With UnCon approaching, it's time to let you know the plan for the city! We're holding an art contest. Not just any art contest! It's an Any-art Art contest!

Here are the rules:
  • Entries should be relevant to Garic's City
  • Within the boundaries of the CoC
  • If it's big, post a link.

Our Unofficial Artist Laureate, Kywyn, will be judging.

This is your chance to strut your stuff: Poetry, Music, Drawing, Flash animations, all are welcome. Always had a yearning to illustrate the Temple of Ordemetrex? To put Minto's ballads to music? Let your imagination run wild, and then show us what you found!

I'll unlock this thread on the 13th for you to post your contest submissions. If you have questions, concerns, suggestions, or you think something needs to be addressed, email me.

And... HAVE FUN!

Darkar Shadowood
Draws brave imagination
Nobody stands beside

Elven puppeteer
Love fills heart, compassion reigns
Smitten chef wonders

Nine fingers grasp reins
Shine heroic innocence
Simple halfling rides

Wizard dwells among secrets
Studies ancient lore
Pale master hides dark hist'ry

Guardians eternal stand
Lords in spider's trap
Continuity preserved

Stands everwatchful hungry
Grunts growls grumbles gripes
Delicate gut fears spices

Nobody's master
Beware office door below
In halflings he trusts

Nobody's Inn but
Barfights admist filthy slums
Don't let that stop you

And a sketch from me (and this is something, since I generally avoid art like the plague).

The Tale of Hermy the Giant Slayer

I've only got the music for one verse of the melody here, no repeats for the other verses or accompaniments; but it's what I've been able to manage this week. Enjoy.

Hello,

Thanks to all the entrants for the time and energy put into these creations to get them in before the deadline. I've assembled some thoughts from Schez and myself to give everyone the feedback they deserve.

Darkar:
The colors used add something to the visual elements of the image. The pose shows a pensiveness that we don't usually associate with the character. It's a nice reminder of an aspect of the leader's role. The poem goes well with image and conveys a mood to define the character.

Maelut:
The haiku were enjoyable, distilling a character into a phrase is a cool idea. There is a light-hearted, amusing tone that makes them fun to read (a couple sound like OoC humor). Your sketch is a fun one as well. It looks quick and free with your lines, and the picture tells a bit of story.

Ashina:
Interesting and well thought out haiku as well. Yours seemed more serious in tone and focused on each character. An understanding of each character can be read in the phrases.

Codrian:
Good picture there, showing a whole scene with multiple figures. The natural color scheme goes well together, and you can see the effort that went into the montage of familiars.

Redrik:
Just a really cool portrait. His stance and the perspective on the blade give a sense of motion and stability at the same time. The movement and the energy of the character can be felt in his pose and in the eyes. The sepia tinge to the linework gives it a worn but warmer feel.

Natala:
Very innovative entry. Stuff like this song can add a lot to the verisimilitude of the game world. Nice tune that's easy to picture being sung at the Last Lich. Unique and it enhances the work of another player. (It'd be interesting to see Gamis to do a flash where Minto plays that song).

---

It was a tough decision between entries of different medium and styles, but we had to go on which we felt best accomplished the artist's intentions and fulfilled the idea of giving us something intriguing to see/read/hear/feel.

The winning entry belongs to Natala.
And Redrik is the runner-up.

[Prize info for our winner will be coming along when Scheherazade can get ahold of it.]

Congrats to all participants and thanks again for playing.

Congratulations to everyone who entered.

And Nat, if you ever add more to that song... (Hint, hint, actually singing along to it) please post it for our enjoyment.

Yes, thank you again for all the excellent entries! (This was a lot of fun, and maybe we should do something like this during the winter break in December.)

In the meantime, I've confirmed that Natala will be getting a Custom Title and Custom Avatar

I... Wow. Thank you. Very much. This was unexpected.

All of the posts in this thread inspired me, and I have been itching to put some of Minto's ballads to music for a while now, so I did.

Hermy, are you saying you'd like to hear me actually singing along to it? That might be possible, though I can't vouch for the quality of my voice these days. (Eight hours of lullabies today alone.) Might be safer if I posted the lyrics along with the sheet music.

Better your voice then mine. I've been told I've adopted some of Hermy's speech patterns in real life, but I guarantee you I haven't picked up anything from Minto.
