I would love to hear feedback on this.  If there is already a mechanic to pick up a second diety or if anyone has ideas on balance all criticisms are welcome.

Polytheistic

You grew up in a city that paid homage and respect, and was subject to the influence and wrath, of two dieties.

Benefit: You may worship a second diety and may qualify for feats, powers, paragon paths etc. based on the details of either of your patron dieties.  This does not afford you the ability to use Channel Divinity Powers more often in a given encounter but may, of course, allow you access to a wider variety of such powers.

Neat concept. I almost wonder if it wouldn't be better as a Feat, though. But since backgrounds are primarily house rules anyway, go for it.

I wasn't actually aware that there was a limit on patron dieties. As far as I know, you can have as many as you like. I could be wrong though...

That being said, even if you are right, I don't think that this sort of feature belongs on a background. Usually backgrounds only deal in skills and languages. It seems to me like something that could be part of a feat though...

I was debating between a feat and a background.  The flavor of it definitely leans towards background but I suppose that could be rewritten to suit a feat somehow.

I was definitely liking it as a solid option for divine characters to compete with Born Under a Bad Sign - as that seems to be the most popular choice for backgrounds in my campaign at the moment.

I'm interested to know what it is about the background that makes you think it would be better served as a feat?

Thanks for the quick reply btw

Hm. There are feats that require you worship a specific diety. I assumed an implied limitation. But again, I could be wrong on that.

Hmm... I just checked out the general rules for Divinity Feats and found nothing suggesting that you couldn't obtain more than one for worshipping more than one deity... Now I'm honestly curious, where is there any text saying that you normally can't worship more than one deity?

I was thinking along the same lines, otherwise those all seem like somewhat ridiculous pre-requisites.  All you'd have to do is say "I worship everyone!" and you qualify for all of those feats - in addition, the character builder seems to only allow you to choose one diety.

Thanks for all the replies - didn't realize how active this forum would be in the middle of the afternoon.  I guess everyone else is thinking about D&D instead of working on friday afternoons too heh.

Well...
(A) It's not actually possible to worship everybody because there are alignment restrictions to that sort of thing.
(B) Even if you could, I'm not really seeing the mechanical problem with that. You can still only use your Channel Divinity power once per encounter, maybe more under certain circumstances, so none of the feats actually grant you any more power, only a bit more versatility.

in addition, the character builder seems to only allow you to choose one diety.

The character builder is wrong about a lot of stuff. It's not a legitimate source of rule information.

I was going to argue that the spirit of the rules seems to imply only 1 diety but..

As a cleric, the deity (or deities) you choose to revere...

CLERICS AND DEITIES
All clerics choose a specific faith to which they devote themselves. Usually this faith is the worship of a specific patron deity—for example, Moradin, Pelor, or Erathis. Sometimes clerics are devoted to churches that venerate groups of deities or even philosophies.

PALADINS AND DEITIES
As fervent crusaders in their chosen cause, paladins must choose a deity. Paladins choose a specific faith to serve...

Obviously some differences between the Cleric and Paladin descriptions.  For the purposes of my original post, lets assume you normally can't have more than one specific diety and I want a mechanic to allow my players to do so.

Well, if you're willing to house rule to begin with, why not just house rule away any perceived limitation on how many dieties you can worship to begin with? Honestly, I don't think it's a big enough deal to make players pay for it anyways.

EDIT: But now that I'm looking at the classes more directly, it does look like you were right to begin with, at least in the case of the Avenger and Paladin. They do seem restricted to a singular deity. Cleric and Invoker, on the other hand, don't seem to have that restriction.
