| #2rob_douglasMar 13, 2008 8:34:16 | In a video interview, they noted, that while the "core" gods will be part of this mapless world that they are putting forth for 4E, individual campaigns will have their own gods. Greyhawk gods will not be going anywhere, and people playing in 4E Greyhawk will keep them, but recognizing some of the 4E design issues may be worthwhile. Is there a high priest of the summer wind? Do they need martial clerics? Some Greyhawk deities are making the leap as generic gods as well. I think their generic treatment may inform Greyhawk, but it does not supercede Greyhawk canon. ROB |

| #4pauln6Mar 16, 2008 7:38:12 | I'm hoping that articles in Dragon will address alternative game world pantheons in due course. How significant deity-specific abilities will be remains to be seen. We know that some abilities can be purchased through Feats to broaden a cleric's ability to channel divinity but not much more. I'm looking back to 1e for inspiration on generic clerics with a few deity-specific skills and abilities. |
| #5abanathieMar 22, 2008 0:18:55 | My understanding is that the 4th edition generic gods will include some Greyhawk gods in addition to gods from other campaign settings. From a Greyhawk campaign setting, Greyhawk gods are still Greyhawk gods. The current pantheon will continue to exist in the WoG setting. |
| #6pyre_bornMay 15, 2008 22:31:09 | What I think most people aren't grasping is that the new fluff and ideas are for a points of light campaign, and so far, only Faerun is turning points of light. From what they've said so far, most campaigns will advance in timeline, but past fluff may still be their. So as for the gods, points of light (mish mash pantheon), Greyhawk (Oerth pantheon), Faerun (Forgotten Realms pantheons...minus a few :p ) |
| #7Black_EggMay 16, 2008 15:17:58 | I expect that most of the same principles that informed the changes in the Forgotten Realms pantheon will also occur in Greyhawk. Many of the lesser deities will get demoted. Greyhawk has a LOT of deities that see almost no use at all. This doesn't mean that some of the Helm/Tyr weirdness will necessarily occur. Nor does it mean that a deity as prominent as Mystra will necessarily have to go. A general shakeup should be expected, however. In addition to some cleanup work, we might see some plot-related changes in the pantheon, but that really depends on how far they advance Greyhawk's timeline and what happens in the interim. Greyhawk appears to be less compatible with 4th edition than Eberron but more compatible than the Forgotten Realms, so something in between those two will likely occur. |
| #8Alter_BoyMay 17, 2008 21:42:40 | The god issue is a mess. Core gods who are also Oerth gods who are also Toril gods... Moradin, Garl Glittergold, Correllon Larethian, Lolth, etc, etc, etc. |
| #9pauln6May 19, 2008 9:21:45 | There's a pdf full of greyhawk gods floating around, includes those allowed in LG plus the humanoid gods - it's very long! |
| #10Black_EggMay 19, 2008 11:33:40 | There's a pdf full of greyhawk gods floating around, includes those allowed in LG plus the humanoid gods - it's very long! Yeah you can download it from WotC's Living Greyhawk site. There might be a better source for Greyhawk deities out there, but I'm not aware of one. That document is also a good indication of why a general cleanup of the deities of Oerth might not be such a bad idea. |
| #11AtomicPopeMay 19, 2008 22:50:37 | Since the TSR debacle way back when they switched to Forgotten Realms, for lack of imagination, they also took the demi-human gods from Greyhawk. So Greyhawk gods have always been, and will always be part of the core pantheon. The Greyhawk gods are iconic. They've been around longer than most players. Pelor is a the most resonant image of goodness ever created by any RPG company. At the same time, no story of destruction and recklessness has ever been better told than that of Tharizdun. Greyhawk is teh great. |
| #12AtomicPopeMay 19, 2008 22:54:24 | Greyhawk appears to be less compatible with 4th edition than Eberron but more compatible than the Forgotten Realms, so something in between those two will likely occur. Not at all. Eberron banked all of its fluff on the Vancian Spell System. Now with the advent of At Will and Encounter powers that do not use components, Dragonmarks are lame. They'll need to rethink the way Dragonmarks work, if they work at all. Why go to the house of healing when minor cures are At Will? |
| #13GreenKnightMay 20, 2008 3:23:18 | The god issue is a mess. Core gods who are also Oerth gods who are also Toril gods... And this is something new? As Alter_Boy pointed out, "Moradin, Garl Glittergold, Correllon Larethian, Lolth, etc, etc, etc.". All of them in Greyhawk. And all of them in Forgotten Realms. Is it really so strange to see them in core, too? Nevermind that the Realms is packed full of numerous other gods which aren't unique to it. Like Tyr, Tyche, Oghma, Silvanus, the entire Mulhorandi Pantheon, and so on. It's pretty clear that many gods are worshipped on more then one world, and that's been the case very nearly the entirety of D&D's history. |
| #14akossMay 20, 2008 17:23:28 | I agree a new setting book should just focus on a core group of the most important gods and leave it at that. While maybe not the most ideal situation, I don't mind that much that FR and GH are going to share some demihuman gods. Lolth being the only one that I really lament over... they pimped her so heavily and for so long now in the Realms I find myself feeling she needs to be downplayed now in GH. At any rate, I don't see any need to go the FR route of actively pruning deities in mass deicide, though I can see some shuffling around in the ranks and some new promotions and additions. You could just leave the more fringe gods for Dragon articles to flesh out later (if the interest is there). |
