And the lands to the far west of the Sea of Dust get development.

I get around that with my players by intentionally mispronouncing that name, saying it "Jee-off" instead of "Jeff". (I also speak the name Heironeous as "Hair-oh-knee-us", as well, to avoid the looks on players faces when they realize that the God of good-aligned warriors is, ahem, "erroneous"...)

Nov 03, 2007 22:22:30 Hmmm ... I started this thread after reading The Spider King (1965) by Lawrence L Schoonover. I quite enjoyed the way in which the nation of France was in a state of flux. Unlike Greyhawk's nations, the nations of the 15th century were much more tenuous.

The novel also made much of the development of cannons and the way in which they changed warfare. Their were some great 'charge of the light brigade' type scenes with chivalrous knights charging directly into cannon fire to rescue this Lord or to answer a challenge from the enemy.

The 'historical' world Schoonover brings to life caught my imagination more than any fictional world has for more than a while.

Nov 05, 2007 14:27:11 Unfortunately, unless you're charging a massed contingent of the White Paladins of Murlynd, you won't see any scenarios like that in a Greyhawk campaign, since they're the only beings on Oerth who can get gunpowder weapons to work.

PS DRUIDS WITH STEAM ARTILLERY AND A HEAT METAL SPELL CAN LEVEL A CASTLE.

Feb 15, 2008 7:23:36 I think the Greyhawk supplement was written by Pluffet Smedger the Elder in 998 CY. One of the things he noted was that magic was almost completely absent by this time. So low magic PoL.

In CY1000, I hope Greyhawk looks much as it does today. maybe some States are gone, some new ones have arisen. Perhaps more of Oerik has been explored and resettled. But, knowing WoC, there will probably be some 3 or 4 cataclysmic events that destroy and remake the world to suit a new product they are pushing... Sorry, there goes my cynical side.
