In the campaign I am working on I plan to have a high level NPC as a guide to this new world (the world is also of my own design more on that later) . The problem is that the players have been suspended up untill now and the NPC has to have survived for atleast 200 years to watch them.

I am looking for a person basicly would by nature know the world know alot of obscure facts but can still fight and defend himself if need be (because he will **** the characters off at one point or another because of his arrogent aditude Think House in DnD )

The Ideas I had was
Races
Elf
Dwarf
Illumian(races of destiny)

Classes(I plan on making him gistalt because he will not be fighting at all really just a story element but I want to fully stat him out because well you can plan for your players)
Bard/ex-monk (this would be multiclass because of the lawfull problem.)
Fighter/Bard(gistalt)
Adept/Wizard
Cleric(just a cleric)

that is just off the top of my head. Ill be happy to answer any questions. I was thinking of having him go into epic levels actually.

Also how would a character in DnD attain Imortality? Or gain extra years onto his/her life?

Well, if you're going gestalt, and want to make him capable of preventing Death via PCs...

Barbarian/Cleric (w/ Strength Domain).

*shudders visibly*

I'll spare you the list of reasons why...

Anyways, as to the class... a caster of some sort is almost a prerequisite. Bard, Wizard, & Cleric (w/ Knowledge Domain) are natural choices, and a gestalt build with anything that has a lot of skill points is probably a good choice.

Example #1: Bard/Ranger (gestalt)

d8 HD
BAB/HD progression
All Good Saves
6+Int. Mod. Skill Points (x4 @ 1st level)
Both Rely on Light Armor
Arcane & Divine Spells

-Needless to say, this combo is almost pure win (from a "I'm not going to die that easily perspective.")

If you're using Complete Warrior, replace Ranger w/ Swashbuckler... and watch a PC who tries curl up in a ball and cry. No, really...

As for immortality?

First off, if it doesn't give stat bumps... it can just be a story element. *Insert vague magical mumbo-jumbo here.*

However, if it can (potentially) affect his/her stats... then you need to stat it out (so you can account for CRs).

You could also create an infinite loop spell chain that triggers under the right conditions, allowing the character to achieve "near-infinite" immortality.

For example: Create a Device that triggers a Flesh to Stone spell on command, and triggers a Stone to Flesh spell under certain conditions (certain times of the year, the PC's waking up, someone breaking into the chamber, etc...).

Another concept you might play with...

Dragons live a really long time, and Gold Dragons are noted sages...
