armor, so that he won't bother any of his wounds that the troll created. He puts the armor aside, then inspects his wounds. He decides that there isn't anything serious, so he just goes to sleep so that his body will have time to heal itself.

Aramil gets a full night's sleep, and finds himself in rather better shape in the morning. His injuries are still severe, but the pain is bearable and he is at least rested.

The other dwarves have breakfast and tea waiting for him, as they evidently have been up for a while already.

Do ye want to turn back, and see a healer? Or press on?

Aramil recovers 8hp and all nonlethal is healed. Current hp is 35/68

*Aramil gets up slowly and stretches, but then winces from the pain of his scars. He gets his stuff together then once that is done he goes out and gets breakfast that has been waiting for him. He shakes his head at the dwarf's question.

"I'll be alright fer now, if we get into another battle I'll use me bow."

*Aramil quickly eats breakfast so that they can get moving. He cleans up after himself the best he can, then he helps the others take down camp. Once that is done Aramil retreaves his stuff and waits for the others to start moving. Aramil decides that he'll be in the back. He gets his bow out and knocks an arrow just incase.

The group sets out, and continues on towards Garic's City. They keep to a moderate pace in consideration of Aramil's injuries.

Periodically, Tedd suggests Aramil try out the ring, Ye'd make kind of a short troll, but at least we'd know what it does.

It prob'ly don't do anything, Tedd. If'n it did, the troll woulda won the fight.

It nearly won the fight! Aramil was bleedin' all over like a pig before the barbeque! Besides, maybe it's a wishin' ring an' the troll didn't know how to talk? So it didn't use the wishes? An' Aramil could wish for anything!

After three more night's of sleep on the road, Aramil has recovered 24 more hp and is at 59/68. One more night of sleep and he'll be fully healed.

*Aramil thinks about putting the ring on while they are walking, he visions some of the possibilites that the ring holds, some which are bad, others which are good. Aramil decides that since he feels that he is in a good shape from the wounds he took from the troll that he'll try it on anyways. So when they set up camp for that night, he takes out the ring and puts it on in front of everyone while they are sitting down to eat. Then he waits to see what is going to happen to him.

.oO(Hope this durned thing don't kill me....)

Sitting in front of the fire, nothing happens when Aramil puts on the ring.

There is a long drawn-out silence, and finally Tedd says, I think he's getting a wart on his left ear.

He is not, ye numbskull!

*Aramil shrugs his shoulders and continues to eat his dinner and talk to the dwarves, since he is not feeling different then he was before he put the ring on. He decides to take the first watch, so he gets his bows and arrows out of his tent and begins to patrol the campsite while the other dwarves go to sleep.

.oO(Wonder what this ring actually does.... heh, maybe its just a gold ring.... hah, that would be funny.)

*Once Aramil's watch is up he goes over and wakes up the next dwarf to take there turn for the watch, then he goes into his tent and falls fast asleep.

By mid-afternoon of the last day of travel, Aramil can see the walls of Garic's City.

His traveling companions bid him adieu just inside the gates, and head for the Hungry Pelican for rest and refreshment.

And thus endeth the tale of Aramil, Champion of Ungart.
