I have been attempting to design a system in which the players get given magical energy to distribute as they like in lieu of most magic items, except wondrous items and consumable items. Each character has a residuum pool. Your basic residuum pool maximum will be equivalent to the gp value of 3 magic items the same as your current level. (eg at 1st level your total residuum pool maximum will have a value of 1020) At 1st level you do not start the game with any Residuum points in your pool. You may use stored residuum to emulate any basic magic enhancement of your level or less. It is entirely up to you how you choose to distribute your residuum points, and you may choose to redistribute your energy every time you take an extended rest. In addition, all characters qualify to take the following feat: Maleable Residuum Benefit: You can redirect your inner Residuum reserves in a time of need. Feat Power Daily Standard Action Personal Effect: By sheer force of will you are able to make a rapid shift of your Residuum. You may change up to two properties, powers or enhancements you currently have, for any others you know. They do not have to be of equal value. Using this ability is also equivalent to having reached a milestone in regards to the number of magic item abilities you may use in a day, ie it grants you another use of a magic item daily power. In order to emulate item properties you will have to learn the ability first (you only start off with basic knowledge of enhancements). Multiple enhancement bonuses of the same type do not stack in the same way that carrying multiple magic items of the same type do not stack. |

On a last note, given that you say in the feats that you can change out feats, powers, or enchantments, the ability to mix and max properties and powers from different enchantments is a little too much if you ask me, just switching enhancements ought to do |

They will be handed out as an alternative to magic items in treasure, though I intend to give more out at a time, far less frequently than the treasure tables would indicate. Same goes for powers/properties, though they would tend to be given out as adventure rewards, as for the most part they will have to be taught. For example in return for helping him out with a bit of goblin trouble, the Dwarven smith teaches one of the characters the ability to heal himself 1/day, mirroring the Dwarven Armour ability For your second point, perhaps I should have said Property/Power instead of properties and powers, those two things are intertwined. I don't intend on those two separating from each other. |
