Hi all -
The last two CF comics weren't working for me last night (Thurs 09/20/07).
But Caddyhawk was. As always very insightful into Greyhawk deities and their inner circle's and now we know what Pelor's been doing with his monthly tithing’s from his heathen followers - using it to golf. At least Pholtus uses his time wisely - looking into the theft of domains by st. cuthbert, and seeing how it could possibly be that Azmodious is subverting the rules to become a god. Inconceivable.

LOL. Well it could be that or Pholtus has no athletic skill. I hear Pelor god of strength can drive the ball quite far. Maybe Pholtus would make a good rules official. ;)

Hi all -
Ok, I've been reading the comics, and excellent work as normal. Except I think that doing more each week is getting to you. Their still long, short and very Greyhawk, but sometimes they're out there (that whole 4 episode golf thing was a bit warped).
But I'm not saying you wrote up the whole chart thing, but if so...I don't think that an ametuer science fiction writer is compareable to an person that plays RPG's. Speaking Kilingon is a bit warped, but then so is drawing cultists.
Be Well. Be Warped Well.

Yeah something is getting to me Theocrat. The length or content is a weekly trial for me, mood and art is tricky. When I get on a 'roll' you end up with something like the Golf series which started out as just a one shot reader suggestion. I have some more Star Wars parodies lined up, so I expect more continuity wrangling from you. Heh heh. As to the chart, no I didn't make that up, its one of those things that is all over the internet. My little brother showed it to me first and it came to mind when I was doing my social commentary on coolness. Any eclectic group can ostracize another group for the weirdest reasons, even when they are similar in type. Table top RP vs LARP is one I see alot, the slightest in musical tastes can lead to bashing too. So I can see cultists of evil gods being in this scenario.

Hi all -
Ok, so Mort, you never read these Waldorf posting as a kid? I remember them as a kid, and wondering what I should do about it. After a couple later issues came up with responses, I realized my world was shot. I remember Travis and Jay - I made their 1st lvl characters start in a cave under a mountain - and the top of the world was like Thundaarr the Barbarian (since that was still popular). I remember their PC's going out in a world that was surrounded by death and gloom. My Dad overheard me describing the setting and telling us to go outside and play (Grew up on Maui, Hawaii).
I do know the product...I can picture it in my head.....its not the AD&D Trivia Game and it's not the D&D Item Cards nor even that Dark Burgundy box with a photo of a guy in robes (Card Master - the Adventure Planning Deck). Wait....damn.damn. It will come to me. Its a 2e product. it's.......
I really liked both of these latest comics. I read your version of the Bleep before watching the movie version - and it makes a lot more sense watching WotC's version.
From the way it reads in yours, you're not moving to 4e? Well me neither. We need to make a consentrated effort to keep the OJ 3e. So harass Rick.
Be Well. Happy Holidays.

Good call GregH. Thanks for the assist Thanael. I never owned the DM Design Kit, but that pic has always stuck in my memory for some reason.

Theocrat: Actually I -do- remember reading the Waldorf issues. I own em. I was reminded of them by the ENWorld thread about him, and in my own perverse search for comedy I dredged his memory back up for everyone! :D
Yeah it will be odd what to do about Oerth Journal's edition preference. We always had Living Greyhawk as a cue to justify adapting to 3E articles, but now I can only see doing 4E-hawk in OJ as a way to preemptively convert the setting before Wizards has a chance. Eh. Either ways I'm feeling defeatist about 4E. I don't like 3E anymore but at least I was comfortable, I like about 25% of what I read about 4E and most of that is only mechanics. Their reimagined fluff and digital intiative stuff is what fuels alot of my venom about 4E. Thank god I'm not a hardcore Realms fan. I know I'll end up at least -playing- 4E because my friends will buy it, they buy everything. Doesn't mean I have to sully my GH with their new PHB classes and races. I'm in a wait and see mode I guess.

Argon

Dec 13, 2007 1:03:57
Mort I also am In a wait ansd see mode however I completely disagree with the new standard races. It seems to me if you what more demonic type PC races you should of just made a Planescape world in 4E.

i don't know I might even go back to old 1E with alot of rule adaptations I made a while ago. Armor was use to lessen the impact of blows it had armor points similar to Dp points from 2E. Except armor points where deducted at equal rate of damage dealt by a weapon. Speed, size, and dex modifiers where used to determine if a characrter had struck someone in combat. so lets say an orc wearing chain mail ac was 5 back in the day. chain mail was issued 25 armor points so lets say the orc is hit with a sword for 5 points of damage. The orc would be unscathed because his armor is a rating of 5 and he would deduct 5 armor points from the damage dealt to the chainmail had he been hit for 6 points of damage the orc would of deducted 5 armor points and 1 hit point. How ever if the orc had 3 armor points left and was hit for 5 points of damage he would suffer 3 armor points of damage and 2 hitpoints his chainmail would then be rendered useless and unrepairable. in order for your armor to be repairable your armor would need to have at least 1 armor point left. the cost to fix armor was 2gp per point of damage and 5gp per point of damage below armor rating. So if you wore chain armor and had suffered 21 points of armor damage . The cost to fix the armor is 5gp for the 1 point of damage below the armor rating and 40 gp for the remaining damage.

This was really useful to PC's at first level but armored opponents where easier to hit then unarmored as movement is not constricted. Though no armor means you suffer full damage. armor also softened the blow of critical attack damage. movement rate determined how hard you where to strike in combat if both characters where of equal size and speed movement rate gave you no bonuses however if one of those characters was in fullplate his movement is halved to 6 against an unarmored opponent with movement rate of 12. the armored opponent would be penalized -3 to hit. The penalty is -1 for every 2 points of difference in each charactes movement rates. lets say a halfling vs a human. Well the difference in movement is or was 6 for a halfling and 12 for a human -3 for the halfling to hit. However the human is a size catergory taller then the halfling which gives the halfling a +3 to hit cancelling out the penalty for speed because of the halflings opponents bigger size.

I also had rules fro hitdie values based on creatures size. So a halfling fighter would roll a d8 for hit point instead of a d10. A halfling thief rolled a d4 for hit points. While medium sized creatures rolled the listed values for their prospected classes. While an Ogre fighter would roll a d12 and an Ogre barbarian would roll 2d8. A Hill Giant size huge fighter would roll 2d8 and a Hill Giant barbarian would roll 2d10 for hit points. Storm giants fighters roll 3d6 and if you had storm giant barbarians they would roll 2d12 if you use Collasal size from 3e then creatures that size would roll 2d10 hit points as a fighter and 3d8 as a barbarian. Although my rules limited the barbarian class by races so cloud and storm giants would not have access to those classes and Dragons would of been baned from those classes if there ever had classes in my game. Those where my 1e days some adaptation for 2nd and 3rd editions. But my 1e days had more house rules then any other edition I ever played.

Hi all -
Is 4th Edition getting to me so much that I don't even find the humor in these? The talk about GH being rebooted, the word play humor, it all just doesn't make me go "hmm."
I really don't think its the creative effort by Mort so much as the lack of gaming desire on my part. I did want to see GH rebooted, but now I really like our flaws and our inconsistencies. NASA and space people are always finding out new things and having to re-write what they "know" and we still haven't even figured out really how the Pryamid's were built in Egypt or by the Mayan's, so why not have those things (unsolved and changing reasons) in GH as well. WE DO.
Thus my desire for GH hasn't waned, but my desire for D&D has and for that I blame WotC. We were told Dragon/Dungeon would stay and would be a place for 3.5 articles - yet they are now the same design elements WotC always placed on WotC.com while at the same time having Dragon. So this lack of creativity (although, I'm sure they're very creative in terms of creating 4e [as they've told us so]) towards 3.5 and Greyhawk in general as the default must be hurting my overall loyalty to 3.5 which then impacts Greyhawk specifically. Too bad really.
My overall lack of desire for D&D has caused me to cancel my bi-weekly game, of several years (we're on our 4th campagin with the same core of people over the past 6 or so years) with each campaign lasting 25-35 issues/sessions.
Thus of course, I still visit Mort's site but is my interest waning because I know that soon enough he may have to begin making fun of a gaming system I know I want no part of? Will that rule set make changes to a gaming world that I've come to know and to love, cherish and obey [not like GH has ever obey'd me, even when we shared the same initials)]?
I know those of us that are 35+ and have gone through 5 editions and adjustments and are seeing another edition on the horizon looking to change our gaming world in yet another way (do we need to modify Mordy and Tenser? will Robilar be good or evil? Do we now clone our PC's at the end of 10th level, before entering the Paragon levels so that we can go back and choose a new Paragon level a-la Tabula Rasa MMOG so that we no longer have to re-hash the early level grind? Thus will there will be multiple Theocrat Issak's out there, some that have the original genetic make-up of the Theocrat that has now entered the Super-duper levels of Theocratism, while Theocrat Issak II is just entering his new fanatic soldier level?
All these questions and more will be raised by more than just a mere Theocrat in the upcoming months. Lets hope that it is not intervening years that keep new questions from being raised. Worse still would be those creative types, such as Mortellan asking these same questions and then doing something drastic - besides drawing squabbling cartoon characters with god complexes - ........ ending more than just an edition of D&D, but a classic area of geo-political commentary that few get and fewer still understand.
In all, I feel I'm beginning to become one of those that now just get but not understand the comments made. But is that such a bad thing?

Be Well.Be Well Cloned.

Ah I love these Theocrat rants! Hang in there dude!

Yeah ever since I finished the Age of Worms AP, and 4E was announced, my GH campaign has been on indefinite hiatus. I want to run the Expedition to GH Ruins but I also am fed up with 3.5 to a degree. And so far I'm less than thrilled with 4E so I certainly won't waste valuable time converting GH stuff to that edition right away. In short, I don't know when I'll ever run GH again!

With the comic I've always tried to stay topical to whats going on in the community. In the Paizo-era topics were abundant and I'll forever thank Mona and company for the material to spoof. Now for 'new' developments in 4E most of my commentary comes off intentionally editorial and anti-Wizards. That's how I feel but I don't want 4E badness to dominate my comic so I consciously pull back time to time and do a goofy pun punchline or a riff on a classic product. For instance next week's will have something from SKR's Scarlet Brotherhood. Who would've thought that 2E book would make me nostalgic?

Jan 28, 2008 10:16:10
Bitter yes jealous hell no. I am happy GH is not the Core world and I sympathize with the affected FR fans who now get the treatment I've rued since 3e. But the real reason I snipe so bitterly at Wizards is they yanked the magazine rights from Paizo and Living GH from the RPGA. These organizations were the true creative talent behind new published Greyhawk material. Now they have mostly moved on to other projects (LG has some time left), so until GH 4.0 gets greenlighted it is my personal challenge to keep Greyhawk relevant in an era where it is irrelevant.

Thanks for the comments Ubber. It keeps me honest. :D
