The idea of having multiple spacefaring races and different nations fighting over planets and having my group being a party of mercs is just too good to pass up. I was going to use a combat concept I've been working on to simplify air/space combat by increasing the square "size" to better reflect the freedom of movement and dogfighting in close quarters. Each square is the equivalent of 5 miles in the air and 5,000 miles in space. This will allow the players in ships to preform maneuvers and such and not complicate everything by having to add the third dimension to the playmat. The weapons on ships will also reflect the on ground counterparts, I was going to imply that guns (lasers, plasma, and mass drivers, etc.) were the equivalent of melee weapons that had a reach of 1 square or reach of 2 depending on the weapon. Missles and torpedoes would have range similar to that of arrows and crossbow bolts. Also I had an idea of using the ships more as mounts in tactical combat to better reflect your fighting the pilot not the machine. (Even the best ship in the hands of a child is no match for a ace fighter pilot in a prop plane.) Does anybody have any ideas that they would like to contribute to these lines of thoughts. The ship has its own stats like a horse or a griffon and such plus give the pilot a bonus to its combat abilities. Also ships could recieve healing surges to reflect the ships damage control systems. (Of course they would have their own pool.) As for piloting, I was going to make it a feat that would allow martial empowered classes to use their exploits in the combat. Although it feels like I'm leaving out the Divine and Arcane powered classes out of the combat. I don't want the wizards and clerics to feel left out of combat should it happen in the air/space. Any help here? |
