Sir Darkar Shadowood of the Jackals sets forth on a twofold mission: First, to investigate recent ambushes by a coalition of gnomes and kobolds. Second, to claim a section of wilderness as the Eastern March of Garic's City. Interestingly, the hill on which he is to build his fort is quite near the place where Kai and Jace encountered the ambushers, and their undead minions.

To aid him in this task, Darkar has gathered a group of adventurers:

"If Zeppo's father is still alive and waiting in the neighbourhood to see if any other kobolds manage to get away from the Demmion-worshipping gnomes, I doubt he'll stick around until we've gone back to Garic's and return here. That will just take too long.

Sending Crebain out to look for kobolds is a good idea though. We'll need some time to get back to the camp and prepare to leave anyway."

Ran looks at the little kobold perched on his shoulder.

[Draconic]"Zeppo, do you have any idea where your papa may have gone? Did you have a home away from the bad gnomes, or do you only know that place?"[/Draconic]

Zeppo, shading his eyes with one paw while the other grips Ran's robe, squeaks sadly.

I never was out of the cage before. Mama said we came from over the river. What is a river?

"Zeppo says his mother told him they come from across the river. That probably means the kobolds that ran away headed in that direction. We can focus our search in that direction."

"So you're willing to go and search for the kobolds that escaped? Of you go then....."

As crebain soares of Cassius turns to the group

"I say we start breaking up camp so we can move when crebain gets here"

"That's a good idea. In the meantime, Sir Allegion can refresh himself and have something to eat."

Ran puts Zeppo down and starts stashing his equipment in his backpack and saddlebags.

[Draconic]"Stay close to me, Zeppo. The black bird is looking for your papa."[/Draconic]

Crebain flaps hard, cawing loudly, once, as he attains height. Wheeling around the group, he flies purposefully east.

Sir Allegion sits down on a fallen log, gratefully accepting the meal he is offered.

"Tell me of events in the city, Sir Darkar. How fare my Jackals?"

Zeppo scampers around underfoot as Ran rearranges his gear.

I stay close! What's this? A pan? For food? Are we going to eat? Oh. I help!

Zeppo begins helping the elf pack, adding interesting rocks and pinecones to the mix.

Well he seems to be a good helper. What do we plan on doing with him, if we don't find his father or find out his father is no longer with us?

"Let's see at Hents Manalevins we lost many and I thought all of the senior Jackals, including Lady Tao. I am not sure the Jackal order would have survived if we had lost Lord Malifaeyr as well. It certainly looked that way until I returned from the pass into the city.

When you stayed behind to buy us time to escape, our party got seperated by enemy forces. I was surrounded by enemies I could not see, and my horse was taken down from underneath me. By the time the others and I got back to the river we saw the charred remains of Lord Malifaeyr's horse, but no sign of him.

We saw the dragons circling the area where our main forces were, and we headed back looking for Lord Malifaeyr as we went. Arriving we were greeted with lots of death. I found myself the most senior officer available. I rounded up as many survivors as I could find and ordered a retreat back to the city.

I then went and found the Silver Sword and informed them about what was happening. When we returned to the city I was glad to find Lord Malifaeyr alive although injured."

"Lord Malifaeyr the paid for the services of the Silver Sword to help train new recruits, and help protect the city while we were rebuilding. Sir Gamis, Sir Kemeri, and myself were promoted to commander of Knights to help with the workload.

Other positions have remained vacant, and Lord Malifaeyr took on a more involved role. He lifted the vow of chastity in order to gain recruits faster. Many are mercenaries.

Sir Hermy worked on training some new scouts, and things were going pretty well until they ran afoul of giants. They lost a few scouts, but everything worked out eventually.

Sir Gamis went to gather some information from Hardaja, and it seems that at Hents Manavelins they are searching for something like a door way to bring back the Dark Brother to greater power, if I understood everything correctly. Lord Malifaeyr thinks we will have to move against them sooner rather than later.

A few months ago with the help of some of the Silver Sword, we stopped a group of people who were using an inside man to steal weapons from the order, and then selling them for profit. I think unfortunately they may have been leaving the city with the weapons."

I find it hard to tell. It's good to become a student at a young age, but he still has to get a chance to be a child for a little while too.

I'm actually able to afford to become a teacher nowadays. If he does choose so and it seems to be a a good choice for him, I'll be glad to take him on. But I'd much rather we found his father, so he can grow up with one real parent at least."

Balance? Zeppo stares at the pinecone in his paw. I like apples.

He sets the pinecone on the tip of his snout, and begins walking around, arms wide, trying to balance the thing. It falls some, and balances some.

After what seems like hours, Crebain returns, landing on a tree limb and shaking out his feathers irritably.

She shakes her head

I haven't seen any kobolds in the city either, though I don't think the leader's of Garics would except a race of kobolds running around. Usually they are more found in bands outside the large cities or towns in the wilds ... or from what we've seen, used as slaves for other people's doings.

It's sad to see from a different perspective once you are on the other the side of things. I mean I'm sure before the idea of a kobold was the same if it was a goblin or gnoll, but after what we saw and finding this young one, all aspects have changed... would it have been different if he wasn't a child and a full grown adult able to defend itself?

The elf turns Zeppo and offers the little kobold a few nuts from the small bag he'd stashed away in his robes.

Jace awakens, bound, lying on his side on a cold, stone floor. The dimly lit room is mostly quiet, though he can hear the faint susurrus of scales against the stone.

"He's awake, your Eminence."

Jace recognizes the voice, dimly, and with a twist of his neck he glimpses the outline of the gnome he's seen in the woods, the one that shot him with the arrows, and commanded the kobolds.

"Very good, Xakko, you may return to your patrol. Kill the rest, the kobolds are getting hungry."

The other voice, harsh, comes from the other direction. A shape on a larger shape, on an elevation... As Jace's eyes adapt to the flickering torchlight, the shapes resolve into a small person on an animal.

Xakko bows,
"As you will it, your Eminence." He backs a step, turns and leaves.

The other, the 'Eminence,' rides closer to Jace. A gnome, riding the animated skeleton of a fanged beast. He wears the head and hide of an animal as a sort of hooded cloak, with horns jutting upwards. Streaks of garish red and black decorate his face, and a pectoral of bones on twisted wires adorns his chest.

"I healed you, lowly human, that your final breaths may be spent in the praise of the All-glorious Kakodemmion, Lord of Death, War, and the Light of Darkness. And when I kill you, I will honor you with an eternity of serving him, raising you up in undeath."

His mouth twists in a feral smile.

Upon hearing his doom Jace flops his head back onto the cold stone floor.

.oO(Well look what you got yourself into this time Jace... Just couldn't stay home and pound on 'ot metal. Nooooooo you have to go and screw with "the All-glorious Kakodemmion, Lord of Death, War, and the Light of Darkness.")

Jace just gives his Eminence a hateful glare.

[orcish]"You know how man' times I was hit before I I fell... at least ten... first your pretty little wolf which is dead, then about six arrows. Then some odd pieces of lead... if I was fully healed and with a sword in my free hands. I would kill you your shortness."[/orcish]

.oO(Hopefully he doesn't speak orchish)

The gnome grunts, then sneers. "Bah, you humans all speak Common. You know well what I say."

The skeletal riding beast turns under the gnome's guidance, going back to the altar. The gnome hops off and begins arranging things carefully on the surface.

"You will bleed well for me, human, and your screams of agony will open a portal to the Dark Lord, through which His blessings will flow.

And when you are dead, you will rise in your flesh to serve me."

"What we are gettin' right to it then... An' I know what you said, I just said something I din' want you ta know... I bet you would not fight me one on one, you need an army of lizards to do your biddin'. And It was only for this reason that I fell. You are too cowardly. Your victims are always beaten before you get them. Heal me more and fight me if you dare."

During his speech Jace fiddles with his bindings trying to get free of them.

"You think me ten kinds of fool, human, and I am not. I am high in the favour of our Dark Lord, and high in the favour of the Eternal Flame."

He pauses, and calls, "Come, young one!"

Jace hears the slithering of scales again as a black, winged lizard, two feet long, walks from the deepest darkness to stand by the gnome's side.

With a gloating grin, the gnome looks back to Jace,
"Now listen, human, to the glorious words of Kakodemmion!"

He returns to the altar, ignoring Jace, and raises his arms high. In slow and measured tones, he chants:

All hail to the Son
The strong, the pillar
Who stands tall to the sky
Gazing upon us with eyes of dark fire
Whose feet thunder upon us,
Obliterating the faithless
With infernos of remorseless ire
All hail to He who shall lay waste to the earth
And raise His throne from the bones of yesterday!

As Jace twists his hands within the ropes, he feels them cutting into his skin, which becomes slick with his blood. One hand slides out from a loop of rope, and the whole slackens, allowing him to free his hands. His feet remain bound, with a loop leading up to and around his throat.

Oo.(Eternal Flame???)

"What is the eternal flame... I 'ave never 'eard of it before... What do they want??? and Why in 'ell do they favor you... and i don't know anything about High... yur pretty short."

.oO(Ok Jace makin fun of short people...)

Jace tries to get his feet free while not being noticed. He also searches the room with his eyes looking for some sort of weapon that either he or the gnome could use.

Easily freeing his feet, Jace looks about. The very poor lighting leaves much in shadow, but the room seems quite empty of furnishings or potential weaponry.

The gnomish cleric continues his invocations, his back to Jace.

.oO(Well fine then… I just ‘ave to be patient)

Jace looks about to see if any of the other occupants of the room are watching him too closely, if not he will position himself so he can move as quickly as possible if anything comes near him. Feeling that he hasn’t given the gnome a hard enough time he calls out some more distracting remarks.

“’ey!!! I don’t think Thalos will agree with you makin’ me into a skeleton. I am indebted to one of ‘is clerics… guy seems pretty important too… oh and would you ‘ave the decency to turn me inta somethin’ tough… Those skeletons that you make are pathetic… I killed a couple with rocks off the ground. And why the 'ell did ya pick me to become some weak bag of bones... I would be much better if I was alive.”

As Jace looks around, he discerns a hulking, man-sized figure in the shadows. Ten or so feet away, the poor lighting leaves anything more to the imagination.

The skeletal riding creature, larger than man-sized, is within five feet of the gnome cleric, as is the winged lizard-thing.

The cleric continues to disregard Jace's words.

.oO(Well this doesn' look good... Better sit tight for now. Wait for help or for the midget ta finish with his stuff.)

"Ya deaf or somethin!!! Ya must 'ave worms in yer ears... If ya want ta call those ugly things ears!!!! Can't ya smell the rotten flesh??? or is that nose good for nothin other then makin yur face more ugly then it already is!!!"

The prisoner looks discreetly about for an exit and the layout of the room, trying to find an escape route. Hearing the ringing of a bell, Jace turns his head in the direction it seems to be coming from and tilts his head.

.oO(Wonder if that's normal 'round 'ere.)

Jace turns and looks at the gnome and tries to see if this is something normal.

The gnome ceases chanting, and turns towards the main door with a frown. Shortly afterwards, there is some shouting, and the door swings open. A kobold yaps frantically, and the gnome mutters in his own language, annoyance evident in his expression.

"Well, human, you will have a brief reprieve while I see what is upsetting the slaves."

The gnome walks past Jace, hefting a morningstar in his hand.

"It was nice knowin' ya, ugly... My party is 'ere and they are a little upset by the sounds of it. You may want your companions... You know how i said earlier about how you would die in a one on one wit'... The leader of the group is my friend and the leader of the Jackals, Sir Darkar Shadowood. He is knocking on your door. If I was you I wouldn't answer your door all by yourself. Bring your friends."

Jace turns to hide that he is no longer bound.

Yanking open the door, the gnome glares into the hall beyond, then looks back at Jace.

"What sort of spellcasters did your 'friend' bring with him? And how many in your group?"

"Why should i tell you... Mr. tough guy. It shouldn't matter if he brought the leader of the Hightower, you are the all powerful and un high favor of the inner flame."

The priest's lip curls up in scorn.

"You will tell me, human, or I'll start removing pieces that you won't need when you're undead. We can start with your... nose, let's say, then start trimming the ears. I'm sure you can imagine the possibilities..."

An excited hiss emanates from the shadows, and the priest chuckles.

"Yes, my pet, you may have the scraps..."

.oO(well Jace you opened your mouth again... It would not matter if I lost my nose to him so I am not worth much intact... i had better tell somethin'... what to tell though. i don't really know much about it myself)

"I am not sure...I never asked. And I don't know much about magic myself. We have a couple of religious people out there, an' a shape changer... thats about all I know... we didn't really talk about our skills, just what sort of things we were goin' ta kill."

The priest spits at Jace's feet. "'What sort of things you were going to kill?' And you think to criticise us, who at least have a goal -- a glorious goal -- in mind!"

The sounds of shouts and running feet echo up through the open door, and the kobold crouched there whines softly.

Turning decisively, the gnome strides to a gong near the door, and backhands it with one gauntleted fist. The brass shudders, filling the halls with reverberating sound. Turning back to Jace, he grins maliciously,
"Are you afraid? You should be..."

He calls out a command, and with the dry rustle of bones his skeletal mount moves to stand by Jace's head.

"Scream for me, human. Scream loudly. If he bites your face, you'll be screaming through your blood..."

oO(Well now would be a good time to leave.)

And with that thought Jace rolls away from the skeletal dog, gets to his feet with a tumbling roll, and sprints to the open door running for the the sounds of running feet trying to stay away from the occupants of the room.

"I will never scream for you little one!!!!"

As Jace maneuvers to his feet, the skeleton creature bites him on the head, sending blood pouring down his face. Jace flings himself away, tumbling towards the open door. Reaching it, he discovers that the kobold is just outside, on the landing at the top of a cramped staircase.

A heavy thud on his back alerts him to the ire of the priest, and as Jace turns to this threat, he is assailed from nearly every side. The small black lizard-thing, the skeleton creature, and the hulking humanoid from the shadows. The skeleton's teeth sink into his shoulder, and as the bones crack, he mercifully loses consciousness once again.
