So, I was reading this thread, with its excellent conversion tying the first three modules together and it got me to thinking: couldn't the same be done with the modules, tying them into Greyhawk with Tharizdun? Or would it feel too much like the Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil?

Anyone have any suggestions on this? I'd love to hear from some knowledgeable Greyhawk fans.

Nentir Vale is roughly 100 miles X 150 miles, so a bit over 3 hexes x 5 hexes on the Darlene map.

It needs to be a place ravaged by war: Sterich, Bissel, upper Furyondy, Tenh, Almor, ex-Great Kingdom. Drop the Nerath Empire background from the modules, weave in the locality you choose. Change gods to the most appropriate Greyhawk gods. Tie the NPCs in the modules to the locality.

All of these suggestions are good. The adventures can equally be placed individually since the actual wider setting matters very little in linking them together. You could even try southern Duchy of Urnst, with H1 and H2 taking place in the Abbor Alz and the Celadon nearby in which to place H3. From the P1 previews, you could probably then put this in the northern edge of the Gnatmarsh, extending towards the southern edge of the Celadon.

No clues as to locations of the remaining adventures so from there you'd be winging it. Therein does lie the advantage of placing the whole Nentir Vale;) .

Thanks for the replies, guys, but I was actually looking more for advice about using Tharzidun as an over-arching plot line for the three modules. I'm worried that if I do this, then it will be too similar to the Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil module for 3.0.

I'm still peeved about that whole "Tharizdun = Elder Elemental God" link which the Return to the Temple crowd decided on, and which seemed like such a brain wave to them. I know both entities are inspired by Lovecraft, but they manifest differently and seem to have very different attitudes toward the mortal world. Tharizdun's always been the all-devouring archetype, while the Elder Elemental God seems content to dream away, waiting patiently for the mortal world to pass - reacting with irritation when roused by mortal mayflies...

(What? Stick to the topic? Oh. Sorry about that...)

I think you'll be fine using Tharizdun's cult as your unifying element, Rhen. There are two possibilities: either your PCs haven't gone through Return to the Temple, in which case the notion of people working to free Tharizdun will be new and fresh to them - or they have gone through that module, in which case they will say, "Aha! Those wacky cultists are up to their old tricks again? We vanquished them once, we'll do it again!" So... no, no worries. As long as every adventure in a campaign doesn't follow the same basic line, you don't need to worry that your players will be dissatisfied.

Thanks for the advice, Lincoln. It is much appreciated.

Now, I just have to change the words to a favorite Christmas carol...

"Here comes Tharzidun, here comes Tharzidun, right down Greyhawk way...."

:D
