Water park in a city in an ancient empire. In a pool of water 5' (one square) deep are a bunch of stone blocks with flat tops connected to eachother by rope bridges. Each platforms range from 2x2 squares to 10x20 squares and they fill the map area with spaces between 1 and 3 squares between most platforms. The platforms are connected to eachother by rope bridges. The sides of each platform are ridged so that the water running down them makes pleasant splashing noise. The entire park is either magic or faux mechanical and each platform moves up and down randomly each round while devices add or remove slack from the rope bridges to keep them taught and usable. Each platform starts at a DM determined hight between 10' and 60' above the water below. It is easiest to just note the each platforms height with a d6 or in dry erase in a corner. At the end of each round, roll a d6 for each platform. on a 1-2 lower the platform 10', on a 3-4 keep that platform stead, and on a 5-6 raise that platfor 10'. As the combat progresses, different lines of sight and options for jumping both across and down will appear and disappear. I ruled that any falling dealt half damage due to the water below. Climbing checks to scale the sides of the platforms were all easy due to the ridged sides. This venue made for a very memorable battle. |

In the center of the crater is a rock needle with a cave entrance (an old tempel of lolth) From the border of the crater to the rock needle there is a giant network of spider webs. PCs have to walk carefully over these webs. The webs are connected with steep needle platforms reaching up from the bottom of the deep crater. So there is every 10 to 20 meters such a needle (stabile ground) The nebula: over the crater valley there is a dense nebula cloud which limits sight to only 10 squares or so. Monsters: several jumpspiders/other spiders/ettercaps/driders are lurking somewhere in the depths of the giant web and also some hidden dark mantles (clasping at the needle platforms) which provide blackness if PCs walk nearby. (dangerous: The jumpspiders can see in this blackness, most of the PCs not - should make for some interesting combats) Balance rolls or acrobatic rolls should be made from time to time to avoid falling through the strings of the giant web into the misty deep. (also during combat) When the PCs are in the middleway of the giant web, a howling wind (soundtrack of a "howling wind" is nice here) could begin and the web begins to swing erratically (acrobatic roll required) Precautions the characters could meet before they enter the location: characters are connected with ropes, hiring a specialist with climbing/balancing experience I used this location in one of my games and it was a great thrill for the players. |
