I've been going through my DMG recently, and was looking throught the encounter template section when I thought: this would be perfect for a 101 thread so here I go (keep in mind, as the title suggests this thread is just for the Heroic Tier):

1. Hard Encounter: Level 4

Setup: The town has been overun with a cult. Now the followers of the cult are destroying buildings. One such group is these.

             1 Human Berserker

             2 Warforged Soliders

             2 Blazing Skeletons

             1 Mad Wraith

             1 Haifling Prowler

1425 experience points

Tactics: The berserker charges towards any who try to disrupt their attacks, while the soliders move to protect the blazing skeletons, whil giving them a clear line of sight/effect. The wraith and the prowler both sneak on opposite sides of the enemy group. Once they close in on the enemies, the rest of the group moves forward, hoping to push the enemy group into another group of cultists.

You can't just throw monster names like that at us without strategy or anything. Add some life to this thread!

2- Skeleton Builders - Normal Encounter Level 2

Setup: A necromancer has ordered his skeletal troop to build something. A boat, an airship, seige engine, anything worth protecting. In one of the many crates of material on the site a swarm of rat is hiding.

Monsters:

8 Decrepit Skeleton

2 Skeleton (including one equipped with a crossbow)

1 Rat Swarm

625 EXP

Tactics: When disturbed the skeletons will first use any tools they were using as improvised thrown weapon before drawing their real weaponry, targetting the nearest intruders as one for a devastating first wave. Any creature on a higher ground can pick up crates and material to also make improvised heavy thrown weapon attack. the pieces of debris can also create hindering terrain. One of those crate contains the Rat Swarm that will spill out and pool on the square of the target it hits. The rats are not interested in the boney skeletons, only the fleshier PCs.

3. Easy Encounter - Level 8

Setup: Recently members of a local village have been disappearing on their delivery routes, sending their goods to nearby cities. This has lead to an uproar among the villagers, what they don't know: a pwerful necromancer is the one doing it. Now, he is prepared to mount an assault on the village with his groups of undead. This is one such group.

            Mad Wraith (MM 266)

            6 Rotwing Zombies (MM 274)

1300 Experience Points

Tactics: The wraith moves towards the enemies with two zombies acting as guards, striking at enemy spellcasters first. Meanwhile the other zombies attack any other enemies, if too many enemies exist, then these zombies focus their attacks on enemy melee combatants.

4.) Hive Surprise

Setup: As the PCs travel on the plains (for their own reasons), one of them drops out of sight! This is because the ground was a False-floor Pit trap (level 1 Warder.) At the bottom, the PC finds himself in a dark tunnel. Should he turn on the light, he finds himself in the middle of a hoard of giant ants! Yikes!

Level 3 encounter (750 XP)

- 1 False-floor Pit trap (level 1 Warder), 100 XP

- 6 Hive Workers (Level 1 Minion Skirmisher), 25 XP each (for a total of 150 XP)

- 2 Winged Drones (Level 4 Skirmisher), 175 XP each (for a total of 350 XP)

- 1 Hive Soldier (Level 3 Soldier), 150 XP

- Collapsing Ground: The terrain around the False-floor Pit begins to crumble away. Each round on initiative count 0, roll a d4, and add the number of rounds since you last rolled a 5 or higher (on the first round, treat this number as 1.) On a roll of 5 or higher, the area in a burst 1 around the hole (created by the False-floor Pit and this effect) collapses into the tunnel below. The terrain is removed, the area underneath the burst becomes difficult terrain, and any creature underneath the burst takes 1d6 damage that does not affect minions.

In addition, the area beneath the False-floor Pit is difficult terrain after the trap is triggered.

- Other terrain: If you so choose, add other terrain above or within the tunnel, such as rocks, thorny plants, and stalagmites.

Tactics: When the trap is triggered, there are four Hive Workers adjacent to or within the area beneath the False-floor Pit. Two more are within the vicinity with the Hive Soldier. These attack any creatures within the tunnel instantly. On the second round, the Winged Drones enter, one from each direction of the tunnel. These fly up to meet any party members who remain on the surface.
