Okay, so I saw a post about playing 4th edition without a battlemat and realized that it's not as friendly to non-miniatures play as 3.x was. At least as a starting point I whipped together a system to resolve ranges without using squares or a mat.

For ease of play I'm going to side with James Wyatt and suggest using either a yard or meter as the conversion for a square rather than 5'. Both sets of numbers are provided, however.

Range Roll

You determine roughly how far away the target is then roll a d20 and add the range of the weapon or attack. If the result of the roll is equal to or greater than the distance DC you are close enough to use the ability.

Range
Category (Range DC)
Melee (0)
Close (5)
Medium (10)
Far (20)
Very Far (40)
