| #2gazza555Jan 23, 2006 9:24:30 | Alright, it seems like creating these threads has become my job That's right ;) Its funny, when I started the Catch up with Ravenloft thread I thought that was a nearly impossible task. Now we've beaten not only RL, but OOP and Planescape as well. And we're close to 2,000 posts more than RL. Makes me think we could even take out the Athas crowd. What do you think? And then FR and Eberron ;) Regards Gary |
| #3dave_lJan 23, 2006 9:41:05 | So long as they don't delete our Catch Up threads - that would set us back a bit! ;) Edit: Ravenloft thread 415 posts, Planescape thread 127 posts Although I think the Greyhawk thread will be "current" for a lot longer than those two were. ![]() |
| #4maddogJan 23, 2006 10:19:03 | I'm a fan of both settings!!!!!!! ![]() --Ray. |
| #5gazza555Jan 23, 2006 10:23:15 | I'm a fan of both settings!!!!!!! Just as long as you post as many, if not more, here than you do on the GH board. Regards Gary |
| #6mrfilthyikeJan 23, 2006 10:25:47 | I'll post here, but Eberron is my second favorite after the Known World. ;) But I'll help dethrone GH. :D |
| #7maddogJan 23, 2006 11:52:58 | Just as long as you post as many, if not more, here than you do on the GH board. Luckily, I only post here on the Mystara board. ![]() --Ray. |
| #8havardJan 26, 2006 11:25:53 | I'm a fan of both settings!!!!!!! I don't think this thread implies that you cannot like any of the other settings. I love this competition that we have created between the boards, but I like many of the other OOP settings as well as a few that are actually in print (such as Eberron). Still, I always cheer for the underdog, and once Mystara has beaten Dragonlance, I will post more on the other OOP boards... :D Håvard |
| #9thorfJan 27, 2006 0:13:17 | I don't think this thread implies that you cannot like any of the other settings. I love this competition that we have created between the boards... Yes, I agree. These threads aren't really supposed to be negative about other campaign worlds, just positive about Mystara. I love the way these threads give us a place to have general conversation, without taking other threads off-topic. Too much of that can be a bad thing, but just a little allows us to form a much closer community, I think. Most of all, it's so nice to have something to work for - to have the motivation to post more, and to contribute more. I did a similar thing with myself in the first lot of postings of my maps, by making the commitment to post one every day. With Mystara as open, and in some ways static, as it is, motivation is something we all really need, I think. Which reminds me: CONGRATULATIONS! to everyone for passing Planescape!! :evillaugh ![]() |
| #10gazza555Jan 27, 2006 8:06:59 | I did a similar thing with myself in the first lot of postings of my maps... So will there a second lot ;) or is RL too busy? Update time... Greyhawk: 6324 (-63) Regards Gary |
| #11gazza555Feb 06, 2006 3:32:02 | Oops! Forgot all about it, but here it is a little late. |
| #12dave_lFeb 06, 2006 6:15:30 | Looking at those figures, if the Dark Sun forum has already been pruned, they'll overtake Dragonlance very soon. Now that would be a real upset, if you ask me. ![]() |
| #13havardFeb 06, 2006 8:29:10 | Looking at those figures, if the Dark Sun forum has already been pruned, they'll overtake Dragonlance very soon. Indeed! If the pruning is going to be as unequal as it seems, this will certainly turn things around here. Most likely though, the DS forum has not been pruned yet. (or they have been writing like rabbits! Rabbits? Well, something that writes fast.. :P ) Håvard |
| #14CthulhudrewFeb 06, 2006 11:51:29 | All I know is that those Dark Sun guys are pretty dang active and/or fanatical about their campaign setting. Good for them, but it means that it is highly unlikely we'll ever be seeing a "Think We'll Catch Up With Dark Sun?" thread. I'd have sworn they must have been having a "Catch up with Dragonlance" thread of their own, but I haven't seen anything over there. |
| #15zombiegleemaxFeb 08, 2006 8:46:56 | Makes me think we could even take out the Athas crowd. What do you think? No. ;) |
| #16mrfilthyikeFeb 08, 2006 8:52:46 | All I know is that those Dark Sun guys are pretty dang active and/or fanatical about their campaign setting. Good for them, but it means that it is highly unlikely we'll ever be seeing a "Think We'll Catch Up With Dark Sun?" thread. Yeah, Dark Sun fans are fanatical (like Mystarans ;) )...I'm guilty as I love DS, I just don't like care for the conversion going on there...If I wanna play 3e DS I'll do my own converting. ![]() |
| #17havardFeb 08, 2006 13:33:45 | No. Hehe, catching up with Athas does seem like a long way to go yet, but we'll see. Thanks for helping out! I was always intrigued by DS myself, but never got a chance to play it. I bought the Dragon and Dungeon issues with the 3E conversions, but later heard the hard core DS'ers didnt care for them. Maybe its not that bad that Mystara wasn't given that treatment? We'll see what Bruce is providing for us in issue #341.... :D Håvard |
| #18zombiegleemaxFeb 08, 2006 16:34:32 | Hehe, catching up with Athas does seem like a long way to go yet, but we'll see. Thanks for helping out! DS was a great setting and then they put out a Meta Plot that radicly changed the setting. Some people like me, like the change, others hate the change. The 3.0/3.5 treatment Dragon/Dungeon gave it pushed it 300 yrs in the future and made it like the origenal box set. The OTHER offical converstion keeps the current timeline and develops it with existing materal. (www.athas.org) /// Rules wise the athas.org version is ballenced, the other is not IMHO - What do you nort like about there convesion - |
| #19havardFeb 09, 2006 9:42:49 | DS was a great setting and then they put out a Meta Plot that radicly changed the setting. Some people like me, like the change, others hate the change. I wasnt aware of that happening with DS. I guess TSR did that to most of its settings. We had the Wrath of the Immortals, FR had the Time of Troubles and Greyhawk and From the Ashes. It sounds like, in all of the settings TSR managed to split the fanbases between those who liked the old stuff and those who preferred the new world order. Way to go TSR... Oh well :D Håvard |
| #20dave_lFeb 09, 2006 10:43:14 | I wasnt aware of that happening with DS. I guess TSR did that to most of its settings. Having bought WotI on ebay, I have to say - old stuff! ![]() Although much of it was interesting, I couldn't help thinking "What are they doing to my Mystara with all these changes?" As you said - Way to go, TSR. How to split your fan base in one easy lesson. |
| #21CthulhudrewFeb 09, 2006 11:04:23 | I wasnt aware of that happening with DS. From what I recall (unless P33KAJ3W was referring to some other metaplot), the Dark Sun MP came in the course of their novels, which were supposed to complement/showcase the new line, but which ended up with most of the Sorcerer-Kings dying, some Templar becoming a living raincloud, the Dragon dead, and some weird history where the halflings obliterated the planet, leaving it in its current state. Odd stuff. Frankly, I liked the concept of Dark Sun initially, but the novels just put me off completely. They were not very well written, the characters were only memorable for how obnoxious they were (the one good character was killed off in the course of "his" novel), and again, some weird stuff. The part where the giants were cutting off their own heads and replacing them with animal heads stands out in my mind as one of the stranger bits. So, yeah, they set up the setting- which, IIRC, was developed at the same time as their novel line, so they already knew the direction they were going in- and then changed the setting over the course of the release of the novel line. A very strange way of going about things. I did rather like the Simon Hawke books about the Multiple Personality Psionic character, though (which are the only Simon Hawke books I like; I started reading a Shakespeare mystery by him which was just horrendous). I think the concept of a desert world was a bit too stale, from a geographic perspective, to sustain an ongoing campaign. Then again, the "known world" of Athas was a relatively small part of the planet, so expanding it to include some large bodies of water and different ecological settings wouldn't be too hard, and needn't necessarily detract from the bleakness of the setting (if done correctly). |
| #22MortepierreFeb 10, 2006 6:11:10 | In any case, we need to deal with the Hawkers first.... :D Not a chance :fight!: |
| #23gazza555Feb 10, 2006 6:40:16 | Not a chance :fight!: Oh yes we will, thanks for the help. ;) Update time. Greyhawk: 6230 (-36) Regards Gary |

| #29HuginFeb 19, 2006 21:45:10 | Once again I was away for a milestone. Just got back from a weekend trip up to Ottawa. Lots of fun and lots of COLD!!!! Anyway, I have to finish all the reading you guys have created. Boy there's alot! 12,000 Posts! I thought it was great when we 1200. Have we grown or what?! |
| #30havardFeb 20, 2006 6:42:15 | 12,000 Posts! I thought it was great when we 1200. Have we grown or what?! Yeah its crazy isnt it? ![]() The sad part of this story is that the traffic over at the MML has all but stopped. OTOH, our discussions here are more visible. Håvard |
| #31gazza555Feb 28, 2006 7:39:19 | Its been awhile so... Update time Greyhawk: 5960 (-190) By the way, has anyone else noticed that the 'Other Worlds' link is missing from the main DnD boards page? It makes it that more difficult for the general gamer to stumble across the joys of the old settings,(well Mystara ;) . Regards Gary |
| #32gazza555Mar 07, 2006 7:13:58 | Might as well update the current thread as well. Greyhawk: 5902 (-58) Regards Gary |

| #35gazza555Mar 08, 2006 7:25:13 | I'm assuming that should read 6th Feb and 6th March? Close. It should have been the 7th March, and I should have removed the comment about the OOP board, darn that copy n paste. :embarrass Changed Regards Gary |
| #36CthulhudrewMar 23, 2006 12:50:10 | Just thought I'd update this thread: Greyhawk: 5,964 (+64) Yikes!! They're gaining on us! We're losing our momentum!!! |
| #37thorfMar 23, 2006 14:33:42 | Things have been rather slow lately, indeed... But now that Marco is posting again, and OldDawg is keeping us busy with his projects, hopefully we can regain our lost ground. |
| #38jakob_pawlowiczMar 23, 2006 16:17:46 | Loosing Momentum.....? The count is only measuring quantity. I feel that the average post on this board should be counted, at least, twice in this measure, due to the high quality of these. ![]() Anyway my ramblings has increased the lead we have....... :D ![]() |
| #39HuginMar 23, 2006 18:29:53 | I HAVE to find time to contribute again (other than just encouraging other people for their contributions). I feel a little guilty for slowing down so much, but I still read everything posted here (and on the MML). I guess I shouldn't feel too guilty though, after all, I have posted over 1000 times ;) . The quality of the work posted here is incredible. Well done everybody! |
| #40spellweaverMar 24, 2006 3:06:22 | I guess I shouldn't feel too guilty though, after all, I have posted over 1000 times ;) . Damn! I am only at 859 posts (counting this one). I'll have to get back in the saddle again. These past six months have really set back my average posts/day... Problem is, now that I am working instead of writing my thesis I find I have even less time to contribute ![]() :-) Jesper |
| #41zombiegleemaxMar 24, 2006 3:40:49 | Ah! Jesper you've discovered the hard truth: for all the money you earn working, you loose all the freetime you had while studying ;) |
| #42Traianus_Decius_AureusMar 24, 2006 8:05:57 | Work- the great time sink. Definitely cuts into time for everything. My theory for us losing ground is that they have created a "Think we'll continue to stay ahead of Mystara?" thread. |
| #43gazza555Mar 29, 2006 7:14:35 | I guess I shouldn't feel too guilty though, after all, I have posted over 1000 times ;) And to think I was quietly pleased when I passed the 500 post mark. Regards Gary |

| #46HuginMar 29, 2006 13:48:16 | Ah! Jesper you've discovered the hard truth: for all the money you earn working, you loose all the freetime you had while studying ;) That's my problem: working and studying! So many things I want to do I get these cool ideas (to me anyhow) in my head that I'd love to flesh out and have the community work on together. One of them was a fleshing out of Mystara's religious organizations, in a similar way the Church of Traladara and Church of Karameikos are done in Gaz 1, and the role/influence of each 'member' Immortal and their followers.Time management! Time to get strict with it. (Btw, I hope I didn't sound as if I was bragging about my posts . I'd bet there are others here that top me, and with more quality contributions.) |

| #57HuginApr 03, 2006 11:57:53 | WOW. I know that Mondays are traditionally a boom day for posts here, but you guys have made me use up most of my time allocated to working on tonight's session! :D ...it's just your monitor. You're right! I gave it a smack and it's displaying things the way they're supposed to be now! ;) OK, I really have to work on tonight's game (the guys are really excited - first time in the Hollow World!). It's part of WotI, but instead of going via Aegos, they arrived using Atruaghin's Mystic Conveyor (one of the characters is from the Bear clan and worked much better into my game). They've met the Atruatolco and heard of "great wooden Hiaks (giant eagles)" carrying men. The PCs are about to reallize that these are Heldannic Warbirds since two of them are from Vestland. This will (hopefully) lead them to Haldemar and Alphatian Neatharum, etc. |
| #58gazza555Apr 04, 2006 3:16:29 | I gave it a smack and it's displaying things the way they're supposed to be now! ;) Ah! Tech support at its best. ;) Anyway the reson for the post is to point out that we have passed the 13,000 post mark. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Regards Gary |

| #64thorfApr 18, 2006 6:23:46 | Well at some point over the long weekend Dark Sun overtook Dragonlance. I was thinking that the update was pretty small, until I realised that those 25 posts are all since the last update, which was less than 20 hours before this one... :D |

| #74thorfMay 15, 2006 7:08:17 | This is great! The stuff from 1st May to now is all going to stay, and instead the dates for disappearing posts have changed to 31st May to 12th June. In other words, we still have to go through a period where posts will disappear after a week or two. |

| #77HuginMay 16, 2006 10:33:04 | It's interesting that Mystara beats Eberron in Japan. Thorf's been working hard over there, eh?! :D I'm not surprised by the Italy and Brazil results actually. Since I have discovered the Mystara net community I've noticed Mystara has a strong following in those regions - good job guys! It appears we have a lot of work to do here in Canada. But on the bright side, I've seen an increase in Mystara fans from here. |
| #78gazza555May 16, 2006 10:56:23 | Thorf's been working hard over there I wonder if we can narrow it it down to one city. ;) I'm not surprised by the Italy and Brazil results actually Me neither, but it's nice to see the 'proof'. ![]() On a positive note, the fact that Mystara has appeared on the graph and is rising can only be a good thing. The Greyhawk line on the otherhand shows a slightly downhill trend. I did try more specific terms: Karameikos, Glantri, Pandius etc - but there wasn't enough data to work on. ![]() Regards Gary |
| #79wilhelm_May 16, 2006 11:26:28 | Me neither, but it's nice to see the 'proof'. Unfortunately, K:KoA was the only mystaran book translated to portuguese (at least here, in Brazil); So, part of the texts in portuguese about Mystara tend to be very non-cannon or superficial. Part of it also refers to an Ultima Online server that is called Mystara too (but, as far as I know, isn't related with our Mystara). But we are redeeming ourselves... Or, at least, I'm doing my part :D By the way, while testing what would come while looking for "Mystara" in Portuguese, i just found one old work I've done for the rpg website Os Arautos (The Heralds), that unfortunately no longer exists. There is almost nothing there now (although I'm surprised that this still exists!), but I guess you guys would like to take a look ![]() Don't forget taking a look at the links. How many do you recognise? :D http://members.fortunecity.com/mystara/ |

| #87zombiegleemaxJun 03, 2006 10:11:24 | And people like me need to stop vanishing for long periods. Back to lurk mode now. I would be more active but I have a baby girl that is quite demanding and a business on the rise. ;) Which reminds me, I have a network meeting to attend. |
| #88gawain_viiiJun 03, 2006 10:18:57 | I'll be in lurk-mode for a while, as well. I'm recovering from a hernia surgery, while trying to re-create all my Mystara d20 work which was lost in a HD failure. I'll still pop in from time to time, but will mostly just be reading. Roger |

| #91thorfJun 14, 2006 3:13:46 | So, how has the Board upgrade affected things? It hasn't yet, since these are still the old boards. It looks like there may be another delay. By the way, you will know when the new boards are here, because aside from having a message at the top they also look a little different. |
| #92havardJun 14, 2006 3:26:39 | It hasn't yet, since these are still the old boards. It looks like there may be another delay. Ah, thanks! I assumed since the announcement was gone that the update had been made. Lets just hope the loss of posting due to all this back and forth going of the upgrades is distributed evenly between the OOP Worlds... Håvard |
| #93gazza555Jun 14, 2006 4:00:05 | Ah, thanks! I assumed since the announcement was gone that the update had been made. I would assume that the boards the post more frequently will suffer the most. So Dark Sun will lose the most ;) From what I read on the thread that was linked to in the announcement the old boards will remain up for a month after the new boards come into existance so there will probably be a lot of 'cutting and pasting' going on. ![]() Regards Gary |

| #108HuginOct 02, 2006 16:04:21 | On average we're closing the gap to Greyhawk at about 300 posts a month. Looks a year-long battle ahead of us. ;) |
| #109gawain_viiiOct 02, 2006 17:26:40 | Looks a year-long battle ahead of us. Unless we start posting about any and everything no matter how vaguely or remotely Mystaran, or how many times the topic has been debated to death. Shall I bring up the idea of classic vs. 3e again? Or maybe an essay-long rant about how all other campaign worlds steal their ideas from Mystara only after we've playtested it... (I'm still fuming over those so-called 'hin' on Toril; and the flying ships in the Shining South.) Nah, I don't think that will help... However, there is good news: I should have "Monsters of the Known World" ready by the end of the month, if not before (thanks TDA). Speaking of Monster collections, does anyone know how to get in touch with Tim Beach? I would like to talk to him about doing the preface to the Savage Coast portion of my PDF project. Roger |

| #127culture20Dec 03, 2006 19:46:48 | The columns that are month-named are the post counts relative to ours. The "change" column shows how much relative change there was between our post-count and another forum's. So, Dark Sun seems to be the only group posting more than us. |
| #128gazza555Dec 04, 2006 4:22:18 | The columns that are month-named are the post counts relative to ours. What Culture20 said ;) For example on the 2nd of November we were 3588 posts behind the Greyhawk board, by the 2nd of December we were 'only' 3130 posts behind. Meaning, obviously, that we closed the gap by 458 posts. Negative numbers in the months columns mean that we are actually ahead of that board. They're left in for nostalgia purposes - the first thread of this type asked the question 'Think we'll ever catch up with Ravenloft?' - which we did and are now 6219 posts ahead of. :D Regards Gary |

| #141culture20Jan 23, 2007 19:47:27 | The nightly maintainance is something of a quandry for me; and I'm a sysadmin. Maintainance for production servers is usually set into a specific window once a week minimum, and even then it's not done _every_ window. The only thing I can think of is that they're transferring the data from the boards to a test server as the last stage of an upgrade to a new physical machine. So, it's probably not going to last forever. |

Over the last 6 months the gains on Dragonlance (in reverse order) are 80, 72, 121, 24, 95, and 227. Luckily, Mystara will still be around in 23 years (but will the WotC boards be here?). ![]() --Ray. |
| #183HuginJul 03, 2007 9:00:54 | Wow! a -80 against Dragonlance. We've never been in a position where we were gaining on Dragonlance before. Let's hope the momentum keeps going! I thought we were gaining on everybody except Dark Sun. The OOP boards have had a good month and have closed on us slightly. Hey! Look at the moose over there... |
| #184havardJul 03, 2007 12:35:43 | Good work! I wish I could do more, but I'm out of the country and have somewhat limited computer access and alot of access to the sun which also needs to be taken advantage of. Im glad you guys are holding the fort! ![]() Havard |

Despite the good numbers I suspect it's just an error. I suspect you're right. I noticed that the numbers were just going up and no members seemed to be logging out. It's probably something to do with the migration to the gleemax domain and such. It seems ok now, Shawn, you're not there as logged in at the moment. ;) Regards Gary |
| #190HuginAug 10, 2007 8:44:29 | It seems that we weren't logged out when we left the boards. Yesterday I logged in at work (I get logged in automatically when I visit) to do my daily reading, but when I got home I had to log in manually. Now this was odd because I should have been logged in automatically, yet I wasn't logged in at all. HOWEVER, "hugin" appeared in the "Currently Active Users" box. I tried to log in and it would do it but when it redirected me back to where I was, guess what, I wasn't logged in, even though "hugin" appeared in the Users box. ![]() It was like... the Twilight Zone *queue eerie music* |

Yesterday I logged in at work (I get logged in automatically when I visit) to do my daily reading, but when I got home I had to log in manually. IIRC the was an announcement regarding the caching of cookies during the change to the new domain name, as well as mentioning that the 'remember me' option had been disabled during the change. The forums may be remembering you unless you actively log out rather than just going to another web page as I am liable to do ;) Anyway it's generating some extra posts, so it's not all bad news ![]() Regards Gary |

| #202havardOct 03, 2007 7:18:08 | ya know, I always thought Greyhawk was a stronger setting than Dragonlance although I loved the trilogy when it came out. I think both the Chronicles and Legends trilogies are awesome. The strength of DL is that it has a huge following outside those who actually play in the setting due to the novels. The problem for Greyhawk (and Mystara) as that these settings compete more directly for the same market that the FR does. This is probably also another reason why we are much further down on the list of worlds that are being considered brought over to 4e than DL is. 3E may have been the last moment of Glory for GH, although it doesn't seem like they appreciated it all that much... Havard |
| #203maddogOct 03, 2007 10:19:02 | 3E may have been the last moment of Glory for GH, although it doesn't seem like they appreciated it all that much... WotC, Greyhawkers or do you mean both? Just curious.... I think using GH in 3e/35e was a good idea as it (re)introduced many new and old players to the setting. I have to admit, GH is my #2 setting of choice. ![]() --Ray. |
| #204slashnullOct 07, 2007 11:37:41 | Those Athas guys are amazing. Wonder how they do it! As an athasophile I pop into the Dark Sun boards every so often. I think the reason there is so much discussion is because of the dedicated fans who are putting out new releases! It's a lot of work and effort by the fans, and of course leads to debates about what is canon and what is not. Some peoples feathers get ruffled and everyone ends up having, shall we say, heated debates. It reminds me of the back and forth there was when the Net Almanacs were coming out and everyone got upset when their favourite country got dealt with in a poor way ![]() |

I have to admit, GH is my #2 setting of choice. Oops, forgot to respond to this one. I was refferring to the Greyhawk fans. I got the impression many of them didnt like the way GH was presented in the 3E material, feeling among other things that the setting was becoming more generic/watered out as it appeared under that edition. Having GH as your #2 favorite setting is acceptable Ray, as long as this is your #1 ;) Havard |
| #206havardOct 07, 2007 16:32:36 | It reminds me of the back and forth there was when the Net Almanacs were coming out and everyone got upset when their favourite country got dealt with in a poor way A good reason for us to keep working on projects like the FGazetteers, Almanacs and similar things then. These products dont seem to spark as many debates as they once did, but I still think they are great to have. Maybe we should be making them more controversial, with Dwarven Wizards and stuff? ;) Hmmm, I am reminded that I still have work to do on the systemless Guide... Havard |

| #222agathoklesFeb 14, 2008 16:50:50 | DS seems so darn popular- makes me wonder why WotC never came out with an official version of it. It's not like it would have really competed with their other settings, would it? (Very different niches.) You mean a 3e version? There are actually two -- one published in Dragon Magazine, and one from Athas.org. Both are considered official, IIRC. And yes, it's a very different niche (high psionics, low magic, geared towards medium and high level characters, and with a very unsual ecology). GP |
| #223maddogFeb 14, 2008 18:17:13 | 500 posts really doesnt seem like all that much though.... :D Certainly doesn't. Remember when Ravenloft seemed so far ahead? ![]() |
| #224CthulhudrewFeb 15, 2008 1:14:06 | You mean a 3e version? There are actually two -- one published in Dragon Magazine, and one from Athas.org. Both are considered official, IIRC. I should have clarified. What I meant was, why didn't WotC ever come out with something of their own along the lines of the FRCS or Eberron, as well as supplementary material for 3E. IIRC, the Dragon version was done by the Paizo guys, and the Athas one by the Athas guys (with there being some disagreement amongst the Athas guys about the Paizo presentation). I can't imagine that a hardcover DS book by WotC would have been a poor seller- even if they just ended up repackaging and expanding upon one of the other versions (bringing in the Athas guys as freelancers, or paying the Paizo guys for using/expanding upon the work they'd already done.) |
| #225agathoklesFeb 15, 2008 8:59:36 | I can't imagine that a hardcover DS book by WotC would have been a poor seller- I don't know. DS is very genre-specific, and not an especially popular genre, as far as I can tell. Sure, it's big on the message board, due to a strong and strongly centralized community -- I'm not aware of other large DS forums, while e.g. Ravenloft aways had large messageboards on the fan sites. Also, there are some elements of 3e that are not conductive to a faithful (or useful from a commercial point of view) representation of DS -- e.g., 3e being very dependent on equipment for character balancing, which conflicts with DS assumptions about lack of resources; DS presenting a very different setting than the usual, thus making most splatbooks useless (most Prestige Classes and the like would be useless in a DS campaign), and in general not conforming to the "everything goes" assumption of 3e. All in all, DS was probably less attractive than, e.g., Ravenloft. It might be more attractive for 4e (base premises are similar: PCs start stronger than NPCs, humans are no more common than some other PC races, lots of isolated communities and lots of dangers, limited reliance on equipment, possibility to play without certain classes, etc.), if WotC "no setting" policy became less strict in the future. | #226maddogFeb 15, 2008 13:58:10 | I've always been a bit confounded by DS. Not trolling here. I just don't see what would be "fun" about that setting. It's closer to Dune than DnD but that's just IMO. To each there own I guess. Yet another post toward Greyhawk domination! ![]() --Ray. |
| #227agathoklesFeb 15, 2008 15:50:49 | I've always been a bit confounded by DS. Not trolling here. I just don't see what would be "fun" about that setting. It's closer to Dune than DnD but that's just IMO. To each there own I guess. True, it's closer to Dune than any other D&D setting, both in environment (desert, isolated planet divided into factions-states with ancient and decandent cultures as well as hardy but poor natives) and in theme (ecology). That may make it more or less interesting depending on personal tastes. OTOH, it makes for a setting that is clearly different from the standard ones, thus appealing to a different crowd -- which was Andrew's original consideration. GP |
| #228CthulhudrewFeb 16, 2008 16:09:03 | I've always been a bit confounded by DS. Not trolling here. I just don't see what would be "fun" about that setting. It's closer to Dune than DnD but that's just IMO. To each there own I guess. I thought it sounded great when they originally advertised it back in the day, to the point I bought the first boxed set (and the Dragon-Kings hardcover and the- awful, awful Prism Pentad, which I only finished out of a stubborn sense of wanting the back story to the world; thankfully, that stubbornness I managed to drum out of myself about 7 books into the Wheel of Time. :p) It was and is a pretty cool concept, it just quickly became too much of the same. Virtually an entire desert planet got really boring, really quick. The sorcerer-kings ruling over isolated cities got really boring, really quick. Basically, to me, while it had a lot of interesting concepts, they didn't have much life beyond the shock value. And then they have this series that lays out the back story and during the course of which they end up getting rid of that status quo in a strange way that really screws part of the concept (the sorcerer-king part). I have the same problem with sci-fi books that handwave the nature/populace of worlds by confining them to one single geographic feature (the water world, the forest world, the desert world). It just comes across as lazy and boring to me- but then, one of my favorite things is the interplay and differences between different cultures, so worlds that lack that aspect are obviously going to be of less interest to me. |

Fair question! ![]() It doesn't really have anything to do with Greyhawk. I started the original "Catch up with Ravenloft" thread a few years ago. The main idea then was to stimulate the activity here. It is wonderful what a little competition can do. I also think it helps add to the sense of community on these boards. We have definately come a long way since the Ravenloft thread. Greyhawk seeed like a near impossible benchmark back then... BTW: Many people here are fans of Greyhawk, so IMHO it should in no way be seen as an attack on that setting or its fans. In fact, we should now be focusing on Dragonlance... ![]() Once again..Huzzah! Havard |
