Hullo

My gaming group has decided to tackle Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil starting at level 4 and I need some character advice please.

See my group has decided to do it with an evil party and oddly engough I've never built and evil type before. I am thinking Cleric of some kind, possibly an archer build. But I can't choose a race or god.

I am not a fan of the std races really and often end up playing more 'exotic' types, Half Ogre, Minotaur, Bearfolk etc cos I like playing 'monsters'. In this instance though its been suggested to me that I need to look at something that can pass in the 'good' towns of the adventure or risk getting kicked out or lynched

Thus I ask- what race would make a fun evil Cleric, preferbly with a monsterous element?

Also any fun to play Evil Gods out there?

Well, what could your reason be to be going in there. Are you trying to stop something - or start it? Iuz would be an interesting choice for whom to worship. In that case, half-orc or Orog are good ideas, but not going to sneak in on any good towns. You could be a follower of Vecna and be sneaking in to learn what is going on - your god feeling a little left out. In that case, you could go for a more exotic race, like an Ethergaunt if your DM allowed. Then take Cleric and Mystic Theurge. Or perhaps a spellweaver. But I think the LA of each of those could put them out of reach for you. A level limit of 4 either means not too exotic, or something that is along the race as a class path, ala savage species.

I think an interesting idea would be to allow an evil aligned character to worship Tharizdun. His clergy's treachery and infighting are legendary. Your player character could see himself as the only worthy to lead the Dark God's church on Oerth. He or she could be in search of the church's elements as means to kill existing leaders, making his way to the top in a display of his might and worthiness to eventually replace Hedrack.

I don't have any input on allowed races. I'd stick with the standard races. Maybe allow drow or tieflings.
