Just keep cool. Cool

The world of Greyhawk isn't as detailled as the Forgotten Realms. In Greyhawk each DM  is supposed to come up with his own version of large parts of land. Does you DM own (and use) the 1st edition Valley of the Mage supplement? Apart from that book you'll hardly find anything detailled.

Uhhh, I think you missed about a dozen or more Greyhawk books, detailing various areas. You can find a BUNCH of second edition stuff, and some first edition, in gameshops that sell used stuff, as well as Ebay. Here's some: Iuz the Evil (lands Iuz controls); Greyhawk Wars box set; From the Ashes box set; The Marklands (Furyondy, Nyrond, conquered Shield Lands); Rary the Traitor; Die Vecna Die; World of Greyhawk box set (1st ed.); Greyhawk Adventures hardback book; Vecna Lives; Against the Giants- the Liberation of Geoff 2nd edition (includes the 3 original 1st edition modules); Slavers (Wild Coast, Nyr Dyv, Pomarj); The Scarlet Brotherhood; Greyhawk Player's Guide; Greyhawk- The Adventure Begins; Greyhawk Ruins; City of Skulls; Vale of the Mage; Ivid the Undying (FREE DOWNLOAD, the address is on this site somewhere.) Several of the books I named include things like the numbers and types of troops evil (and good) guys have, stats on leaders/rulers, local maps, identity of spies, and other details. Dozens of the old, original 1st edition modules are set in the Greyhawk campaign (the Drow series, Temple of Elemental Evil, Lost caverns of Tsolcanth, Forgotten Temple of Tharizdun, and many others.) There's several 2nd edition and 3rd edition modules for Greyhawk, too, and a few 'Return to' books for some older modules (TOEE and Greyhawk Ruins most notable.)

Well, I understood the OP's desire to be not to become a Greyhawk sage, but to prepare for running a character as a player... The complete list of Greyhawk-related material seems to be a bit overdone in this context. Laughing

True, you don't need all that as a player... but if he can pick up a few of those books listed, he can find out more about the campaign world as it was published and create characters with it. Living Greyhawk Gazeteer would be good for an overview, and Against the Giants will be tantamount to cheating--- just don't tell the DM you've memorized the adventure module ahead of time! I'm just glad Greyhawk never got so overpublished like Forgotten Realms, 'Volo's guide to Jim the Baker's basement' or 'Volo's guide to really boring little villages adventurers should avoid'.
