| #2the_ubbergeekMar 09, 2008 23:13:18 | Gygax was not a bachelor and has several children. Who would be more trustworthy and respecting of the Greyhawk setting than a descendant of E. Gary Gygax? The dude may not know a thing to game design, and frankly.... Now that a few days passed, I hope somebody will bring the problematic points of Gygax's game design philosophy again. I hate sycophantes and the taboo quenching criticism after the death of a figure. |
| #3samwiseMar 09, 2008 23:15:46 | Someone who has used all the published setting material for the past 25+ years since Gary stopped writing it. |
| #4arashikageMar 10, 2008 6:15:51 | Besides, I bet his kids are *really* sick of people asking them DM.... Heck, is there any indication that his kids even LIKE D&D? Besides, I've heard enough bellyaching about Frank Herbert's kid's Dune books, this would be the last thing we need..... |
| #5ranielkMar 10, 2008 9:27:15 | Besides, I bet his kids are *really* sick of people asking them DM.... Yeah, Penny Arcade had something to say about the new Dune stuff. Not necessarily repeatable here. It was mostly based of Frank's stated wish that no one touch his work after he was gone. Christopher Tolkein on the other hand did well with his father's stuff mostly be compiling what was there and giving it just a light polish. |
| #6samwiseMar 10, 2008 12:25:12 | One of the best adventures I own is Legion of Gold, co-written by Luke Gygax. I am sure he is a great writer. The question is not whether he can write, but whether he is up on everything that has been done with Greyhawk. I would not be interested in a completely different Greyhawk that ignores all of FtA and the LGG, as well as those usable bits of LG. |
| #7rauricMar 10, 2008 12:48:00 | Want to trust a gameworld to a player that made Melf the Elf? Is that how far GH has fallen.;) J/K, I am not sure which kid made Melf up. |
| #8ztyxMar 10, 2008 16:59:49 | Besides, I bet his kids are *really* sick of people asking them DM.... Two of his sons made plenty of great work in 3/3.5 DnD. Of course, they might still not appreciate being picked just because of their name instead of through skill.. |
| #9lord_tirianMar 10, 2008 22:04:01 | Gygax was not a bachelor and has several children. Who would be more trustworthy and respecting of the Greyhawk setting than a descendant of E. Gary Gygax? Erik Mona. Gary and his Greyhawk were a very special setting in terms of style and tone - while generic fantasy, it was also a blend of his tastes, humour, likes, attitude, and jokes. Stuff like that isn't necessarily hereditary - but you can find like minds. And I think Mr. Mona does it better. And with less in-jokes ;) Cheers, LT. |

| #16samwiseMar 12, 2008 23:30:03 | Is that a "NO" vote for Erik Mona? Just because it was not on the shelves does not mean the RPGA did not produce a massive amount of Greyhawk material. Regional websites contain reams of information for those willing to use those websites. |

| #18ranielkMar 13, 2008 9:06:56 | Then give me their links. Ummm, dude? Like, maybe, Idaknow www.rpga.com. Then you check out Greyhwak and its got like all these pages about the regions and all these links to the Triads websites. I don't recall the exact link off the top of my head, but Bissel's omnibus (all things Bissel) is on viceandvillany.net. Or was it .com? theocracyofthepale.com has a great site which summarizes all of the RPGA specific rules and summaries of Pale mods. It also links to most other active LG sites. Can't remember Geoff's site either, but it too has many organization documents and history/flavor docs for its players to use to better integrate into the game. In short, reams of info. Go forth, find it, read it before you disparage it and the efforts of the RPGA out of hand! |
| #19samwiseMar 13, 2008 13:05:04 | I will make it even easier: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=lg/region/regionsystem That page has the list of all the regions. Click on the region's name, then click on Triad Website (external). |
| #20twg_prometheusMar 13, 2008 13:05:11 | Nyrond has www.nyrond.org, but it hasn't been kept very up to date for purposes of lore. On the other hand, most of the Nyrond regional plots since CY595 have been relatively small scale, so perhaps it doesn't matter that it's out of date. |

| #22septembervirginMar 22, 2008 19:48:41 | You know, the entire creative teams behind Living Greyhawk could always seek publication of their materials through Wizards. Of course Wizards might hire a few of the most promising individuals. Fate is unknowable. I still think the idea of any of the Gygax family working closely with Wizards (and Hasbro) is a good idea. I hope Wizards does this. Of course, the Gygaxes DO have the Castles and Crusades RPG. Something interesting and beautiful might come of C&C come a time! |

Of course Wizards might hire a few of the most promising individuals. Fate is unknowable. They could, if WotC hadn't cut off funding to them. The only thing that came out of them before WotC made a terrible financial decision is that thick Living Greyhaw Gazetteer softbook. |
| #24elevenbravo20Mar 26, 2008 19:09:25 | Rob Kuntz? |
| #25ranger_regMar 27, 2008 1:47:20 | Rob Kuntz? Ask him, if he's not too busy writing adventures for Pied Piper Publishing. |
| #26armorclass10Mar 30, 2008 23:12:38 | All of these guys do write Greyhawk material, Kuntz and both Luke and Ernie. They can't call it Greyhawk for legal reasons but they never stopped designing material. Just look at Kuntz's site and look at Troll Lord Games and you will see what I mean. Unfortunately Gary's Greyhawk died ( at least commercially ) when he had to leave TSR. Also for those in the know WoTC and the Gygax's and old TSR employess don't exactly see eye to eye or even really want to help each other. There is a huge rift, at least from what I have read online...that being said I hate to say it but there will not be a snowball's chance in hell of it ever happening. But one good thing is they have been and continue to make material for GH, just not allowed to say it's Greyhawk....WoTC owns Greyhawk plain and simple. Also for those that didn't know Melf, played by Gary's young son all the way up to 10th level fighter/13th level MU (with the use of an ioun stone). And EGG's real Greyhawk was different than what was printed up for the 1st edition, in fact his player's were a bit confused by this and he changed his game over to the "commercial GH" to please his players. But like I said a lot of the early heresay is about EGG's homebrew Greyhawk, and Rob Kuntz's Kahlibrun. In fact Modenkanien, who was Gary's character never set foot in Greyhawk, he played in Kuntz's Kahlibrun campaign. So when he wrote the original GH material it's actually a merging of 2 campaign worlds. Also most of the named spells (Tenser, Melf, Drawmij, etc. ) are all old school characters that played in Gary's home campaign. If anyone is interested just PM me and I can give you some fun links to look through. Gems like how in one Greyhawk session the characters ended up on MARS, or about the Machine Level of Castle Greyhawk...LOL. |
| #27ranger_regMar 31, 2008 1:25:34 | Also for those in the know WoTC and the Gygax's and old TSR employess don't exactly see eye to eye or even really want to help each other. There is a huge rift, at least from what I have read online... Cite your sources, regarding WotC and Gygax's rift. As for not helping them now due to the waiting of the GSL, it's not like WotC is going to develop a steampunk fantasy setting anytime soon, at least not for two years. Once the GSL is released by next year, 3PP can start and fill in the market that WotC can't do at the moment. |
| #28armorclass10Mar 31, 2008 8:58:20 | I'll PM you some info....don't want to rub anybody wrong, you know. Ask yourself this, if WoTC cared for EGG so much than wouldn't at least one person show up for his funeral from WoTC? They had exactly zero people there. Plus Gary was very much opposed to anything Wizards did with d20 and was not looking forward to 4th edition. Do some googles on TSR and it's downfall and then you may see what I'm talking about. I'll still send the PM too though, but the fall of TSR or rather the journey that D&D and EGG took after he was forced out of his own company...his baby mind you, reads like a bad soap opera. |
| #29druvasApr 02, 2008 18:33:43 | Hiring Luke Gygax would be great, not just for his name but also for his writing talents. To the guy that dogged EGG, he was the real deal dude. First and foremost, Greyhawk was a really great setting. The old school original modules have yet to be matched by anything publish by WoC (no offense guys, but it is the truth). For example, WoC had so little imagination, they started off by trying to "improve" on some of the greats with the "return to" series. Most of it was garbage. The only campaign setting that even comes close is FR up until the 3rd edition changes. To kick off 2nd ed., there was the Time of Troubles. But again, instead of doing something original to kick off the new rules, WoC introduced the Weave... and then promptly discarded it. Oh yeah, and added portals and new races that just appear on the world...Now for 4th edition, they are completely changing parts of the continent. Thay is now a half mile in the sky... The Netherese are back as Shades (ok that was 3.0), and Chessenta is under water... can anyone say "What???" Way to go. Screw up a perfectly good campaign setting. Ebberron. Where to begin? Let's just say magical refridgerators. I think that says it all. Krynn. Okay that one is pretty okay, not like it used to be but still okay. Alright. I'm done now. EGG was a great writer, storyteller, and all around imaginative guy. He created D&D and without his creative genius, we wouldn't be sharing a good rant. |
| #30druvasApr 02, 2008 18:55:09 | Also, if you want to get a good feeling for how the old schoolers feel, check out the forums at www.dragonsfoot.org The guys that run this site are almost all friends or friends of friends of EGG. I can tell you, they are none-to-pleased with WoC and the 3.0+ rules. In fact abomination is a word that comes to mind. I, on the other hand, have only recently been playing the 3.5 rules and find them to be fairly fun. I think feats are a little rediculous, but the rules cleaned up skills, THAC0, and Saving Throws. I also like how AC is now reversed. It makes more sense to me. Having played 1st and 2nd ed for over 20 years, the old rules were a little lacking. But I think that comes from EGG's desire that people be imaginative and creative, which is something the newer rules have taken away from. Instead of looking in a rule book to decide on an issue, how about the DM make a command decision and artfully express that decision with some quick, off the cuff story telling? That is what D&D is supposed to be about... Not skill modifier checks... |
| #31ripvanwormerMay 08, 2008 13:33:42 | Someone who actually knows and cares about what TSR/WOTC has done with the setting, but wont ignore that for their own creative agendas, like Paizo did? I wouldn't want to see anyone simply ignore the Paizo stuff in favor of their own creative agendas, either. There's good stuff in every version of Greyhawk, and I'd hate to see any of it neglected. I think to some extent, it's a good thing to have a consistent creative vision. Greyhawk has been subject to many different visions over the years; certainly, Carl Sargent had a different one than Gary Gygax, whose vision was different from James Ward's, and Roger Moore's was distinctive in its own right as well. I think Rob Kuntz's stuff is distinctive from Gygax's, for that matter, as is Len Lakofka's. I wouldn't want to see the past entirely hijacked by something completely different, which I think is happening to the Forgotten Realms setting in 4e. I'd rather see a Greyhawk that's set in the late 590s or early 600s CY, building directly off of the 3rd edition incarnations of the setting. But a strong point of view, as the Paizo editors had and Carl Sargent had and Gary Gygax had, can produce good things. |

Want to adapt 3e rules to gygax era setting? HELL NO! Want to convert old school style adventures back to 1e to use in gygax greyhawk? HELL NO! But, want to cling to some foolish pipe dream that Gygax's recent, completely unrelated to GH Lejendary Adventures material is actual "real double top secret genuine gh material, just disguised to get around WotC's meanie pants lawyers"? COME ON IN! They aren't even numerous enough to be considered a niche of the community, it's a handful of idiots and their two faced, whiney moderator. Ignoring them is the best course for anyone who actually wants to enjoy greyhawk and not just kiss Gygax's rear end. And of course, no disrespect to the late EGG intended here. He isn't responsible for the insanity of his fanboys. |
| #33gnytroMay 10, 2008 23:19:35 | I wouldn't want to see anyone simply ignore the Paizo stuff in favor of their own creative agendas, either. There's good stuff in every version of Greyhawk, and I'd hate to see any of it neglected. Your implied assertion that Paizo's stuff is inherently better than everyone's own vision is almost insulting. |
| #34ripvanwormerMay 12, 2008 8:45:28 | Your implied assertion that Paizo's stuff is inherently better than everyone's own vision is almost insulting. I didn't mean to imply that. How on Oerth did you turn "there's good stuff in every version" to "Paizo is better?" Paizo's stuff is part of the mix, that's all. Rich's point was that he thinks Paizo emphasized its own vision at the price of diminishing previous ones, and I'm not advocating that approach. I think emphasizing previous or future visions at the expense of ignoring Paizo's contributions would also be a mistake, however, by the same logic. This isn't by any means a claim that Paizo's stuff was "better," just that it's also worthy of consideration. |
| #35the_ubbergeekMay 13, 2008 13:40:34 | gnytro made harsh words, but he made good points. This kind of things made me always drop from considering trying Greyhawk (along the hostility toward other settings fandom, like 'FR makers who stole everything along the place off GH' and the 'anime/videogamey Eberron' lines). |
| #36darvaMay 19, 2008 12:30:30 | gnytro made harsh words, but he made good points. You'll see that he was spot on accurate in his description of the regular posters there. It's sad really, they close tthemselves off to the rest of the community and material from the setting, and nothing productive ever really comes out of that forum. So, while my language isn't as colorful as Gnytro's, I agree completely on this matter. |
| #37darvaMay 19, 2008 12:34:26 | But a strong point of view, as the Paizo editors had and Carl Sargent had and Gary Gygax had, can produce good things. The complaint a lot of us have (well, some of us at least :P ) is that there is no clear idea of what Paizo had in mind for Greyhawk, aside from using it as a setting for their APs to give them credibility. A large chunk of the material (Sasserine, Cauldron and the surrounding regions) has very little solid Greyhawk content and was obviously created whole cloth just to fit the APs they had in mind, not to further the setting. |
| #38robbastardJul 05, 2008 13:04:42 | The complaint a lot of us have (well, some of us at least :P ) is that there is no clear idea of what Paizo had in mind for Greyhawk, aside from using it as a setting for their APs to give them credibility. A large chunk of the material (Sasserine, Cauldron and the surrounding regions) has very little solid Greyhawk content and was obviously created whole cloth just to fit the APs they had in mind, not to further the setting. The reason why the Shackled City AP has very little GH material is that it was not originally intended to be part of the setting, but Mona retconned it in when he took over as Dungeon editor. The Age of Worms AP on the other hand, fits very smoothly into the setting. As for whether this was done to "give them credibility," I can't say for sure, but I'd be willing to guess it was more likely done because they were more interested in developing & promoting the setting than in sporting their 'hawk cred--Mona had that long before Paizo. |
| #39elfdartJul 20, 2008 14:46:27 | One of the best adventures I own is Legion of Gold, co-written by Luke Gygax. I'd prefer a Greyhawk that wasn't defaced by From the Ashes, Greyhawk Wars and all that nonsense. It is to Greyhawk what the EU is to Star Wars: lame. |
| #40rob_douglasJul 21, 2008 10:33:23 | FtA was awesome - it is what got me back into playing in Greyhawk. Before that it seemed so static and unreal, nothing ever changing. Regardless, I think Samwise's point is important - I don't think, regardless of any one's opinion of the changes, that ignoring some portion of the published history and retconning it out would be in Greyhawk's best interest. Like it or hate it, you have to respect what came before. Except Rose Estes work!!! ROB |

I would like for a 4e GH campaign to start off where the Living Greyhawk campaign ended. Compile all the data from all the regions, fill in the holes where needed, and start it off in 600 CY, two years after the LG campaign. DON'T pull a spellplague doomgrinder vecna cataclysm chaos war. Update the NPCs based on their backstories, not their stats. Use the stats as a rough guide but make them make sense. And make sure the monk and barbarian are updated and published before you do it. It would be cool to have both the standard GH map and a detailed world map in Mercator projection showing EGG's world as he had it mapped out. |

Well, you can start, knowing the monk and barbarian will be there soon enough. I am starting a new campaign in Sterich, approx. 606CY, using the new Dungeon adventure path and assuming Red Hand of Doom took place there in 596 (which is what happened in Living Greyhawk I believe). I started a thread to discuss it, but no takers. I have some summaries of LG events, but not enough for my taste. I would really love a summary that covered the major core adventures - Rary stuff (did they end up killing him in LG?) Nyrond, as well as official word on how Red Hand played out. But I realized starting out there, I can move slowly and update things to 606 myself at the pace of my campaign. I don't know if the Circle is still intact. Some day, I may need to answer that question, but not this year. | #48cuchulainkevinAug 06, 2008 18:47:12 | Gygax was not a bachelor and has several children. Who would be more trustworthy and respecting of the Greyhawk setting than a descendant of E. Gary Gygax? IMO, Gary's children would not be interested. Luke and Ernie did publish 3E material with Troll Lord Games and found the monetary renumeration not equal to the work involved (that was according to Gary on DF). Luke is currently in the military and I imagine Ernie and the rest of the family will have a pretty full time handling their father's IP's. There were also some seroius game philosophy differences between the Gygax's and the current editions that would also make this unlikely. |
| #49cuchulainkevinAug 06, 2008 18:51:36 | The dude may not know a thing to game design, and frankly.... Now that a few days passed, I hope somebody will bring the problematic points of Gygax's game design philosophy again. Lost City of Gaxmoor from Troll Lord Games. What are your design credits, if I may ask? I hate sycophantes and the taboo quenching criticism after the death of a figure. Most people tend not to speak harshly of the dead. It's a common practice and considered good taste. In hindsight, people also tend to take a longer view of a person's whole life. It puts people's contributions in perspaective. My that assesment Mr. Gygax accomplished a great deal. |
| #50cuchulainkevinAug 06, 2008 18:53:24 | Foolish me, actually thinking that Gygax's passing might put a damper on the Gygax Greyhawk fanboys... Foolish me for expecting anti-Gygax fanboys might stop attacking the man even after his passing. |

Melf as a name was a mistake. According to the story, Ernie created a quick character (deaths were fast and furious in 1E days) and wrote M.Elf (as in male elf) on the character sheet instead of the name. When the character survived and prospered, the Melf became the characters name. It may seem too lack creativity, but I imagine Ernie was a young teen at the time. |
| #52cuchulainkevinAug 06, 2008 18:59:14 | Erik Mona. I agree that Eric Mona did a great job keeping Greyhawk alive in the 90's. He deserves a great deal of respect for his efforts. |

NOTHING is allowed that doesnt fit their narrow view of the setting. Really? Dragonsfoot is a site devoted to OD&D and AD&D. What would the reaction be If I started posting 1E related opinions on the main board here? There has never been a problem discussing converting 3E material to 1E over at DF. In fact, you can find tons of discussion of Necromancer Games, Paizio Publishing and Goodman Games products at DF. Pro 3E discussion was banned there due to the fact the all the threads would devolve into Edition Wars. In fact there are many people who play ALL the editions of D&D on the site. And in actuality Mr Gygax's LA material (as well as his DJ and C&C material) do contain a lot of Greyhawk material. If nothing else, DF is good to hear how the material does relate in a historic context. are slobbering fanboy sycophants. As opposed to the super-friendly WOTC boards? |

Because for my experiences there, I found ton sof links to free adventures and material relating to Greyhawk. Why would 4E discussion go over well on a board devoted to 1E? And for your inforamtion later edition Greyhawk is discussed at DF in the TSR World's forum. The Gygax Greyhawk forum is devoted solely to (surprise) Gary Gygax's version of Greyhawk. |

A player or DM can bring his remarks, and do you think Gygax and his designs had no detractors? The problem is that you can reverse that, and it had been shown in history that the recent death of a controversial figure is used to block and crush criticism and allowing only positive words out. That is what we see here, Gygax did much things... but his legacy had issues, as shown by the changes brought in this edition. CuchulainKevin, what about anti threads? It seems to me a double standart in potential. And frankly, if you think those boards here are so biaised on the pro side... bad, bad error. Just look at the raging flaming and fighting now and then. |
| #58cuchulainkevinAug 06, 2008 19:37:19 | A player or DM can bring his remarks, and do you think Gygax and his designs had no detractors? I agree that there were many things that Gary Gygax subscribed to that I did not agree with: negative AC, demi-human limits, the fixation with a jillion tables instead of a unified resolution system. Then again, he pretty much (along with D Arneson) created this the hobby. Others have come along and had made great contributions as well. There are some of prefer the older editions- they are not wrong, because those editions fit their gaming tastes. There are more who prefer the new edition. They are not wrong because that editions suits there taste. I fail to see the need to insult others preferences in these matters. My comment related to you had to do with the fact that you were very dismissive of the material that Ernie and Luke Gygax have produced. Having met and talked with both men (albiet briefly) I would agree that they most likely would not be interested in personally producing new Greyhawk material. That doesn't lessen or cheapen their contribution to rpg's. |
