And one I do not recommend for a constant game though it could be a successful one, two or three campaign, game would be to take Fourth Edition.

Convert it over to a Modern Fantasy Setting. (It's another crazy Micha project... I told you I can't stop... do you believe me now? ;) )

Take the point buy raise it to twenty four- twenty eight points. (depending on how stupid awesome you are shooting for here)

And create a Super Hero campaign with it.

Think about it, we already have a -ton- of staple monsters that you can easily say push beyond what "mere mortals" are capable of handling, or even what heroes are capable of handling (start adding templates to monsters... yes.... all monsters except minions)

Create new powers to fit some of our most iconic (or even some obscure like Blue Beetle, Witchblade etc) heroes and let the pcs go to town.

Just think about the possibilities here. Make the gear bonuses and powers simply be level bonuses and new "powers" characters unlock (be it Batgod gadetry of Superman learning a new level of "Pwn your face" etc.)

I think you could make for an extremely interesting game....

Discuss.

I actually started work on this, kinda. It was set in a stylized Victorian England, but I was statting out Marvel and DC characters with the intention of the PCs starting out as a superhero team trying to make a name for themselves. Marvel 1602 was a big influence. Another project that life got in the way of, I'm afraid.

We can blame my discussion on comics earlier this morning for this hairbrained scheme.

Unfortunately for all of you people on the internet I already have a basic setting to unleash this horror upon that's semi posted already.

I want to see everyone's ideas on this. What kind of heroes would you create for yourself? etc?

I [heart] 1602 (the original work anyway - its later, non-Gaiman, works I'm not that into).

That said, I was working on something similar in 3.5, but more of a "reimagining the characters in a different world" in Eberron. The characters with realistic (as in, easily represented by game mechanics: ie, Batman) analogs were fun, but the really interesting ones, I found, were those that were changed significantly to work within the confines of the mechanics (our "Spiderman" was a druid, and was almost unrecognizable beyond an arachnid-theme; "Venom" a possessing Quori spirit "trapped" in the material world).

I did a Medieval Superheroes one shot once in 3e. 10th level characters with double item money for items.

My DMPC: Golden Age Archer complete with the Bow of Justice which was a merciful longbow, which fired magical boxing glove arrows.

Also the game where I created minions before minions existed; 8th level mooks with 5 hp each.

Being a big fan of the Mutants & Masterminds system as well I've been thinking about this for a while. Your powers could come from your "race" which would be more generic so it could be any thing from race to mutations to radioactive spider bites. Of course feats could be used to style and then your class determines how you use said powers. So you could have Earth Controller as your "race" and then if you take "Brick" (Fighter or Paladin) as your class you'll be more like Thing (Fantastic Four) or you could take Blaster (Warlock or Wizard) to be more like Terra (Teen Titans). It would be best to also include a drawback system where you can take flaws with your character to get a bonus some where else (Something I'd like to see in D&D RAW actually. Cuz one armed blind sword masters are awesome?).

As I said races would have to be more generic and have more racial powers. The same would have to happen with classes though probably don't need extra powers beyond what we'll get with the various "powers" books.

Sorry for the double post. Was just thinking of what the various classes could be.

Cleric - Energy Defender. Some blasting and healing and forcefields like Guardian of Faith.

Paladin - A combo of Energy Defender and Brick.

Fighter - Brick. Tough and a good fighter. Protective.

Rogue - Martial Artists. Skill based.

Ranger - Gadgeteers. Weapon focus.

Warlock - Blasters.

Warlord - Commanders. Those who inspire others with their powers or lead while fighting ala Cyclops.

Wizard - Energy Controller. Full control of their energy type.

Swordmage - Speedster. A focus on mobility (Feylocks do this a bit too, of course) and stopping enemies from being of full use in a fight and can hit several enemies either by flying through at super-sonic speeds, running by and punching every one, or by teleporting around and hitting people.

Barbarian - Hulking Brutes. Big, tough, and strong. Easy to hit but hard to hurt and they hit hard. Example: Incredible Hulk.

Was thinking more about the idea of more racial powers and maybe each "race" comes with a set of powers (Attack, defense, mobility, etc.) and the class powers let you activate those. There'll probably be some "racial" powers that can be used by any character of that "race" like it is now.

This is brilliant. I might do in in a one shot adventure.

New development!

More Special Features of the system.

Classes themselves are stripped away out of the game, replaced by ability sets you purchase with points. (Read Defender Hp costs X, marking like a fighter, or paladin costs X , X amoung of surges cost a given amount of points and so forth.

Abilities are purchased with points and have stat requirements.

You may only spend up to twenty six points on stats.

Incorporate a new Talents system in Heroic Tier which gives you abilities that ramp up your character. For example the Super Human Strength Talent gives you a +5 on Str checks. Every character gets a certain amount of Talents. (Somewhere around five I think total).
