| #1tildeseeSep 26, 2007 5:25:35 | Yo, all! Now, in a lot of posts, especially in the "Monsters" forum since the "Demons and Devils" bomb was dropped, I've seen folk taking umbrage at, "Greyhawk/Planescape being destroyed(sic)," and other such end-times talk. I personally have to say, "nay," to all of this naysaying (yay double-naygatives :P). Personally, I think that finally not using Greyhawk as the baseline 'default' setting for D&D finally gives WotC the chance to bring Greyhawk into it's own. By not having it as baseline (and the same goes for the Great Wheel cosmology) it means that they can do whatever in the core books, and then be able to come up with custom mechanics and fluff (class, monster, etc) specifically for Greyhawk and the Great Wheel without having to ensure it is generic enough to be treated as a baseline. Dang, I had a lot more to write on this, but it all seems to have left my head. Anyway, I have to say that I'm happy with everything that I've seen thus far for 4e, and I hope that Greyhawk finally gets the full treatment it deserves (even if all it gets is a few books, thats more than it really got in 3.x). Anyway, that's just my thoughts on it. I could be wrong, but my optimism and egotism make me doubt it. Thoughts, comments? ~C |

Seven years later I am glad to see that it would not be considered to be the core world. It disturbs me greatly to see WOTC strip Greyhawk of what they perhaps feel are the "best of Greyhawk" such as various deites, Castle Greyhawk, and so on. Nothing would please me more than if the spotlight is once again thrust upon Greyhawk and development rings true to its rich history placing the ideas stripped from it and placed where it originates in the manner that it was intended. It is in the best interest of WOTC and the fans to remove any generic approach to the world which may have resulted from 3rd and 4th edition and once again make it unique in the most positive means possible. |

During 3E, all of the core books were written as generically as possible. (Note that the 4E core books don't appear to be even attempting that, with the references to the past empires of Nerath, Arkhosia and Bael Turath found in the first preview book.) The novels based on the iconic characters were set in a different setting entirely. The most that WotC would do was use a Greyhawk name here or there, but they consistently avoided specifically setting anything in Greyhawk (notable exceptions including Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil and Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk). They even squelched Paizo's efforts to put more Greyhawk in the magazines. So now? Now Greyhawk is free. Any treatment it gets in 4E will be better than its mistreatment in 3E. |

Fluff has always been abundant for Greyhawk, but acceptable crunchy rules have not. No one has written a Players Guide to Faerun equivalent for Greyhawk, that includes PrCs and rules like that. To really do it right, they need to license the setting to someone (Paizo) that loves Greyhawk and could really go to town on creating for it. ROB |

License it to someone who really cares about it. Perhaps all the LG peeps could start a new publishing company for WoG material??? |
| #6akossApr 06, 2008 19:48:44 | I just don't see any way they would licence GH out to another company. They've already said they are creating adventures in 4th edition that will use prominent GH locales - the Temple of Elemental Evil & the Vault of the Drow. GH has the most recognizable adventure locales in the game and I think they're going to milk it for all it's worth (even if they convert them to more "generic" locales). However... seeing as they are updating one campaign setting per year, it's inevitable that GH will get updated at some point. |
| #7pauln6Apr 08, 2008 7:26:29 | If I'm honest, I'd rather they just updated a few locations rather than re-vamped the whole setting. It would get tiresome if they just updated a load of iconic well-known locations like ToEE or VoD but something is better than nothing. I'd be more in favour of articles in Dungeon or Dragon adding some meat to the bones of locations that have never been detailed before. For example Loftwick, Rel Astra, Rel Deven, or the city of Gorna after its recapture by the allied forces in 595 CY. |
