Dec 11, 2007 16:54:45 I'm not a big fan of the Forgotten Realms, but I picked up "The Grand History of the Realms" and I was impressed. Having all that information (names, places, dates, etc.) was really fun: lots of stuff to pilfer for my homebrew.

I ask you: would you buy a Greyhawk version of this? Where all the recorded history of the Flaeness is contained within one tome, with dates and annotations?

Dec 20, 2007 10:22:00 I strongly dislike advancing timelines. But Greyhawk might be a bit different, depending on what all went on in the campaign regions during the Living Greyhawk campaign. I know Veluna had a war that really didn't change much. I would rather see a new gazetteer with the Living Greyhawk updates through 597 CY. Start the campaign out in 598 if they do that.

That said, one of the general ideas behind that campaign is that you were supposed to be taking part in canonical adventures, and that your results mattered. (The end result might not be what you personally experienced, but something has to give eventually.)

My opinion is that Wizards of the Coast is being purposefully silent on Greyhawk right now because they need to let Living Greyhawk finish its course before they even know what they will be able to do with it. (and what they won't be able to do with it) My imperfect understanding of the legal issues suggests that the LG regional adventure material may be harder to use than the Core adventure material, but there's still a lot of Core to go around, so they could probably make at least a partial LG update if they decide they want to.

I wouldn't expect to hear much about Greyhawk from Wizards of the Coast for a while yet. Let LG sort itself out first, and in 2009 we might get something definite.

Dec 21, 2007 8:07:34 Yeah I'm hoping that all the Triads will get to submit revised timelines for official incorporation. I don't play in LG but I was prepared to integrate much of the events into my campaign timeline. It's pretty difficult to work out what the official results were for the regions.

Dec 26, 2007 9:40:43 I would pre-order it as soon as it was announced. I almost bought Grand History of the Realms just for its value as a guide to making something similar. Doing this for Greyhawk would be awesome!

GreyChrondex is an amazing resource, as is Jason Zavoda's Encyclodia Greyhawkian, but both could do with an editing, and some nice production - and just being in a book! Of course, then I want the PDF for the search features.

Dec 26, 2007 9:52:16 The history of Oerth maybe is good, but it shouldn't come out as a campaign setting, last I saw of it, it had exploded, illed by gygax himself. That is what I last heard.

Jan 30, 2008 20:28:16 I'd have to say I was never really too impressed with Greyhawk, especially when my introduction to the setting was the LG Gazateer. The history seemed all over the place, so I found it really hard to get into... and the important NPCs weren't even really detailed.

But, then again, if there was a "grand history of Oerth," I might try picking it up to see if it adds some flavor to the setting that the Gazeteer failed to impress upon.

Who is to say the same cannot be done with Oerth? The major stumbling block, of course, is that for the product to have the commercial punch it needs to get off the ground, Gygax will have to be a contributor as Greenwood was.

Write your own odds on that ever happening!

He recieved no compensation at that point in time, asides for self-satisfaction. If you want a Greyhawk version, get writing! Just as Brian's product was randomly supported by WotC, so too could yours.
