So, in the spirit of yellowdingo's 1001 Fantasy Plants, Weeds, and Trees thread, I have started this one! Basically, this thread is meant for fantasy animals; not necessarily monsters (though they could still be posted), but, rather, things like the Billy-Bumbler from Stephen King's Dark Tower series; just normal animals from your campaign world. Here we go!

1) Usdinaya: Meaning "Little Rock" in elven, Usdinaya are small arthropods who grow shells that look like tiny pebbles, hence the name. They look very similar to hermit crabs, and the shells are actually about as hard as rock, making them incredibly resilient defensive structures.

A common practice amongst the elves of the rocky regions of their realm is to hollow out the shells of these creatures, and thread them onto necklaces, as a way to gain their protective properties. The insect itself is also very nutritious, though great care must be taken to remove any shards of shell, as they can very easily chip a tooth.

Environment:
Deserts, Mountains, and Riverbeds; essentially, any rocky area.

2) Gramboale: A type of beetle the size of a fist, and a general pests to the dwarves of Gelza Mountain, Gramboale are capable of chewing through most types of stone, and large colonies can severely damage tunnels, endangering the lives of miners and civilians alike.

Environment: Underground, Especially Mountains with large granite, marble, and limestone deposits.

3) Antbirds- These brightly colored, blue-jay sized birds are possessed of a mischievous intelligence. They are the ones that fly overhead and drop a big, runny poop on your saddle while you're in the tavern. They hatch when the mother flies overhead and drops the egg on some unsuspecting soul's head. The newly hatched chick instictively knows how to fly fast! They are not very rugged, however, and when they die they explode in a fireworks display of brightly colored feathers. It's quite spectacular to watch. The feathers, however, have incredibly fine barbules, which cause them to cling to anything they touch, similar to a gecko's feet.

Environment- Usually towns and cities, where they breed quickly and displace the local pigeon population.

(Note: I have used these birds as a running distraction. The name and colorful aspect of the bird comes from the persona of Adam Ant during the early 80's, particularly the album "Kings of the Wild Frontier". The rest is a satire of the seagulls at the Orlando RTC Navy base.

4) Dromaead - A woodland or plain-dwelling sprite, Dromaeads often appear as a three-foot naked fey children. They are mischevious and curious creatures, incapable of natural speech. When they do speak, it comes out as high-pitched babble. Chief among their qualities is the natural speed at which they operate -- to most other creatures, they often seem to be a blur. Dromaeads are some of the fastest creatures in the wild, quicker than quicklings. The rare instance where one glimpses a Dromaead, the creature looks as a flesh-colored blur streaking past.

5) Pavender - A simple saltwater and freshwater fish that resembles a pollock, except for its striped rainbow coloring. Fairly common and widely agreed to be simply delicious.

6) Workin: A common herd-animal of the Kirali plains, Workin are short, stout beasts, with four sets of horns curved like a ram's. Their fur tend to blacks and browns, and hang well over their eyes. They are valued for their milk, which, despite its somewhat bitter flavor, is very nutritious.
